In April’s edition I wrote about visiting Photo London which is a large exhibition held at Somerset House for a few days in May. Obviouslyphotography is the main art form on display but there are many sculptures, videos, projections, multimedia pieces and installations as well.

I’ve visited this annual event a few times now and it always inspires me in several ways. Firstly, I see classic photographs which I am familiar with but have only viewed in books, magazines or online. Photo London

displays some original prints or prints made from original negatives where the fine detail, which can sometimes be lost in copies or magazine reprints, can be clearly seen. Secondly, I discover many photographers and installation artists from all over the world for the first time including established or up and coming talents. This year I was particularly captivated by the astounding colour images by African photographers such as Saidou Dicko, Derrick Ofosu Boateng and the truly wonderful Thandiwe Muriu who celebrates her Kenyan roots by using the rich colours and vibrancy the African continent is renowned for. I recommend that you visit her website but be prepared to have your retinas scorched by the ultra vibrant colours ! www.thandiwemuriu.com Thirdly, I am always interested to see the latest work being produced by contemporary favourites such as Nick Knight and Richard Ansett. Richard was represented this year by the

Lucy Bell Gallery which can be found in St Leonards just an hours drive or train journey along the coast. A gallery that I have enjoyed visiting several times over recent years. I hope my photographs on this page capture a little of the atmosphere of last month’s event. If you would like to be added to my mailing list, please email me: steveboylephotos@gmail.com
