Welcome to Stephen Perse Cambridge Co-curricular

At Stephen Perse Cambridge, our mission is to educate and inspire the leaders, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow; young people who achieve academic excellence and make a positive impact on society, guided by creativity, confidence, compassion, and conviction. Our co-curricular programme plays a vital role in this mission by enriching learning beyond the classroom and supporting students’ personal growth.

We offer a wide range of opportunities that go beyond the traditional syllabus, encouraging students to follow their passions and develop a lifelong love of learning. Through clubs, sports, creative arts, and community projects, students broaden their horizons, develop character, and find unique pathways to success.

Social and environmental responsibility is central to our approach, inspiring students to lead initiatives that promote a sustainable and socially conscious future. Our programme is inclusive and accessible, ensuring every student can contribute to and benefit from a supportive and collaborative community.

This booklet provides an overview of the co-curricular life at Stephen Perse Cambridge, including the activities on offer and how the programme is organised. We hope it inspires you to explore the many ways your child can grow, learn, and thrive beyond the classroom.

As Deputy Head, I am proud of the enriching co-curricular opportunities we offer. We believe learning extends far beyond academics, and we look forward to supporting your child as they discover their passions and grow as valued members of our school community.

SOCS

Our School Online Communication System (SOCS) is the online system we use to organise our co-curricular clubs, music lessons and sporting fixtures.

Pupils

Pupils in the Senior School and Sixth Form will use SOCS to view and sign up to co-curricular clubs and activities at the start of each term. Sports fixtures and music lessons will also appear on their SOCS calendar when they are selected for a sports fixture or have a music lesson scheduled. Form tutors will guide them through the club sign up process at the start of the year and SOCS instructions for pupils are also available on the student blog. We highly recommend that pupils sync their SOCS calendar to their Google Calendar to enable them to easily access their academic, clubs and activities timetable in one place, as well as being able to view any changes to normal schedules.

Parents

Parents will be able to log into SOCS using their Parent Portal credentials and view their child’s co-curricular activities. As parents you will have the ability to add clubs for them, however, we ask that you refrain from adding clubs for your child as we expect students to take responsibility for selecting their activities, encouraging ownership and independence. Some brief instructions for parental use of SOCS are linked below for your reference.

Trips

At Stephen Perse Cambridge, we take pride in offering a wide variety of trips that enrich student learning. From everyday local visits around Cambridge to exciting overseas residential trips, our extensive trips programme gives students the chance to explore new cultures and enjoy unique experiences. These journeys create lasting memories which stay with our students long after they have left us.

Our House System: Community, Competition and Growth

When students join our school, they become part of one of seven Houses, each one named after a respected former Headmistress or Governor, and each with its own colour.

The House Experience

Being part of a House helps every student feel a sense of belonging right from the start. Houses meet regularly, creating a strong community where friendships grow and students support one another. Throughout the year, students take part in a wide variety of friendly inter-House competitions across all subjects, as well as three major events that bring the whole school together. House Talent, House Quiz, and Sports Day.

Students can earn House Points by living out the values we hold dear: kindness, teamwork, determination, leadership, and a commitment to doing their best. Whether that’s in lessons, clubs, sports, or simply helping others.

In Year 12, there’s an exciting opportunity for students to take on a leadership role as Head of House. This is a chance to help shape House life, organising events, leading meetings, and working closely with staff to bring new ideas to life. It’s a role that celebrates responsibility, creativity and teamwork. Our House system is at the heart of school life. It brings students together, builds confidence, and helps every child feel valued and included.

Recreational Time

At Stephen Perse Cambridge, we recognise that education extends beyond academic achievement to the development of confident, compassionate leaders and innovators. Our break and lunchtime activities provide students with valuable opportunities to engage in physical recreation, fostering resilience, collaboration, and a strong sense of community in a supportive environment.

Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA)

Our well-utilised rooftop MUGA facility operates on a rotational basis for different year groups during break and lunch. It offers students a dynamic space to participate in a range of sports, promoting teamwork, physical fitness, and leadership skills. Students should wear appropriate footwear and bring their own ball to ensure active and safe participation.

