Quando ho visto i lavori di Michal Martychowiec sono stato immediatamente colpito dalla grande stampa cromogenica in cui una candida mano esce dal buio per offrire a chi osserva una manciata di cristalli. L’opera si intitola What remains the poets provide, un’espressione tratta da una poesia di Friedrich Hölderlin, Andenken (Ricordo), scritta nel 1803 durante un suo soggiorno a Bordeaux.

Avevo sentito parlare di Hölderlin, in particolare della sua vita passata per lungo tempo in una torre, ma del suo lavoro conoscevo gran poco. L’opera di Michal Martychowiec ha generato in me una curiosità autentica nei confronti della fonte letteraria a cui il titolo fa riferimento e la poesia di Hölderlin è stata una vera rivelazione, in particolare l’ultimo verso: “Was bleibet aber, stiften die Dichter” (“Ma il poeta fonda ciò che resta” nella traduzione di Enzo Mandruzzato). Il poeta, con la sua parola, decide ciò che resta dell’infinita complessità di eventi di cui si compone la Storia. Lo stesso fa l’artista, sottraendo piccoli e grandi eventi dallo scorrere incessante del tempo per fissarli in immagini.

Così, in What remains the poets provide Michal Martychowiec, come molti maestri prima di lui, conferma l’identificazione dell’artista – quello vero – con il poeta: entrambi appartengono alle schiere di coloro il cui sentire è più acuto e sottile, a entrambi è affidato il compito di donare ai posteri memoria della Storia ed entrambi lo fanno attraverso il filtro estetizzante dell’arte, trasformando tutto ciò che resta in pura bellezza, in puro lirismo.

When I saw the works of Michal Martychowiec, I was immediately struck by the great chromogenic print in which a pale hand emerges from the darkness to offer the viewer a handful of crystals. The piece is titled What Remains the Poets Provide, an expression taken from a Friedrich Hölderlin’s poem Andenken (Memory), written in 1803 during a stay in Bordeaux.

I had heard of Hölderlin, particularly the fact that he lived in a tower for a long time, but I knew very little about his oeuvre. Michal Martychowiec’s piece sparked an authentic curiosity in me about the literary source to which the title refers, and Hölderlin’s poetry was a true revelation. I was particularly struck by the last verse: “Was bleibet aber, stiften die Dichter” (“But the poet founds what remains”, as translated by Enzo Mandruzzato). With his language, the poet decides what remains of the infinite complexity of events that make up History. The artist does the same, subtracting events large and small from the incessant flow of time and fixing them in images. Thus, in What Remains the Poets Provide, Michal Martychowiec, like many masters before him, confirms the identification of the artist – the true one – with the poet: both belong to the ranks of those whose feelings are subtler and more acute; both are entrusted with the task of bequeathing the memory of History to posterity, and both do it through the aesthetic filter of art, transforming all that remains into pure beauty, pure lyricism.

Michal Martychowiec. Empty Room di Jessica Bianchera

Per il terzo appuntamento espositivo di Spazio Cordis abbiamo scelto un giovane artista di origine polacca, Michal Martychowiec, che attualmente è di base a Berlino e che dimostra una straordinaria versatilità nell’utilizzo di numerosi media (dalla fotografia al video, dall’installazione al disegno, dal neon alla parola come significato e significante) oltre a un’acuta capacità di analisi rispetto alla storia, alla letteratura, alle problematiche socio-politiche contemporanee con un’apertura al contesto internazionale che include sia il “Vecchio continente” (a cui vanno sicuramente ricondotti i riferimenti alla tradizione classica e in particolare ai poemi omerici e ai miti greci, ma anche le riflessioni sulle rivoluzioni in Francia dal 1848 a oggi), sia i Paesi oltreoceano raggiungendo per esempio il Giappone con l’opera The shrine to summon the souls.

La mostra raccoglie una selezione di lavori realizzati dall’artista ragionando sui concetti di violenza, libertà e bellezza in rapporto a cambiamenti storici e sociali nell’ambito della comunicazione e dell’esercizio del potere.

