Dating life pre-It’s Just Lunch?

Erik: I mainly met women through friends and work associates. It was always awkward and hit or miss. Danielle: I had been divorced for a few years and was trying to figure out how to get back into the dating world. The online thing was not what I wanted to do, and not the caliber of men I was looking for. A friend of mine met her husband through It’s Just Lunch so I decided to give it a try.

It's Just Lunch.indd 1

Challenges of re-entering the dating scene? E: The rules had changed. It’s a part-time job and too much work to meet someone online. I wanted to meet someone face-to-face right off the bat. My time is valuable and I didn’t want to waste it getting to know someone in the virtual world only to realize “this isn’t going to work out”. D: I was out of the singles scene for a couple years. I liked It’s Just Lunch because it was a commitment to “I’m going to take that step and venture out.”

Benefits of working with a matchmaker? D: As you get older, it’s harder to meet people. I was surrounded by married people. The matchmakers introduce you to people you wouldn’t normally meet in your day-to-day life. That’s what I absolutely loved about it. I also love their feedback process after every date. You feel like you’re

Particular challenges of being an entrepreneur and dating? E: Being a business owner, my schedule is always full. My office manager turned me onto It’s Just Lunch. She sat down in my office and said, “You have to start dating and meeting some new people. It’s Just Lunch is the dating service that I wish I had gone through.” So I called and signed on as a member. My matchmaker made it so easy for me to meet new women. She set everything up. pressure on yourself. The only question you should be asking yourself on a first date is: “Do I want to see this person again?” instead of the stressinducing “Could I see myself married to him/her?” CHEMISTRY Determining if there is chemistry on a first date is extremely important according to the singles we talked to. Gary’s Greeting

The Magic of ‘And’ One of our Employees recently asked me, “What’s more important: the brain or the heart?” It’s an interesting question, and I found myself thinking about it in terms of operating an airline. With more than 58,000 Employees, 750 airplanes, more than 100 destinations, and 4,000 daily flights, our business is incredibly complex. I think of our daily operation as the heart, and the commercial side of the business as the brain. They are both equally important, which is where the magic of “and” comes in.

Our No. 1 priority is to deliver you to your destination safely, ontime, and with a smile. From marshaling the aircraft into the gate and loading baggage, to fueling and provisioning the aircraft, it takes a tremendous amount of Teamwork to operate just one flight. When you also consider our airport Employees who process tickets, check luggage, facilitate boarding, and fulfill various “above the wing” duties, it becomes even more impressive. And that doesn’t even begin to encompass the enormous

responsibilities of our Pilots and Flight Attendants. What you don’t see is everything that takes place behind the scenes to make the above possible—building a flight schedule, managing seat inventory, performing regular maintenance, dispatching our flights, and the many back-office functions that support these efforts. Our Customers tell us that the two most important factors they consider when purchasing an airline ticket are the price and the schedule. The airline business is extremely competitive, and if we don’t deliver on those two things, chances are another airline will. We constantly optimize our schedule to offer the most convenient flight times to the best destinations. As you can see, the commercial function of our airline is as important as the daily operation. From our inception, Southwest® has believed that if we offer the best Customer Service at the lowest price, we will be successful. Thus, the magic of “and” is at work in just about everything we do. On behalf of all our Employees, it’s an honor and a privilege to work a little Southwest magic for you today.

Community Outreach

FUTURE LEADERS

A Good Cause

Southwest® supports future leaders in the Asian Pacific American community. At Southwest Airlines®, we believe that empowering young professionals in the communities we serve is an important step in helping those communities thrive. We take great pride in partnering with groups that support this goal, including the Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment. Based in Los Angeles, CAUSE is a nonprofit organization with a mission of advancing the political and civic empowerment of the Asian Pacific American community through nonpartisan voter outreach, training, education, and leadership development. Since partnering with the nonprofit in 2008, Southwest has supported the CAUSE Leadership Academy, a nine-week, paid internship program for undergraduates that prepares the next generation to lead and represent the APA community. With Southwest’s support, CLA interns have been able to attend the annual summit at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. At the conference, students learn the importance of civic engagement and political participation through mock committee

