Summer Fiesta
his teenage sister. Dad Nate (Owen Wilson) rounds out the family. In Jacob Tremblay’s film with a big heart, themes of compassion, acceptance and kindness sound loud and clear. Cert PG, duration 113 mins. Tuesday 26th July, 2.00 pm. Tickets available from Box Office or on-line, £5.
A SUMMER FILM FESTIVAL offering VICTOR VICTORIA The last festival film is in the evening slot: a marvellous mixture of genders, a blatant attack on sexual attitudes that is both challenging and hilarious. Down on their luck in 1934 Paris, struggling soprano Victoria Grant (Julie Andrews) and gay cabaret singer ‘Toddy’ Todd (Robert Preston) hatch a scheme to pass her off as female impersonator Count Victor Grazinski. They will become successful, rich and famous. However, Chicago club owner King Marchand (James Garner) begins to fall for him/her, much to the dismay of his ditzy blonde lover and his macho bodyguard. Driven by a fantastic lead turn from Julie Andrews, this twisted musical comedy where a woman pretends to be a man impersonating a woman deals with transvestism and sexual identity. The genre that had been a cosy form of family entertainment became stereotypically synonymous with homosexuality. Blake Edwards, director, chose to stress the gay element in his sharp, funny and entertaining romp. Cert 15, duration 132 mins. Wednesday 27th July, 7.30 pm. Tickets available from Box Office or on-line, £7.
