DANGER Ultraviolet radiation emitted from this product. Avoid exposure. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE PREMATURE AGING OF THE SKIN AND CANCER. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR; FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN SEVERE BURNS OR LONG TERM INJURY TO EYE. Never look directly into the lamp. Exposure can cause eye and skin allergy and allergic reactions. Medications or cosmetics may increase your sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. Consult physician before operating this product if you are using medications or have a history of skin problems or believe yourself especially sensitive to sunlight. For Laboratory Use Only INTRODUCTION The Spectroline CX-20 cabinets are specially designed for efficient fluorescence analysis of chromatography plates up to 20 cm square. These midsized units also provide fast, easy observation of porphyrins, lipids, vitamins, steroids and chlorinated hydrocarbons. They feature high ultraviolet intensities, filtered viewing to increase fluorescent contrast and reduce eye fatigue, and easy-to-use operating features. The CX-20 is equipped with separate 8-watt long wave (365nm) and short wave (254nm) UV tubes. Our special LONGLIFE™ filter on the short wave tube provides higher initial UV intensity and substantially longer filter life by protecting against solarization. An additional 8-watt white light tube permits visible illumination. A removable bottom panel lets you place the cabinet directly over large objects, or on a powerful Spectroline UV transilluminator to further extend the range of fluorescence analysis. The CX-20 features double-tiered, soft rubber curtains on both sides of the unit, permitting easy access to the interior and ensuring maximum shielding from external light. WARNING Please read instructions in this manual carefully. Never use this equipment in any manner not specified in these instructions because the protection provided by the equipment may be impaired. Spectroline UV-absorbing protective eye wear and face wear are available. See Accessories for model numbers. 3

UNPACKING AND INSPECTION 1. Carefully unpack and inspect the equipment for possible damage in shipment. If any damage is noted, immediately notify the carrier and supplier before attempting to use the equipment. 2. Save the shipping carton and packing materials for future storing and shipping of the equipment 3. Check the lamp’s electrical performance as soon as possible. See the ‘‘OPERATION’’ section of this manual. CABINET DESCRIPTION 1. Viewing Port Flexible eyepiece with UV-absorbing viewing filter to protect the eyes and increase fluorescent contrast. 2. OPERATION 1. Set the cabinet upright on a solid, level surface. 2. Connect the cabinet plug to a power outlet that complies with the electrical requirements specified on the unit’s label. 3. Depress the power switch to the ON position. This switch must be activated before operating each of the UV tubes or the white light tube. 4. To install the tray, simply slide it through the rubber curtains into place. MAINTENANCE The following servicing instructions are intended for limited maintenance of the cabinet. Do not perform any servicing other than that contained in these instructions. Return the cabinet to the factory for maintenance not covered in this section. WARNING To avoid the risk of electrical shock, always unplug the cabinet from its power source before cleaning or servicing. HOUSING AND VIEWING WINDOW • Immediately clean all spills from the housing using water and a mild detergent, if necessary, and wipe dry. Take care not to allow any liquids to leak into electrical components. • Periodically clean the UV-absorbing viewing window with a glass cleaner and soft cloth. • Periodically clean the tubes with a pure solvent (e.g., methanol) or a mild detergent to remove dirt. • Always handle the tubes with a clean cloth or gloves to avoid marking the tubes with fingerprints, which can in time become etched into the tube, reducing its output. OPERATOR SERVICING REPLACING THE UV FILTERS After considerable use, the filter for the short wave UV tube in the cabinet may solarize to the extent that the UV transmission is noticeably impaired. • Remove the tray from the cabinet bottom • Remove the viewing port • Turn the cabinet upside down • Unscrew and remove the right side panel of the cabinet (6 screws) • Unscrew and remove the right side of the filter casing (2 screws)

5

• Slide the filter out • Insert the new filter • Replace the filter casing panel and tighten the screws • Replace the cabinet side panel and tighten the screw REPLACING THE UV TUBES To remove any one of the tubes, follow the procedure above to remove the filter. Grasp the tube by the metal bases located at each end. Applying even pressure, gently rotate the tube a quarter turn until it loosens. The tube may now be easily removed from its sockets. Handling the new tube with gloves or a clean cloth, insert it into the socket and twist it to lock into position. Replace the filter. ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIFICATIONS The Spectroline cabinets are designed to be safe under the following conditions: • Indoor use; • Altitude up to 2,000 m (6,562 ft); • Temperature 5 °C to 40 °C (41 °F to 104 °F); • Maximum relative humidity 80% for temperatures up to 31 °C (88 °F) decreasing linearly to 50% relative humidity at 40 °C (104 °F); • Mains supply voltage fluctuations not to exceed ±10% of the nominal voltage; • Installation Category II; • Pollution Degree 2. WARRANTY The warranty policy for the CX-20 cabinet is provided on the Certificate of Limited Warranty enclosed separately with each unit.
