HOLLYWOOD'S SLOW-MOTION REVOLUTION, DOWN UNDER

In the world of Hollywood glamour, where every detail counts and every moment is scrutinised, the Glambot camera has become a game-changer on the red carpet at events like the Oscars and the Met Gala

Introduced to capture the dazzling fashion and highoctane energy of these star-studded events, the Glambot has quickly established itself as a must-have for event photographers and fashionistas alike.

The magic of the Glambot lies in its ability to create stunning, high-definition slow-motion footage that brings the red carpet to life. Unlike traditional 25 frame per second cameras that provide a straightforward shot, the Glambot, licensed in the USA by E!News, uses a combination of advanced robotic arms and state-ofthe-art cameras to deliver a unique perspective. At the heart of the Glambot’s functionality is its high-speed camera system. Operating at frame rates of up to 1,000 frames per second, it can freeze a moment in time with crystal clarity. This capability delivers dramatic slowmotion sequences that accentuate the elegance and intricacies of the red carpet attire.

The excitement surrounding the Glambot extends beyond its technical prowess. For celebrities and fashion enthusiasts, it's a thrilling experience to see their red carpet moments immortalised in such a spectacular fashion. As celebrities strut their stuff, the device moves in a circular motion around them, capturing every twirl, wink, and flowing gown in exquisite detail. Whether it’s the shimmer of a sequin gown or the delicate movement of a flowing cape, the Glambot ensures that no detail is lost.

Sparklebot is Australia’s solution to Glambot inspired events and offers this Hollywood grade tech to the Australian events scene. Melbourne based Sparklebot is owned and operated by Robotface, Australia’s leading motion control production company and delivers productions Australia wide. SoWot caught up with their Producer & Co-Founder, Stephanie David at the recent Snaffle sponsored season launch of FBoy Island Australia, now streaming on BINGE.

“In essence, the invention has redefined red carpet photography. By combining cutting-edge technology with a flair for the dramatic, it has transformed how we experience and celebrate Australia’s most glamorous events like The TV Week Logie Awards and The ARIA’s.” Sparklebot has been fortunate enough to capture the stars of Australian television including Hamish Blake and Andy Lee and the casts of popular television series including Heartbreak High, Colin from Accounts, as well as music icons including G-Flip, The Rubens, Emma Watkins and AFL sporting legends.

“Today we’re here for BINGE and their sponsor Snaffle, to add a touch of sparkle to the season 2 launch of FBoy Island Australia. This activation will allow fans of the show and members of the public to strut their stuff on the Snaffle red carpet alongside the stars of the show including host Abbie Chatfield.”

Every strutter receives a free Sparklebot slow-mo video to share with their friends and followers, courtesy of Snaffle.

“The content so far speaks for itself – All the Snaffle struts have been amazing! Just as members of the FBoy Island Australia cast have their individual flair, so too do their Sparklebot moves!” Stephanie added.

“The strut is the feeling our customers have when they get what they want for bite-sized payments and still have their cash in their pocket, so seeing the strut come to life here today on the Snaffle red carpet has been an amazing activation for our brand!” says Snaffle’s Chief Marketing Officer, Paul Winslow.

The camera’s popularity is particularly evident on social media. Clips captured by the Sparklebot often go viral, showcasing the most glamorous moments in a way that’s both shareable and captivating. It’s not uncommon for fans to replay their favourite celebrity's red carpet entrance multiple times, marvelling at the slow-motion footage that highlights every detail of their ensemble.

While it captures the glamour at Australia’s leading events, the Sparklebot ensures that the magic of the red carpet remains as enchanting and unforgettable as ever. As life continues to move at an ever increasing pace, at least one element is popular for slowing it down.

TOP TIPS FOR MOVING HOUSE

Ensuring a Smooth Transition

Moving house can be both exciting and stressful. Whether you're relocating across town or to a different city, proper planning and organisation can make the process smoother and less daunting. Here are some top tips to help you navigate your move efficiently

1. CREATE A MOVING TIMELINE

Before you start packing, create a timeline that outlines key tasks such as notifying utilities, hiring movers (if needed), and scheduling time off work for the move. A timeline keeps you organised and ensures that everything gets done in a timely manner.

2. DECLUTTER BEFORE YOU PACK

Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter your belongings. Go through each room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard. This not only lightens your load but also reduces moving costs and clutter in your new home.