In particolare, Martychowiec propone due nuclei tematici che si intrecciano: il reiterarsi nella storia di episodi di violenza legati ad affermazioni di libertà e le distorsioni nel rapporto con l’altro vissute dall’uomo contemporaneo nell’epoca di Internet e della tecnologia digitale. A questi si sovrappone la riflessione sull’esercizio del potere, non solo nell’accezione di “potere costituito” e manipolazione dell’informazione, ma anche a livello di relazioni personali, sociali, private e comunitarie. A fare da filo conduttore, la memoria e le modalità attraverso le quali l’arte e la poesia diventano strumenti per preservarla unendo il passato più remoto al futuro futuribile.

Il titolo della mostra, Empty Room, la camera vuota, incrocia questi temi singolarmente e in maniera trasversale laddove si configura come luogo fisico in cui le dinamiche percettive sono state alterate, come spazio virtuale in cui si attuano relazioni distorte e come assenza figurata per sottrazione o trasformazione dei significati. L’espressione nasce

in relazione al mondo delle chat room e quindi si lega al tema della comunicazione e dei rapporti interpersonali dopo l’avvento di Internet. Le chat room sono spazi virtuali dove è possibile instaurare una conversazione, scambiarsi idee, avviare dibattiti, ma in cui l’assenza di contatto visivo e di relazione fisica abbatte ogni possibile reticenza, sottrae i soggetti dal confronto con le urgenze, gli imbarazzi, i desideri inespressi. Le dinamiche del potere in un mondo di interazioni a-corporee si modificano e cambiano prendendo strade inaspettate e trasformando la natura stessa dell’uomo contemporaneo. Il confronto con il reale viene meno e così la percezione dei fatti, dei gesti, delle intenzioni. Così se la chat room si presenta come un non luogo, uno spazio in cui domina l’assenza, l’empty room è un’assenza alla seconda: è la sottrazione improvvisa e irreversibile dell’interlocutore, l’interruzione repentina del dialogo, la censura arbitraria su una conversazione. È il silenzio di uno spazio vuoto, la cancellazione di una storia, un atto violento quanto un pugno nello stomaco. Nel mondo digitale si sono sviluppati nuovi e inaspettati modi di esercitare il potere e la violenza: Internet nasce per liberare l’informazione e aprire il mondo a infinite possibilità di scambio e conoscenza, ma si trasforma ben presto in un subdolo strumento di controllo e manipolazione dell’informazione. Tutto iniziò in un giorno di violenza è in questo senso un’opera manifesto: l’opera riproduce una frase tratta da Alessandro Baricco, più precisamente dalla sua riscrittura in chiave contemporanea dell’Iliade. La prima testimonianza della storia della letteratura occidentale non esordisce con un gesto d’amore, ma con un atto di violenza, con l’infuriare della guerra, una guerra significativamente tesa a un riscatto – quello di Elena rapita dai troiani – e condotta in nome della libertà. Lo stesso accade nel caso delle guerre e rivoluzioni contemporanee: violenza e libertà, controllo e potere legano la storia antica al mondo di oggi. Ripercorrendo i cicli e i ricicli della storia, ogni grido di libertà è stato accompagnato da un atto di violenza incontrollata, di cui l’arte e la poesia conservano memoria sottoponendo ogni evento a un filtro estetizzante:

La libertà che guida il popolo di Delacroix ricorda le “Tre Gloriose Giornate” del luglio 1830 con una figura allegorica che calpesta un cumulo di corpi e macerie imbracciando un fucile; delle movimentazioni studentesche del ’68 si ricordano i motti e gli slogan (“Sous les pavés, la plage!” per esempio viene utilizzato da Martychowiec per un intero ciclo di opere); il Mouvement des Gilets Jaunes, già soggetto al filtro della storia pur appartenendo al nostro presente, diventa il protagonista dell’installazione Empty Room, in cui una sedia scagliata a terra insieme a un gilet giallo simboleggia l’irruenza di un atto di rabbia quasi domestico e quotidiano riportandolo contemporaneamente al tema delle barricate.

nel flusso della storia nel momento stesso in cui stanno accadendo, e di essi cosa resta?

