2014 in Review Spectrum’s Incredible Fun & Dining Teams Gathered Together in Early May for the Annual Fun & Food Conference in Denver, Colorado!

Times of Our Lives

Decade of Family: 1950-1959 By Lindsey Glenn

As we cruise into June, the warm days just get a little sweeter, don’t they? This month, as we continue to celebrate the Times of Our Lives, we are so excited to delight you with a myriad of nostalgic and fun activities surrounding the Nifty 1950s. So much learning, team-building, brainstorming, and fun was had by all!

The Fun Team poses for a great group photo!

We had a 1950s Day! Everyone dressed up, ate at a vintage diner, and went bowling together.

Lincoln Meadows won for best flavor - and it was DELICIOUS! Congrats to a great team!

The teams also went on a scavenger hunt through the city. Congrats to our group of winners!

Villas of Shelby won best presentation for their great use of Spectrum’s Core Values!

Together, we created a masterpiece, just like we try to do with our jobs every day!

We brought Fun and Food together for a Guacamole competition. Our judges really had their mouths full!

Palmilla WOWED judges with great flavor AND a spectacular performance, making them the overall competition winners!

The Decade of Family: 1950-1959 It seems more than appropriate that this would be the decade focused on family. The USA was still recovering from World War II. Brave servicemen had come home to their wives with a new lease on life and the strong desire to start or grow a family. Americans were now able to purchase items that were not available during the war which brought on a wave of new consumerism, and allowed for corporate expansion and many new job opportunities. Men who were away at war were now able to re-enter the work force, and thousands of women across the country were able to return to the home to nurture their growing families. Despite the new conflicts developing across the globe with Korea and the USSR, things were looking up for American culture and innovation. Television continued on its path to extreme popularity as most households now had a television in the family room, and the world had access to news and entertainment like never before. Becoming a prominent part of daily life, families would gather around the set to tunein for popular shows like American Bandstand and Davy Crockett. Here, they would eat meals, play board games, and spend quality time

together. Color television also made its debut during this time. Television began to mold America. Owning a car was also the norm, and driving for leisure became even more popular. Road trips to theme parks like the new Disneyland became a must-do activity among families. For many, cruising the new highway systems just for the fun of it became the trend. Business owners recognized the new fad and roadways became spattered with social stops like drive-in movies, diners, and burger joints to cater to the growing crowd of every day travelers. Teenagers capitalized on the exciting new trend the most, and separated themselves from the older generation with their own unique fashion sense, musical tastes, and dance styles. Poodle skirts, saddle shoes, pony tails, and blue jeans swept the nation’s young generation. Rock and Roll music was introduced to the population when artists like Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly entered the scene, breaking the mold and paving the way for modern music. Fashion and entertainment had more attitude than ever. This was the Nifty Fifties, and is one of the most fun and memorable eras of our lifetime. Come and cruise with us this month as we celebrate the 1950s with activities and events dedicated to the fashions and fads of the times, including our monthly main event, Cruisin’ Route 66!

Thoughts from the Director of Fun

Community Spotlight

I would like to start by thanking everyone who donated non-perishable food items for our Food Drive, it was a great success. St. Joseph the Worker Food Pantry was very appreciative. We had lots of fun in May with the 1940’s, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, etc., but now it’s time to move on to June. We welcome summer on the 21st and have several events and trips planned for the month. We will be focusing on the 1950’s, as well as celebrating Flag Day, Father’s

Day, and a day of cruising Route 66. Also, don’t forget to wear your 50’s clothes on the 23rd. Steve and I had a wonderful conference in Colorado, we learned a lot and are excited about planning for the upcoming year! Enjoy the summer weather and don’t forget to stay hydrated and put on your sunscreen!

Here at Parkrose we offer a wide array of programs, but I would like to draw your attention to our Needle Work Club. This group has been meeting for about a year now and wants everyone to know that they’re always looking for more members. Don’t feel that you have to be a master at needle

Please join us for our 1950’s/Route 66 festivities on Monday June 23rd. We start off with our Walking Route 66 Club, move on to “The King Of Rock” documentary on Elvis Presley, don’t forget to eat lunch in our Parkrose 1950’s Diner, relax with a movie in our Route 66 Drive In, cruise to the Route

We know summer has arrived when the baby geese are in the pond!

Our Annual Resident Satisfaction Survey is coming out in June and I would really like to have feedback from each of you. Please come to the Survey Completing Party in the Activities room where staff will be available to help if you need it. Your feedback really helps in our planning process for the upcoming year.

Activity Highlights

Enjoy the beginning of summer and all of the great programs and entertainment Carolyn has planned throughout the month.

It has been a flurry of activity around the Community for a while now but the main work on the roof, the generator and the parking lot will be ending soon. Thank you all so much for your patience and understanding through all of the disruptions. The Pancake Breakfast was a great success and a lot of fun for everyone! NOVA has asked me to thank all of the residents and their families for the generous donation. They are not sure what they will use the money for but have assured it will go to a worthy cause!
