Top 100

Most Ambitious Companies in Ireland 2023

On behalf of all my colleagues at Spark Crowdfunding I am delighted to present the Top 100 Most Ambitious Companies in Ireland for 2023.

In the face of significant economic headwinds as a result of rising interest rates and epitomised by heavy job losses in the tech sector, it has been really encouraging to see so many entrepreneurs grow their businesses and increase employment over the last 12 months. The 100 companies that we recognise here have demonstrated ambitious growth potential and we wish them well for 2023 and beyond.

This year’s winners highlight the thriving entrepreneurial environment across the island of Ireland, with sectors including med-tech, finance, education, technology, consumer, leisure and healthcare all represented. We are especially pleased to see such a large proportion of female founders in this year’s cohort, as well as a disproportionately high number of founders under the age of 30. The future is indeed very bright in their hands.

We would like to say a sincere thanks to all of the shortlisted companies that didn’t make the final 100.We were taken aback by the number of entries, which made the process of narrowing it down to the final 100 extremely challenging for the judges.

At Spark Crowdfunding, we are proud to play our part in supporting Irish enterprises – our database of 10,000+ investors are looking to invest in businesses like those featured here!

We would like to wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Darren is an effective marketing & communications specialist. Having founded Brando Digital in 2005 he managed a successful exit in 2016. During those incredibly successful years Brando was a Forbes Top 100 Digital Agency in 2010, a Cannes Lion Winner in 2010, and a Best European Sports Sponsorship winner in 2011. Darren has won 32 National & International Marketing Awards and he worries that enjoying work and being good at work is becoming unfashionable.

Company Profile

The AllAboutSunday platform delivers more than micro share affordable race horse ownership/syndication. The race itself is only part of the owner journey. From GPS powered training data dashboards to streamed broadcasts of jockey feedback and pre-race thoughts of elite trainers, this content cannot be accessed anywhere else.

Company Achievements to Date

n AllAboutSunday has already signed up over 4,100 subscriber owners, purchased 6 horses and put them in training with 3 elite trainers: Henry De Bromhead, Gordon Elliott and Donald McCain.

n More than €650,000 has been invested in the technology platform and launch of the service.

n Revenues for 2022 will exceed €350,000 with a very basic marketing spend.

n Most importantly, customer spending behaviour has confirmed the sheer power of an immersive experience as average entry-level spend of €69 has grown to an average of €149 in the first 6 months of content consumption.

n AllAboutSunday is projecting annual revenues of over €2m in year 2. Having confirmed the demand for the service from 4,100 users, AllAboutSunday are raising €300,000 on the Spark Crowdfunding platform to rapidly accelerate the growth rates of the business.

n Over the next 3 years, the company is targeting annual revenues above €15 million, from 75,000 subscribers/customers and have 50 racehorses in training. This will make the company a very attractive target for sports media companies.

CarbonSpace is a satellite-based platform helping food producers to generate carbon claims on land-based operations and reach climate goals across their supply chains. The platform empowers unified, scalable, and cost-effective carbon footprint monitoring with carbon claims applicable to a broad range of ecosystems globally.

CarbonSpace disrupts the status quo via a unique blend of remote sensing and automated ground truth technologies. Unlike other startups, we directly quantify carbon stock changes on the whole ecosystem without using proxies and assumed emission factors. Through a unified tool with automatically validated accuracy, we can track the performances of almost any type of ecosystem, from agriculture to forestry setups, on a monthly and annual basis. Finally, in addition to CO2 data, we can provide CH4 data for large livestock producers.

“When pregnant, I knew wanted to give breastfeeding a go. When my son was born he was tiny, (less than 5 pounds at full term!); weight gain suddenly became very important. The only way to check was week to week weigh in and pre- and post-feed weight checks. Waiting for results was extremely stressful for me and it was immediately clear that pre- and post-feeds weights varied wildly with little accuracy. My husband Jamie and I searched the market but no product existed to tell me how much breast milk my son was getting, I needed immediate and accurate information!

