Simeon Eburi - 2020-2021 SPE-GCS Chair How to Volunteer with SPE? It is the second month of the year, and while we are all hoping for positive changes in our personal lives, around the industry and around the world, we will need to continue to be patient and resilient for a little longer. On the positive side, some COVID-19 vaccines have been approved and are being administered to front-line workers and a prioritized list of individuals. This gives us hope that one day soon, the pandemic will end or at least be under control, but we should all continue to be safe. I also know that many companies in our industry had to make difficult personnel decisions last year to survive, and therefore some of our affected members are actively looking for new opportunities. For those members in transition, I want to remind you that the section has a Members in Transition Committee where SPE members and affiliates can receive support from the section, look for new opportunities, network, support each other and volunteer with SPE to remain active. This month, I will talk about how to volunteer with SPE, as it may not be intuitive for members who are not currently active.

In my August Connect Chair’s Corner article Q&A, I explained how I started to volunteer with SPE-GCS through the section’s Young Professionals (YP) Committee after about three years of inactivity with SPE. Like many SPE student members, it was not clear to me at the time how to become active as an SPE member or how to volunteer as a professional. I am sure the information was right in front of me, but because I was new to the city and had a very limited network, it took time and courage to attend a YP board meeting and get more actively involved. Some of the biggest questions I had when I first became active were: How many SPE members willing to volunteer were in a similar situation, not knowing how to volunteer? Why doesn’t a large section like GCS have an overabundance of volunteers? For a section of around 11,000 members, why aren’t all of our section events sold out?

I learned that not all our members are active because they may have personal or professional reasons for not attending section events designed for SPE members to maximize their membership. Most of our members are either not aware of all the opportunities, not proactive in seeking out volunteering opportunities or, as in my case, they're waiting

to be invited to volunteer or to see an advertisement on a section email, newsletter or website saying, “To volunteer with SPE-GCS, click here." Several years ago, it felt like unless an SPE member was already active or had a network of other members who could provide guidance, it was difficult to know how to volunteer, what to do or where to go. Now that I understand the section much better, I can share that volunteering with SPE is not as difficult as it seems.

Here are three ways you could start volunteering: 1. Reach out to someone who is already actively volunteering, talk to them about what they are doing and, if interested, join their technical group (or "study group," as we formally call them) or committee.

2. . Find out what groups or committees are in the section through the website, spegcs.org. Find out when they are meeting either by accessing the section calendar or by contacting the leaders of the groups or committees you are interested in. Ask them about volunteering opportunities.

3. Fill out the volunteer form at spegcs.org/forms/ volunteer-spe-gcs/. Indicate the groups or committees you are interested in and you will be connected with those groups’ leaders.

In the US, the presidential inauguration is behind us and a new administration is in place. The impact of the new administration’s policies on the energy industry is still unknown. WTI Crude and Brent Crude oil prices continue to hover between the 40s and 50s. Baker Hughes reports showed that the rig count in the US has continued to increase compared to previous months. According to Bloomberg, OPEC+ were having negotiations on oil output due to the ongoing pandemic and to continue to support an oil-market recovery.

Within SPE-GCS, here are a few highlights this month: The SPE-GCS Membership Committee has been working on a virtual initiative to network and help SPE increase and retain members. Called “SPE’s Got Talent” (SGT), it's a virtual talent show competition and showcase, which you will hear more about it in the coming months. There is a workshop on "Predictive Maintenance Using Machine Learning" by the Data Analytics study group; and a community service volunteering opportunity to serve as judge for the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH). Check the events calendar for more information and to register.

The Gulf Coast Section (GCS) was established on February 13, 1935.

The mission of GCS is part of our Bylaws which were amended by vote of the Board of Directors on February 16, 2016, and by vote of the general membership on April 20, 2017.

SPE-GCS MISSION The mission of the Section shall be the promotion of mutual cooperation in furthering the objectives of the Society of Petroleum Engineers International, Inc. This shall be accomplished by: I. Providing forums that afford members the opportunity to upgrade and maintain professional competence.

II. Providing social interaction that increases member participation in Section activities as a whole, while striving to maintain the integrity of the Section.

