Described as “phenomenal” Times, London) and “devastatingly beautiful” (Gramophone Magazine) award-winning choir Tenebrae is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles, renowned for its passion and precision. Under the direction of Nigel Short, Tenebrae performs at major festivals and venues across the globe, including the BBC Proms, Edinburgh International Festival, Leipzig Gewandhaus (Germany) and Melbourne Festival (Australia). The choir is renowned for its highly acclaimed interpretations of choral music ranging from the hauntingly passionate works of the Renaissance through to contemporary choral masterpieces, and is a dedicated advocate for contemporary composers, having worked with Judith Bingham, Ola Gjeilo, Alexander L’Estrange, Alexander Levine, Paweł Łukaszewski, Paul Mealor, Hilary Tann, Joby Talbot, Sir John Tavener and Will Todd. Tenebrae is also frequently engaged with the world’s finest orchestras, regularly appearing alongside the Academy of Ancient Music, Aurora Orchestra and Britten Sinfonia, and also curates an annual Holy Week Festival in partnership with St. John’s Smith Square.
Choral development is also central to Tenebrae’s ethos, and the choir has pioneered an inspirational workshop method, The Tenebrae Effect, designed to challenge and advance every participant by instilling skills essential to a Tenebrae performance. Since 2016 it has provided crucial training and performance opportunities to a quartet of outstanding young professional singers through its Associate Artist Scheme. As part of this fellowship, these young singers deliver regular choral development workshops in collaboration with Tenebrae’s education partners, Music Centre London, and London Youth Choir.
My wife, Mignon and I were asked to chair an event for Society for the Performing Arts (before the name change) in November 2016 called “Taste of SPA.” It was an event benefiting the organization’s Education and Community Engagement Programs. We moved to Houston in 2001 and quickly became involved in the arts. Vinson & Elkins, my law firm, has always supported the arts in Houston. We were honored to be a part of the organization and get more involved. After that event, I was asked to be on the Board.
Why do you believe it is important to support the arts?
The arts are humanity’s spirit and are We believe that supporting the arts in any community is important. We are especially fortunate in Houston to have so many wonderful arts organizations
that inspire us, entertain us, and provide outreach to the community. Arts can revive communities, create a vibrant society, and teach us so much about ourselves and others. We have always enjoyed the arts with our children from an early age, and they now have an appreciation for all forms of performing arts. Another reason we support the performing arts is to make sure that opportunity is afforded to children across the city through Education and Community Engagement programs as those provided by this organization.
Tell us about your background in the arts.
Mignon and I are both attorneys by trade and not really artistic or performers, but we have been patrons of the arts for many years and can certainly appreciate it. We enjoy all types of performances from plays to ballets to musicals. We love the variety of programming that Performance
Arts Houston provides each season. Mignon sits on several other arts Boards in Houston (Houston Ballet and Alley Theatre).
We have enjoyed a great number of performances over the years through the organization. Alton Brown is always a fun favorite, and we also enjoyed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.
What are you most looking forward to this season?
We are really looking forward to Preservation Hall Jazz Band, a New Orleans Institution. We lived in New Orleans during law school, and Mignon is from Louisiana, so we enjoy a taste of New Orleans when we can get it here. We are also excited about the variety this season.

What led you to apply for New/Now?
As a former awardee of the Houston Artist Virtual Commissioning Project, I had a great experience with their staff and was most keen to be able to collaborate with them on the New/Now project. Being an independent theatre maker does get tiring, and I wish to be just the playwright that I am at the core. This project was a promise that all my logistical challenges will be taken away and I will be able to focus on my craft.
What role does the city of Houston play in your inspiration and/or creative process?
The sheer experience of this city is enriching due to its diversity and inclusivity, which is most certainly reflected in its colorful art scene. A female Muslim writer of color can be a part of the Mistletoe Art Market and present a piece about the feelings of a Muslim during Christmas Time. This speaks volumes about the nature of a town. Houston and its multicultural spirit work as the canvas for my creativity.
The winners of New/Now: The Houston Artist Commissioning Project reflect the diversity of Houston, each combining their own unique background with music and theatrical art forms to create exciting new works to share with our community. See their World Premieres on FEB 24–25 at the Wortham Center.
What do you hope audiences learn from or experience through your commissioned work?
As a writer I like staying true to my craft, I never employ a lesson, a message, or a moral in my stories. To me, the sole purpose of telling a story is the fact that the story is worth telling. My aim is to make the audience think and analyze their choices and biases. That is what I intend to do in my commissioned piece.
What led you to apply for New/Now?
The opportunity to showcase my artistic work to Houston's local residents.
What role does the city of Houston play in your inspiration and/or creative process?
The city and its beautifully diverse people with a broad range of cultures and languages creating a sense of home.
What do you hope audiences learn from or experience through your commissioned work?
If we take a minute to reflect and analyze our surroundings with a tolerant heart, we might learn that we are individually and uniquely beautiful in our own way, but a complement to each other.
