Anand Niketan School Name of firm: HRA (Himanshu Raval Architects) Client: Kamalbhai Type of Project: Institutional (School) Location: Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India Student’s role within project: Designer and 3D Visualizer This institutional project of school was very exciting for me because it was the first time I get to work on such a large scale project. The client’s vision was very strong of expansion of his school franchise to outskirts of the city so that more people can have easy access to education. The site for this project was split into two parts, the rectangular shape was selected to be designed and worked out in phase one and eventually the design for phase two was expected to start. The rectangular shape of the site broguht the idea of blocking rectangular classrooms and develop a concept of staggered form building. Ultimately, to achieve the building permit regulations, setbacks, and fsi standards, to fulfil the area requirement, terraces were designed that can workout as formal and informal gathering spaces in the school. To minimise vehicular interfearence, all the four-wheeler parking, two-wheeler parking, and buss parking were thought to be designed in basement so that children can be safe on the campus. This lead to good space for open ground which can be utilised as multifunctional space.

Design Skills

For me, working on this project was very overwhelming at first. First time I was working on large scale project in an architectural office, and first time I had to collaborate with other members of the firm. One of the challeneges that I face during this project was to create multiple options for the building and model them in 3D so that client can easily understand the effects of various options.

Many times client had brought up new requirements for the project and then whole designed had to be reworked and this was a challenge for me. Working on column layouts, creating multiple layouts with variations and modeling them in softwares eventually helped me to gain good skills in softwares. Moreover, designing several options for same building and achieving the target area requirement was a big challeneg but it opened up new perspectives for me and my thoughts started to align as I progressed through the design process. After working on this project, I feld confident and I learnt how a large scale project is approached by planning its area requirement, phasing the project, and starting with the design. This has helped me in my various academic projects and I feel comfortable to design a large scale project.

The image shows the school building and vacant lot for phase two design. The terraces of the building and the ground are located towards the open lot with the thought that in phase two, spcaes can be designed in a way that they correspond to the phase one building.

Project 1 Collaboration Being a lagre scale project, it was a team work to work thought the different stages of the project. At the time of this project, I believe it was the largest project amongst the other project on which our firm was working. Our head architect had provided many usefull feedbacks and discussing & working under his guidance had provided an amazing opportunity to understand the thoughts of a praticing architect. During the work distribution, I was given the task to work on the column placement for the building. This was a very good opportunity for me to gain importacne of structural system in architecture. Initially, I was facing challeneges to understand the structural grids, orientation of columns, span of beams between two columns, and many more concerns. Working on this drawing, I ask for help to one of my team member. I was taught how to set column grid and how the column placement is done keeping in mind all the different levels of the building. This has helped me in a way that, after gaining the knowledge of structure and its placement, when I approach any design, I am always thinking about how this space would be supported, and this in a way help me to not to think about any space design that might not be able to practically stand.

So, I believe this helped me to become more effective, practical and efficient in design.

In the above three drawings, I had learnt to place columns and prepare a structural layout of the building plan at different levels. Here in these drawings, in the basement layout I also learnd how parking spaces are worked out around the columns and how sometimes column grid also depends upon parking spaces.

The image shows a 3D visualization of school building with detached administrative building and a security cabin. This options of the design had more classrooms than required in order to make it a little bit future proof, if any other functions were to add in the project they could be incorporated within.

Practice Portfolio The two images are a comparision fo different concepts of building. The left building is more compact and squarish and has different facade treatment with uniform stepping of floors while, the building in the right image is more spread out on the site and has large glass openings for classroom. The building in the left image is a conditions where more open space is achieved for users to utilize while, the images on the right shows that the green open space is quite small and it feels like the school is trying to focus more on academic rather than physical sports.

This images shows the hollow plith space on the ground floor level which is supposed to be utilized for informal exhibition, informal gatherings, workshops, and other small activities. The images also represents column and beam grid and a situation in the design where column is attached to walls.

The images on the left represents the view of the North-Western direction of the building where the staircase and service block is places on the Western direction to avoid heat. All the glass openings facing on this direction are of classrooms and labs.

Practice Portfolio The images shows the complete building model with site development. It is observed that the admin block is place near the main road or easy access. On one side of this block there is a ramp going into the basement and on the other side of the building there is the pedestrian entry with a small securitu cabin.

Shalin Patel This image shows the experiance of the terrace. The space is open with high railing and overlooks into the open space of the school. This space was expected to utilized majorly for lunch breaks where students can gather and interact.

Project 2

Niravbhai Farmhouse Name of firm: HRA (Himanshu Raval Architects) Client: Niravbhai Type of Project: Residential (Small Scale) Location: Abu Road, Rajasthan, India Student’s role within project: Designer This small scale residential project is a weekend house near a hill station. The client had a vision of developing a personal house for family to stay. For this project client had certain requirements regarding site planning, he was envisioning the property to be utilized for special occasions and events. He had asked to provide car parking near the street for guests and parking in property for familty. Also, they had requirement for small swimming pool that is located quite privately. Working around this small project, my head architect asked me to experiment with different materials and amalgation of two to three materials to develop and interesting exterial facade and unique interior user experience. Here in the project I tried to develop a language with exposed concrete, exposed brick, and plaster walls.