III. Supporting programs in local primary and secondary schools to encourage students to develop their abilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

IV. Supporting engineering programs at the university level.

V. Enhancing the image of the Oil and Gas Industry by sponsoring community service programs.

The oil and gas industry generally has accepted a policy of sustainable energy that makes use of all available energy resources. However, John Westwood, managing director of UK consultancy Douglas-Westwood Ltd, said the oil and gas industry already is competing with the wind industry for materials and personnel for offshore operations, primarily overseas. Some $16 billion is expected to be spent on installation of 4.5 GW of new wind-power capacity in Europe over the next five years, up from 1.1 GW today. The UK will be the biggest market, with 2.4 GW of new capacity forecast in 2012. “Serious amounts of steel are heading offshore,” said Westwood. “Offshore wind and oil and gas are competing for the same resources and with onshore wind power.”

Efforts to bring some humanity into Russia’s treatment of former OAO Yukos officials may be bearing some fruit.

While the fate of former Yukos Chief Executive Mikhail Khordorkovsky remains ambiguous, some gains apparently have been made for former Yukos Executive Vice-President Vasily Aleksanyan. Moscow’s Simonovsky Court on Feb. 6 ruled to hospitalize Aleksanyan and suspend his trial. The court handed down the ruling based on a document provided Feb. 5 by the Matrosskaya Tishina detention facility’s administration, which said that Aleksanyan had cancer and needed treatment. The editorial notes that Putin, by contrast, has used the law as “a club” to bludgeon opponents. It had been reported that Moscow courts were refusing medical treatment to Aleksanian, who is on trial for money laundering and has late-stage AIDS. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Russian aim was to force Aleksanian “to testify against imprisoned oil tycoon Mikial Khodorkovsky.” Not least, the paper noted the especially cruel point that “without the treatment, Aleksanian will die.” The Inquirer said, “It is almost impossible to believe this case is going on in the 21st century, in a country whose president hobnobs with European and American leaders.”

The Eagle Ford shale play in South Texas has attracted more than 3,100 permitted locations since Petrohawk Energy Corp revealed the first discovery in October 2008, the Texas Railroad Commission reports. Ninety percent of the Eagle Ford drilling permits approved by the commission since 2007 were issued in 2011. There were 368 Eagle Ford producing oil leases in 2011 compared with 72 in 2010 and 40 in 2009, and there were 550 Eagle Ford producing gas wells in 2011 compared with 158 in 2010 and 67 in 2009, the TRC said.

Lease production reports indicate that the Eagle Ford formation produced about 1,000 bbl of oil or less per year in 2004-07 from vertical wells before the horizontal drilling frenzy began. The Eagle Ford produced 83,744 bbl of condensate in 2008, 839,490 bbl in 2009, 7.1 million bbl in 2010, and 16.8 million bbl in January-October 2011.

It produced 103,802 bbl of crude oil in 2008, 308,139 bbl in 2009, 4.3 million bbl in 2010, and 13.8 million bbl in January-October 2011. Gas production grew from 1 bcf in 2008 to 19 bcf in 2009, 110 bcf in 2010, and 212 bcf in January-October 2011. EOG Resources Inc, Houston, said in December 2011, it is the largest oil producer in the Eagle Ford, with output as of Sept. 30, 2011, of 53,000 b/d of oil equivalent, 78 percent oil.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. announces plans to cut its operated dry gas drilling rig count to 24 rigs, a decline of 50 rigs from its 2011 average operated dry gas rig count, citing "the lowest natural gas prices in the past 10 years." The drilling reductions will be made in US unconventional gas plays.

Separately, Simmons & Co International forecasts that gas supply will exceed demand by 1.2 bcfd this year, leading to full storage in October and curtailments being required to balance the market. Working gas storage capacity in the US is estimated to be 4,150 bcf. At year-end 2011, gas in storage was 3,472 bcf. The Oklahoma City independent plans to reduce its operated dry gas drilling activity by 50 percent from current levels by the second quarter. Chesapeake anticipates its lowest level of dry gas drilling capital expenditures since 2005. Specifically, during the second quarter, Chesapeake plans to have reduced its drilling activity in both the Haynesville and Barnett shales to six operated rigs each and to 12 operated rigs in the dry gas area of the Marcellus shale in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Oklahoma Corporation Commission Chairman Robert Anthony noticed one difference immediately at the Natural Gas Committee's session on hydraulic fracturing at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners 2016 winter meeting from one at the NARUC winter meeting six years earlier. Close to 400 people attended the 2010 discussion, which required a much larger room, he told the 10 state utility commissioners and 40 audience members on Feb. 16 in Washington, DC. Anthony said the proceedings were much livelier in 2010, adding, "We've all learned a lot since then."