What led you to apply for New/Now?
I’m very grateful to Pepe ContrerasVidal for suggesting that we apply to
New/Now. Pepe is a pioneer in real world neuroimaging of the arts. The work we are doing together is a combination of artistic performance and scientific experiment, and Pepe and I are both eager to share it with new audiences.
What role does the city of Houston play in your inspiration and/or creative process?
Diversity is the heart and soul of Houston, both in its extraordinary mixture of cultures and its exciting range of cutting-edge industry, research, and the arts. I’m not sure a project like Diabelli 200 that involves a collaboration with a new music ensemble and a neuro-engineering center could arise in too many other places and am also proud that it brings together University of Houston, where Pepe teaches, and Rice, where I do.
What do you hope audiences learn from or experience through your commissioned work?
Back in 1819, composer and publisher
Anton Diabelli invited several dozen Austrian composers to submit a variation on a theme he’d written. Fifty composers sent in a single variation; Beethoven wrote thirty-three, which were published in 1823. How Beethoven’s approach differs from that of his contemporaries is very revealing about the creative process—it is like a sonic brain scan of imagination at work.
Diabelli 200 revisits Diabelli’s theme two hundred years later. In our performance, the conductor and pianist will be wearing portable EEG caps that will monitor their brain activity as they rehearse and perform. Data from the caps will be incorporated into the animated projections designed by composer Badie Khalegian. I hope that audiences will see that both the arts and sciences bring us knowledge about ourselves, looking into our inner lives and illuminating them in ways that often intersect.
Performing Arts Houston has begun to dedicate serious resources towards the elevation of Houston-based artists and their artistic practice. The works are presented in a large, highly visible stage (both actual and metaphorical), which presents an exciting opportunity to present stories that do not have a voice in the contemporary art world. The chance to collaborate in this way serves to put important, impactful, and relevant stories on the forefront of the Houston performing arts scene, in a way that compels audiences to pay attention and absorb the humanity of our stories.
Photos by Claire McAdamsWhat role does the city of Houston play in your inspiration and/or creative process?
My life has become inexorably connected and intertwined with this city - the zeniths and nadirs of my life have all occurred here. I'm a firm believer that my work will never be greater than my life - that is to say, my work must come from the depths of my slice of our human condition, and Houston has been the scaffolding upon which that is built. Until I no longer live here, my work is a part of the pluralistic artistic world of Houston to which I belong, and I am proud of being a part of that.
What do you hope audiences learn from or experience through your commissioned work?
At the core of Desert Shelter is an observation and expression of humanity. I want my work to build a bridge in between myself, the subject matter, the substantive core of this work, and audiences. Music is very much a conversation of authorship in between the creators (who are the stewards of ideas), the interpreters (who are fundamental in materializing those ideas), and the audience who become the authors of our work as it lives on through them and the real world.
A bridge that connects all three in conversation is the underlying goal of my practice.
The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has persevered through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world.
Touring throughout the South during the Jim Crow era of the 1940s and 1950s, the Blind Boys flourished thanks to their unique sound, which blended the close harmonies of early jubilee gospel with the more fervent improvisations of hard gospel. In the early 1960s, the band sang at benefits for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and were a part of the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement. But as the years passed, gospel fans started to drift away and follow the many singers who had originated in the church but were now recording secular popular music. And the Blind Boys, who refused many offers to ‘cross over’ to secular music, also saw their audiences dwindle. However, the Blind Boys persevered, and their time came again, starting in the 1980s with their starring role in the Obie Award-winning musical “The Gospel at Colonus,” which began a new chapter in their incredible history. It’s almost unbelievable that a group of blind, African American singers, who started out touring during a time of whites-only bathrooms, restaurants, and hotels, went on to win five GRAMMY® Awards, a Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY, be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and to perform at the White House for three different presidents.
Few would have expected them to still be going strong—stronger than ever, even—so many years after they first
joined voices, but they’ve proved as productive and as musically ambitious in recent years as they did in the beginning. In 2001, they released Spirit of the Century on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label, mixing traditional church tunes with songs by Tom Waits and the Rolling Stones, and won the first of their GRAMMY Awards. The next year they backed Gabriel on his album Up and joined him on a world tour, although a bigger break may have come when David Simon chose their cover of Waits’ ‘Way Down in the Hole’ as the theme song for the first season of HBO’s acclaimed series The Wire. Subsequent GRAMMY-winning albums have found them working with the likes of Ben Harper, Robert Randolph, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Allen Toussaint, and Willie Nelson.