3. LABEL EVERYTHING CLEARLY

As you pack, label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This makes unpacking much easier and helps movers know where to place boxes in your new home. Consider colour-coding or using a numbering system for even more organization.

4. PACK ESSENTIALS SEPARATELY

Pack a separate box or bag with essentials you'll need right away in your new home, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, chargers, and basic kitchen items. Keep this box with you during the move so you can access these items easily.

5. TAKE INVENTORY

Keep a detailed inventory of all your belongings as you pack. This will be helpful for insurance purposes and can serve as a checklist when unpacking. Include descriptions and photographs of valuable items for reference.

6. NOTIFY IMPORTANT PARTIES

Make a list of parties that need to be notified about your move, such as utilities, banks, insurance providers, and subscription services. Arrange for services to be transferred or canceled as needed.

7. SECURE YOUR VALUABLES

Keep important documents, jewelery, and other valuables with you during the move rather than packing them with the rest of your belongings. This ensures they stay safe and easily accessible.

8. ARRANGE FOR UTILITIES AND SERVICES

Contact utility companies well in advance to arrange for disconnection at your current home and connection at your new home. This includes electricity, gas, water, internet, and any other essential services.

9. INSPECT BOTH PROPERTIES

Before moving out and after moving in, conduct a thorough inspection of both properties. Note any existing damage to avoid disputes later on. Take photos for documentation purposes if necessary.

10. PLAN FOR PETS AND CHILDREN

Moving can be stressful for pets and children. Arrange for a sitter or daycare on moving day to keep them safe and occupied. Ensure pets have their essentials packed and easily accessible.

11. PREPARE FOR MOVING DAY

On moving day, have a plan in place for directing movers, if hired, or friends and family helping you. Keep important contacts handy, and have cash on hand for any unexpected expenses or tips for movers.

12. STAY FLEXIBLE

Despite meticulous planning, unexpected challenges may arise during a move. Stay flexible and adaptable, and don't hesitate to ask for help if needed. Remember, the goal is to settle into your new home smoothly and stress-free.

By following these tips, you can streamline the moving process and focus on enjoying your new home. With careful planning and organization, moving day can be a positive experience marking the beginning of a new chapter in your life.

THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION

Tech Platforms Transforming Our Lives

In the past decade, technology has radically reshaped how we live, work, and connect. From the way we hail a ride to the way we find local services, tech platforms have introduced unprecedented convenience and efficiency into our daily routines.

Uber, founded in 2009, has fundamentally changed how we think about transportation. The company’s innovative app-based service allows users to book rides with a few taps on their smartphone, bypassing traditional taxi services. This convenience has made Uber a household name worldwide.

Uber’s impact extends beyond just convenience. It has introduced features like real-time tracking, cashless payments, and rating systems that enhance safety and transparency. For drivers, Uber offers a flexible work opportunity, allowing them to earn on their own schedule. This model has inspired numerous other services in the gig economy, from food delivery to home cleaning.

Uber’s introduction of services like Uber Pool, where riders share trips with others heading in the same direction, has also influenced urban mobility patterns. By promoting carpooling, Uber is contributing to efforts to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions in cities globally.

While Uber transformed transportation, Local Expert is changing how we discover and book local services. Based in Australia, Local Expert is an online platform that connects users with a wide range of local service providers, from plumbers and electricians to tutors and personal trainers. This platform is streamlining the process of finding reliable local help, saving time and effort for consumers.

Local Expert leverages technology to provide detailed profiles of service providers, ensuring users can make informed decisions. The platform also offers instant booking and secure payment options, enhancing convenience and trust for both users and service providers. By creating a centralised hub for local services, Local Expert is making it easier for small businesses to reach new customers and grow their client base.

Airbnb is another tech platform that has revolutionised an industry - in this case, hospitality. Launched in 2008, Airbnb allows people to rent out their homes or spare rooms to travelers. This peer-to-peer model offers travelers unique, often more affordable accommodation options while enabling hosts to monetise their extra space.

Airbnb has diversified travel experiences, making it possible for people to stay in distinctive locations - from treehouses to castles - that traditional hotels might not offer. For hosts, it provides an additional income stream, which can be particularly beneficial in economically challenging times.

Moreover, Airbnb has sparked the growth of a community of travelers and hosts who value authentic, localised experiences. This shift has influenced the broader travel industry, encouraging traditional hotels to innovate and offer more personalized services.