Design Skills

This project was a small project yet there were challeneges. One of the challenge that I feel was major was the orientation of the lot. The direction of entry into the lot was opposite than ideal situation and the client followed certain religious beliefs regarding the openings and this was challenging because a building had to be oriented and designed in a way to minimse heat gain. But to overcome this challenge, and to explore the idea of using multiple materials in design, I had worked out a solution by utilizing concrete’s application into large overhands to block sunlight. With this I was able to design interesting exterior facade. As a designer, overcoming this challenge help me to understand that there are always solutions for problems, its just a matter of time and changing our way of thinking.

The exploration of three different materials is observed in the image. The introduction of water body is also seen in this image, this are placed to integrate the sustainable strategy of evaporative cooling.

Project 3 House 644

Name of firm: HRA (Himanshu Raval Architects) Client: Bipinbhai Patel Type of Project: Residential (Small Scale) Location: Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India Student’s role within project: Site Visit, Drafting, Consulting The residential project is set in an urban context with houses in the surroundings.

The client of this project had living requirement of many spaces and the site area was small. This lead to concept of new design and strategies where the house is elevated more to accommodate the space requirements. Interestingly enough, from the terrace of this house, the state’s assembly building is visible. This house was set to be designed with luxurious features incorporated within. Certain strategies had been thought of in this house like, home theatre, elevator, complete automation, mutli room audio, and solar panels. Visiting the site regularly was important to keep the quality of the work in check. there were certain situations where on site design changes had to be done that have been presented on the other page. There were many site visits away from hometown in order to get the best material available in India, like, a visit was done in a granite quarrey a few 100 miles away, another visit was done to Southern area to get select the best seasoned wood for framwork in house. Multiple visits and discussions were done for electrical layout and automation systems.

Design Skills

This project was physically small but large in its own way. To the extent to which any task had to be processed, lots of small decisions were taken.

Coordination with consultants, contractor and labor was a big deal for this project. Moreover, the house had inverted beam structure and had elevator inside. This challenges were not easy to overcome, visiting site and making notes was easy, but to convey and make the contractors and consultants coordinate was not easy. There were times when I had to push and rush into communication in order have the needed done. Working and visiting on site for this project was challenging but was also very helpful. Visiting places like quarreys and doing market surveys helped me to gain knowledge of the materials and of the market. I also learned that communication is an essential aspect of design, conveying the message either by drawing or practical or verbal information is essential for the idea to come to real life.

The images shows concrete walls, brick walls, and column with reinforcement. The ceiling on the 2nd floor is observed with beams flushing with slab, that show the inverted beam construction.

These onsite notes shows changes that were to be made. Some changes required breaking of walls. The image on the right is of one of the quarrey’s from the site visit to Udaipur, a small city in Rajasthan state. During the visit, the cutting of the granite was taking place.

Project 3 Collaboration Collaborating with automation agency was a big step form me because I had never worked with automation in projects. For this I was asked to prepare electrical layout of the house and consult with the people from automation compony. During this process I had the opportunity to visit the compony’s office and studio for visit and experience of the system and understand the functionality of these systems. This collaborative experience was very helpful for me where I get to learn vast technologies that can be implemented into architecture. Our client had requirement of automation system and we had discussed lighting and security as the major automation systems. I believe that the client’s idea of automation is the reason that I got to collaborate with automation compony and gained this valuable knowlege that will help me in future projects too.

Project 4 Shalin 7

Name of firm: HRA (Himanshu Raval Architects) Client: Shalin buildcon Type of Project: High-rise Residential (Large Scale) Location: Vavol, Gujarat, India Student’s role within project: Designer This high-rise residential project was to design around 180-200 hourisng unites with 3 bedroom and 4 bedroom unites. The idea was to develop the form that is unique and varies that that of ordinary. The design process was quite straight forwards, firstly, a unit was designed, secondly, a cluster of 4 houses were formed by rotating these unites and lastly, they were staked one above another. The internal layout of these type of houses are typical but I was asked to explore in the exterior facade. I worked out a way of fliping the shape of balcony of the house and achieve kind of a unique form where the chape of balcony changes. This lead to two different floor plan layouts that were almost similar.

Design Skills

In an high-rise residential project, views form the house matters. this is because the people living on the 10th floor cannot go the the garden regularly nor do they have ther own garden. My challenge here was to achieve a good units plan with enough indoor and out door spaces so that people feel comfortable in their homes and can have their own little green space. I had worked on several options where I explore different balcony options for the units and tried to bring the nature closer to the people. With this challene I leaned that nature is very important and it is very difficult to bring it close to architecture successfully.

This view shows the staggered placement of balcony and viewing it on all directions it looks like a unique facade.
