OUR MISSION The mission of Soybean Innovation Lab is to provide researchers, extensionists, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and funders operating across the entire value chain the critical information and technology needed for the successful advancement of soybean development in Africa.

MESSAGE from SIL Dear Attendees, We are excited to welcome you all to the 2023 SIL Research Retreat and Board Meeting! St. Louis and the Last Hotel will serve as great hosts as we bring together SIL’s large and diverse network.

This year’s theme focuses on impact at scale as we solidify our implementation of SIL 3.0 and i2i 2.0. You will see this theme emerge as the stories of our scaling partners and clients take a central role in this year’s event.

Of course, we’ll also mix in a healthy dose of fellowship and networking activities so that you will have a fun and enriching four days.

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI 5

St. Louis is a major Midwestern city with welcoming people and beautiful landmarks such as the iconic Gateway Arch, lending the city the nickname of the “Gateway City” or the “Gateway of the West.”

The area that has become known as St. Louis is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Illiniois Confederation, also known as the Illini or Illiniwek.

Today, the city of St. Louis boasts more free major visitor attractions than anywhere in the U.S. outside of the nation’s capital. The Saint Louis Art Museum, Science Center, and Zoo, History Museum, Museum of Westward Expansion, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Laumeier Sculpture Park, Citygarden and many other sites are open free of charge.

Also noteworthy is the Wainwright Building, located on Seventh Street in downtown St. Louis, which was the world’s first skyscraper, designed by architect Louis Sullivan and completed in 1891.

HISTORICAL FACTS 1764 St. Louis was founded in 1764 as a French fur-trading village by Pierre Laclede. He named the city “St. Louis” for King Louis IX, the crusader king who was the patron saint of Laclede’s then ruler King Louis XV.

1873 Susan Blow started the first kindergarten in the United States in St. Louis in 1873. St. Louis was also the site of the first public grade school and the first public high school west of the Mississippi.

1993

The indigenous people in the area built numerous temple and residential earthwork mounds on both sides of the Mississippi River, with Cahokia Mounds being the regional center. The many major earthworks within St. Louis boundaries earned the the city the nickname "Mound City.” These mounds were mostly demolished during the city's development.

1980 Although the 1986 tax reform and the recession of the late 1980s and early 1990s slowed growth considerably, several major projects were completed such as the MetroLink light rail line, the Convention Center expansion, Kiel Civic Center (Blues - Hockey Team), and Trans World Dome (Rams Football Team).

The great Mississippi River flood of 1993 detracted from urban revitalization efforts somewhat, but most of the low-lying industrial areas of the City were protected by a floodwall. The most severe flooding in the City occurred along the River des Peres, a drainageway serving the western and southern parts of the City and flowing into the Mississippi River.
