September 2016

“The key to a healthy life is having a healthy mind.” – Richard Davidson Dr. Alois Alzheimer was fascinated by the mind and understood the importance of its HEALTH. His life’s work focused on researching illnesses of the brain. In 1901, Dr. Alzheimer began observing a 51 year old patient, Auguste Deter. His observations of this patient, while she was living as well as his research of her brain after her death, would become the groundwork and foundation for a key publication he released in 1906 called “Presenile and Senile Dementia”. One of his mentors and contemporaries, Emil Kraepelin, would later name the disease he described “Alzheimer’s Disease” in Dr. Alzheimer’s honor.

Known for having a close clinical relationship with his patients as well as using new scientific tools to link

symptoms to changes in the physical brain, Dr. Alzheimer is considered a pioneer in the field and has left behind a legacy that has positively impacted science and international research. New information regarding this disease is being discovered daily. Organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association work to end Alzheimer’s disease through research as well as develop treatment options. Experts agree that one of the best treatments of the disease is prevention. Keep your mind active and healthy through regular exercise, a healthy diet, mental stimulation, quality sleep, stress management and an active social life. Be involved in the FUN this month to keep your brain healthy!

Healthy Habits:

Food for Thought:

September 2016 marks the fifth global World Alzheimer’s Month to raise awareness about the disease. Be aware of the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s, for example:

Add these “superfoods” to your daily diet and increase your odds of maintaining a healthy brain:

• Memory loss that disrupts daily life • Challenges in planning or solving problems • Confusion with time or place

• Blueberries: Steven Pratt, MD, calls them “brainberries” because they protect the brain from oxidative stress • Wild Salmon: rich in Omega-3s and anti-inflammatory substances • Nuts & Seeds: great source of vitamin E which corresponds with less cognitive decline

HUGs: Humanity United for Good Dr. Alzheimer, September’s featured philanthropist, is an example of someone who dedicated their life’s work to enhancing the quality of life for others. His research and scientific observations laid the groundwork for HOPE for so many facing what has become known as Alzheimer’s disease. Join the effort to spread HOPE to our community this month by continuing to support our fundraising efforts for this month’s Alzheimer’s Walk. We will be having a blue themed ice cream treat for purchase each Friday afternoon.
