Top 100
Most Ambitious
Companies
in Ireland 2022
INTRODUCTION
Welcome On behalf of all my colleagues at Spark Crowdfunding I am delighted to announce the Top 100 Most Ambitious Companies in Ireland for 2022. This year’s winners highlight the thriving entrepreneurial environment across the island of Ireland, with sectors including finance, education, technology, consumer, leisure and healthcare all represented. We are especially pleased to see such a large proportion of female founders in this year’s cohort, as well as a disproportionately high number of founders under the age of 30. The future is indeed very bright in their hands. In what has been a really tough period of trading for many entrepreneurs, it has been equally uplifting to see so many companies scale their businesses and increase employment in the current environment. The 100 companies that we recognise here have demonstrated ambitious growth potential and we wish them well for 2022 and beyond. We would like to say a sincere thanks to all of the shortlisted companies that didn’t make the final 100. We were taken aback by the number of entries, which made the process of narrowing it down to the final 100 extremely challenging for the judges. At Spark Crowdfunding, we are proud to play our part in supporting Irish enterprises – we have a large database of investors looking to invest in businesses like yours! Best wishes for a prosperous New Year!
Chris. Chris Burge, CEO - Spark Crowdfunding.

TV SOFTWARE
Company Profile Arama revolutionises live Television by re-imagining a process that hasn’t changed for decades. Our software gives TV professionals AI and Computer Processing super-powers by semiautomating multi-camera TV. We’re starting with soccer by slashing the costs by 85% of what it costs to broadcast games live. Our secret sauce is our patented software. Not only are we slashing TV productions, we’re also slashing carbon footprints by reducing the amount of crew who need to be on-site for live TV transmissions. We’re making Dublin the centre of global TV production as we export our unique system globally.
Company Achievements to Date The Arama idea started with a pain point for live TV based on direct experience. The self-set challenge was how to produce live TV for a fraction of current costs without sacrificing quality. A meeting with Adapt Centre at Trinity College led to an application for Enterprise Ireland Comms funding. The head of Electronic Engineering in Trinity College, Anil Kokoram took the Arama project under his wing and outlined a vision for how it could be achieved. Anil is a legend in the video processing world who has won an Oscar for his work and has sold a company to Google, before going to work with them in Mountain View. This application process required potential customers signed up as trial partners. Both RTÉ Sports and Premier Sports signed up when they heard the Arama proposition and the application was successful. Over €300k in funding was secured in funding from Enterprise Ireland. This funding has enabled the Arama product to be built and engagement has begun with customers beyond our trail partner. Arama will be ready soon and will start transforming our customers’ business models by supplying live coverage of soccer games at a fraction of the previous cost.

Fergal O’Connor fergaljeoconnor fergaloconnor fergal1969
CEO and founder, Fergal O’Connor has helped thousands of SMEs over the last 25 years make minor improvements to their advertising that had a huge impact on their business. Having worked in magazines, newspapers, radio, TV, social and digital media companies O’Connor saw that most businesses were suffering from the same challenges when it came to advertising. There was a lack of proper planning and targeting because the data and insights that are available to bigger brands were not readily available to most small and medium businesses. Data is expensive and the bigger brands want to keep it to themselves. So most businesses are forced to shoot in the dark when it comes to advertising. So the first step was to democratise this data and make it available to all businesses in an attempt to level the playing field and give these businesses a fighting chance.

PARASITE CONTROL
Company Profile Cotter Agritech is a Limerick-based start-up founded in 2019 by brothers Jack and Nick Cotter. They have developed a patented mechanical and software solution that reduces labour, costs and drug resistance associated with conventional parasite control products used in animal production, by enabling a move from blanket treating, to precise application to only the animals that need it. The solution has many benefits, including a significant reduction in antiparasitic drug use of 40-50%, identification of animals with traits of parasite resistance, and reductions in labour. The solution is launching at the Lamma Show in Birmingham, UK on Jan 11-12 2022.
Company Achievements to Date The product was first revealed at Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Arena at the Ploughing Championships in 2019, and won Best Overall Start-up. The company has been bootstrapped to date via the co-founders existing two businesses, with support from the Local Enterprise Office. The brothers say the timing couldn’t be better for this product – Parasite resistance is a sleeping giant just awakenings. For example in some areas of New Zealand, this problem has made farming livestock completely unviable. Recent studies in the EU have consistently detected drug resistance on the vast majority of farms tested, and in June 2022 the EU is banning treating with anti-parasitic drugs without prescription to combat drug resistance, increasing the need for a diagnostic approach. The product has been validated in trials with third level institutions (UCD/QUB) and with 18 commercial sheep farmers across Ireland and the UK. From analysis of this data, the company says in a typical use case it can deliver net savings to a farmer of more than €22,000 over a 10 year period via reducing drug use, protecting drug efficacy, breeding improvements, and labour reduction. The company has earned pre-orders from this testing ahead of full commercial launch in January 2022.