What remains the poets provide, ricorda un’altra delle opere in mostra, mentre in The shrine to summon the souls il lento cadere dei petali rosa nel Santuario Yasukuni a Tokyo (dedicato alle anime di soldati e civili che morirono combattendo al servizio dell’Imperatore durante la Seconda guerra mondiale) si accompagna a testi e musiche del film La rabbia di Pasolini: “Del terrificante mondo del passato, e del terrificante mondo del futuro, non resta che la bellezza”.

For the third Spazio Cordis exhibition, we have chosen a young artist of Polish origin, Michal Martychowiec, who is currently based in Berlin. Martychowiec’s work displays an extraordinary versatility in the use of various media (from photography to video, from installation to design, from neon to the word as both signified and signifier). The artist also has an acute analytical capacity with respect to history, literature, and contemporary socio-political issues, with an openness to the international context that stretches from the so-called Old Continent (with references to the classical tradition and, in particular, to the Homeric poems, the Greek myths, and reflections on the revolutions in France from 1848 to the present) to the Far East, for example Japan, with his piece

The Shrine to Summon the Souls.

The exhibition brings together a selection of works in which the artist explores the concepts of violence, freedom and beauty in relation to historical and social changes in the field of communication and the exercise of power.

In particular, Martychowiec proposes two intertwined thematic nuclei: the repetition in history of episodes of violence linked to affirmations of freedom, and the distortions in the relationship with the other experienced by contemporary human beings in the age of the Internet and digital technology. These are overlaid with a reflection on the exercise of power, not only in the sense of “constituted power” and the manipulation of information, but also in terms of personal, social, private and community relations. Acting as a common thread is memory, and the ways in which art and poetry become tools for its preservation by combining the remotest past with the futurist future.

The exhibition title, Empty Room, intersects these themes both individually and transversally, appearing as a physical place in which the dynamics of perception have been altered, as a virtual space in which distorted relationships arise, and as a figurative absence generated by the subtraction or transformation of meanings. The title refers to the world of chat rooms, and is therefore

linked to the theme of communication and interpersonal relationships after the advent of the Internet. Chat rooms are virtual spaces in which people engage in conversation, exchange ideas, initiate debates, but in which the lack of visual contact and physical relationship eliminates all reticence, allowing the subjects to eschew confrontation with urges, embarrassments, unspoken desires. The dynamics of power in a world of a-corporeal interactions change by taking unexpected paths, transforming the very nature of contemporary human beings. The comparison with reality is lacking, as is the perception of actions, gestures, intentions. So if the chat room appears as a non-place, a space in which absence dominates, the empty room is absence squared: the sudden and irreversible subtraction of the interlocutor, the abrupt interruption of dialogue, the arbitrary censoring of a conversation.

It is the silence of an empty space, the erasure of a story, a gesture as violent as a punch in the stomach. In the digital world, new and unexpected ways of exercising power and violence have been developed: the Internet was born to free up information and open the world to endless possibilities of exchange and knowledge, but soon turned into a devious instrument of control and manipulation of information. In this sense, Tutto iniziò in un giorno di violenza is a manifesto: the work reproduces a phrase taken from Alessandro Baricco, and more precisely from his rewriting of the Iliad in a contemporary key. The first testament to the history of Western literature begins not with a gesture of love but with an act of violence: the outbreak of a war, one significantly aimed at a ransom - that of Helen kidnapped by the Trojans - and fought in the name of freedom. The same happens in the case of contemporary wars and revolutions: violence and freedom, control and power link ancient history to today’s world. Retracing the cycles and re-cycles of history, every cry of freedom has been accompanied by an act of uncontrolled violence, of which art and poetry preserve a memory by subjecting each event to an aesthetic filter: Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People recalls the “Three Glorious Days” of July 1830 with an allegorical figure trampling

a pile of bodies and rubble, holding a rifle; of the student movements of ‘68 we recall the mottoes and slogans (“Sous les pavés, la plage!” “Under the pavement lies the beach” for example is used by Martychowiec for an entire series of works); the Yellow Vests Movement, which is already subject to the filter of history even while still belonging to our present, becomes the protagonist of Empty Room: an installation in which a chair being thrown to the ground along with a yellow vest symbolize the impetuosity of an almost domestic and daily act of anger, while at the same time eliciting the theme of the barricades. Ultimately, All is History: great events and small

incidents enter the flow of history at the very moment in which they happen, and what remains of them? What Remains the Poets Provide, recalls another of the works on display; while in The Shrine to Summon the Souls the slow falling of the rose petals in the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo (dedicated to the souls of soldiers and civilians who died fighting in the service of the Emperor during the Second World War) is accompanied by texts and music from Pasolini’s film La Rabbia (Anger): “Of the terrifying world of the past, and of the terrifying world of the future, all that remains is beauty”.