Cricket Nets

Available throughout the year, the cricket nets enable students to develop their skills through practice and selfdirected learning. Bats may be borrowed from reception, while students should bring their own soft or tennis balls.

Sports Hall

Our modern sports hall is accessible during lunchtimes for supervised informal recreation sessions featuring activities such as badminton, volleyball, and basketball. These sessions encourage inclusivity and promote physical wellbeing, adaptability, and resilience. The selection of sports varies according to the term and other scheduled clubs and lessons, ensuring a diverse experience.

Table Tennis

Table tennis tables located outdoors are available yearround, offering students an engaging and sociable way to develop coordination and concentration. Equipment may be borrowed from reception, though students are welcome to bring their own.

Clubs and Activities

Clubs Fair

Each September, the Senior School Hall comes alive with the energy and enthusiasm of our annual Clubs Fair, a vibrant event designed to showcase the wide range of co-curricular and enrichment opportunities available to Senior School and Sixth Form students.

From subject-led clubs to creative, cultural, and competitive activities, every department is represented, offering students the chance to discover new interests, explore passions, and engage in life beyond the classroom. The fair gives students the opportunity to speak directly with staff, ask questions, and experience hands-on tasters, whether it’s challenging a teacher to a game of chess, experimenting with science demos, or stepping into the past with historical artefacts.

The Clubs Fair is a highlight of the school year, encouraging students to try something new, pursue their interests, and make the most of everything on offer beyond the curriculum.

Clubs & Enrichment Activities

We offer a wide variety of clubs and activities beyond the classroom. The following pages give more detail on:

• Senior School & Sixth Form Clubs & Activities

• Sixth Form Extension and University Preparation

• Timetabled Sixth Form Enrichment

Adventure Learning Programme (ALPS): ALPS

The primary aim of the ALPS programme is to enhance our approach to learning and to give our students the opportunity to develop their personal life skills, build confidence and resilience. This is achieved through participation in a range of outdoor adventure activities.

Often, the toughest part of any journey is having the confidence to take the first step!

Paddle Sports

We are very fortunate to have the River Cam right on our doorstep at our Latham Road site, with easy access via a purpose-built jetty and a boat shed adjacent to the river. Students get to experience both stand-up paddling and kayaking, with the aim of working towards Paddle UK awards. Sessions are ‘full on’, and getting wet is to be expected! Therefore, bringing suitable spare clothing and a towel is essential.

Climbing Club

Utilising the fantastic bouldering wall at Kelsey Kerridge, students quickly learn the skills required to operate safely in an indoor climbing environment. Once mastered, coaching is provided to develop and improve individual skills. There may be opportunities for students to further develop their experience through climbing trips to other indoor walls.

Bushcraft & Archery Club

Working in small groups, students develop bushcraft skills in our woodland area at Latham Road. Focusing on the basic ‘rule of threes’ in the chain of survival (three minutes without air, three hours without shelter, three days without water, three weeks without food), students learn to make simple fires, build shelters, trap water and consider food options when in remote locations. In the summer term, this club is linked with archery as an additional skill.

Archery Club

With modern equipment and qualified archery instructors, students have the opportunity to develop their techniques and skills in a safe and controlled environment. Archery builds participants’ confidence and patience and is a great way to relax after a busy day at school. Club sessions are offered in all three terms.

Orienteering Club

Orienteering is a combination of cross-country running and navigation, all rolled into one event. The activity usually starts in the school grounds; however, as students develop their skills and confidence, we use local parks including Coe Fen.

DofE Drop-in Support

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is an integral part of our ALPS programme, and students have the opportunity to start their Bronze award in Year 9. This lays the foundation for continuation through Silver (Years 10 and 11) and Gold (usually Years 12 and 13, although some begin Gold when they turn 16 in Year 11). The aim of the drop-in support sessions is to provide students with direct help and guidance on setting up eDofE, answering questions and supporting their programme.