These tech platforms have not only transformed their respective industries but have also had a broader societal impact. They have driven the growth of the gig economy, offering flexible work opportunities to millions. They have also fostered a culture of transparency and accountability, with user reviews and ratings becoming a standard feature in service industries.

Additionally, the success of these platforms has spurred innovation, inspiring a wave of startups aiming to disrupt traditional models in various sectors.

Companies like Uber, Local Expert, and Airbnb have set a precedent, showing that leveraging technology to create user-centric solutions can lead to widespread adoption and significant industry change.

Despite their successes, these platforms also face challenges. For instance, Uber has faced regulatory scrutiny and protests from traditional taxi services worldwide. In response, the company has had to adapt its business practices to comply with local laws and improve conditions for drivers. Similarly, Airbnb has encountered regulatory hurdles in various cities regarding short-term rental laws and housing market impacts.

Looking ahead, tech platforms will continue to evolve and influence our daily lives. As artificial intelligence, blockchain, and other advanced technologies develop, we can expect even more innovative solutions that further enhance convenience, efficiency, and connectivity.

The rise of tech platforms like Uber and Local Expert illustrates the profound impact technology can have on traditional industries. By leveraging digital tools to solve real-world problems, these companies are not only changing the way we do things but also setting the stage for a future where technology seamlessly integrates into every aspect of our lives.

In this rapidly changing landscape, staying adaptable and forward-thinking is key. As users, embracing these innovations allows us to enjoy greater convenience and efficiency, while businesses must continue to innovate to meet the evolving needs of their customers. The digital revolution is far from over, and the best is yet to come.

THE HIGH PRICE OF DRIVING

The Federal Government's Family Car Tax to add thousands to popular vehicles

In a move that has ignited widespread concern and debate, the Australian Government's new family car tax is set to increase the price of new vehicles in Australia by thousands of dollars.

This policy, aimed at reducing carbon emissions, is projected to have a substantial financial impact on Australian families, particularly those who favor the country’s best-selling cars.

The family car tax is part of a broader strategy to combat climate change by discouraging the purchase of highemission vehicles. The tax imposes carbon penalties based on a vehicle’s emissions, which can significantly drive up their prices. While the environmental goals behind the policy are commendable, the financial repercussions for consumers are considerable. Families across the nation are bracing for the impact, especially those who rely on larger vehicles for their daily activities and work.

Australia's top three best-selling vehicles in 2023 were all utes, a clear testament to their immense popularity. The Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, and Mitsubishi Triton have dominated the sales charts, each known for their reliability, versatility, and performance. However, these beloved vehicles are now at the centre of the contentious policy shift. The Toyota HiLux, a fixture in Australian driveways and worksites, is set to face significant price hikes. Praised for its durability and versatility, the HiLux has been a favorite among tradies and families alike. With Labor’s new carbon penalties, the cost of purchasing a new HiLux will increase by thousands, potentially making it less accessible to many Australians.

Similarly, the Ford Ranger, celebrated for its power and off-road capabilities, will also be affected. The Ranger’s robust design and performance have made it a top choice for those needing a vehicle that can handle tough terrain and heavy loads. However, the added financial burden from the carbon penalties could deter potential buyers, impacting sales and accessibility. The Mitsubishi Triton, another top-seller, is not spared from the price surge either. Known for its affordability and practicality, the Triton has been a go-to vehicle for budget-conscious buyers who need a reliable ute. The new tax, however, threatens to undermine its market position by making it significantly more expensive.

The new tax doesn’t just affect utes. Family sedans, SUVs, and other popular models are also set to see price increases. The Toyota Camry, Mazda CX-5, and Hyundai Tucson, which are popular among families for their reliability and comfort, will also become more expensive due to the carbon penalties. The Toyota Camry, a long-standing favourite for its reliability and fuel efficiency, will see a price increase as a result of the new tax. While it emits less CO2 compared to larger vehicles, the penalties will still raise its cost, impacting families looking for a dependable sedan. The Mazda CX-5, a top-selling SUV known for its blend of style, comfort, and performance, will also be affected. The carbon penalties will make this popular family vehicle more expensive, potentially pushing it out of reach for some buyers. The Hyundai Tucson, another favoured family SUV, will face similar price hikes. Known for its practicality and value, the Tucson's increased cost due to the new tax may deter potential buyers looking for an affordable and reliable vehicle.