Minotauro La comunicazione digitale offre la possibilità di mantenere relazioni su una scala fino ad ora sconosciuta, sotto una forma che ha alterato l’essenza stessa di ciò che si intende come relazione. Il titolo della mostra, Empty Room, ne è una sorta di allegoria. La stanza nel titolo si riferisce alle “chat room”. L’aggettivo “vuoto” viene dal cambio di nome del contatto in una chat quando si esegue un blocco. La “stanza vuota” è un luogo figurato in cui si può comunicare e scambiarsi idee, un luogo in cui vengono stabilite nuove strutture di potere. In uno spazio reale, però, la comunicazione e lo scontro sono decisamente diversi rispetto alla dimensione virtuale: nel trovarsi vis-à-vis le persone devono fare i conti con desideri, imbarazzi, impulsi, senza contare che la comunicazione non può essere bruscamente interrotta o censurata senza dare all’altro possibilità di replica. Una chat room è in effetti priva di spazio fisico, è essenzialmente un vuoto. Questo vuoto virtuale offre un contesto completamente diverso rispetto alla concretezza di un luogo reale: comunicando attraverso la chat si rimuovono o si limitano tutti quei meccanismi di autocostruzione che in qualche modo ci condizionano.

Diventa più facile dire certe cose, offendere o attaccare l’altro in una chat perché anziché trovarci di fronte a una persona in carne e ossa, ci relazioniamo con un vasto nulla. Quando “comunichiamo” con una macchina, ad esempio l’IA di uno smartphone, le restrizioni in questione non sembrano essere in vigore: la comunicazione con una macchina è una comunicazione tra una persona e un vuoto virtuale. In questo nuovo contesto molte cose diventano possibili, come bloccare il proprio interlocutore eliminando completamente e istantaneamente qualsiasi possibilità di comunicazione ulteriore. Ma sarebbe sciocco credere che il vuoto virtuale sia privo di ordine (e quindi di potere). Il potere è di coloro

che creano e gestiscono questo nuovo spazio: la “terra di nessuno” in cui avviene la conversazione non è affatto di nessuno.

Da questa nuova situazione alterata dalla tecnologia, in cui la comunicazione non sarà mai più la stessa, emerge una nuova tipologia di essere umano. Ha un solo orecchio e due nasi, è un minotauro. L’Empty Room diventa la sua tana: l’antico labirinto si trasforma esso stesso in metafora di questo nuovo essere umano. Nel vuoto virtuale in cui scorrono parole che in altri contesti sarebbero restrittive nasce una nuova coscienza. E in questo contesto sorgono due questioni che dovrebbero preoccuparci: la violenza (legata all’esercizio del potere) e la libertà. Nel mezzo, un uomo solo.

“Tutto iniziò in un giorno di violenza” è la parafrasi di Alessandro Baricco della prima frase dell’Iliade. È intrigante che la prima opera esistente della letteratura occidentale non inizi con la storia d’amore tra Elena e Paride, ma con la violenza della guerra. Tutto ciò che inizia deve derivare da un atto [actio] (nel quale si esercitano la libertà e il potere), un atto può essere sempre contro qualcosa e quindi caratterizzato dalla violenza (come spingere una sedia che poi cade). Ma come può iniziare qualcosa se le parole cadono nel vuoto invece che in uno spazio reale? Se non raggiungono un vero essere umano?

In un certo senso, l’idea della “stanza vuota” quale vuoto virtuale si estende ad abbracciare lo spazio virtuale in generale. Il concetto del virtuale (la realtà) comprende anche i sistemi (ambienti) creati dall’uomo, ad esempio uno spazio artistico, un contesto con un numero limitato di premesse, disponibile per un pubblico ristretto. In un luogo del genere qualsiasi discorso politico funziona in maniera innocua per coloro che detengono il potere. Un esempio potrebbero essere i portali di social networking, in cui comunità con idee simili diffondono opinioni sulle quali esiste un consenso all’interno del gruppo. Nella maggior parte dei casi le dichiarazioni politiche all’interno delle comunità artistiche istituzionalizzate funzionano allo stesso modo: qualsiasi attivismo o gesto politico viene conservato, ma contemporaneamente sottomesso all’interno del contesto.

