Family effort benefits community

Queen Anne’s Kayla Sarbach shows off the ‘house’ holding books for children to read at the grand opening of Kayla’s Little Free Library Saturday at Garfield and First Avenue West in Queen Anne.

The project, named after the 11-year-old, a sixth-grader at McClure Middle School, was a family project suggested by Sarbach’s grandmother, Libbie Loux.

Sarbach’s mother, Holly Palmer, agreed.

‘It all happened so fast,’ Palmer said Saturday.

The family found an old newspaper house on OfferUp and got to work on their charter from the Little Free Library website, https://littlefreelibrary.org, which Palmer described as ‘really cool.’

It was at that website where they got the idea to do a grand opening.

‘We got bubbles and cupcakes and goodie bags for the kids, and Nona (Loux) insisted on treats and a water bowl for the dogs too,’ Palmer said.

During the grand opening, Kayla sat at the table to welcome about two dozen neighbors, blow bubbles and hand out snacks.

‘Kayla was really happy,’ Palmer said.

As part of the Mayor’s One Day of Service, May 21, the Queen Anne Community Council and community organizations are hosting different projects in which people can participate.

Some of these activities will be for the whole family.

Interbay sewer and odor control upgrade project delayed King County plans to begin work on a planned sewer and odor control upgrade project in Interbay beginning next year. The project was slated to begin this summer, but it is now scheduled to begin mid-2023.

The project entails upgrading one mile of aging sewer pipe in the Interbay neighborhood.

The county delayed construction to allow more time for acquiring permits necessary to complete the work.

King County expects to hire a contractor as early as fall 2022. The contractor may begin preparing for construction this winter. This early work will occur in and around the Interbay Pump Station.

Neighbors can expect increased truck traffic and noise.

Major construction, including excavation, pipe installation and pipe relining will not begin until

mid-2023. After a contractor is hired, staff will release information on what people can expect during pre-construction and major construction.

Barbara Ellen Beaumont May 7, 1933 - April 15, 2022 Barbara Ellen Beaumont met the Lord on Good Friday, April 15, 2022, at Bayview Retirement Community in Seattle, WA at age 88. She was born May 7, 1933, in Philadelphia PA to William and Ellen Bennett.

Barbara graduated from Abington Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in June 1954 where she worked as a registered nurse. She married Francis Edward Beaumont on September 11, 1954 and was wed 43 years before he passed away on Father’s Day 1998.

Barbara moved to New Jersey in 1960 where she owned a fabric store for several years before moving to La Cañada CA in 1969. She worked as a cardiac nurse before retiring to Escondido CA, golfing three days a week at Escondido Country Club. She moved to Bayview Retirement Community in 2013 where she served as floor president and loved the view from her 8th-floor apartment. She moved to Assisted Living in 2020 and passed away on Bayview’s Skilled Nursing floor while in hospice care.

Barbara will be missed by her three children Bruce, Brian, and Brandies, their spouses Mary Lou, Lynn, and David, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren who called her “Grandma Great.”

A memorial service at Bayview will be planned for family and friends once pandemic restrictions are lifted for guests.

Can video games help us learn?

All kinds of games can help us learn, including some video games. They can be a fun and useful way to help you remember what you learn, too.

Our brains work hard each day to take in and process information. Ever since video games were invented, people have been asking if and how they might change our behavior and brains.

For example, people once thought that video games left players with poor eyesight and poor attention. Some scientists decided to actually test out these ideas.

Their studies have shown that some video game players actually have better attention than nonplayers.

Other studies have shown how some video game players also have sharper vision.

When it comes to learning new things, being able to focus and quickly process visual information can be helpful. But those aren’t the only things that help with learning.

That’s what I found out from my friend and Washington State University education researcher Raed Alsawaier. He studies how different elements of games can help us learn in our classrooms or other settings outside of the virtual, video game world.

“Almost all of us grow up learning through playing,” he said.

Just think back on a time when you played a game with friends. Maybe you worked with

as a team. Maybe you used some creativity and imagination to face a challenge or solve a problem.

It appears that there are two elements to video games, in particular, that can really help us learn, Alsawaier said. One of these elements is collaboration. Learning through video games often happens when you are working with others to reach a goal. This can happen in the game or outside the game.

For example, some games like

Minecraft help kids learn to read and write. But the game itself doesn’t actually require you to read or write. The game also doesn’t come with a lot of instructions.

Players read other people’s experiences online and write about their own.

The other element of learning through video games is, well, fun. When playing video games, people use a lot of their senses during the experience; sight to watch the screen, hearing to listen

to their fellow players, and touch when using the controller.

Our senses and experiences are also tied closely to our memory, Alsawaier explains.

Not only can video games give us skills that help us learn, but there’s evidence that they can help us remember what we learn, too.

We still have a lot to learn about different video games and how they affect us, but we can say, at least in part, that the answer to your question is yes.

The easy but ever-vigilant art of espalier Tree Talk

p against the wall: That phrase usually carries a sense of anxiety or exhaustion with it. Not so in the horticultural world. What you see on the next page is an example of espalier. It is a fruiting pear, literally up against a wall — a brick wall.

Anyone who has traveled McGilvra Boulevard a block north of Madison Street and looked to the west has, no doubt, seen a pear against its pristine white background. It is, to this gardener’s eye, the finest example of espalier ever seen, anywhere.

During the stretch of holidays surrounding the winter solstice, it is densely outlined in white lights, one of the iconic symbols of the holiday season in Madison Park. Sparkling in the darkness of winter, it literally stops traffic.

The tree came with the house when Norm and Mary Ives bought the property. The house had been built in 1948. All connections with the original owners have vanished, so any oral history of the plant is lost. Guessing from the girth of its trunk and the heft of its horizontal branches, this

pear is 50 or more years old and has been, quite obviously, meticulously maintained all through its life.