hearings, speaker panels, and meetings with top legislators, staffers, and lobbyists. At the beginning of 2019, Southwest announced that CAUSE was one of 24 organizations chosen to receive funding from our charitable grant program. CAUSE plans to use the grant money to ensure internship placements in the nonprofit and government sectors for future CLA participants. “We are so grateful and excited to have Southwest’s support of this program. As a proud CLA alumnus myself, I know firsthand the degree of impact this program has on fueling the dreams and passions of our next generation,” says Kim Yamasaki, executive director of CAUSE. “With their support, we are showing young adults that it is not only possible, but also necessary, to take on leadership positions in order to ensure that the needs and voices of our community are brought to the forefront of the decision-making process.” As Southwest celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month throughout May, we are thrilled to honor CAUSE. —Kim Delevett, Community Affairs & Grassroots

She Said Yes

I recently heard about the DAL Customer Service Team helping Customer Johnross Reyes propose to his girlfriend, Tracy Nguyen, in the art gallery at Dallas Love Field Airport. Ken Jinbo and Nicholas Crossland escorted Johnross and a photographer to the gallery, where they met up with Carlos Walker and hatched a plan. Tracy arrived at the gate and was informed that she had been randomly chosen as the Surprise and Delight Customer of the day. This allowed Carlos and Ayanna Perkins to escort her to the gallery without raising suspicion. Carlos signaled Ken over the radio to let him know they were on the way with Tracy. Still under the guise of the Surprise and Delight program, Ken greeted Tracy outside the gallery with a bouquet of flowers and invited her to step inside. By the time she realized something was going on, Johnross came around the corner and popped the question. The photographer was able to capture everything, including Tracy’s response—she said yes! —Maggie Hamilton, Culture Engagement Specialist

THE GIFT OF COUR AGE

A LIFELONG FRIENDSHIP

We had a family of four on a return flight from California to Houston, and the youngest child, a 3-year-old boy, refused to board the plane because of his fear of flying. The father came onboard to inform his wife that he was going to have to take a bus back to Houston because their son would not get on the aircraft. The Captain and several Operations Agents tried to convince the young boy to get on the plane to no avail. Flight Attendant Kristina Fink then asked if she could try talking to the boy. At this point, the flight was fully boarded, so I informed everyone onboard of the situation. As soon as I made the announcement, Kristina and the boy walked onboard holding hands. The whole plane clapped and cheered, which was a really magical moment. When I asked her how she did it, she said, “I just asked him to fly with me, and it worked!” Kristina truly embodies the Southwest Spirit. —Mark Martin, Flight Attendant

Many years ago, Executive Assistant Hollye Gaman started a long-distance friendship with Scott, a Customer who has special needs and lives in a Houston group home. The friendship began when Hollye responded to one of Scott’s letters and the two became pen pals. In addition to writing each other regularly, they occasionally talk on the phone. Hollye also used her personal Employee points to fly him, a friend, and a caregiver to Dallas to spend the day at Southwest Headquarters. Hollye arranged for the group to take a tour of the Network Operations Control, and even threw Scott a birthday party, as the trip to HDQ coincided with his 50th birthday. I’m amazed by Hollye’s Servant’s Heart and her friendship with this Customer. I want to thank her for going above and beyond to make him feel so loved by his friends at Southwest Airlines! —Caroline Garza, Awards & Recognition Coordinator

Dear Editor,

I was flying to San Antonio when I read Matt Crossman’s article about Herb Kelleher [“Forever Herb,” March 2019]. I grew up in Dallas and had many friends who went to work for Southwest. When I read Matt’s article, it made me laugh. And it made me cry. And it made me want to connect with others the way Herb did. I brought the magazine with me and shared the article with many of my colleagues so that they too could immerse themselves in the life and joy of Herb. There is only one Southwest Airlines and only one Herb! Thank you for sharing this delightful man with the rest of us. Charlotte Youngquist SAN ANTONIO

/ It means a lot that you felt compelled to share Herb’s story with your co-workers. You can also find the full article on our website at southwestmag.com/herb-kelleher. HEARTFELT TRIBUTE