Jamie coincidentally had worked on flow monitoring in another sector; he had an idea of a groundbreaking technology that could be the answer. Rosanne, over many late dinners, listened to us and noticed many other friends with similar issues, she had a vision, saw an opportunity and an idea was born…” Dr Helen Barry, co-founder

The WHO recommends mothers exclusively breastfeed to 6 months however only 13% of mothers in Europe reach this target, similar low rates are mirrored around the globe.

When studied, ‘concern regarding low supply’ is a main reason given by mothers for stopping sooner than they wanted to.

Coroflo have developed the world’s first accurate breastfeeding monitor, Coro.

Coro is a highly accurate microsensor within a standard silicone shield. Coro measures how much milk flows through it and the information can be tracked by mothers using the app on their phone. Mothers can now know exactly how much milk their baby is getting.

Oisín Lennon, CEO and Founder of Danu Sports, is an industrial designer with a passion for sports, healthcare and design. Building on concepts explored while completing his undergraduate Product Design thesis at TUD, Oisín founded Danu Sports to develop a wearable injury and performance analysis system designed to replicate the accuracy of lab-based analysis devices while removing the constraints of such equipment in real-world practice.

Oisín is the sole founder of Danu Sports. Creating the company in 2017, he has worked tirelessly to bring Danu Sports from a concept to a funded, growing start-up with a world class team. Oisín has so far raised over €4.5m of investment from a variety of sources including private investors, the European Space Agency BIC, and Enterprise Ireland. The product is currently undergoing final tests with a number of high-profile sports organisations in advance of its market launch in early 2023.

Company Profile

Injuries are the number one problem in sports, they cost teams success and money. Danu Sports strives to collaborate with the world’s best and most innovative teams to make the leading wearable available to reduce these injuries and even prevent them from ever happening in the first place. Our entire mission at Danu Sports is to do exactly that, remove the restrictive and subjective nature of analysis, and reduce the physical, emotional and monetary costs of injuries in sports. We are doing this by bringing wearable analytics to a ground-breaking new level in sports.

Company Achievements to Date

2022 is concluding with a private equity investment of €3.4m to fund the company’s commercialisation strategy and effectively get the product into the hands (feet) of customers in 2023. These funds also enable Danu Sports to grow its team to 10 full time staff by year end. This adds to the over €1.2m in investment from 2020-2021 through private equity and Enterprise Ireland.

Arguably the greatest company achievement to date, is that after years of work and significant R&D investment developing a complex and technologically advanced product, the company has moved to full production of a commercial product.

In 2022, Danu Sports received recognition by winning the STA Award for Best Technology for Injury Prevention or Rehabilitation, a RedDot Design Award, and an IF Deign Award 2022. They felt that to make a real difference, people and organisations needed to move faster towards decarbonization and take action through small steps and giant leaps, starting with an analysis of their energy bills. From this initial insight, the idea for EnergyElephant was born.

The company is run by Founder and CEO Vincent Mc Cormack alongside Co-Founder and COO Roisin McCormack. The father/daughter duo have hit impressive milestones securing over €5 million in funding, delivering a market ready product and building out a dedicated, talented team as well as an ambitious international sales pipeline.

Vincent, an entrepreneur and project manager with over 30 years experience, is the inventor behind the patented concept that makes the turbines so efficient in average flow speeds. The leader and visionary behind GKinetic, Vincent mainly focuses on high-level strategy as well as the technical and R&D work.

Company Profile

GKinetic wishes to become the go-to supplier of distributed hydro solutions that can unlock clean energy from free flowing water just about anywhere and within a matter of hours.

80% of the market for distributed-scale hydrokinetic energy generation remains untapped, representing a €3.9 billion market opportunity. GKinetic’s target of 0.6GW installed capacity by 2030 would displace 4 million tonnes of carbon and 75,000 tonnes of NoX per annum serving as a clean, sustainable alternative to the current stop-gap solution: diesel generators.

Innovative renewable solutions in the distributed energy space are essential to meet targets for carbon reduction and to help Europe reach its Green Deal targets.

Hugh Sheehy

Originally an offshore oil engineer, Sheehy had already done a lot of globetrotting before he did an MBA at INSEAD in France. After the MBA he lived in Spain, continuing to work all over the world – though now on telecom and internet projects. He moved back to Ireland to join Google in Dublin. After Google he migrated back to the energy business, but into electricity this time. University College Dublin approached him and Go Eve with the DockChain technology in 2021 and he’s been 100% on that since. Sheehy speaks English, Dutch, French and Spanish – and a variety of computer languages.