In 2013 the band worked with Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) to release I’ll Find A Way, a powerful collection of gospel and spiritual songs new and old, featuring some of the Blind Boys’ most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys fans, including Merrill Garbus of tUnEyArDs, Patty Griffin, and Justin Vernon himself. In 2014 the Blind Boys released “Talkin’ Christmas!”, a collaboration with Taj Mahal, that continued the band’s streak of creating original and interesting work. It includes new versions of Christmas standards, covers of hidden gospel gems, and seven brand-new holiday songs featuring Money Mark on keyboards, Taj Mahal on vocals and songwriting collaborations with Stax Records soul legend William Bell.
In 2017 the Blind Boys released Almost Home on the band’s own BBOA Records label, in collaboration with Amazon Music. The 12-song collection serves as a fitting capstone to a seven-decade career that has both defined the sound of the American South and pushed it forward from the 20th century and into the 21st. Almost Home was recorded over four different sessions with four different GRAMMY-winning producers in four
different cities. John Leventhal recorded the Blind Boys and their band in New York City, Vance Powell in Nashville, Chris Goldsmith in Seattle, and Los Lobos' Steve Berlin at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals. The album is composed primarily of original songs which focus on the remarkable journey of the band’s two surviving original members at the time, long-time leader Clarence Fountain (who has since passed away), and current leader Jimmy Carter. It features songwriting contributions from an exceptional collection of artists including Valerie June, North Mississippi Allstars, Phil Cook, John Leventhal, Marc Cohn, Ruthie Foster, and more. Almost Home succeeds in looking backwards, while still sounding as vital and modern as ever.
2019 brought them back together with Marc Cohn and producer John Leventhal for Work To Do, a unique collection that combines the songwriting talents of Marc Cohn with the soul-stirring harmonies of the Blind Boys which falls on the heels of more than a year of live collaborative dates. Work To Do is comprised of three studio tracks by Cohn and the Blind Boys (two originals, including the title track, and a version of the gospel standard “Walk In Jerusalem”) plus seven intimate live performances recorded at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook, CT, during a taping of the PBS series The Kate. Original plans were to release an EP containing the studio tracks, but the excitement and magic captured during the taping inspired the decision to create this unique hybrid album.
Since they released their debut single, “I Can See Everybody’s Mother But Mine”, on the iconic Veejay label in 1948, the Blind Boys have been hailed as "gospel titans" by Rolling Stone and have collaborated with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Prince and Lou Reed, and performed on some of the world's most prestigious stages. The New York Times said that they "came to epitomize what is known as jubilee singing, a livelier breed of gospel music," adding that
"they made it zestier still by adding jazz and blues idioms and turning up the volume, creating a sound…like the rock 'n' roll that grew out of it." The New Yorker simply called them "legendary."
The Blind Boys' live shows are roofraising musical events that appeal to audiences of all cultures, as evidenced by an international itinerary that has taken them to virtually every continent. The Blind Boys of Alabama have attained the highest levels of achievement in a career that spans over 75 years and shows no signs of diminishing.
Most teenagers have not charted on Billboard, collaborated with Hall of Fame songwriter David Porter, or been endorsed by Hammond Organs and Fishman amps. But then Sarah Grace is not your typical teen, or even your typical singer, for that matter.
Millions of people were introduced to then-15-year-old singer a few years ago on Season 15 of The Voice. Sarah Grace is the first Voice contestant to play trumpet on the show, and the first to play organ. She won over the public
and judges alike as she made her way through to the semi-final round. Voice Coach Adam Levine hailed her as a “pint-sized powerhouse,” and fellow coach Jennifer Hudson praised Sarah Grace’s sassiness, while her coach, Kelly Clarkson, marveled at the teen’s “big, old-soul voice.” Viewers were similarly captivated by the soulful pop singer, who was a Public’s Vote winner during the four-week Live Playoffs. During her time on The Voice, Universal Republic released four singles of covers she performed on the show, exclusively on Apple Music/iTunes, which have since been released widely including Florence & the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over”, Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, and the Blind Boys of Alabama’s arrangement of “Amazing Grace.” In addition to a weekly television audience of ten million on The Voice, to follow, her performances on YouTube accumulated over twelve million views.
Sarah Grace and The Soul’s own sound effortlessly slips and slides between styles and eras, from modern pop to vintage blues and other American roots styles. Her songs reveal a wise-beyond-
her-years sophistication that blends genres into a stirring groove. In fact, her Voice performances exemplify this diversity with her range encompassing classic blues, traditional gospel, and recent rock hits.
Having found great success on The Voice, the Houston native is ready to go to the next stage – literally. In 2019 onward, Sarah Grace has been playing more live concerts and national festivals with her band, The Soul. The group is an established presence in their hometown Houston music scene, where Sarah Grace and The Soul were crowned “Best Newcomer” by the Houston Press. She is excited about recording her debut album and touring, which is worked in around her senior year in high school - at Houston’s prestigious High School of Performing and Visual Arts (where Beyoncé attended, and Blue October was formed). Sarah Grace signed a record deal with German record label Ruf Records, noted for successes with artists like Samantha Fish. In 2021 Sarah Grace will not only graduate from high school but will record and release her debut album.
