HOUSTON CREATES

Over the past year, we’ve collected stories and photos of some of the city’s most devoted arts advocates and friends of Performing Arts Houston. Here are real conversations with arts educator and non-profit leader Charity Carter, and 21/22 New/Now artist Sonny Mehta.

Fort Bend Academy of Arts and Dance and Edison Arts Foundation

“I'm a product of an arts education. It gave me empowerment. It gave me love. It gave me confidence. Only art can do that. It gives us a passion early on. It gives us an outlet.

So, yeah, arts education is fundamental without question and should be included in every aspect of our ecosystem.

Performing Arts Houston opened the door to the very things that I dreamt about for my students. And when I look at the dance companies Performing Arts Houston is bringing to town, I see dancers that our children at Fort Bend Academy of Arts and Dance and Edison Arts Foundation can look up to and identify with.

It was a dream for my students to take class from Dance Theatre of Harlem, or Alvin Ailey dancers. But, of course, I couldn't afford to bring those companies here on my own. So, working with Performing Arts Houston made the impossible possible. We don't even know the lasting effect it's going to have on those students.

But I promise you, we have made a difference in those young girls’ lives and changed the trajectory of their paths in performing arts. They’re being shown that the arts do have value, and that it’s a valid career path for them.

So you guys have really opened the door, and you've made the impossible possible.

You've made opportunities for a small nonprofit like Edison Arts Foundation to think bigger, and I am eternally grateful.”

It’s the memory of the world being capable of living with other faiths and languages blending together.

“I grew up in South Asia, and in our home, music and poetry were very important. I remember my grandfather reciting poetry to us (grandkids) that we could not understand, because it was a poetic Urdu, but the cadence of that poetry is what stuck with me. And you can hear that in my artwork even today.

Growing up, music was just everywhere. Celebrations had music; prayer and spirituality had music; the weekends had music. Music was the thing to do, to uplift, bring people together, and enjoy. So, it was quite natural for me to start exploring music deeply, and eventually professionally.

There was a bomb that exploded where I lived in South Asia. I think all my art is a reflection of the idyllic version of the world before that catastrophe. It’s the memory of the world being capable of loving other faiths, and languages celebrating each other.

So my work today is reaching out for this, like, ideal world where we can get along, and in the process, get to know each other deeply. Not in a way that’s only surface level, but in a way that really recognizes our similarities as well as our differences, and the hurt that we've caused each other. I think all those aspects are very important.”

PERFORMING ARTS

HOUSTON CATERS TO HOUSTON ART LOVERS

At Performing Arts Houston, we believe arts and education go hand in hand, kinda like cultural chips and queso—a duo that always hits.

(Maybe it’s just because it’s lunch time, but this food analogy seems to be working really well—let’s keep it on simmer!)

The arts connect cultures and people from around the world and, like a big buffet, there’s something for everyone and an opportunity to try new things. It’s our mission to make sure everyone can build their own plate with the ingredients to satisfy even their most adventurous arts cravings.

Our Education & Community Engagement team works tirelessly to create exceptional learning experiences for our city, many featuring the amazing artists you see on stage. They’re the head chefs in the kitchen, whipping up unforgettable experiences. Since just last August, we've served up over 67 workshops, masterclasses, creative chats, community performances, and more —all designed to make the arts feel personal, appetizing, and within reach for Houston students and community members.

LET’S DIG INTO THE DELICIOUS DETAILS

MASTERCLASSES.........

Getting in the classroom with artists is the meat and potatoes of what we do. This season we teamed up with artists to bring 15 Masterclasses to schools, studios, community centers, and senior living facilities. Some of the many highlights include breath art and beatboxing with Shodekeh Talifero, modern dance with Twyla Tharp Dance’s Reed Tankersly, vernacular jazz with Caleb Teicher, and songwriting for LGBTQ+ youth with New/Now winner Ben Chavez.