Così, accade in Empty Room, e in particolare con l’installazione che si compone di una pila di 500 fogli in carta riciclata. Qui, nel vuoto della pagina bianca, campeggia il titolo della mostra, che si trasforma così in una sorta di dichiarazione curatoriale. L’idea è quella che il visitatore raccolga e porti con sé questo

Il progetto Empty Room è stato sviluppato in due istanze separate collocate nel tempo a diversi anni di distanza. Inizialmente, il concept riguardava la comunicazione nell’era di Internet e delle nuove tecnologie, ovvero il nuovo contesto in cui si esercita il potere determinando una base esistenziale dell’essere umano contemporaneo drasticamente mutata. In seguito ho aggiunto un elemento simbolico rivolto a eventi politici recenti. Si potrebbe dire che le due fasi di sviluppo del progetto abbiano tracciato un parallelo della mutevole condizione socio-politica storicamente intesa e dei suoi effetti.

Risulterà evidente allora che l’aggettivo “empty” (vuoto) non descrive tanto la natura dello spazio (l’assenza di oggetti), ma si riferisce piuttosto alle modalità in cui le presenze nello spazio funzionano, a una peculiarità del contesto stesso, ai limiti che un discorso può avere, alle forme di comunicazione che esso può offrire. Ed è così che, in questo spazio nello spazio, in questo contesto minore (rispetto al contesto maggiore del mondo), l’artista esercita la sua libertà di creazione attraverso un linguaggio criptico e il Minotauro contemporaneo cerca la sua umanità.

La r a bbia Spostare le informazioni dal livello fisico a quello virtuale è una cosa, fare il contrario è tutta un’altra storia. In una delle opere del ciclo Empty Room ho riscritto l’Iliade da un ebook utilizzando una macchina da scrivere per dar forma a un lungo flusso di coscienza.

L’informazione virtuale ritorna così tangibile attraverso il processo di riscrittura.

In questo lungo processo l’inchiostro della macchina da scrivere si è esaurito, così come accade ai corpi viventi: la storia diventa illeggibile e le ultime pagine sono praticamente vuote. Ciò che rimane è il ricordo: del testo originale e dell’artista nell’atto di riscriverlo. Tuttavia, la memoria non è vuota: può solo nascere nel vuoto di qualcosa che non c’è più. Quando una persona scompare ciò che rimane non è il vuoto, ma un ricordo.

E la memoria, il ricordo, investe ogni fatto nel flusso ininterrotto dello scorrere del tempo: fatti piccoli e fatti eccezionali, lontani nel tempo o vicini a noi. Così nell’opera installativa in ricordo del Mouvement des Gilets Jaunes, un fatto a noi contemporaneo è presentato come se fosse lontano nel tempo, filtrato dalla dimensione estetizzante dell’arte e consegnato alla memoria. Questo singolo riferimento va letto come parte di una narrazione, di una serie di riferimenti storici che fornisco attraverso questo e altri lavori nell’ambito della mia ricerca. Nel caso per esempio della guerra di Troia (in opere come l’istallazione in carta da pacchi e bomboletta spry o i dattiloscritti) assieme a tutti gli eventi che seguirono, la narrativa politica acquisisce una validità contemporanea: la rivoluzione di luglio in Francia (sedia caduta, “barricata”), la Francia del 1968 (Sous le pavés, la plage!) e il Mouvement des Gilets Jaunes del 2018. La selezione degli eventi on dovrebbe sorprendere: il significato della libertà è cambiato nel corso della rivoluzione industriale, portando prima a una rilettura romantica (il personaggio eroico in lotta per la libertà, che si sacrifica a un’esistenza diventa drammatica) e poi all’eman-

cipazione e alla liberalizzazione delle norme sociali. La rivoluzione fallita del 1968 ha provocato un altro assalto alla libertà con lo sviluppo del programma neoliberale.