The financial implications of this policy are considerable. Many Australian families rely on these vehicles for personal use, as well as business and work-related purposes. The increased cost of purchasing these vehicles will place an additional financial strain on these families, particularly those in rural and regional areas where larger vehicles are often a necessity rather than a luxury. Critics argue that while the goal of reducing carbon emissions is important, the method of imposing a steep financial penalty on popular family vehicles may not be the most effective approach. They suggest that alternative incentives for purchasing more eco-friendly vehicles or investing in sustainable transportation infrastructure could achieve similar environmental benefits without disproportionately affecting Australian families.

The new family car tax is set to make a significant impact on the up front price of new vehicles in Australia, affecting popular models across the board. While the policy aims to reduce carbon emissions, the financial burden it places on Australian families raises questions about its fairness and effectiveness. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this new tax will shape the future of vehicle ownership in Australia.

IS CINEMA DEAD? Exploring the Evolution of Film in the Digital Age

In an era dominated by streaming services, viral videos, and the allure of binge watching, many have questioned whether cinema, as we once knew it, is dead.

The answer isn’t straightforward. Instead of facing demise, cinema is undergoing a profound transformation—a metamorphosis fueled by technological advancements, changing viewer habits, and the relentless march of time. Streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ have revolutionised how audiences consume content. With a vast library of films and original productions available at the click of a button, the traditional cinema experience has faced formidable competition.

The convenience of watching movies from the comfort of home has reshaped viewing habits, challenging the appeal of the big screen. Yet, amidst the convenience of streaming, the allure of the cinema persists. The experience of going to a movie theatre remains a cherished ritual for many. It offers more than just a film; it's about immersing oneself in a darkened room with a large screen, enveloped by surround sound, and sharing the experience with strangers.

Cinema as an art form remains vibrant and evolving. Filmmakers continue to push boundaries, experimenting with storytelling techniques, visual effects, and narrative structures. Directors like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve advocate for the cinematic experience, emphasising the importance of cinemas in fully appreciating their films’ grandeur.

Technological innovations continue to redefine cinema. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are pushing the boundaries of immersive storytelling, offering audiences new ways to engage with narratives. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also making its mark, influencing everything from script analysis to predictive analytics in film marketing.

Despite the seismic shifts to streaming, cinema retains its cultural significance and ability to provoke thought, spark conversations, and shape societal discourse. Iconic films like "Parasite," "Black Panther," and "Nomadland" demonstrate cinema's power to reflect and challenge prevailing social norms, earning critical acclaim and influencing public consciousness.

According to thewaltdisneycompany.com Deadpool & Wolverine’ is now the highest grossing R-Rated Film Ever. The film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s has returned US $1.086 billion (as at August 16, 2024) and broke records when it kicked off with US $444 million globally in July.

But why do some films make it in cinema while others do not. The much anticipated “Furiosa – A Mad Max Saga for example, failed to live up to expectations while the strategy to hold off on the release of Top Gun Maverick until the shut downs of COVID had passed proved a financial winner. Cinema must offer the 5th element and be balanced in doing so, but finding the elusive balance is difficult.

So, is cinema dead? Far from it. Instead, it is undergoing a transformation - an evolution driven by technological innovation, shifting viewer preferences, and the resilience of creative storytelling. While the landscape may continue to change, one thing remains constant: the enduring allure of cinema as a powerful medium for storytelling, entertainment, and cultural reflection.

As we navigate this new cinematic landscape, embracing both tradition and innovation, let us celebrate the diversity of voices and narratives that continue to enrich our cinematic experience. Cinema is not deadit is adapting, evolving, and thriving in ways that reflect our ever-changing world. And through it all, the unique experience of sitting in a darkened cinema, surrounded by the shared emotions of fellow moviegoers, continues to hold a special place in our hearts and culture

Pioneering Cryogenic Preservation

Southern Cryonics, Australia’s premier cryonics organisation, has reached a significant milestone in its quest to extend human life through advanced preservation techniques. Located in New South Wales, the company has successfully cryopreserved its first client, marking a pivotal moment in the field of cryogenic preservation in the Southern Hemisphere.

Earlier this year, Southern Cryonics achieved a landmark success by cryopreserving a Sydney man in his 80s, who passed away from natural causes. This achievement is a testament to the organisation’s dedication to advancing cryonics technology and providing hope for future medical breakthroughs.