RECYCLING
Company Profile Cigarette butts are the most common item of litter on the planet, and one of the most toxic forms of ocean plastic. FiltraCycle is an Irish startup that collects and recycles cigarette butts into sustainable raw materials using novel technology. Products FiltraPlastic: High-quality cellulose acetate plastic that can be used to manufacture consumer products. Making one pair of sunglasses from FiltraPlastic can save enough water from nicotine and microplastic pollution to fill a swimming pool. FiltraChar: A soil additive that accelerates the growth of trees and acts as a carbon sink. FiltraBin: A cigarette waste recycling bin made from upcycled end-of-life beer kegs.
Company Achievements to Date Our biggest achievement has been the development of our novel cigarette butt recycling process. In 2020-21 we recycled 280,000 cigarette butts into FiltraPlastic in a small industrial pilot of our process. Not including labour, this cost €43,000 euro. The cigarette butts were provided by international litter collection organisations including World Cleanup Day. The FiltraPlastic from our pilot will be used to make a range of sunglasses after our chemical analysis is complete. Ambr Eyewear and CRANN Eyewear have already expressed interest in purchasing FiltraPlastic. We’ve also converted 80,000 cigarette butts into FiltraChar. We were the Industry partner for the SFI research team GREEN CLEAN, which won €20,000. The first paid FiltraBin trial is currently underway with construction company Sisk. We have received a Letter of Intent from the waste management company Future Street to distribute FiltraBins internationally (negotiations ongoing). We’ve raised €55,000 from the EU’s Climate Kic Accelerator, Tangent LaunchBox, and New Frontiers. We plan to construct a commercial prototype facility in Dublin that can recycle 1.6 million cigarette butts per day. We will then design a modular cigarette recycling machine with the same capacity and deploy cigarette recycling facilities across the world.

SPEECH SERVICES
Company Profile KSL are using data and technology to re-imagine how speech and language services are delivered at all stages. Our innovative data sharing platform allows parent to receive therapist led supports for their child at the earliest opportunity and gives healthcare providers with an unprecedented level of data insight to help drive meaningful changes in how they meet demand for services. We’re developing smart assessment technologies to make screening of speech and language skills accessible to all children to ensure no child has to wait for the care they need.
Company Achievements to Date Kids Speech Labs has been working towards meeting the needs of all stakeholders: children, parent, Speech and Language Therapists and the HSE and NHS. We have pilots studies running in several clinics in the UK and Irish healthcare systems developing our evidence base for improvements to existing care pathway. Our early studies with families that have been on the waiting list for, on average, 16 months, had 20% of families remove them selves from the waiting list. So far we have had 200 children screened through our platform and the response from parents has been extremely positive, with most parents saying this approach is ‘badly needed’ and would have been very helpful at the first sign of concern. We have been testing the feasibility of screening children in school and creche settings and have been approached by several providers of early childcare who see this type of screening as critical for young children. Our goal is to deliver a scalable screening platform and this requires automated scoring of speech skills through interactive games and deep learning algorithms. We were shortlisted for the EIC Accelerator in Oct 2021, having barely missed out on selection we have all the pieces in place to reapply in January 2022.

SALES PROSPECTING
Company Profile Motarme helps B2B businesses find and initiate contact with potential customers. We have developed a web-based SaaS system for sales prospecting and sales lead generation for businessto-business companies. We are focused on a new approach called “Account Based Sales” or ABS which generates higher value sales opportunities. We also focused on “Sales Engagement”. We are incorporating Machine Learning technology in our system to further accelerate lead generation. We target B2B software, technology, manufacturing and services firms. Our customers include TEKenable, PEMAC, Principal Logistics, Caresyntax and Stryve.
Company Achievements to Date Motarme has almost doubled revenue in 2021 while still retaining a significant amount of our investment funds for growth next year. We have won new customers like Blackberry, Stryve and Celtrino while expanding our relationship with existing customers like TEKenable, PEMAC and Principal. Importantly we are selling more outside Ireland – Blackberry, Promtek and other customers are based in the UK and will contribute about 10% of revenue this year. We hired new graduates in Q3 who were on-boarded and became productively involved in sales and delivery within just 3 weeks. This demonstrates that we have a repeatable sales model that can be easily scaled up with non-specialist staff. We will be bringing more team members on-board in the New Year. As well as hiring new staff, we redeveloped key functionality in our solution while moving to a new code base. This was potentially a technical risk but has enabled us to introduce new features at much lower cost this year. Our continued focus is on supporting and automating Account Based Sales (ABS) and Sales Engagement. We have increased sales of ABS features and services to clients, helping to increase our average customer value.

Company Profile PEAR-labs is specializing in photonic applications, especially in novel methods to facilitate microscopy beyond the diffraction limit. The current main product is a photonic chip which can be used to provide high resolution imaging beyond the diffraction limit in conjunction with a stateof-the-art light microscope.

SOFTWARE
Company Profile Receipt Relay aims to remove the need for paper receipts in retail and hospitality. It was founded by three engineers who saw the limitations of paper receipts first-hand from working in local shops and hotels, resulting in the question. Can we do better? Given their wealth of experience in the sector, they created the Receipt Relay software which integrates with EPOS systems and allows customers to avail of eReceipts by simply scanning a QR code at the checkout. Coupled with the mobile app, customers can save, sort, and share their eReceipts with the click of a button.
Company Achievements to Date Since its inception in 2019, Receipt Relay has achieved several key milestones. Firstly, in 2019 Receipt Relay won the Fidelity Internationals Fintech for Good Award. Using the prize money, they built an early-stage version of the software and mobile app. Demoing this system won them a partnership with JBM Merit, one of Irelands largest EPOS providers. Continuing development, the team became part of Enterprise Irelands New Frontiers Programme, and progressed to Phase 2. This awarded them with funding and business mentorship. While working in New Frontiers, the team was also invited to Web Summit 2021 as an ALPHA Start-Up, here the system was demoed to investors and potential customers and marked the first time the Receipt Relay was live in operation. Once home from Web Summit, Joe, Sean, and Luke were featured in the Irish Independents 30 Under 30 and featured on the Big Tech Show Podcast. The most recent accomplishment was progression into Enterprise Irelands Competitive Start Fund which awards the team further mentorship and funding to launch Receipt Relay into the Irish market. Encapsulating all of these successes is the fact that Receipt Relay has been developed in-house from day one.