“We loved the aesthetic of the tree against the white brick from the moment we saw it,” Norm said. “It was later, after we moved in, that we realized we are now the stewards of something special.

We could not tell you how many folks stop and take pictures.”

The word “espalier” is French, referring, in the 17th century, to a trellis or form on which a plant is trained to grow in a highly controlled two-dimensional pattern, going up and wide, but not out.

Later the word came to represent the entire horticultural technique and the particular espaliered plant itself.

The system, which can be traced to ancient Rome, is as practical as it is ornamental. In a small garden, any number of woody plants can be trained in this way, bringing the beauty of foliage and flower

but consuming little outdoor living space.

An espaliered fruit tree trained on a south or west facing wall, where it gets an abundance of sunlight, can produce copious amounts of apples, pears, figs or

peaches on limbs that are easy to reach and tend. It takes a minimum of two years to get an espalier going. If the idea appeals to you, this would be a great time to start. Just be certain that you keep the plants deeply watered through

the warm months ahead.

The power of poetry for older brains

pril is National Poetry Month, which gives us a chance to step back, slow down, and appreciate the artistry of language as manifested in a poem. More than just enjoyment, reading, memorizing and reciting poetry is good for older brains, too!

Poetry is a creative enterprise, and creativity is a result of the intertwining of cognitive process.

Art, music and poetry show similar patterns of brain activity.

We’ve known for a while that music offers therapeutic value to individuals suffering from cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Research is showing that poetry has similar effects, increasing connections through various neural networks and enhancing compromised cognitive processing. This strengthens our overall cognitive health.

Research is also demonstrating that the act of writing poems, and also listening, memorizing and

Reading and/or writing poetry has been shown to stimulate the flow of endorphins that can not

only help us feel better emotionally but may also improve our immune system.

We have had several wonderful poets at Bayview over the years, and one, who sadly is no longer with us, shared a lovely poem about the coming of spring, which is framed and hanging in my office where I glance at it daily.

Here are the last two stanzas of the poem: “Sugar maples wake to serve another spring That obliges them to do nature’s bidding.

They respond by sending their sap, tho’ brief Aloft from roots to trunk, to branch, to leave.

“The maple’s sweetness lying deep within its well Rises to challenge the gloom of winter’s spell.”

vast majority of Advantage plans are managed-care policies such as HMOs or PPOs that require you to get your care within a network of doctors.

If you join an Advantage plan, the plan will provide all of your Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) coverage like original Medicare does.

But many plans also offer extra benefits like dental, hearing and vision coverage along with gym/ fitness memberships, and most plans include prescription drug coverage too.

Medicare Advantage plans are also cheaper than if you got original Medicare, plus a separate Part D drug plan and a Medigap policy.

Many Advantage plans have $0 or low monthly premiums and don’t always have a deductible, but they also typically have a high out-of-pocket maximum.

In 2021, Advantage plan participants on average were responsible for a maximum of around $5,100 for in-network care, and about $9,200 when out-of-network care is included.

How to choose To help you pick a plan, a good first step is to call the office managers of the doctors you use and find out which Advantage

plans they accept, and which ones they recommend. Then go to the Medicare Plan Finder tool at Medicare.gov/plan-compare to compare Advantage plans in your area.

This tool provides a five-star rating system that evaluates each plan based on past customer satisfaction and quality of care the plan delivers. When comparing, here are some key points to consider: Total costs: Look at the plan’s entire pricing package, not just the premiums and deductibles.

Compare the maximum out-ofpocket costs plus the copays and coinsurance charged for doctor office visits, hospital stays, visits to specialists, prescription drugs and other medical services. This is important because if you choose an Advantage plan, you’re not allowed to purchase a Medigap policy, which means you’ll be responsible for paying these expenses out of your own pocket.

Drug coverage: Check the plan’s formulary – the list of prescription drugs covered – to be sure all the medications you take are covered without excessive copays or requirements that you try less expensive drugs first.

Residents invited to offer feedback for next Parks District budget cycle The Seattle Parks District is seeking resident input about what projects they would like included in Cycle 2 of the 2023-28 park district budget. Planning for Cycle 2 of the Seattle Park District was delayed twice already because of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impacts.

April 27, 2022 Once you’ve achieved the shape you want, it is a process of removing the shoots, called “suckers,” which emerge along the trunk and horizontal branches.

The pear pictured was once managed by a contracted gardening company.

Now, Norm does the job himself. He doesn’t cultivate this pear for the fruit. So, he does nothing to encourage or preserve emerging pears.

“From October through March, I basically don’t do anything,” he said. “We have a professional lighting company do the Christmas lights. When the pear starts leafing out, I go out monthly and remove the suckers.”

He speaks of the process as if it were meditation. Once established, this is all that espalier really requires. But it involves patience, vigilance and consistency.

Ah ha! Therein lies a life lesson, another one of the many gifts of the garden.

Be patient, vigilant and consistent, and you’ll likely be able to handle being up against a wall beautifully and fruitfully.

ESPALIER, FROM PAGE 4 that as the plant grows and the trunk thickens, it will have the necessary space.

Espalier can take many geometric, or even abstract, shapes.

The tiered, horizontal T shape you see in the picture is a common and relatively easy shape to achieve.

As the plant stretches up the first year, take note of the side branches you want to cultivate and snip the others back to the trunk. You can use twine, wire or hooks in the wall to keep these limbs growing straight out at a 90-degree angle.

When the plant reaches the height you want, cut the vertical growth off just above the top tier of limbs. It may take three or more years to reach the desired height, all the while you’ll be watering and grooming.

Nip back unwanted shoots as they emerge.

Application of a balanced fertilizer or a heavy top dressing of compost will speed healthy growth.