La storia della guerra di Troia, quella del 1968 in Francia e gli eventi in Francia cinquant’anni dopo condividono una certa somiglianza: il desiderio di libertà che si esprime in un atto di violenza. Un atto di rabbia e frustrazione, ricco di emozioni, ma privo di un discorso o un programma diventa un parco giochi sotto alle mura di Troia.

Empty Room è una stanza in cui una comunicazione ricca di significato non può più verificarsi, perché il sistema proposto per costituire quello spazio è troppo semplice per veicolare le sue realtà. E così in tutti i casi citati la lotta per la libertà è stata accompagnata da atti di violenza incontrollabile. Del 1968 in Francia rimane solo qualche slogan poetico alla pari di un quadro allegorico di Delacroix per commemorare una rivoluzione durata 18 anni. Forse del 2018 rimarrà soltanto l’immagine di un gilet giallo lasciato cadere a terra insieme a una sedia.

L’idea che dei conflitti del passato sarebbero rimasti solo arte e poesia è stata magistralmente espressa da Pasolini nel suo film La rabbia (1963). In uno dei miei lavori, il video The shrine to summon the souls, riprendo alcuni passi salienti della riflessione di Pasolini sui concetti di libertà, memoria e bellezza in un escalation che culmina in una frase che per il mio lavoro è particolarmente pregna di significato: “del terrificante mondo del passato e del terrificante mondo del futuro, non rimane altro che la bellezza”.

Una cosa è certa: il contesto in cui si trova l’uomo contemporaneo, con i suoi mezzi sofisticati di vigilanza, manipolazione delle informazioni e targeting del pubblico richiederà “atti di violenza” per mantenere integra la nostra libertà. Ma ciò si può ottenere solo al di fuori del “vuoto” sia del discorso che dell’azione (o al di fuori della sicurezza di un’istituzione). Tuttavia rimane un unico problema preoccupante, che Pasolini espresse in La Rabbia:

“Se non si grida evviva la libertà umilmente Non si grida evviva la libertà.

Se non si grida evviva la libertà ridendo Non si grida evviva la libertà.

Se non si grida evviva la libertà con amore Non si grida evviva la libertà.

Voi, figli dei figli gridate con disprezzo, con rabbia, con odio evviva la libertà.

Perciò non gridate evviva la libertà.

Questo sappiate, figli dei figli.

Che gridate evviva la libertà con disprezzo, con rabbia, con odio.”

Minotaur Digital communication offers the possibility of maintaining relationships on a previously unknown scale, in a way that has altered the very essence of what is meant by a relationship. The title Empty Room is a kind of allegory of this idea. The room in the title refers to “chat rooms”. The adjective “empty” comes from the change of a contact name when that contact gets blocked. The “empty room” is a figurative place in which one can communicate and exchange ideas, and in which new power structures are established. In a real-world place, however, communication and conflict are significantly different than in the virtual dimension: when they are face to face, people must deal with desires, embarrassments, urges, in a context in which communication cannot be abruptly stopped or censored without giving the other person a chance to respond. A chat room is in fact devoid of physical space — it is, essentially, a void. This virtual void offers a completely different context with respect to the concrete aspect of a real-world place: by communicating in a chat room, the various self-constructing mechanisms that we are somehow conditioned by, are limited or removed. It is easier to say certain things, offend or attack the other in a chat room because instead of facing a flesh-and-blood person, we are relating to a vast nothingness. When we “communicate” with a machine, for example a smartphone’s AI, the constraints in question are not in effect: communication with a machine is communication between a person and a virtual void. In this new context many things become possible, such as blocking the other person, completely and immediately cutting off any possibility of further contact.

However it would be foolish to assume that the virtual void is empty and deprived of order (and therefore of power). Power is held by those who create and maintain this new space: this “no man’s land” in which the conversation occurs is by no means no man’s.

From this new situation altered by technology, in which communication will never be the same again, a new type of human being arises. He has only one ear and two noses, he is a minotaur. The Empty Room becomes his lair: the ancient labyrinth is itself transformed into a metaphor of this new human being. In the virtual void in which flow words that would otherwise be restrictive, a new consciousness is born. In this context two issues arise, which should be of concern: that of violence (related to the exercise of power) and freedom. Between them is a lone human being.

