ing this period, the Golden Horn was uted with industrial waste from the facs, warehouses, and shipy- ards along hores.

s enacted after the Ottoman constitution 876 aimed to expand its structure across ity, but they were not fully implemented 1908, when Istanbul was declared a nce with nine constituent districts.

- During the first part of the Republic of Turkey, Istanbul developed under the masterplan of Henry Prost of 1936. The Golden Horn continued to be the industrial core of the city.

Work Dynamics in Eyüp - From 1950 to 1980, the region was known for its employment-productivity dynamics

New wave of immigration in the 1950s

Construction of the E-5 Highway (1973) 1st Bridge of the Bosphorus (1973) Haliç Bridge (1974) 2nd Bridge of the Bosphorus & Construction of TEM (1988) Destruction and Renovation - Destruction of some old urban districts and agricuture lands for the need of re- novation and new road infrastructures. - Intensification of the construction eased by the laws of 1974 for the developers.

Istanbul Metropolitan (1984) Construction of Formal and Informal Housing areas - Intensification of the construction be- cause of the demand of a new popula- tion and eased by the laws of 1954. - Development of shanty towns in the 1960s.

- Restructuration and expansion of the great municipality of Istanbul. - The rural areas of Kemerburgaz became connected to the Eyüp Munici- pality in order to plan the area and de- polute it.

Laws of Urbanization (1995, 2003) - In order to face the illegal develop ment of the northern part of Eyüp, the municipality fixed it by laws in 1995, legalizing the development of the North. - In 2003, another law on « protected sites » legalized past constructions and had the aim to frame and control this urbanization.

Expressway to the Northwest (2001-) 3rd Bridge of the Bosphorus & 3rd Airport (2013-2017)

The Changing face of Eyüp - Deindustrialisation of the Golden Horn and depolution of the area. - Immigration of more conservative isla mic families.

Development of the Northern part of Eyüp - Arrival of a higher class population in the Northen Part of Eyüp (Gökturk and Kemerburgaz) in the 1990s. - Destruction of a part of the Belgrade Forest for the construction of residential and entertainment areas by the develo per « Kemer Country ».

The territory of Eyüp is now stretching to the North, towards the third airport project, taking with it, a great part of the protected forest of Belgrade and its water ressources. In spite of the explosion of inhabitants, the construction of gated communities and the destruction of its natural landscape, its heritage represents the hidden strength of this developing territory. Our work was to develop an overview of the situation, rather than proposing a static architectural solution. During our visit on site in Istanbul, we have approached the project through dialogue, meetings with the elected locals, inhabitants and architects. We used the mediums of video, photography, sketches. It has allowed us to collect testimonies and capture theessence of the environment. 06

14 15 The owner of a woodshop told us that the water in Eyüp was very polluted during the industrial period. In addition they had to deal with the stench of the garbage treatment in Gökturk. But with the desindustrialization, Eyüp has started to have an healthier environment.

Salih, told us that if he could, he would demolish all the newer buildings and replace them by one or two-storey buildings with a neighborhood relationship. He also said to us that he wouldnʼt like the new residents to be here, the one living in the newer and higher buildings

An artist met in the street explained us that the road where we were used to be a dirt road and also that during her grandmotherʼs time, the road next to the one we were used to be a river. She also told us that Eyüp used to be a modern place before the Anatolians came.

« Our neighbors had gone. » said Gulusam to us. Living in his house since he was born, Gulusam seems to be the last resistant of what can be called a gecekondu. Since some developers arrived, the landscape and the population changed, forcing past inhabitants to be expulsed.

When we visited Senaʼs cousin, we discovered that the only gathering place in the gated community was runned by a private company. Moreover, we met someone else that was deploring the lack of social relations within this typology. The only link made was through the kids.

During our interview with a barman from the kemercountry golfclub, we noticed power cuts that can be explained by the rapid and illegal expansion of the city. Indeed, the lands of the complex were at first the governmentʼs property, part of the Belgrade Forest.

Maksut, the urban planner in chief of Eyüp, told us that he has little power on the urban development; the ministry of housing plan everything, even in risky areas, and he can just give an opinion. According to him, we need to give voice for peopleʼs opinions.

We went to Kemerburgaz, a village in the peri-urbanised area of Eyüp. We noticed strong bonds between the inhabitants of this rural village. Nevertheless, developers are building gated communities all around it while the traditionnal ʻyaliʼ houses are being abandoned.

In our analysis, we realized that the limits of Eyüp were set for administrative reasons, without any common identity. Nevertheless, we discovered that water has been linking its inner districts with its water-supply system since the Byzantine period. In the aftermath of this discovery, our point of view on Eyüp has changed, as water can be seen as an element that structures the territory.

