h t n o M e g a t i r e H c i n Hispa September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month. We celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success.

The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Discover documents, exhibits, films, blog posts and more from the National Archives and Presidential Libraries that highlight Hispanic culture. Thanks to the dedicated volunteers who served on 9/11 weekend, a total of 59,840 meals were packed for Denver area neighbors and families in need. We continue to be amazed by our local community for all the ways they come together to support one another in times of crisis.

NEW! About The Vollee Alliance Pilot Program: The Vollee Alliance is designed for volunteer leaders to have a space to share best practices, brainstorm solutions and support each other in their work. Each team will be facilitated by a Captain, who will promote a safe environment for honest and open dialogue leading to meaningful networking, professional development, and the advocacy of our field. Download the full description.

Logistics: The Scholars will have the opportunity to choose meeting topics of interest, share their own experiences, ask questions relevant to their current work situations and glean insights from one another. The Alliance teams can meet virtually or physically and will meet on a regular basis, as determined by the members, called scholars. Alliance teams can be general in focus, can be regional or mission focused (ie., hunger issues, the arts, education). Each team can have between 5-10 scholars.

Definitions: The Vollee Alliance: The program name – a shortening of Volunteer Leaders Elevating Engagement, playing on the concept of a volley, or exchange of ideas.

Team: Multiple teams may exist within the Vollee Alliance. Each team will be made up of 5-10 scholars and will be led by a Captain. Teams can be general, regional or mission focused.

Scholar: Individuals who are part of the Vollee Alliance Teams are called Scholars.

During the pilot process Scholars must be DOVIA CO Members.

Captain: The volunteer who facilitates an individual Team, by organizing the meetings and ensuring a safe and positive space for members is called the Team Captain.

Manager: The volunteer who organizes the Vollee Alliance Teams, trains the Captains, and assigns members.

New Hire Feature: Mee t Lizette!

Bilingual Project Coord inator Lizette Chavez graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a bachelors in Psychology and Leadership Studies. She is the first in her family to graduate from a University. She is very proud of her Pre-Collegiate Outreach experience, which allowed her to connect with marginalized and first-generation students. She was a peer counselor and spent most of her time providing resources to students and their families. She shares, “It was amazing being able to be a part of a mission that was created to motivate these students to pursue higher education!”

Before joining the Spark team, Lizette worked at CU connecting their Multicultural Living and Learning Communities with their Volunteer Resource Center.

She’s worked on multiple volunteer projects, including: Better Boulder Day of Service, Peanut Butter Luvin, and many animal sanctuary volunteer opportunities. Lizette shares her favorite part about these experiences were the reflection sessions afterwards. She says, “It was really inspiring to hear the amazing experiences and things that my residents learned by volunteering.”

In her free time, Lizette enjoys spending time with her friends and family, going to the mountains, and finding new places to eat! Lizette is bilingual (English and Spanish) and is using her knowledge and talents to become Spark’s first Bilingual Project Coordinator with our Mental Wellness Program. When asked what she is most excited about in her new position, Lizette shares, “I am excited to diversify the Mental Wellness Program in Denver and being able to enhance the continuing education programs!”

Her unique abilities and expertise will be a driving force for good towards our vision of creating stronger, more resilient, equitable, and connected communities. Senior Companion Volunteers Visits The Senior Companion Program engages individuals 55+ years old to realize the independence of older adults in their home and as a team, continue to be vibrant, contributing members of our communities.

Mental Wellness Program- Volunteer Therapist Our Mental Wellness Program matches licensed and insured mental health practitioners (or those seeking licensure under supervision) with low income Coloradoans who lack access to mental health care.

Mental Wellness Program- Volunteer Clinical Supervisor Volunteer Supervisors needed for licensure candidates and graduate interns.
