21/22 Season Annual Report

Dear Friends,

The 21/22 Season was one of renewal, transformation, and growth.

This year, we returned to live performances and in-person arts education and community programs across our city thanks to the leadership of our extraordinary Board of Directors, the perseverance of our staff, and the generosity of our audiences and countless supporters.

Just as notable as our return to live programs, our organization adopted a new name and brand at the record-breaking 2022 Kaleidoscope Ball.

And as you’ll see in this report, we launched several new and expanded initiatives in the 21/22 Season that expand and deepen our impact in the community.

The connections between our artists, audiences, and communities lie at the heart of our work. We want you to know how much we appreciate our connection with you and your involvement in this historic organization over the past year. Thank you for your continued support in the face of ongoing challenges, for your presence in the theater, and for your love of the arts.

We believe participation in the arts has never been more important to our community. I hope you enjoy reviewing Performing Arts Houston’s 21/22 Season’s successes as much as I do, and we hope you’ll continue with us on our journey to provide the most diverse and relevant performing arts experiences in Houston.

Looking forward,

21/22

A New Name and look

After 55 years, Society for the Performing Arts changed its name to Performing Arts Houston

Our new name and look is perhaps the most visible initiative spurred by our 2020 Strategic Plan. We believe the Performing Arts Houston name captures the depth of what we do and celebrates our connection to the communities we serve. On April 12, 2022, we dropped the word “Society” from our name,

21/22 Season Programming

helping us welcome everyone to the performing arts, as we strive to make our programs, and the performing arts at large, open and accessible to all.

We’re proud to continue our important work as Performing Arts Houston. You might even notice a nod to our past in the negative space of our new logo...

Membership Launch

Along with the launch of the 22/23 Season, we unveiled our new Membership program, expanding the benefits of supporting Performing Arts Houston and our critical work in the community. Our inaugural 22/23 Season members enjoy a range of perks, like priority access, discounts, donor-only events, and more, all starting at just $25.

Renewed Connections

After 569 days without a live performance, we finally returned to the stage with our presentation of Venezuelan superstar Nella at Miller Outdoor Theatre on October 1, 2021.

While we continued to face protocol changes and challenges throughout the season, we remained dedicated to connecting our audiences with exceptional artists.

Kaleidoscope Ball

On Saturday, April 2, we celebrated in style at the 2022 Kaleidoscope Ball as we honored longtime supporters Phoebe and Bobby Tudor at the Wortham Center in Downtown Houston. Kristina and Paul Somerville served as Chairs for the Ball.

In addition to a kaleidoscope of live performances, attendees also got a sneak peek at our new name, look, and the upcoming season. The event, the organization’s last under the SPA brand, raised nearly $600,000 in support of our presentations and education and community engagement programs.

INAUGURAL Houston Artist Commissioning Project

The new Houston Artist Commissioning Project culminated in the world premiere of six new works by Houston artists at Jones Hall in the fall of 2021. We looked for ways to give local artists support and a stage for their creative voices.

We’re grateful for the extraordinary Houston artists who created new work in this inaugural year: Say Girl Say with Two Star Symphony and INPUT/OUTPUT: Becoming Patrick “PJ” Davis: Black, Blue, All Lives; Oh My! Loop 38 and Houston Contemporary Dance Company: Body and Spirit (Corpórea Y Espíritu)

Riyaaz Qawwali: Sant Kabir’s Poems in Qawwali Harrison Guy and Urban Souls Dance Company: Colored Carnegie Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton: The World’s Intermission

“In Houston, we are highly diverse, but every day we are seeking to be inclusive, and we are doing it right here, on the stage in Jones Hall. What an incredible evening.”

– Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner

Expanded Impact: The Collaborative Arts Project

In addition to returning to the theater, we also returned to the community for in-person arts education programs in the 21/22 Season. The Collaborative Arts Project, an inschool creative writing and arts residency, doubled in size this season to bring teaching artists into six classrooms in Houston ISD and Aldine ISD. We’re excited to continue that expansion in the 22/23 Season.

“What I learned during the CAP sessions is to talk more, and to be creative. I learned that art is really fun and calming because you can express your feelings.” — CAP Student