In his rare spare time he sails and kitesurfs.

John Goodbody

John has spent 20 years in automotive marketing at vehicle manufacturers and at fleet operators like Avis and Zipcar. He brings huge experience and understanding of the commercial and operational aspects of owning and running a large fleet under tight financial pressure and is one heck of a marketing guy!

Company Profile

Go Eve is a spinout of UCD and Imperial College London. We are bringing the DockChain EV Charging innovation to the global market. DockChain is a ‘chargepoint multiplier’. The innovation allows multiple parking spaces to be ‘electrified’ from one base power source with a daisy chain of inexpensive and simple charging points.

Combined with a standard high power DC Charger, our technology significantly reduces the cost involved with charging large numbers of EVs. Plus you can charge any car at high power in any space without moving vehicles around chargers. Rapid vehicle turnaround whenever you need it. This is revolutionary for fleets, hotels, apartments, and many more.

Big changes can often start with a small idea.

From conversations with our founder, Tom Cotter, we like to think this journey to reclaim our oceans dates way back to his childhood when his family would take an annual holiday to the Greek island of Lefkada. His experience there would inform his formative years – becoming an avid sportsman, a budding environmentalist, and water sports obsessive.

Tom spent the next two years researching sustainable production methods that would actively contribute to the reduction of plastic pollution in our seas. Wearing every hat he could, he immersed himself in the meandering complexities of the fashion industry, from sustainable production methods to supply chains. The resulting, colorfully designed rash vest made from recycled polyester was a success, but its journey to fruition showed Tom that this alone would not be enough to make lasting change.

Working together to help alleviate our world’s climate challenge & thus, OceanR was on its way to where it is today. Supporting companies around the world to achieve their sustainability objectives, we continue to challenge the ordinary, together.

Company Profile

We are a diverse group of highly skilled people who have come together from all over the world to help make a positive change to our oceans & planet. Through our sustainable products and services, we hope to inspire and enable others to live more Eco-conscious lives.

At OceanR we’re on a mission: to reclaim our oceans by removing as much of this plastic as we can and recycling it into something new: eye-catching, boldly designed clothing and product ranges for businesses and consumers. Our ranges are custom-designed in-house using Ecofriendly materials and plastic-free packaging.

OceanR supports companies around the world to achieve their sustainability objectives –from reducing their carbon footprint and encouraging responsible consumption practices to sustainable innovation with new products and services. We achieve this by designing custom apparel and product ranges for organizations that live active lives on or near the water – with small-volume production, using sustainable materials such as recycled polyester from reclaimed ocean waste, ethically produced organic cotton, and a closed-loop supply chain. Together, we are reclaiming our oceans for a better future.

OceanR also supports social & environmental partnerships around the world, such as Enaleia, which supports fishermen in the Mediterranean to fish for plastic in the fishing down season, thus for every product you purchase with us, you remove one Kilo of plastic from the Ocean.

OceanR also works with Batu-Batu in Asia, to aid them in their protection of marine life. As we grow, we are developing new, ambitious goals for the future and will expand our action plan for climate change, and marine life protection & continually helping world-renowned resorts, super-yachts & consumers achieve their sustainability goals.

Positive Carbon enables food businesses to reach net zero. Using LiDAR and Artificial Intelligence (AI) we enable real-time, actionable insights to reduce the environmental and economic impact of food waste. Our food waste sensors track and analyse commercial kitchen’s food waste, showing them exactly what food they’re wasting and how to reduce it. With our technology, kitchens can develop practical waste management strategies, plan lower-carbon meals and eliminate the carbon produced by unavoidable waste. As kitchens are extremely busy environments, we have ensured that our technology is autonomous, seamlessly integrates into the kitchen and requires no staff interaction.