MUN

Model United Nations is one of our flagship Co-Curricular activities offering students a dynamic platform to develop skills in diplomacy, debate, and international collaboration. From Year 9 through to Sixth Form, participants engage in realistic UN-style simulations, learning how global challenges are negotiated and resolved.

A standout feature is our annual CamMUN conference, the only school-hosted MUN event in Cambridge, welcoming 300 students worldwide. Led entirely by a student committee, this event provides invaluable experience in leadership, event management, and teamwork. Roles such as Secretary-General, Head of Academics, and Delegate Services challenge students to develop practical skills beyond the classroom.

MUN is not only a catalyst for deeper global understanding but also enhances students’ university applications and can contribute to Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Debating & Geopolitics

Model United Nations Debating

Do you follow global news and developments, and have you ever wondered how international solutions are debated and agreed upon in the United Nations? Here is your chance to learn how this is done! We operate in the same way as the real UN but provide plenty of explanations and practice to help students achieve successful resolutions and build international consensus on constructive solutions. The Year 9 club is largely student-led, as are most club debates, allowing students to shine as chairs or delegates. Whether you are new to MUN in Year 9, building expertise for conference chairing in Years 10 to 13, or a seasoned member moving up a year, you can look forward to stimulating debates and a variety of local and in-school conferences. You may also apply to join the student body organising our own CamMUN conference. All these activities contribute to Duke of Edinburgh Awards (skills section) and are invaluable for university applications and CVs. All students are welcome.

MUN Conference

In addition to our thriving Model United Nations (MUN) clubs, we are the only school in Cambridge to host an annual weekend MUN conference for students from around the world. Year 12 students apply, interview and six are selected to plan, coordinate and host the conference for 300 students who debate issues while modelling United Nations protocols. It is a significant undertaking; however, our elected students are passionate about debating, MUN and inspiring young people to engage with global issues. Roles include SecretaryGeneral, Head of Academics, Marketing and Finance. Logistics and Delegate Services are also challenging roles that enable our students to develop new skills, manage large budgets, collaborate with a diverse range of students and adults, and create an event of which we are immensely proud.

Philosophy and Ethics Debating Club

This club aims to prepare students for two main debating competitions. In the autumn term, we enter a team of ten students from Years 10 to 13 into the Ethics Cup, a national debating tournament where teams are judged on their ability to thoughtfully advance debates on ethical issues of public concern. Topics have included, ‘When, if ever, is it morally permissible to ban a book from a school or public library?’ and ‘If it were cheaper to do so, should schools replace human teachers with AI bots?’ This club is ideal for students studying or considering Politics, Philosophy, Law or Religious Studies, but is open to anyone interested in debating ethical and political issues. In the spring term, we enter a team of ten students from Years 9 to 13 into a competition called the ‘Philosothon’ held at Cambridge University. The competition uses a ‘community of inquiry’ model, where the aim is not to ‘attack’ or ‘defeat’ another person’s position but to enable the group to develop an awareness of underlying concepts within a philosophical stimulus and a critical understanding of different positions and arguments. In the summer term, the club meets without the pressure of competition preparation to debate issues

of philosophical and ethical interest.

Design Engineering

First LEGO League Competition

Teams from Design Engineering take part in the global First LEGO League robotics competition. Each year, a new theme challenges students to design and build LEGO robots that complete tasks on a themed map within a time limit. In addition to the robotics challenge, students work on an innovation project, identifying a global issue and developing a creative solution to present to judges on competition day. This after-school club is open to all Year 9 students interested in participating. Places are limited, so signing up is essential. The team is selected closer to the regional competition, usually held in spring at Cambridge University’s Faculty of Engineering.

Design Engineering Workshop Time

After-school workshops are available for KS3, KS4, and KS5 students, providing valuable time to work on design and make projects, coursework, or catch up on practical lessons. Students have full access to workshop tools, machinery, and CAD/CAM software, supported by specialist staff offering one-to-one guidance. These sessions are ideal for developing skills and accessing equipment not typically available during regular lessons. Numbers are limited; advance sign-up is encouraged, though drop-in participation is welcome.