“Tutto iniziò in un giorno di violenza” (“It all Began on a Day of Violence”) is Alessandro Baricco’s paraphrase of the first sentence of the Iliad. It is intriguing that the first extant work of Western literature does not begin with Helen and Paris’ love story, but with the violence of war.

Everything that begins, must stem from an act [actio] (in which freedom and power are exercised). An act can always be against something and therefore characterised by violence (like pushing a chair which then falls over). But how can anything begin if the words fall into the void instead of into a real space — if they don’t reach a real human being?

In a way, the idea of the “empty room” standing for the virtual void extends to virtual space in general. The concept of virtual (reality) also includes man-made systems (environments), for example an art space: a context with a limited number of premises, available to a limited audience. In such a place, political discourse is harmless to those in power. An example would be social networking portals, in which communities that share similar views spread opinions on which there is a consensus within the group. In most cases, political statements within institutionalised art communities function in the same way: any activism or political gesture is conserved and at the same time subdued within this context.

This is what happens in Empty Room, in particular with the installation composed of a pile of 500 sheets of recycled paper: the title of the exhibition stands out within the empty space of the white page, transformed into a kind of curatorial statement. The idea is for visitors to pick up one of these essential pages, carrying them while they move through the space. It will then become clear that the adjective “empty” describes not so much the nature of the space (the absence of objects), but rather refers to the ways of functioning of the presences within the space, to the peculiarities of the context itself, the limits a discourse can have, to the forms

The Empty Room project was developed in two separate instances, several years apart.

Initially, the concept concerned issues of communication in the age of the Internet and new technologies and the new context in which power is exercised, which drastically changed the existential basis of contemporary humanity. Later, I added a symbolic element pointing to recent political events. One could say the two stages of development of the project have drawn a parallel from a historical perspective of the changing socio-political condition and its effects.

of communication it can offer. And so it is that, in this space within a space — as opposed to the larger context of the world — the artist uses a cryptic language to exercise his freedom of creation, and the contemporary Minotaur searches for his humanity.

La rabbia (Anger) Moving information from the physical to the virtual is one thing, but doing the opposite is quite another. In one of the Empty Room cycle of works, I transcribed the Iliad from an ebook using a typewriter, giving rise to a long stream of consciousness. In this way, virtual information becomes tangible once more through the act of transcribing. During this process the ink in the typewriter runs out, exhausting itself as living bodies do: the story becomes illegible, and the final pages are practically empty. What remains is a memory: of the original text, and of the artist in the act of transcribing it. However, memory is not empty: it can only come to exist within the emptiness of something that is no longer there. When someone disappears what remains is not the void, but a memory.

Memory invests everything that happens within the uninterrupted flow of time: small events and exceptional ones, events that are distant in time or close to us. So the installation in memory of the Mouvement des Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest Movement), a current event is presented as though it were in the distant past, filtered by the aestheticising dimension of art and consigned to memory. This single reference should be read as part of a narrative, of a series of historical references that I provide through this work and others in the course of my research. In the case for example of the Trojan war (in works such as the installation with wrapping paper and spray paint cans, or the typescripts) and all the events that followed, the political narrative takes on a contemporary validity: the July revolution in France (fallen chair, “barricade”), 1968 in France (Sous le pavés, la plage!), and the 2018 Yellow Vest Movement.

The selection of events should not be surprising: the meaning of freedom has changed in the course of the industrial revolution, leading first to a romantic rereading (the romantic character struggles for freedom, sacrificing himself to a dramatic existence) and then to emancipation and the liberalisation of social norms. The failed revolution of 1968 has sparked another attack on freedom, with the development of the neoliberal programme.

The story of the Trojan war, of the events of 1968 in France, and of events 50 years later in France share a certain similarity: the desire for freedom expressed in an act of violence. An act of anger and frustration, laden with emotions but lacking in

discourse or a programme, becomes an amusement park near the walls of Troy.

