Saudi Arabia’s position in the global petrochemical market is predicted to grow substantially during the next five years due to an ongoing and significant growth wave that will add substantial petrochemical capacity.

There have been nine “deepwater” (greater than 1,000 feet) oil and natural gas discoveries announced by operators in the Gulf of Mexico through November 2005, the US Minerals Management Service reported. (That’s nothing compared to today’s 3,000-meter deepwater international wells).

The US Senate kept Congress true to form Dec. 21 when it rejected the latest effort to authorize oil and gas leasing of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Coastal Plain.

China reportedly has large volumes of low-permeability natural gas resources with unique characteristics that could be exploited with appropriate technologies. At present, however, lack of development and management technologies have hindered effective exploitation of these resources. (Hello shale plays!)

US drilling fell for the fifth consecutive week, down by 26 rotary rigs to 1,764 still working during the week ended Dec. 19, compared with a rig count of 1,809 in the same period last year.

Forecasters predict that 2009 will be characterized by uncertainty, lower oil and gas prices, a hostile Congress, demand shrinkage and major investment pullbacks by the global oil and gas industry.

JANUARY 2015

The American Petroleum Institute urges the 114th Congress to make their first energy policy priority – after approving the proposed Keystone XL crude oil pipeline – repealing the ban on US crude oil exports. It acknowledges, however, that reaching this goal won't be easy.

Mexico's energy reform has launched an ambitious process to end the long-standing state oil monopoly, holding the promise to increase oil production and bolster the overall economy (If only they would stick with it!).

The US Energy Information Administration reported it expects global oil inventories to continue to build in 2015, keeping downward pressure on oil prices. The EIA forecasts Brent crude oil prices will average $58/bbl in 2015, $11/bbl lower than projected last month, and $75/bbl in 2016. The annual average for West Texas Intermediate is expected to be $3-4/bbl below Brent.

THE REST OF THE YARN This month we meet the lawyers and the bright satellites of leadership in attendance at “The Barbecue.”

The bankers present were in many cases also lawyers, including James A. Elkins, Jr., son of the late Judge James Elkins, founder of the First City National Bank of Houston.

Judge Elkins had been a member of the powerful, unofficial 8F Crowd, with cronies including Herman and George Brown, Gus Wortham, and others, who met regularly in a suite in Houston’s Lamar Hotel and exerted great influence on city and state politics. Before his death, Judge Elkins founded the law firm that became known as Vinson, Elkins, Searls, Connally, & Smith.

Three of Houston’s law firms at the time were among the largest half-dozen in America, and their influence and interests ranged widely across the country. Vinson, Elkins, Searls, Connally & Smith maintained stocks of stationery with Connally’s name missing from the letterhead to facilitate his forays into government.

The bright satellites of leadership passed quickly through the receiving line: Anne Armstrong, Nixon’s adviser from Texas and a favorite on the national Republican luncheon circuit; Erik Jonsson, Dallas’s mayor and the political force behind what turned out to be the world’s largest airport; Ima Hogg, aging daughter of the notorious Texas governor Jim Hogg; and A. A. McAllister, the former mayor of San Antonio and an old Connally ally.

The mission of GCS is part of our Bylaws which were amended by vote of the Board of Directors on January 16, 2016, and by vote of the general membership on January 20, 2017.

SPE-GCS MISSION The mission of the Section shall be the promotion of mutual cooperation in furthering the objectives of the Society of Petroleum Engineers International, Inc. This shall be accomplished by: I. Providing forums that afford members the opportunity to upgrade and maintain professional competence.

II. Providing social interaction that increases member participation in Section activities as a whole, while striving to maintain the integrity of the Section.

III. Supporting programs in local primary and secondary schools to encourage students to develop their abilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

IV. Supporting engineering programs at the university level.

V. Enhancing the image of the Oil and Gas Industry by sponsoring community service programs.

How did you first get involved with SPE? I’ve been involved with SPE since 2010, when I volunteered as a publicity committee head for my school’s SPE student chapter in its inaugural year.