Earlier that day, however, two environmental groups, the Sierra Club and Public Justice, filed what they called a "fracking lawsuit" against three independent producers in US District Court for Western Oklahoma in response to increased Sooner State seismic activity. Another speaker insisted that quakes associated with well completions are extremely rare. "There have been fewer than 10 in the US," said Richard J. Simmers, who leads the oil and gas division in Ohio's Department of Natural Resources. "Oklahoma may have its faults, but they're all geologic," Anthony observed as the session concluded. "My state issued its strongest directive yet today to cut back on oil and gas disposal well volumes near those faults. In an order covering 5,281 square miles and 245 disposal wells going into the Arbuckle formation, the OCC's oil and gas division will require operators to reduce wastewater disposal volumes by more than 500,000 b/d, or about 40 percent.

Global energy demand between 2014 and 2035 is expected to rise 34 percent, an average of 1.4 percent per year, with fossil fuels remaining "the dominant form of energy over the period," according to the 2016 edition of the BP Energy Outlook. Despite the rapid growth of other energy sources, the firm projects that fossil fuels will fulfill 60 percent of the expected demand increase and account for almost 80 percent of the world's total energy supplies in 2035.

FEBRUARY 2021 44 million b/d by 2035, BP says. By 2035, coal's share in the energy mix is expected at an all-time low, with gas replacing it as the second-largest fuel source. Non-fossil fuels are projected to grow even faster than anticipated in last year's outlook. Renewables, including biofuels, are projected to grow at 6.6 percent per year, with their share in the energy mix up to 9 percent by 2035 from 3 percent currently.

THE REST OF THE YARN This month ... The story of “The Man Who Was Texas” comes to a close.

McCarthy could not bring himself to attend the big Irish wake on June 9, 1986, the night the Shamrock closed, nor could he attend the auction in which 35,000 bits of his memories, hundreds of Shamrock towels and robes, and thousands of pieces of Shamrock dinnerware went to the highest bidder. One man bought one of the bars and opened it as the Shamrock Café in a Houston strip mall.

McCarthy’s kidneys gave out a month later. Doctors wheeled him out of surgery at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and Faustine placed him in a nursing home. He lingered for nearly a year, finally dying a day after his 81st birthday on December 26, 1988. The newspapers hailed him as a “Texas giant” even as they tried to explain to younger readers who he had been. A thousand people attended his memorial service, where a bar singer from the Shamrock’s glory days led renditions of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Londonderry Air.” They buried him in Houston’s Glenwood Cemetery, steps from the grave of Howard Hughes. “He was a tough man, and the drinking and fight stories are true enough, but he wasn’t anything like that character in Giant,” one old friend told a reporter. “He was a man, and he took a good deal of pride in that fact. I don’t think there’s ever been anyone like him, before or since.”

Demand for natural gas will increase the fastest among the fossil fuels, rising 1.8 percent per year while oil demand will rise steadily at 0.9 percent per year, although its share of the energy mix continues to decline, the outlook indicates.

Global shale gas production is projected to increase at 5.6 percent per year, with the share of shale gas in total gas production rising to 25 percent by 2035 from 10 percent in 2014. US shale, tight oil elsewhere, Brazilian deepwater, Canadian oil sands, and biofuels together will rise by 16 million b/d, accounting for about half of non-OPEC production in 2035. OPEC is likely to act to maintain its market share of 40 percent, lifting output by 7 million b/d to Back to Table of Contents

I am a freshman at UC Berkeley and plan on majoring in geoscience.

After volunteering at the Houston Energy Day, I became more interested in renewable energy. I searched for opportunities and learned about the OTC Energy Challenge Competition, which I later learned had SPE as a sponsor. I decided to create an Energy Challenge Club at my high school. Our prompt was to find a way to effectively utilize energy from the ocean wave to power offshore platforms. Our submission was awarded the Digital Award, leading us to pursue a

What is your favorite thing about SPE? My favorite thing about SPE is how it creates a global network for like-minded people to connect.

Abhinandan Kohli (Abhi) How did you first get involved with SPE? I joined SPE in 2008 while at the Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM).

What SPE study groups, committees or volunteer events have you been involved in?

