adie nos obliga, pero podemos dividir al mundo entre dos tipos de turistas: los que gustan y no de los todo incluido. La idea no es generar polémica, pero el asunto es que nos fuimos directo a Punta Cana –el paraíso de los resort, de las bodas playeras y lunas de miel– para encontrar opciones fuera de estos. Si bien nadie en su sano juicio gustaría de abandonar un espacio como Paradisus Punta Cana, un lugar pensado para que el turista disfrute y no mueva dedo alguno, esa fantasía de la vida horizontal donde (casi) todo es a pedir de boca, puede aislar al visitante frente al entorno. Como existen viajes y viajeros para todos los gustos, si se anima a experimentar el destino más allá del lobby, tome nota. Afuera, esa mezcla llamada Punta Cana es una zona que se puede contabilizar en kilómetros–playa: cincuenta, cuya parte más extensa se denomina Bávaro. Ahí, de inmediato se palpa el ADN dominicano, donde la risa y la informalidad son la base de cualquier interacción. Y se percibe también que las barberías y hasta el corte de pelo con el que sales a la calle son tan importantes como estar al tanto del promedio del bateador de turno. Que sobre los motoconchos –mototaxi, la más económica y popular forma de moverse–, si te esfuerzas en hacer espacio, cabe la familia entera, y que sus conductores pueden llevarte a salvo a destino mientras hablan por teléfono durante todo el camino con alguna de sus tres conquistas. Entonces la ola de calor y humedad hace que necesites un limpiaparabrisas sobre tu frente y nada mejor que entrar a un colmado (kiosco de barrio) y combatir los 30 y tantos grados con una fría, como le llaman a la cerveza Presidente.

No one in their right mind would leave a place like Paradisus Punta Cana, a resort designed for tourists to enjoy without lifting a finger, but this fantasy of horizontal life – where (nearly) everything is at your beck and call – can alienate visitors from their surroundings. If you’re the kind of tourist who prefers to venture outside the confines of the lobby, take note. Beyond the borders of the resort, Punta Cana boasts more than 30 miles of beach, and the longest stretch of sand is Bávaro. Here, you’ll get an instant feeling for life in the Dominican Republic, where warmth and laughter provide the foundation for every interaction. You’ll notice that barbershops and the latest haircut are just as important as keeping up with the batting average of the hitter at the plate. Motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) are the cheapest and most popular way of getting around. With a bit of effort, the whole family will fit, and the driver will get you safely to your destination while chatting the entire way on his cellphone with one of his many girlfriends. The heat and humidity will make you wish you had a windshield wiper on your forehead, so to combat temperatures topping 86°F, there’s nothing better than a fría, the nickname for a cold Presidente beer.
