James Power & Kevin O’Flaherty

James Power
Both James and Kevin met in the University of Limerick while studying Engineering. James the CEO is owner of his family farm in Waterford and Kevin the CTO has a degree in programming. They worked professionally for several years in the aircraft leasing sector. During this time they both managed global teams and grew revenues in a multinational fast paced environment. They came across this opportunity while James was studying for his Advanced Certificate in Agriculture in Kildalton College. They noted that the market was highly educated to the problem but fatalities have remained stagnant for years. The challenge it was noted was that no two farms were the same and the environment was ever changing. Creating a solution that integrated into a farmers busy life whilst remaining unobtrusive was key in the design process. Remaining focused on the data driven problem has been key to the success to date.

Company Profile Cilter is an early stage startup developing the World’s first embedded software for smartphones capable of detecting and blocking harmful messages, even encrypted messages and crucially, will notify parents if their child is under threat from themselves or others. Involving children in their own online protection, Cilter will reduce familial conflict around smartphone use, give parents the opportunity to intervene early if their child is being harmed and reduce mental health impacts of smartphone use on children. All incoming and outgoing messaging and browser searches that we intercept at the kernel-level of the OS, are compared against our AI-driven databases for threats and anything that fails the test is blocked from the screen, saved in a locked file on the device and the parent is alerted. We are developing our own bespoke multi-modal databases of harmful content across the three domains of concern-cyberbullying, grooming and suicide/selfharm. Using natural language processing for text and computer vision to derive harmful content in images and video, we will go to market with human-level detection efficiency.
Company Achievements to Date Cilter was awarded Best Application of AI for Social Good and the award for AI Woman of the Year at the AI Awards in Nov 23. Cilter was also shortlisted for the KPMG Global Tech Innovator awards 2023 and Best Emerging Technology Company of the year at the Ibec Technology Ireland Awards. In 2022 Cilter was awarded the highly competitive Disruptive Technology Innovation Fund, which is a €2,8M non-dilutive grant. European evaluators concurred that Cilter has the power to disrupt the global parental controls market and that it’s uniqueness demonstrated true innovation. In 2023 Cilter raised a record-breaking seed raise of €1.67M all from angel investors to co-fund the grant in arguably the most hostile fund-raising environment in recent history.

AI ANALYSIS
Company Profile There are Million’s of live sporting events happening around the world every day and attending in person for passionate fans is not always an option (too far to travel, time not suitable, accessibility, conflicts with personal life or work). However, tuning in on-line, whether live or delayed, is a more viable option for many. Clubber solve this problem by using our ‘self-serve’ platform ‘ that utilises over the internet’ technologies to dramatically reduce costs by 90% and enables us to do 1 key thing: Our platform enables unlimited scale due to our decentralised approach whereas traditional models require more ‘physical studios’ as you scale. What does that mean: Essentially Traditional models monitor & add graphics to each game centrally. Therefore, as you scale you must add more personnel. At Clubber we decentralise by empowering our videography team with a simple app that controls everything. Clubber also uses AI to break down key events from it’s live sports into short clips that coaches / players can use to analyse the games.
Company Achievements to Date From product perspective we’ve been testing in the GAA market in Ireland since 2021, since then we have delivered over 1,000 live sporting events. We have generated more than €1m in revenue for 2023 YTD and have and have 80k signed up users [we launched subs in April and have already over 3k annual subscribers]. We have already secured multi year deals with a number of GAA governing bodies in Ireland which gives us a stable revenue source in Ireland for the next 3 years.

Company Profile Parasites are public enemy no.1 of sheep farmers as they cause significant production losses. Monthly treatment of all lambs has been common practice for ~70 years to combat these parasites. This practice has led to resistance developing to parasite medication on most sheep farms globally. Cotter Agritech’s SmartWormTM app eliminates overuse of these drugs by providing individualised, real-time predictions on the need for parasite treatment. Trials conducted in Ireland, the UK and New Zealand have shown: n >95% prediction accuracy n 40-50% reductions in drug use vs. blanket treatment without compromising productivity or welfare n average savings of €1.77/lamb
Company Achievements to Date n Completed trials in ‘21/’22/’23 in University College Dublin, Queens University Belfast and with Beef+LambNZ which successfully validated the technology. n More than 100 farmers using the technology in Ireland and the UK, and international customers secured in New Zealand, Australia and Canada. n Integration secured with all major livestock hardware manufacturers. Specifically, this concerns companies who manufacture animal weighing and sorting equipment, auto medicating guns which calibrate the dose based on the animals weight and animal identification technology. Examples include TruTest, Agrident, Gallagher, Shearwell, Prattley, Te Pari, TrueNorth Technologies and Automed. n Working with an international partner to bring facial recognition technology to Ireland, the UK, Australia and New Zealand sheep farmers. This will deliver benefits including low cost individual animal identification vs. the current RFID ear tag technology, and automatic detection of diseases like lameness and external parasite infection.

RETAIL SAAS
Company Profile When it comes to purchasing online footwear sizing and fitting, we have a user journey that is broken. Today, there is no way for the busy parent to reliably purchase footwear online in this $70bn children’s footwear market as they cannot size and do not trust the fit. From the brand and retailer’s perspective they can’t provide sizing and fitting excellence online. Consumers are anonymous. Conversions are low, and returns are exceedingly high, between 20-40% depending on the channel, compared to 1-2% in store. This isn’t sustainable for the brand or retailer, and for the industry as a whole. SizeWise is a patent pending SaaS platform from University College Dublin that uses the latest Computer Vision and Machine learning technologies to transform sizing and fitting for footwear. It allows consumers to comfortably size using their mobile phone, reducing returns, increasing conversions and providing the retailer and brand with valuable data insights that can support customer engagement, stock optimisation and other commercial initiatives. SizeWise is on a journey of transforming healthy, sustainable online footwear and fitting.

Company Profile Viridian has developed an environmentally friendly process to recover base and precious metals from oxidised mine waste. Viridian’s flagship project is the 100% owned Tynagh Property in County Galway where drilling has defined 6.7 million tonnes of high grade mine waste with an in situ value of over $1 billion. There is scope for a further 3mt of additional waste material at the site which could extend the life of the project. Viridian’s operation at Tynagh will save up to 450,000 tonnes of CO2 and will enable the Tynagh site to be rehabilitated to modern standards. Viridian’s technology can be applied to other waste materials and the company is securing a strong growth pipeline in this regard.
Company Achievements to Date Viridian initially compiled the operating records from the Tynagh mine, which suggested that there may have been a problem with regard to recoveries from the secondary orebody. It then drilled four holes to confirm the amount of metal remaining in the material and carried out initial metallurgical test work to determine if the metals could be recovered. Following positive results, Viridian carried out a drilling programme across the surface waste material in order to measure a 43101 compliant resource. This defined 6.7 million tonnes of high grade waste material, including 4.0 million tonnes of highly oxidised material grading 6% Zinc + Lead, 1.5oz of Silver and 28% Barytes per tonne. Thereafter, Viridian worked with the best mineral processing engineers in the world to develop and perfect a process to recover the metals from the waste and to turn them into viable products. Importantly, this process is environmentally friendly and operates at room temperature and pressure. Viridian will save up to 450,000 tonnes of CO2 by producing metals from waste material and avoiding mining, crushing, milling, and, potentially, smelting. Viridian has developed an exciting growth pipeline where its process technology can be applied.