CONVERSATIONS ON DANCE.........

Hosted by former Miami City Ballet dancers Rebecca King Ferraro and Michael Sean Breeden, the Conversations on Dance podcast releases regular interviews with the dance world’s brightest stars. Recent episodes feature 24/25 Season artists Caleb Teicher, YUNGCHRIS, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet cofounders Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. These episodes are a great way to whet your appetite for incredible dance performances – like an amusebouche in audio form! Listen along at conversationsondancepod.com.

INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCES!!!

H-E-B PERFORMANCE PRELUDES.........

We love serving local artists the spotlight they deserve. H-E-B Performance Preludes bring the stage into the lobbies of our historic theaters, giving attendees more arts for their buck, (or, more dip for their chip). These bite-sized performances showcase dozens of students and professional groups from around our city, like HSPVA Jazz, Pershing Middle School Dance Company, Meyerland Dance, Bayou City Ballet Youth Company, and Houston artists Alli Villines and Vaijayanthi Raghavant (just to name a few).

AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS.........

We want to give a huge thank you to longtime Board Member Mari Salazar for making dreams come true. The Salazar Arts Internship Program has helped further the careers of 15 interns since 2023, offering paid, immersive opportunities in the arts. Talk about a hearty helping of hands-on experience. (In fact, this very article was written by one of those interns!!)

STUDENT MATINEE.........

Our Student Matinee performance of Piano Battle drew nearly 700 students from 11+ schools and homeschool groups to Jones Hall. It was loud, it was wild, it was a musical food fight, and it was absolutely unforgettable. Who says classical music can’t be a riot?

OPEN REHEARSALS.........

Any performer knows the magic doesn’t just happen during the show – countless hours of hard work and dedication make up the secret sauce that brings performances to life. A number of schools got a taste of the process with VIP access to Open Rehearsals with artists from around the world—Aba Diop Trio from Senegal, Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández, and Japan’s Kodō. Up close, personal, and sooo fun. Where else do you see variety like this???

FLAVORFUL TALKS WITH WORLD RENOWN ARTISTS AND PERFOMERS

Maybe you’re saying— that’s all cool, but I need some sweet treats to wrap up this food analogy . Ok, fine! Creative Chats give audiences the chance to connect deeper with the artist and their work during a post show Q&A. We loved getting the inside scoop (get it, like ice cream?) from Complexions, Sō Percussion with Shodekeh Talifero, and our New/Now artists.

For 27 years, our Student Art Contest has encouraged young artists to unleash their creativity. Inspired by boundarypushing performances like Scott Silven’s At The Illusionist’s Table and Conrad Tao & Caleb Teicher’s Counterpoint, this year’s theme—OUT OF THE BOX—brought in 527 jawdropping, delectable submissions. We celebrated the winners in May at the Post— congrats to all!

RETURN OF A DOWNTOWN TRADITION

Now for the cherry on top. This spring, we welcomed the revival of the Theater District Open House. Over 18,000 arts lovers (OMG) enjoyed free performances, workshops, and family fun. This smörgåsbord of a day featured some of our favorite local artists; muralist (and past Student Art Contest winner) David Maldonado led a vibrant community mural, H-E-B Prelude artists lit up the Wortham Center, Group Acorde performed alongside the Houston Symphony, and YUNGCHRIS got everyone moving with a hip-hop workshop. Houston, we have great arts for everyone. Save the date! Theater District Open House returns March 9, 2026!

I know that’s a lot to chew on but the year's not over yet! Keep an eye on our website, performingartshouston.org/education for all the latest in arts education news.

Every Tenth Seat

Arts for All

We’re excited to announce Every Tenth Seat: Arts for All , a first-of-its kind commitment to arts access, allocating 10% of tickets to students, veterans, and community partners. That’s over 10,000 tickets in the 25/26 Season dedicated to the future of the arts and our city Additional details, including opportunities to support, coming later this year.