• KS3 Workshop: Focus on individual projects and practical work with specialist support.

• KS4 Workshop: Dedicated time for GCSE coursework and project work, with assistance in mastering content.

• KS5 Workshop: Time for A Level coursework, individual projects, or Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), with targeted support.

Drama & Theatre

At Stephen Perse Cambridge, we believe every student should have the opportunity to engage in co-curricular Drama, regardless of prior experience. Our inclusive programme of clubs welcomes performers, theatre makers and technicians alike, fostering creativity, collaboration and confidence. Each year, many students from all year groups participate in our theatre productions, either on stage or behind the scenes. Being part of a creative community, working together towards a shared goal and performing before a live audience is an immensely rewarding experience.

Year 7 and 8 Backstage Clubs

Actors may be the stars of the show, but costumes, props and sets are equally vital. This club offers students interested in theatre design and production a chance to explore the behind-thescenes world of West End productions. Members will also have the opportunity to design and create items for either the Year 7 or Year 8 production.

Year 7, 8 and 9 Drama Clubs

For those who enjoy performing or collaborating to create theatre, these after-school clubs provide a varied programme including improvisation, theatre games and script work. Activities adapt to the interests of each group. All members are automatically invited to audition for their year group’s production; please see the separate entry on Drama and Theatre Productions for details.

Year 9-11 Backstage Club

This practical club involves designing and creating elements for school productions throughout the year. Activities range from sewing costumes and making props to painting sets and designing stage makeup, depending on the show and members’ skills. Backstage club members are invited to join the backstage crew during performances.

Year 8 Theatre Tech Club

This hands-on introduction to theatre technology explores lighting, sound and other technical elements. Students learn about lighting consoles, microphones and more, discovering how performances are seen and heard by audiences.

Year 9 Theatre Tech Club

Students delve deeper into technical theatre, exploring lighting types, sound design and show production. Members gain practical experience controlling lighting and sound equipment and may join the technical team for school productions.

Year 10-11 Theatre Tech Club

Focusing on lighting and sound design, this club offers practical experience in operating equipment and preparing events. Members support the technical team for various productions, gaining valuable insight into theatre production.

Year 12-13 Theatre Tech Club

Sixth Form students advance their technical skills, learning to design and control lighting and sound for productions. Members play a key role in major events such as Cabaret and the Upper School play, ensuring smooth and professional performances.

Drama and Theatre Productions

Every student in Years 7–13 has the opportunity to perform in a full-scale drama production each year. Our varied programme is carefully curated to match each year group’s interests and skills. Every auditioning student is guaranteed a part; in return, cast members must commit fully to the rehearsal schedule, including after-school rehearsals, compulsory Sunday rehearsals, evening dress rehearsals and final performances. We pride ourselves on originality and creativity. Students interested in behind-the-scenes roles are encouraged to join our backstage or theatre tech clubs. We also welcome contributions from assistant directors, choreographers, dancers, musicians and composers—please contact a Drama teacher for more information.

Year 10-13 Drama and Theatre Production

Auditions take place at the start of the academic year, with rehearsals on Mondays and Thursdays after school throughout the autumn term. Performances are held at the end of November. Productions alternate between plays and musicals, often featuring live music and dance. Recent productions include Fame: The Musical, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, The Addams Family: The Musical and Metamorphoses

Sixth Form Cabaret

Our annual Sixth Form-led cabaret takes place in early November. The Senior School Hall is transformed into a themed cabaret bar with audience seating at small tables. Performers from Years 11–13 present a diverse range of music, comedy and dance acts, including live bands, soloists, K-Pop, ballet and commercial dance troupes. Proceeds support a charity chosen by the cabaret committee. There are no auditions or formal rehearsals; performers sign up in late September and prepare independently.

The club inspires a genuine love of reading, encouraging curiosity, critical thinking, and thoughtful engagement with a diverse range of contemporary literature.