I’ve volunteered with SPE International several times dating back to 2016, and I’ll be serving as a PhD division judge in the section’s upcoming paper contest.

I’m currently volunteering with SPE-GCS as the events planning team lead for the data analytics study group.

What is your REAL job and educational background?

I’m currently a reservoir engineer in Chevron’s technical center in Houston, TX. I have a PhD in petroleum engineering from Penn State University, and a BS in petroleum engineering from the American University in Cairo, Egypt.

What is your favorite thing about SPE? My favorite part about SPE is connecting with some of the greatest minds in the oil and gas industry. The people I’ve met as I’ve volunteered with SPE have made volunteering very special and fulfilling. I get to hone my leadership skills, give back to the community and make connections with current and future oil and gas professionals from all over the world.

It's Good to Talk: Downhole Communications in Well Operations

WHEN

The oil industry is notoriously conservative when it comes to adopting new technology. Remotely activated downhole tools and real time data have existed in drilling and well-test environments, but their adoption into the completions world has been slow. This presentation will explain the function and performance of these technologies and the roles they can fulfill. Case studies from across the industry will be presented to demonstrate how their adoption can bring new real-time data to traditional operations and greatly cut the cost and risk of operations. The discussion will also cover how remotely activated tools facilitate the devolvement of entirely new methods of well construction, installation, startup and production possibilities.

EUAN MURDOCH - SPE DISTINGUISHED LECTURER

Euan Murdoch has held a variety of positions within completions, drilling and formation evaluation. He is responsible for the development and commercialization of the RFID completions product line, which encompasses the design of remotely activated downhole tools used in completions. Murdoch holds a number of patents for downhole tool and system design. He is a twotime winner of the OTC Spotlight on New Technology award as well as the E&P Meritorious Award for Engineering Achievement.

Poroelastic Nature of Multi-Stranded Hydraulic Fractures in Heterogeneous Unconventional Rocks

WHEN

Observations from recent core-through experiments in unconventional shales show existence of hundreds of sub-parallel fractures. While core analysis suggests many of these fractures were created during or after hydraulic fracturing, their genesis and structure remain unclear. A hypothesis that the observed fractures are connected to the main hydraulic fractures and result from complex fracture propagation processes has been suggested.

In this presentation, we describe a very different mechanism for generating multiple extension fractures. A leak-off into heterogeneous layers with sufficiently high hydraulic diffusivity results in the area of tensile effective stresses adjacent to the propagating hydraulic fractures. A simple solution is presented, along with the effect of the key subsurface parameters on the extent of the potential failure zone.

GENERAL MEETING Impact of Climate Issues on the Energy Industry through 2050 Climate change and Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) is increasingly viewed as an existential threat to a sustainable future. Demands to “decarbonize” energy are growing rapidly and pose a serious challenge to the energy industry.

This presentation summarizes the need for oil and gas as a worldwide energy source at mid-century and beyond. It also highlights ideas of several key thinkers regarding climate issues and industry activities to get to “zero net emissions” by mid-century.

Industry leaders and professionals must avoid thinking “we are not climate scientists” as a barrier to engaging proactively in addressing climate issues. Broad systems analyses are needed to develop energy solutions and SPE professionals can contribute a range of expertise.

PHILLIP GROSSWEILER

Phillip Grossweiler has more than 40 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, including a 25-year career at ExxonMobil. Over the past 15 years with M&H Energy Services, Grossweiler has consulted for Anadarko, Petronas, ExxonMobil, Conoco and Enersea Transport. Grossweiler has a BS in marine engineering from the US Coast Guard Academy, MS degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an MBA from Houston Baptist University.

Max van Adrichem joined the energy & power investment banking group at Piper Sandler® in 2021.

Previously, van Adrichem was a director in the corporate & investment banking group at BMO Capital Markets. Prior to that, he was an associate director in Scotiabank’s investment banking group and an engineer at Cameron International. He has a long track record of successfully advising upstream clients on a wide variety of transactions including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings and capital raises.