I’ve been to a few funerals for people whom I didn’t know personally. After listening to the heartfelt stories and spirited

anecdotes told in their eulogies, I’ve often been enlightened by what I’ve heard. That’s how I felt after reading Matt Crossman’s article about Herb Kelleher from

/ We felt the only way to honor

Herb’s memory was to share stories from the people who knew him best. HERB HUMOR

“Forever Herb” was the best inflight magazine article I’ve ever read. I particularly enjoyed Herb’s response when [former Southwest Airlines president] Colleen Barrett said that he was the best servantleader she had ever met. He replied, “What the hell is that?” At first, I chuckled at his apparent question, but then as I thought about it, I realized it was more likely a statement. Could it be that, to Herb Kelleher, being a servant wasn’t a pathway to leadership, but rather to service itself? Given his life

F2_feedback_MG.indd 28 23 and ME.indd 1

spent serving others, I suppose it was the latter.

Bret Bernhardt ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA

/ Bret, we got a kick out of reading Herb stories too. For a man in such an esteemed position, he certainly never lost his sense of humor. POWERFUL WORDS

Not often do I read an article that is so well-written, but Matt Crossman’s writing style was so engaging that it took me through myriad emotions as I read about Herb Kelleher’s life. I want to thank Matt for taking the time to not just write, but to move people.

Kit Gallini MANSFIELD, TEXAS

/ The best writers know how to

take you on a journey, and Matt did just that. INTERVIEW OF A LIFETIME

I just read Matt Crossman’s fantastic tribute to Herb. I was sorry it had to end. When I was a reporter

for the Dallas Business Journal in 1991, I got a one-on-one interview with Herb in his office. It was magical. He moved around the office constantly, and a cigarette and lighter were always within reach. Instead of calling someone to escort me out after the interview ended, Herb walked me out himself—and stopped a half-dozen times to hug and kiss employees. Thanks for the stories.

Sean M. Wood SAN ANTONIO

/ One of the best things about this

tribute is that it’s spurred even more Herb stories. Thanks for sharing your memories with us, Sean. EARLY MORNING ENCOURAGEMENT

I read Matt Crossman’s tribute to Herb in the March issue of Southwest: The Magazine. I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed learning about this great man—a man whom I never had the pleasure of meeting, although Matt’s

great way to kick off the day, especially if you want to start it with a good laugh. THE HERB WAY

I never write in about articles I read in magazines, but Matt Crossman’s tribute to Herb Kelleher was so wonderfully written that I had to say thank you. Matt has an incredible talent for creating an emotional appreciation of what Mr. Kelleher brought to this world. Reading this article gave me a sense of hope that simple decency and caring still make a difference. I hope this article encourages people to do things the Herb way.

THE SOUTHWEST SPIRIT

I’m on a flight from Philadelphia to Nashville, Tennessee, as I draft this email. I’ve spent the bulk of my adult life professionally attached, in one way or another, to the aviation industry. I’ve been a loyal customer of Southwest Airlines for years, simply because of the attitude that seems to radiate from every Southwest employee I’ve ever met. Over the years, I often thought about dropping by Southwest’s headquarters in Dallas, just to introduce myself to Mr. Kelleher. I’d shake his hand and then thank him for the spirited people who have served my air-travel needs so well. While I never had the opportunity to meet the man, Matt Crossman beautifully encapsulated his spirit in the “Forever Herb” article.

Randy J. Africano CHICAGO

/ Herb’s business philosophy was to hire for attitude rather than experience, so he’d be proud to know his

legacy lives on through his beloved Southwest employees. SEEN ON SOCIAL

Why am I laughing and crying while reading about Herb Kelleher in the in-flight magazine of my Southwest flight?! He was so cool. @SHARKYSHARK19

Great article—studied his brilliance in a business class at UT San Antonio! His triangle on a napkin idea always stuck with me all these years. RIP, Mr. Kelleher. JAVIER GONZALEZ

I read [this] on one of my flights this month. I always love the issues but this one was super sweet. Wish I could’ve met Herb. @DEBINPDX