Humanities

KS3 Classics Club

We are a big, happy, welcoming club that has lots of fun exploring all things ancient Greece and Rome! This year we have entered competitions, performed mini plays, learned about Greek drama, acted out ancient sacrifices, and had treasure hunts with Greek clues. We’ve watched Hercules, researched classical monsters and played charades, discovered the Roman obsession with curses (and made edible versions!), devised classics-themed board games, and explored the similarities between Roman festivals like Saturnalia & Parentalia (think Christmas & Halloween). Plus, we hold a termly, jaw-droppingly creative Classics Bake-Off to showcase and enjoy classically-themed baking. Join us – everyone is welcome and no Latin is needed!

The Ancient Academy

Year 9s take a deep dive into the Classical world through the lens of ancient literature (in English). From everyday life and politics to the natural world and the Underworld, explore both the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of the civilizations that shaped the Western world. If you enjoy reading, thinking, and exchanging ideas, this is the club for you!

Year 10 Compressed Latin

Students studying Classical Greek in Year 10 can choose to continue Latin as an extra GCSE through a compressed course, meeting twice weekly at lunchtime and after school. This fast-paced course prepares students for the OCR GCSE Latin exam in Year 11 by leveraging overlaps between Greek and Latin. This option is suitable for those confident in managing an increased workload and who have demonstrated strong Latin skills in Year 9.

Year 11 Compressed Latin

Building on Year 10, students continue to refine their Latin skills while tackling two set texts—a verse text (usually from the Aeneid) and a prose text. This is the first chance to read and analyse ‘real’ Latin, decode poetry, and translate extended prose, putting language skills to the test.

KS4 and 5 Classics Society

A student-run club offering a unique way to explore the ancient world beyond the classroom. Each week, members present on topics researched independently—whether it’s ancient philosophy, classical biology, or scandalous Roman noblewomen. Music

There is an extensive range of musical activities on offer, covering a wide range of musical styles from classical to contemporary. Our concerts and ensembles offer opportunities for students who are beginning their musical journeys to take part in suitable groups, challenge the most able performers to develop their skills to the highest level, and cater for everyone in between. We perform around 25 concerts or events in a typical year; alongside concerts in school, we perform regularly at West Road Concert Hall, the Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs, the Portland Arms, and a series of lunchtime concerts at Great St Mary’s and St Paul’s Church on Hills Road. Annual year group soloists’ concerts provide a supportive environment for performing in front of an audience, and student-run open mic sessions are a popular event for our pop and rock singers.

Big Band

Players of instruments such as saxophone, clarinet, flute, trumpet and trombone in Years 10–13 are invited to join the Big Band to rehearse and perform music in a variety of jazz styles. The band plays at Jazz on a Summer’s Evening, and also in concerts throughout the year, sometimes joining forces with the Symphony Orchestra to play film music.

Brass Ensemble

This is for all brass players in Years 7–13; it caters for beginners as well as the most advanced players through careful choice of repertoire and individual parts.

Chamber Music

An extensive programme of chamber music is provided primarily for our music scholars, allowing them to extend their skills by rehearsing in small groups with just one person playing each part. Over the course of a year, a chamber music group will perform a large amount of repertoire; in addition to a dedicated chamber music concert in school, the chamber music groups form a central part of our lunchtime concert series.

Chamber Orchestra

The Chamber Orchestra is for invited advanced orchestral players in Years 10–13; the orchestra regularly performs in our lunchtime concerts at Great St Mary’s, as well as at West Road and in other concerts throughout the year.

Rock School

Our thriving Rock School activity sees a large number of students who play electric and bass guitar, keyboards, or who sing, form into bands, rehearsing both cover songs and original material. There are a number of sessions each week, scheduled according to year group. KS3 String Ensemble and KS3 Wind Ensemble

These ensembles are particularly suited to students in Years 7–9 who want to gain experience in playing ensemble music before progressing to Symphony Orchestra or Big Band. All students who have lessons on wind or string instruments are welcome to join; they take part in a number of concerts during the year and sometimes combine with other ensembles to play particular pieces.