Van Adrichem earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas McCombs School of Business.

This presentation will provide an overview of current global crude and natural gas supply & demand fundamentals. WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Past Scholarship Winner: Boone Bajgier The Scholarship Committee conducted a survey of past recipients of the SPE-GCS scholarship. If you’re considering donating to the SPE-GCS scholarship fund or hiring an SPEGCS scholarship winner, you’ll be glad to know that the program has enjoyed considerable success over the past six decades. Here is Boone Bajgier’s story:

“The SPE-GCS scholarship helped me catch a vision for the future."

Through most of my career, I’ve been involved in production operations engineering with a heavy field focus.

At Anadarko, the first five years of my career were field-based positions.

I started as a field engineer based in Vernal, UT, working the Greater Natural Buttes asset in the Uintah Basin. I then transferred to Kermit, TX, where I worked the Delaware Basin in the Permian. I also worked on the subsurface technology team in Anadarko’s reservoir group, where I focused on strategically placing bottom hole pressure gauges for enhanced development learnings during the planning and execution of

HFTS#2, which was a great experience.

In 2019 I joined Advance Energy Partners as a production engineer, and I currently function as a manager for production engineering and well operations. In 2021, I was honored to be named to Oil and Gas Investor’s “Forty Under 40” list.

I’ve been an SPE member since 2008.

I’ve served SPE in multiple roles, including as SPE Permian Basin PR and advertising chair (2018-2020), SPE-TAMU student chapter vice president (2012-2013), Southwest Petroleum short course reservoir operations chair (2018-2019), and I served on the URTeC - Midland Workshop Committee (2019).

The SPE-GCS scholarship helped me catch a vision for the future.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CO2-EOR to CCS: the Maturation and Migration of a Technology After several years of equivocating, most geoscientists view global climate change, and its anthropogenic causes, as a reality. Many also view subsurface storage of CO2 as a new technology. While there are many new factors in this storage, subsurface CO2 storage has been going on for more than 50 years in the form of CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR).

This presentation reviews the progress of field implementation of CO2-EOR and the lessons learned. The review also provides insights into how these lessons will inform subsurface storage.

LARRY W. LAKE

Larry W. Lake is a professor in the Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, where he holds the Shahid and Sharon Ullah Chair. Lake holds BSE and PhD degrees in chemical engineering from Arizona State University and Rice University, respectively. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 technical papers and four textbooks, and the editor of three bound volumes.

SCHOLARSHIP Gulf Coast Section 2022-2023 Annual Scholarship Applications The Scholarship Committee is dedicated to increasing interest in the energy industry among graduating high school seniors and retaining students currently enrolled in science and energy-related academic disciplines. Through recruiting fairs, special event tours, summer employment internships and direct contact during students' academic careers, the committee works to ensure a steady flow of focused, high quality and talented graduates enters the energy industry.

This year, the application process for the SPE-GCS undergraduate scholarship can be completed and returned to the SPE office only via email. The application is for a scholarship of $2,000 per semester, and all applications are due by February 20, 2022, by 11:59pm. It is important for candidates to familiarize themselves with the application process as soon as possible.

To apply for the SPE Gulf Coast Section Annual Scholarship you must: • • • • •

Be a graduating high school senior Be planning to study science or engineering as a freshman in college next year Have an ACT score of at least 24 and an SAT score of at least 1200 Have a permanent address in one of the 29 counties in the Gulf Coast Section Be a US citizen or permanent resident

The 29 counties included in the SPE Gulf Coast Section are Austin, Brazoria, Brazos, Burleson, Chambers, Colorado, Fayette, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Jasper, Jefferson, Lee, Liberty, Madison, Matagorda, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Tyler, Walker, Waller, Washington and Wharton.

If a candidate does not attend a high school in one of the 29 counties mentioned above, or they are not a US citizen or permanent resident, they are not eligible for this SPE section scholarship.
