It's Health Literacy, Breast Cancer, Down Syndrome, & Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and holds National Child Health Day and World Mental Health Day. October is a time of international observance when hospitals, health centers, literacy programs, libraries, social service agencies, businesses, professional associations, government agencies, consumer alliances, and many other groups can work collaboratively to integrate and expand the mission of health literacy.

International Volunteer Managers Day (IVMDay) was founded and observed for the first time in 1999.The push for IVMDay was led by American Nan Hawthorn who helped form a committee to explore a day recognizing the work of Volunteer Managers. IVMDay was developed in order to bring recognition to individual Managers of Volunteers and their roles in the mobilization and support of the world’s volunteers.

Speaking of amazing volunteer managers, 5 Spark the Change Colorado staff, including 4 Volunteer Managers, attended the Colorado AmeriCorps Seniors Association's (CACSA) first ever State Conference on September 24 in Colorado Springs.

The daylong conference brought AmeriCorps Seniors Managers and Directors from across Colorado to hear Keynote Speaker Robert Haynes, Mountain Region AmeriCorps-Office of Regional Operations and to learn from each other in four different workshops.

NEW! About The Vollee Alliance Pilot Program: The Vollee Alliance is designed for volunteer leaders to have a space to share best practices, brainstorm solutions and support each other in their work. Each team will be facilitated by a Captain, who will promote a safe environment for honest and open dialogue leading to meaningful networking, professional development, and the advocacy of our field. Logistics: The Scholars will have the opportunity to choose meeting topics of interest, share their own experiences, ask questions relevant to their current work situations and glean insights from one another. The Alliance teams can meet virtually or physically and will meet on a regular basis, as determined by the members, called scholars. Alliance teams can be general in focus, can be regional or mission focused (ie., hunger issues, the arts, education). Each team can have between 5-10 scholars.

Definitions: The Vollee Alliance: The program name – a shortening of Volunteer Leaders Elevating Engagement, playing on the concept of a volley, or exchange of ideas.

Team: Multiple teams may exist within the Vollee Alliance. Each team will be made up of 5-10 scholars and will be led by a Captain. Teams can be general, regional or mission focused.

Scholar: Individuals who are part of the Vollee Alliance Teams are called Scholars.

During the pilot process Scholars must be DOVIA CO Members.

Captain: The volunteer who facilitates an individual Team, by organizing the meetings and ensuring a safe and positive space for members is called the Team Captain.

Manager: The volunteer who organizes the Vollee Alliance Teams, trains the Captains, and assigns members.

Volunteer Spotlight: So f ia Webb, MSW, NLC--Mental Heal th Th erapist Sofia supervises 7 MSW interns at two agencies, Girl’s Inc. and Lutheran Family Services. In exchange for her service in the program, Sofia also receives clinical supervision through an experienced LCSW volunteer with the Mental Wellness Program.

This is truly an example of paying it forward— a win-win for students, agencies, candidates, and supervisors!

Sofia Webb, MSW, NLC, is both a volunteer and a beneficiary of our Supervision Program, as an experienced MSW who is on her way to clinical licensure.

Q: Why did you sign up for the Supervisor Program?

A: I signed up for the Supervisor Program to build more connections within the mental health community of Colorado. It has also been an extremely beneficial opportunity to receive my own external supervision in exchange for the supervision I provide.

External supervision can often be expensivethis is a wonderful program for professional development without the cost that often comes with it.

Q: What has your experience been like so far?

Interested in joining the Spark Team?

A: My experience thus far has been very positive. Spark the Change staff are incredibly The Supervisor Program is currently supportive and responsive whenever I have in need of additional skilled questions about programming. I'm receiving clinical supervision from a wonderful LCSW volunteers, particularly MSWs and LCSWs. If interested, contact Kathryn with years of clinical experience in Colorado.

Q: What would you say to others thinking about volunteering as supervisors?

A: To those considering volunteering as supervisors, your service would be invaluable to licensure candidates and students in graduate mental health programs. Many of us need supervision but don't have access to these resources due to limited available supervisors or inability to afford external supervision.

Senior Companion Volunteers Visits The Senior Companion Program engages individuals 55+ years old to realize the independence of older adults in their home and as a team, continue to be vibrant, contributing members of our communities.

Mental Wellness Program- Volunteer Therapist Our Mental Wellness Program matches licensed and insured mental health practitioners (or those seeking licensure under supervision) with low income Coloradoans who lack access to mental health care.

Mental Wellness Program- Volunteer Clinical Supervisor Volunteer Supervisors needed for licensure candidates and graduate interns.