Cryonics involves preserving individuals at extremely low temperatures with the intent of future revival. Following the legal declaration of death, the preservation process begins. The body is cooled to near freezing temperatures to slow decomposition. Southern Cryonics utilizes advanced vitrification techniques, where bodily fluids are replaced with cryoprotectants, preventing ice crystal formation and minimising cellular damage.

Once prepared, the body is placed in liquid nitrogen at temperatures of -196°C, effectively halting all biological processes. This state of suspended animation is maintained until the day medical science advances enough to potentially revive and cure the preserved individuals.

Southern Cryonics operates a state-of-the-art facility designed to ensure the long-term preservation and safety of its clients. The facility is engineered to withstand natural disasters and power outages, providing a secure environment for the Dewars—specialised storage units where the bodies are kept at consistent ultra-low temperatures.

Cryonics, though promising, is surrounded by ethical and legal debates. Preserving human bodies for future revival raises questions about identity, consent, and the definition of death. Southern Cryonics is committed to navigating these challenges with transparency and integrity, working closely with ethicists, legal experts, and policymakers to create robust ethical guidelines.

Informed consent is a cornerstone of Southern Cryonics’ operations. Clients and their families are thoroughly briefed on the process, risks, and uncertainties, ensuring they make well-informed decisions about their participation in cryonic preservation.

Source: Cryonics Institute

The Sydney client's identity has been kept confidential to respect his family’s privacy. His decision to undergo cryonic preservation was driven by the hope that future medical advancements could one day offer a new lease on life.

The man’s body was carefully prepared using Southern Cryonics’ advanced vitrification techniques, ensuring optimal preservation. He now rests in one of the facility’s state-of-the-art Dewars, a silent testament to the potential of cryogenic preservation.

Southern Cryonics’ achievement is not just a technical success; it represents hope and a vision for the future. As they continue to innovate and refine their preservation techniques, the dream of future resuscitation becomes more tangible.

“We are committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible,” says Dr. Alan Davis, CEO of Southern Cryonics.

“Our work is about more than just preserving bodies; it’s about preserving the hope that future medical advancements can extend and improve human life.” With a steadfast commitment to excellence, innovation, and ethical practice, Southern Cryonics is paving the way for a future where life can be extended beyond current limitations.

Southern Cryonics has made history with the successful cryopreservation of its first client, marking a significant advancement in the field of cryonics. Their dedication to scientific innovation and ethical integrity positions them as a leader in cryogenic preservation, offering a beacon of hope for those dreaming of a second chance at life. As they continue to push the boundaries of possibility, the future of cryonics looks ever brighter.

BEYOND THE HORIZON The Dawn of Space Tourism

The dream of space travel, once confined to the realm of science fiction, is becoming a reality for everyday adventurers. With the emergence of space tourism, companies like Virgin Galactic are pioneering journeys that take ordinary people beyond Earth's boundaries into space.

This new frontier promises to transform travel, offering a unique perspective on our planet and igniting the imaginations of aspiring astronauts worldwide. Virgin Galactic, founded by visionary entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, is at the forefront of this revolution. The company’s mission is to make space accessible to nonprofessional astronauts. In July 2021, Branson himself journeyed to the edge of space aboard Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, marking a significant milestone in democratising space travel.

The journey begins at Spaceport America in New Mexico, where passengers undergo several days of training and preparation. They are briefed on the mission, familiarise themselves with the spacecraft, and experience flight simulations. This preparation ensures all participants are ready for the physical and mental demands of space travel.

The SpaceShipTwo, carried aloft by the mothership VMS Eve, climbs to around 50,000 feet before being released for its rocket-powered ascent. As the rocket engine ignites, passengers experience exhilarating G-forces as the spacecraft accelerates toward space. Upon reaching the edge of space, approximately 80 kilometres above Earth, the engine shuts down, and passengers experience the awe-inspiring sensation of weightlessness. They float freely in zero gravity, gazing out at the breathtaking curvature of the Earth and the infinite blackness of space.

Source: https://www.virgingalactic.com/

While the experience of zero gravity is a central attraction, the journey offers much more. Passengers return with a renewed perspective on our planet, often referred to as the "overview effect." This phenomenon is a cognitive shift in awareness, where the beauty and fragility of Earth become profoundly apparent, inspiring a sense of connection and responsibility toward environmental stewardship. Space tourists contribute to the advancement of space travel, refining technologies and protocols, paving the way for future generations.

