The first American museum designed by a woman, Zaha Hadid’s Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art is as much an attraction as the rotating exhibits inside. (There’s no permanent collection.) Take the stairs all the way up for full effect; they’re framed by a glass atrium. At the top, stop by the fully stocked UnMuseum art lab where impromptu artmaking is encouraged. Proprietor Molly Wellman is equal parts Jedi master of bourbon and tattooed Bettie Page. Take a seat at the bar in this 19thcentury wig shop-turnedneighbourhood speakeasy and order a Seelbach. The recipe (bourbon, bitters and a splash of champagne) was lost during Prohibition and found in a Louisville hotel vault not long ago. So the story goes: Wellman’s long on bootlegger lore. Côté bourbon, Molly Wellman, la patronne aux allures de Bettie Page tatouée, en connaît un flacon. Asseyez-vous au comptoir de cette échoppe de perruquier du xixe siècle faite taverne de quartier et commandez un Seelbach. It’s easy for chef Daniel Wright to be in two places at once; a hidden passage at the back of his two Vine Street bistros connects the kitchens. Senate serves up haute dogs on breadboards with toppings like homemade kimchee and braised short ribs, while Mediterranean tapas bar Abigail Street’s barrel-toglass ethos means small-run wines are always on tap.