Company Achievements to Date

To date we have already proven that our technology can alleviate the impact of food waste on the environment and economy as we found that early adopters of our technology foresee 600% return on investment and cut food costs in the hospitality industry by up to 8%. This translates to €80,000 in a kitchen with €1M in annual food purchases. Additionally, our clients have seen up to 42% waste-reduction, with the remainder of ‘unavoidable waste’ being removed using our carbon removal platforms. This has resulted in 350 tonnes of CO2 prevented and 483 tonnes of CO2 removed per site.

We are working with some of the largest enterprises in the world such as Twitter, KPMG and Airbnb in Dublin and in the supermarket chain, Esselunga, in Milan. We are also in operation in some of the most renowned hotel groups and catering companies, The Hayfield Collection, Gather&Gather and KSG. We aim to include the three largest catering companies in our portfolio; Sodexo, Compass and Aramark who collectively feed 300 million people daily. Decarbonising these three businesses would prevent 2.4mT of CO2 per day from entering the atmosphere, this would see 1% of daily greenhouse gases eliminated.

We have it set up to also give calorie information so that when that requirement also becomes law there will be no additional admin or cost on businesses using Prepsheets.

As our business grew our internal product had become cumbersome with Tara being the only person in the team who could use it and so we had stopped using it to it’s fullest capabilities. Company Achievements to Date

As more and more, pharmaceutical & Biotech companies choose to outsource their manufacturing projects - companies must evaluate the performance of its contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) and determine whether it meets industry and regulatory standards. ServBlock can increase a manufacturers profitability by reducing the current inefficiencies in the system by eliminating the double and triple checking of data that can often occur. Our mission is to bring Amazon-level AI to any online retailer large or small. Shopbox is an awardwinning AI-powered adaptive shopping experience platform. It transforms a generic online store into one that learns about each visitor. From their very first click, it constantly adapts in real-time throughout their entire shopping journey. By presenting infinite permutations based on their interests and behaviour it provides a uniquely tailored shopping experience. A better experience leads to happier shoppers and higher-order value.

Company Achievements to Date

The Shopbox AI journey began at the very start of the Covid-19 lockdown. Despite that uncertainty, in a little over two years it has grown as online retail made a step change in shopper adoption and sales.

Within two months of the company’s incorporation the first contract was signed. The Irish customer base continued to grow and in early 2021 the first UK retailer came on board. Later that year, Shopbox expanded into continental Europe and just 16 months after incorporation, Shopbox was running on schuh’s ecommerce store, supporting a €150M+ business. In 2022, customer numbers have doubled, with continued expansion in Ireland, The UK and Europe.

Building a product that provides a great experience for online shoppers while delivering results for retailers is our driving force. This started by creating something new in an AI powered curated shop assistant in mid-2020. By January 2021 the product was updated to be a mobile-first UI. Continuous product development has followed including the introduction of product carousels, a curated homepage grid as well as optimisation of onboarding from weeks to hours.

These efforts were recognised by winning eCommerce Software Tool of the Year 2022 in September and nominations for 2 AI Awards.

xWave Technologies is on a mission to save lives by ensuring that patients get the best test first. xWave have developed xRefer, a cloud-based clinical decision support system, to support referrers to order the best test first for their patients and to support radiology teams in vetting referrals more efficiently. xRefer has been developed in partnership with both the European Society of Radiology (iGuide) and the Royal College of Radiologists (iRefer) to enable referrers to access evidence-based guidelines in order to provide the best test for their patient at the point of care.

Company Achievements to Date

We went live in Ireland over 18 months ago and the impact we have seen to date has been incredible. On one hand, we have reduced the average time it takes to create and have a referral vetted by a radiologist from 7.5 working days to an average of just 15 minutes. This means that patients are getting scheduled a week-and-a-half in advance on average.

More importantly, a recent audit has shown that use of xRefer has reduced duplicate and unnecessary head and neck cancer referrals by more than 60%, resulting in an overall reduction of referral volumes of 8.2%. This might not seem like much, but it indicates a saving of €57m per annum to the Irish healthcare system and would free up enough capacity to eliminate the Irish radiology waiting list in 12 months. Based on this success, the Health Services Executive in Ireland is now supporting the roll-out of xRefer to GPs across Ireland and we have just announced our first UK partnership with the East Midlands Radiology Network and GE Healthcare.