Virgin Galactic is not alone in making space tourism a reality. Companies like Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, and SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, are also making significant strides. Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket offers suborbital flights, while SpaceX aims to take private citizens on orbital and even lunar missions. The burgeoning space tourism industry is attracting significant investment, with projections suggesting it could become a multi-billion-dollar market within the next decade. As technology advances and competition increases, the cost of space travel is expected to decrease, making it more accessible.

While the promise of space tourism is exciting, it comes with challenges. Safety is paramount, and companies must ensure every aspect of the journey is meticulously planned and tested. The physical demands of space travel also require that passengers be in good health and undergo thorough medical evaluations.

Environmental concerns are also important, as the carbon footprint of rocket launches is significant. Companies are exploring ways to mitigate their impact, such as sustainable technologies and reusable spacecraft.

As we stand on the cusp of a new era in travel, the potential of space tourism is limitless. The pioneering efforts of companies like Virgin Galactic are making space more accessible, transforming it from a distant dream into an achievable reality. For those who dare to venture beyond the horizon, the journey promises an extraordinary adventure and a profound shift in perspective.

Space tourism is more than just a thrilling ride; it is a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of exploration. As we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, the dream of space travel will inspire and unite people, fostering a deeper appreciation for our planet and the vast universe beyond.

LIFE AFTER GLORY Athletes’ Struggle with Finding Purpose After Sport

What happens when the final whistle blows, the last race is run, and the spotlight fades? For countless athletes, the transition from the world of elite sport to everyday life can be a daunting and disorienting challenge

For many Australian athletes, the path to greatness is long and arduous, marked by dedication, discipline, and sacrifice. From the electrifying cheers of packed stadiums to the highs of victory, the life of a professional athlete is exhilarating. However, what happens when the final whistle blows?

For countless athletes, the transition from elite sport to everyday life is daunting, fraught with identity struggles, mental health issues, and the search for a new sense of purpose. The identity of a professional athlete is often deeply intertwined with their sport. When retirement comes, whether through age, injury, or choice, this identity can be abruptly stripped away, leaving a void that is difficult to fill.

Take the story of Anna Meares, one of Australia’s most decorated cyclists. After a stellar career with multiple Olympic medals and world championships, Meares faced a profound identity crisis upon retirement. She has spoken candidly about the struggle to redefine herself outside the velodrome and find new passions and purposes to replace competitive cycling.

The end of a sporting career can also trigger significant mental health challenges. Depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation are common among retired athletes. The high of competition and camaraderie are often replaced by a sense of loss and loneliness. The lack of routine and physical activity can further exacerbate these feelings.

While some athletes retire with significant earnings and endorsements, many do not. Financial planning for life after sport is crucial yet often overlooked. Athletes who have devoted their lives to training may find themselves ill-prepared for managing finances, seeking employment, or developing new career skills.

The AFL Players Association has devoted considerable resources to player development programs and transition. According to their report (Insights & Impact Report Edition 3), “…by focusing on both the professional growth within the sport and the personal development beyond the field, these programs aim to ensure athletes have the tools and support needed for a seamless transition into, during, and post their football careers.”

“Research indicates a critical need for players to engage more in post-football career exploration and preparation while still active in the league. A study by Rist et al. (2023) on the transition experiences of both AFL and AFLW players suggests that the extent of career exploration and the strength of athletic identity significantly influence the ease of transitioning to life after the sport. Both delisted AFL and AFLW players exhibited a stronger athletic identity compared to those retiring, indicating a more challenging and prolonged transition for this group.”

The case of AFL player Ben Cousins illustrates the perilous financial and personal challenges that can accompany retirement. Cousins’s post-retirement life has been marred by legal and financial troubles, highlighting the importance of robust financial planning and career transition programs for athletes.

Greg Inglis, a former NRL superstar, has been open about his battle with depression following his retirement from rugby league. Inglis’s transition highlighted the importance of mental health support for athletes during this critical period, underscoring the need for comprehensive mental health programs tailored specifically to former athletes.

Swimmer Ian Thorpe, a five-time Olympic gold medalist, has found purpose in his advocacy work, particularly in mental health and LGBTQ+ rights. By channelling his influence into causes he is passionate about, Thorpe has successfully navigated life after elite sport. Recognising the unique challenges faced by retiring athletes, various organisations and programs provide support. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) offers a comprehensive Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement program to assist athletes in managing their careers, education, mental health, and post-sport transition. These programs aim to equip athletes with the tools and resources they need to navigate life beyond the sporting arena.