The Singers

This is a non-auditioned choir for students in Years 10–13 (and for boys in Year 9 who are serious singers and whose voices have changed). The choir sings mostly classical repertoire; in addition to performing in major concerts in school, The Singers are at the centre of the Carol Service in Great St Mary’s, and the Leavers’ Service in Gonville and Caius College Chapel. The choir is often asked to perform as part of external concerts – for example, in Queens’ College Chapel or Ely Cathedral.

Symphony Orchestra

This is a very large orchestra, which is open without audition to all players of standard orchestral instruments in Years 9–13, and to more advanced students (usually about Grade 6+) in Years 7 and 8. The orchestra performs in the autumn concert and at West Road, both accompanying concertos played by the Upper Sixth and playing a variety of other orchestral repertoire, often from the nineteenth century. The orchestra is sometimes joined by Big Band to perform film music scores.

Theory Club (Grades 1–5)

We offer theory clubs at lunchtime to students in both Key Stage 3 and 4, to help them prepare for taking Grade 5 theory, which is a requirement for taking Grade 6 and above ABRSM exams. Students work through the Music Theory in Practice workbooks at their own pace, with teacher explanations and support as needed.

Years 7–9 Choirs

We have a large choir for students in Years 7–9 (which we sometimes divide into a Year 7 Choir and a Years 8–9 Choir) who sing in school concerts and at the Carol Service in Great St Mary’s Church.

Whatever the pathway, we aim to foster a deep appreciation of sport’s capacity to shape character and community. Stephen Perse Cambridge

Timetabled Sixth Form Enrichment

Enrichment and Sport, Fitness & Active Wellbeing is a key part of our educational provision at the Sixth Form and an important part of the Stephen Perse Cambridge educational journey. This is a chance for students to develop skills in an area they are passionate about, or to try something completely new.

At the start of September students indicate their activity preferences for the year. Some activities take place in particular terms e.g team sports, but others will take place in certain terms depending on the demand for the activity. A small number of activities require a whole year commitment.

One lesson per week of Sport, Fitness and Active Wellbeing is compulsory (Wednesday morning or Thursday afternoon). Students are expected to wear Stephen Perse Cambridge PE kit, which can be ordered from www.schoolblazer.com or from the PFA second hand uniform shop. The minimum requirement is a black school branded top and plain black shorts/leggings.

The Enrichment programme provides an opportunity for you to try new things and discover new interests. This includes activities such as:

• Creative Arts

• Critical Thinking discussion group

• Controversial Art discussion group

• Science project group

• Junior School project groups (e.g maths and reading)

• Exploring the culture of Cambridge

• Language courses such as DELF, DELE, DAF or HSK

• Rock School

• Theatre construction, performance, tech or backstage

Sport, Fitness & Active Wellbeing are important components of a healthy lifestyle and this programme provides opportunities ranging from competitive team sports to activities promoting physical and mental wellbeing. Examples of activities include:

• Hockey, netball, football and cricket

• Individual activities, such as fitness sessions, climbing, paddle sports and badminton

• Active wellbeing activities, such as walking and gardening

Students are expected to take part in the following activities based on their year group and number of A Levels studied.

Year 12 Autumn

Year 12 Spring Onwards

Year 13

Year 13 are welcome to choose a third activity but must commit to this for the whole term, it is not optional once committed.

University Preparation and Extension

With ever increasing numbers of students achieving very high grades at GCSE and A Level, universities are placing more focus on applicants’ ‘super-curricular’ engagement to help them decide which students to admit; they particularly want to see evidence that students are self-motivated and want to ‘go beyond the syllabus’.

In the Sixth Form, we offer a wide variety of extension and university preparation sessions, which enrich the classroom experience and help students to prepare a strong university application. The sessions vary according to the subject, but will generally include a selection of the following activities:

• Discussion and debate

• Visiting speakers

• Wider reading

• Critical thinking

• Problem solving

• Competitions

• Support with personal statements

• Preparation for aptitude tests

• Preparation for interviews or auditions

These are offered in all A Level subjects, and in addition there are tailored sessions for those applying for engineering, law and medicine/veterinary medicine.