Goktürk

Kemerburgaz

Thus, water has been an entry point in the processus of reflexion of our project. We learnt that the aqueducts used to bring water to gathering spaces such as public baths or fountains. Therefore our strategy is to consider water as a link in the territory of Eyüp. This project can be articulated through different scales of intervention. Our idea is to enhance the heritage of the site by renovating the aqueduct and create an «observatory of the changing landscape». A water trail could be established from the Golden Horn to Gökturk along the river of Kagithane. Finally we thought about the treatment of the run off polluted water with landscaped wetlands.

Facing the very severe continental climate of Astana in Kazakstan, exposed to strong winds

and extreme temperatures, the concept was to use a mixed used public topography. This slab is designed as a structurally independent building. It is composed of shops and public amenities merging from the landscape. The structure is enlightened and ventilated by garden patios. The circular shape of the two plots creates a collective park through the site. The public realm of this structure will become the glue between the various components of the scheme. Therefore the landscaped roof is accessible for both residents and visitors, directly from the patios as well as of from the park. For the dwellings three different typologies of high rise buildings are proposed developing through, double orientated appartements with views accros the park.

10

The idea was to design an environ-

ment, and ecosystem, to establish a diverse range and scale of housings, with a ÂŤlife support systemsÂť, of cafes, sports, cultural facilities and a communal landscapes to promote interaction and social harmony.

Questionning the housings - A garden in Paris

Site : Rue Bichat, Paris Type : Housing and urban project Groupe : Manon Uhlen , Romane Luciani Enseignants : Frédéric Schlachet

Our challenge was to integrate a very urban housing project

in the center of Paris meanwhile creating an intimate courtyard garden. The dwellings are placed on a glass base offering commercial amenities. The transparent base encloses a private garden in the center of the plot. The courtyard composed of dense wild plants draws a path serving the three buildings of the urban project.

from polycarbonate panels allows light in and filters out the noise of the street. The courtyard facade is divided into two volumes by a cut out which brings views and light into the building. This opening encloses a water garden and the central distribution core. The building is composed of 21 apartments, 12 of them being duplexes. They are sharing the double height made of two L shaped module facing each other. This double oriented appartements enjoys double height loggia thanks to this module.

era. The mega-cities are suffering of uncertain limits, sprawling, chaotic, and fragmented urbanisation. The conditions of political decisions, cultural and social life, the ways of living and working are rapidly changing. How should we reconsider the refoundation of urban spaces granted with civic and integrated activities? We studied here the case of Champigny sur Marne located in the outskirts of Paris. Our site was a landlocked wasteland located between a typical suburban residential area and tower blocks. During our investigations we were struck by the bleakness and disparity on site. Therefore we propose to introduce a landscaped « continuum » created by a forest of Pinus Pinea. This layer of trees would connect the two different urban typologies. New connections are added to the existing roads. Forest clearing are introduced with housings, community and commercial facilities creating an attractive urban forest. This proposition is faithful to the bucolic identity of Champigny sur Marne while generating new dynamics binding the heterogenous components of the city. LIGNE SNCF

Snaking Art Gallery

The exercice was to design a new pavilion dedicated to contemporary design and art. It is composed of an art gallery, a boutique for fashion designers, and a bar/café. The structure avoids the linear grid of poplar trees of the Champs Elysee by snaking between them. Interior open gardens are created via this shape. The ribbon like structure uprises opening a path to an interior garden, it also undergoes depressions giving a direct access over the structure to the café bar.

Workshops and other experiences

Reinventing

Paris, was launched by Paris City Hall in november 2015. The contest picked out 23 key sites across the city and invited architects to think up brave, beautiful new uses for areas that were underexploited, unloved, or lackluster. In fact is a new way of selling public lands to the private sector. During my intership at the office of SOLA associated to Riken Yamamoto, we have worked for the site of Ternes Villiers. This project with a very challenging site led to the design of futur bridge building located over the parisian ring road creating a link between Paris and Neuilly. The building embodies the theories of Riken Yamamoto : Local Community Space and his HBU apartments.

We love green is a 2 days of music and parties in the most

beautiful park of Paris with outdoor concerts and a DJ stage hidden in the woods, home-made local food, cinemascope to discover the World, Lab network to meet the change makers, kid area, the bar-restaurant Le Comptoir General outside the walls. Every year a competition is held to create eco-friendly art installations and furnitur for the festival. The picture shows the design we have proposed for solar lamps targeted to be visual landmarks in the festival. This project wasn’t selected at the end but we have participated voluntarily to the workshop of two weeks, building the chosen furniture for the festival. 24