Former test cricketer Shane Watson has been an advocate for such programs, emphasising the importance of preparing athletes for retirement well before they hang up their boots. Watson’s involvement in player welfare initiatives highlights the need for proactive measures to support athletes in finding new pathways and fulfilling post-sport careers.

The journey of an athlete doesn’t end with retirement; it merely enters a new phase, one that can be just as challenging as their competitive career. The struggle to find purpose after sport is complex, encompassing identity, mental health, financial stability, and the search for new career.

By acknowledging these challenges and providing comprehensive support, we can help our athletes transition successfully into the next chapter of their lives, ensuring that their legacy of dedication, resilience, and excellence continues to inspire long after the final whistle.

RESTORING SIGHT AROUND AUSTRALIA AND THE WORLD

Four years after he was diagnosed with cancer, and realising he didn’t have long to live, Fred and Gabi Hollows decided they needed to find a way to continue his work preventing blindness in indigenous Australia and developing countries.

Since its inception at the Hollows’ dining table in 1992, the Fred Hollows Foundation has restored sight to more than three million people worldwide. The Foundation’s mission is to end avoidable blindness in areas where it’s prevalent, while support the development of sustainable eye health systems.

Fred put it simply: ‘It’s obscene to let people go blind when they don’t have to.’ Today there are 43 million people in the world who are blind – but 9 out of 10 don’t need to be. In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults are three times more likely to go blind than other Australians, but 94% of their vision loss is preventable or treatable.

Australia’s the only developed country where the infectious eye disease trachoma remains endemic. Trachoma is the chronic inflammation of the eye lining and eyelids, which if left untreated can cause irreversible blindness.

The Foundation’s programs extend across Australia, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific and its initiatives include surgeries, provision of glasses, diabetic retinopathy screening, trachoma elimination, and training local healthprofessionals.

It also focuses on increasing access to eye care services among marginalised and underserved communities such as remote areas, refugees, and people with disabilities.

The Foundation uses a holistic approach to eye health care through active community engagement, capacity building of local health professionals, and local government partnerships to ensure program sustainability.

In 2021, the Foundation screened more than three million people, performed 330,184 eye operations and treatments, treated more than 16 million people with antibiotics for trachoma, trained 51,405 people including surgeons, nurses, and teachers, educated more than 1.4 million children and community members in eye health and sanitation, and built, renovated, or equipped 1451 medical facilities, training centres, and schools.

One of the Foundation’s most notable successes is its work in Nepal, a country with high rates of vision impairment.

Fred befriended and trained Nepali doctor Sanduk Ruit and together with friends and colleagues started the Nepal Eye Program Australia. They also established the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu, now recognised worldwide as a centre of excellence for eye health. Their combined efforts have helped to reduce cataract blindness in Nepal by 70% and restored the sight of over 120,000 people since 1994.

A project to eliminate trachoma in Vietnam is another Foundation success story. In the 1990s, trachoma was the country’s leading cause of blindness. It’s now on track for elimination in Vietnam, thanks to the Foundation’s collaboration with other NGOs and the Vietnamese government. The Foundation has also partnered with the CSIRO to explore how AI can be integrated into diabetic retinopathy care in Vietnam, to reduce screening costs and increase screening and treatment coverage.

The impact of the Fred Hollows Foundation’s work can’t be overstated. For many, sight restoration has meant a return to independent life. For instance, take Central Australian artist Evelyn Pultara, who suffered from cataracts. If untreated, she would’ve gone permanently blind. After her operation, she wanted to see her grandchildren clearly and looked forward to painting again as well as passing her skills on to her grandchildren.

Similarly, in Nepal, Sudip, a newly married young man who’d never seen his wife’s face clearly, regained his sight after undergoing cataract surgery. Like so many others, the Foundation’s intervention changed his life and his family’s future.

In 2023, the Foundation is continuing the spirit of Fred’s ethos through the Humanity Awards and the Fred Awards. The Humanity Awards recognise Australian Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by demonstrating kindness, compassion, and integrity. In conjunction, the Fred Awards will recognise adults who live by these same values. Submissions for the awards opened on 3 April 2023.

The Foundation’s focus on community engagement, capacity - building, and collaboration with local stakeholders has made it possible to achieve sustainable results. Its accomplishments offer hope and inspiration, demonstrating the power of kindness, compassion, and integrity to make a significant difference to the lives of many.