When I first joined, I volunteered actively and soon became the SPE-ISM student chapter secretary. After graduating from college in 2011, I joined Royal Dutch Shell in India and volunteered with the Bangalore section, where I was elected the YP chair and later the section secretary. In the Netherlands, I served as a social media chair for the SPE-NL section before moving to Houston. I currently serve on the Membership Committee, the Community Service Group, and the Reservoir Study Group.

What is your REAL job and educational background?

I am a petroleum engineer with 10 years of industry experience spanning technical and managerial projects in subsurface project maturation and development planning with Shell. I hold a bachelor’s in petroleum engineering from IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, India.

What is your favorite thing about SPE? SPE is a great platform to network with other like-minded oil and gas industry professionals.

Whenever I move to a new assignment, SPE is the first ‘family’ that I join. SPE section members have supported me everywhere from the Netherlands to Oman and Iraq to the US.

DATA ANALYTICS Workshop: Predictive Maintenance Using Machine Learning Equipment failures result in costly unplanned downtime of operations and can lead to serious safety and environmental incidents. Predicting failures in advance and pinpointing their source unlocks significant value. Application of machine learning to real-time measurements and physics simulations provides a strong predictive maintenance framework for avoiding catastrophic failures and reducing costs.

The Data Analytics Study Group is pleased to collaborate with MathWorks to offer a hands-on workshop on predictive maintenance using machine learning. In this four-hour, instructor-led, online workshop, participants will tackle an oilfield equipment failure problem. Participants will build data-driven models using time series data and predict faults.

Inho Kim is a senior application engineer specializing in the energy industry. Prior to joining MathWorks, he worked at Halliburton as a principal R&D engineer in corporate automation CoE and with the Sperry drilling automation team. At MathWorks, he focuses on modeling multi-physics systems related to the energy industry, predictive maintenance and reinforcement learning applications. Inho holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from Arizona State University.

NORTHSIDE Improving Frac Plug Reliability in Plug and Perf Applications Multi-stage horizontal wells now account for nearly 90% of new wells drilled in the U.S. Plug and Perf (PnP) is the dominant completion method and is executed up to 100 times in one well. The well operator rightly has expectations for the highest frac plug reliability because expensive frac jobs must be pumped into the correct perforations. Purchasing a frac plug with a claim of high reliability is a good start. But with close to 500 system combinations of frac plug, frac ball, setting tool, and power charge available for 5 ½” casing applications, how can high reliability be assured in the field? And how do wellbore conditions affect frac plug reliability? By attending this presentation, you will acquire knowledge on how to increase frac plug reliability in your PnP completions.

COMPLETIONS AND PRODUCTION New Slot Flow Testing for Unconventional Fracturing Hydraulic fracturing technology has experienced many different trends. Many of the changes are based on learnings using conventional fracture mechanisms and studies that captured the basic flow characteristics. However, these miss significant factors in unconventional fracture mechanisms, including tortuosity, variable width, leakoff and the ability for in-situ analysis of the materials after being pumped.

GENERAL MEETING Developing Unconventionals Brings Benefits to University Lands and Fund University Lands (UL) manages the surface and mineral interests of 2.1 million acres of land in West Texas for the benefit of the Permanent University Fund (PUF), which supports both The University of Texas and Texas A&M University systems. This presentation will introduce UL and the various natural resources residing within it. It will then address the impact of horizontal drilling and massive hydraulic fracturing (MHF) on unconventional reservoirs and UL. It will cover the impact of low oil prices and the potential impact of “no fracturing” legislation on UL and related royalties.

Dr. Hongjie Xiong is the senior engineering advisor for University Lands (UL), where he currently focuses on unconventional completions, well performance and well spacing. Previously, Xiong was the global reservoir engineering advisor for ConocoPhillips, where he evaluated exploration and development projects. WESTSIDE The Effects of Surface Data Acquisition Methods on Well Performance Evaluations Reservoir and production engineers need high-quality data to evaluate a well’s performance so they can provide feedback to completions engineers. This presentation will show how different surface data acquisition methods affect the evaluation of well performance using common RTA techniques. It will include recommended methods of data acquisition and demonstrate how these methods produce less ambiguous results.

Examples presented in this presentation will show how poor data quality can be misleading when it comes to well performance evaluations. Comparisons of results will be used to illustrate the impact that good- and poor-quality data can have on evaluating the relative difference in well performance due to changes in completion designs.

