September 2016

“The key to a healthy life is having a healthy mind.” – Richard Davidson Dr. Alois Alzheimer was fascinated by the mind and understood the importance of its HEALTH. His life’s work focused on researching illnesses of the brain. In 1901, Dr. Alzheimer began observing a 51 year old patient, Auguste Deter. His observations of this patient, while she was living as well as his research of her brain after her death, would become the groundwork and foundation for a key publication he released in 1906 called “Presenile and Senile Dementia”. One of his mentors and contemporaries, Emil Kraepelin, would later name the disease he described “Alzheimer’s Disease” in Dr. Alzheimer’s honor.

Organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association work to end Alzheimer’s disease through research as well as develop treatment options. Experts agree that one of the best treatments of the disease is prevention. Healthy Habits:

Food for Thought:

September 2016 marks the fifth global World Alzheimer’s Month to raise awareness about the disease. Be aware of the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s, for example:

Add these “superfoods” to your daily diet and increase your odds of maintaining a healthy brain:

• Memory loss that disrupts daily life • Challenges in planning or solving problems • Confusion with time or place

Endless FUN - All Month Long!

HUGs: Humanity United for Good Dr. Alzheimer, September’s featured philanthropist, is an example of someone who dedicated their life’s work to enhancing the quality of life for others. His research and scientific observations laid the groundwork for HOPE for so many facing what has become known as Alzheimer’s disease. Join the effort to spread HOPE to our community this month by continuing to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. With the money raised the staff will walk on your behalf on the 10th in support of this wonderful cause.