Empty Room is a room in which meaningful communication can no longer occur, because the system that has been put forward to constitute its space is too simple to contain its realities. And so in all the above-mentioned cases, the struggle for freedom was accompanied by acts of uncontrollable violence. What remains of 1968 in France is a few poetic slogans, just as an allegorical painting by Delacroix is what has been left behind to commemorate a revolution that lasted 18 years. Perhaps what will remain of 2018 is the image of a yellow vest dropped on the ground, beside a fallen chair.

The idea that only art and poetry would remain of past strife was masterfully expressed by Pasolini in his 1963 film La rabbia (Anger).

In my video The Shrine to Summon the Souls I return to some of the main passages of Pasolini’s reflections on the concepts freedom, memory and beauty in an escalation that culminates in a sentence that is particularly meaningful in my body of work: “of the terrifying world of the past and of the terrifying world of the future, nothing but beauty remains”.One thing is certain: the context in which contemporary man finds himself, with its sophisticated means of surveillance, manipulation of information and audience targeting will require “acts of violence” in order to secure the integrity of our freedom. But this can only be achieved outside the “void” of both discourse and action (or outside of the safety of an institution). However one worrisome issue remains, which Pasolini expressed in La rabbia:

“If you don’t cry long live liberty with humility You don’t cry long live liberty.

If you don’t cry long live liberty with laughter You don’t cry long live liberty.

If you don’t cry long live liberty with love You don’t cry long live liberty.

You, the children of children Cry long live liberty With contempt, with rage, with hatred.

Therefore you don’t cry long live liberty.

Hear me, children of children.

You cry long live liberty with contempt, with rage, with hatred.”

Biografia breve Michal Martychowiec (nato nel 1987) crea serie concettuali di fotografie, film, disegni, neon, oggetti, installazioni e ambienti multimediali. È professore invitato alla China Academy of Art di Hangzhou. Vive e lavora a Berlino.

L’opera di Martychowiec consiste nell’uso di vari media per lavori progettati in serie, sviluppati in modo ermeneutico attorno ad un argomento di ampio respiro. Un nuovo campo della sua invenzione consiste nella creazione di avatar e altri personaggi.

Attraverso questa pratica caratterizzata dalla diversità dei supporti, Martychowiec vuole esplorare la condizione e le possibilità dell’esistenza umana contemporanea. Il suo pensiero ruota intorno alla storia, all’invenzione e all’autopoiesi delle narrazioni storiche, e quindi anche all’esplorazione e talvolta alla ricomposizione comica di simboli e archetipi culturali.

Inoltre, Martychowiec unisce le pratiche artistiche e curatoriali attraverso una duplice disposizione della sua opera: sviluppa i suoi progetti come racconti individuali all’interno di un determinato campo investigativo ma allo stesso tempo questi progetti si ispirano a vicenda, e i loro elementi possono essere riorganizzati e incorporati attraverso un’attività curatoriale in opere successive, dove acquisiscono qualità simboliche.

Le invenzioni di Martychowiec si basano principalmente sulla filosofia occidentale e orientale, l’antropologia, l’arte e la storia culturale, riflessioni storiche universali, la storia della religione, la letteratura, l’archeologia e, naturalmente, la nostra cultura contemporanea e l’analisi della comunicazione.

Brief Biography Michal Martychowiec (born in 1987) creates conceptual series of photographs, films, drawings, neons, objects, mixed media installations and environments. He is a visiting lecturer at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. He lives and works in Berlin.

Martychowiec’s oeuvre consists of mixed media practice designed in larger series. It is thus always developed hermeneutically around an expanded topic. A new field of his invention is also recreation of avatars and other personas.

Through this practice, characterised by the diversity of the media used, Martychowiec aims to explore the condition and the possibilities of contemporary human existence. His thinking revolves around history, invention and autopoiesis of historical narratives and thus also exploration and occasionally comical recomposition of cultural symbols and archetypes.

Furthermore, Martychowiec merges artistic and curatorial practices through a twofold arrangement of his oeuvre.

At first, he develops projects as individual narratives within a certain field of inquiry. At the same time, these projects inform one another and their elements can be reenacted and incorporated, through a curatorial activity, into later works, where they acquire symbolic qualities.

Martychowiec’s inventions are based primarily on Occidental and Oriental philosophy, anthropology, art and cultural history, universal historical reflections, the history of religion, literature, archeology and, of course, our contemporary culture and communication analysis.