RESERVOIR

Darryl Tompkins has spent his career working in reservoir, completions and operations engineering in mature fields, gas storage and unconventionals. He is currently the CTO of Revo Testing Technologies based in Houston, TX, where he works on developing technologies for unconventional well performance evaluations and production optimization. He is a registered professional engineer in Ontario, Canada, and holds a BSc in mechanical engineering from the University of Windsor.

Appraisal and Development of Shale Reservoirs: Hard Science or Rorschach Test?

A multitude of small- and medium-sized independents have taken part in the "Shale Revolution" in the US. While potentially offering substantial returns, these companies usually do not have the technical resources of the majors.

Consequently, a substantial amount of capital has been invested with relatively sparse and sometimes low-quality data, where the most important variables must be inferred, often with appreciable error bars. Technical teams must do their best to build a picture of the reservoir they are thinking of acquiring or investing in.

This presentation explores this process and sheds light on related difficulties. We present a case where small differences at the beginning of the process can lead to vastly different development plans down the line.

Manuel Cossio is a senior reservoir engineer at Stronghold Resource Partners, where his role centers on the subsurface evaluation and asset appraisal of unconventional plays. He previously spent seven years at Pioneer Natural Resources, with the last five years on the Permian Asset Team. Cossio has a BS in aerospace engineering from Imperial College London and an MS in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Past Scholarship Winner: Mark Castiglione The Scholarship Committee conducted a survey of past recipients of the SPEGCS scholarship. If you’re considering donating to the SPE-GCS scholarship fund or hiring an SPE-GCS scholarship winner, you’ll be glad to know that the program has enjoyed considerable success over the past six decades. Here is Mark Castiglione's story:

“Receiving the SPEGCS scholarship was a boost of confidence for pursuing a petroleum engineering degree."

I received the SPE-GCS scholarship for my freshman year as a petroleum engineering student at Texas Tech University. My college experience was overall very good, and I am grateful for Dr. Scott Frailey, one of my professors at Texas Tech. He really challenged us as students and was instrumental in preparing me for the “real world” as a petroleum engineer.

While at Texas Tech, I served as president of the SPE student section.

Upon graduation, I began my career as a reservoir engineer for Meridian Oil

(later known as Burlington Resources).

After experience as a production engineer and subsequently pursuing an MBA, I become especially focused on the M&A side of the business. I have had the opportunity to serve at the officer level at several companies and have worked collaboratively with some great folks in our business. Most recently, I was the CEO of Alta Mesa Resources until we sold our assets in the spring of 2020. I am currently partnered with Randy Limbacher at Meridian Energy, an energy advisory firm.

Receiving the SPE-GCS scholarship was a boost of confidence for pursuing a petroleum engineering degree. I remember leaving school one day in my senior year of high school and going with my parents to an SPE luncheon downtown, probably the Petroleum Club, and being recognized along with other scholarship recipients. It felt like such a big deal at the time! I would advise today’s SPE-GCS scholarship students to work hard, keep a positive attitude and find the students and professors that will be great partners in helping you become the best engineer you can be. Congratulations!

SCHOLARSHIP SPE-GCS Scholarship Application Deadline is Approaching SPE-GCS scholarship applications are now being accepted for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Applications are due Friday, Feb. 21, 2021, by 11:59pm.

The SPE-GCS selects high school seniors for annual college scholarships that are renewable for up to four years at $2,000/ semester ($4,000/academic year). The program is dedicated to increasing interest in the energy industry among graduating high school seniors and retaining students currently enrolled in science and engineering academic disciplines.

The application process requires that the student submit a written essay and complete an application including their intended college major and choice of university, standardized test scores, letters of reference and high school transcripts.

Students are also evaluated for extra-curricular and teamwork activities. The SPE-GCS Scholarship Committee reviews application packages and invites a subset of applicants to participate in a professional interview.

In many instances, selected students are in the top 10 percent of their class in GPA. In a typical year, about one-third to one-half of the applicants receive an invitation to interview. The committee selects the final group of scholarship winners based on the results of the interview. In a typical year, less than one-half of the applicants who are interviewed will receive the scholarship. Thus, of the students who apply for the scholarship, typically one-sixth to one-quarter of the students are awarded the SPE-GCS scholarship.