The reasons we ditch parts of our wardrobe can vary, but the research found that clothes often get tossed because we aren’t properly caring for them. “People over-wash their things a lot, so always look at the tag and resist that urge to throw something in the hamper just because you wore it once,” Trunk Club brand communications manager Caroline Mattingly says. Where some see a classic potluck staple, others see a blank canvas. Since opening Mortar & Pestle in Chicago in 2015, executive chef Stephen Ross has dreamed up nearly 100 kinds of deviled eggs— with no repeats, mind you. Bites change weekly, or every other week, depending on seasonal ingredients and popularity. Past toppings include fried shrimp chips and freeze-dried corn. A take on a Chicagostyle hot dog, complete with green relish and celery seed, was a fan favorite. “I see the basic premise of the deviled egg as an opportunity to be creative with ingredients that might not be commonplace for a brunch concept,” Ross says. Rest assured, you’ll find no bad eggs here.

Rosemary Grapefruit Drop In Seattle, everyone knows Ray’s Boathouse. “It’s been here for four decades, so there’s a ton of history,” says spirits manager Darla Marchi. “Chances are, if you’ve lived in Seattle, you or someone in your family have worked here.” Tourists also know to come for the waterfront views, which you can take in at either of Ray’s dual concepts: the upscale seafood restaurant downstairs, and the down-to-earth café and bar upstairs. Wherever you’re sitting at this Ballard neighborhood institution, order a Rosemary Grapefruit Drop. The combination of Deep Eddy Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, lemon juice, and rosemary syrup is simple, delicious, and well-balanced. And, like Ray’s, it’s a favorite of both locals and visitors.

MAKE IT → In a tin, combine 2 ounces Deep Eddy Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, ¾ ounce lemon juice, and ¾ ounce rosemary simple syrup*. Shake and strain into a cosmopolitan glass. Line half the rim with sugar. Garnish with a lemon peel. *Combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and ¼ cup rosemary leaves in a saucepan. Boil until sugar dissolves, and then let sit for about 30 minutes. Strain to remove the rosemary sprigs.

Melinda Gates

Don’t be afraid to embrace imperfections, says the author and philanthropist.

Whenever you head into a meeting, you obviously need to know your material, but I realized early on that, like so many women, I have a perfectionist streak. I thought I needed to have every single detail stored in my head, but that meant I couldn’t listen as well to what others were saying. Whereas now, if I bring my whole self—imperfections and all—maybe I’ll miss a number here or there, or someone will ask me something that I have to look up later, but that’s OK. We don’t have to be perfect, and listening is key to how we learn.

OUT TAKES DOES NOT COMPUTE The number of women graduating with computer science degrees has gone down since I was in college. We need more women with seats at the table, creating companies and making decisions on what’s going into products.

ROLE MODEL I would have loved to have met Mother Teresa. If you go back and read her letters, she had a ton of doubt, and yet she started somewhere. Get Gates’ new book, The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World, out now.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PIVOTAL VENTURES

TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE DATING MORE COMPLICATED & IMPERSONAL. HIRING A MATCHMAKER MIGHT BE THE ANSWER...

BREAKING UP WITH ONLINE DATING

A

t first, Larry Chiarelli, director at a tech start up, thought he was doing all he needed. Sign up on multiple dating websites. Meet lots of women. Eventually, the right one would come along – except she never did. So he decided to bring in the professionals and hired It’s Just Lunch. It’s Just Lunch’s matchmakers got to know him and his preferences. They selected his dates, arranged schedules, and even made the restaurant reservations. Dating became stress-free and fun. Larry was a practical guy and didn’t believe in love-at-first-sight… until IJL introduced him to Ping.

¤ ¤

Dating life before joining It’s Just Lunch? Lawrence: Chaotic! I was meeting a lot of women but not the right women for me. Online dating was time consuming and stressful. I needed someone to relieve me of the dating busy work so I could get some breathing room. I needed to slow things down to speed them up. It’s Just Lunch fit that criteria perfectly.

8 0 0.858.6 526

It's Just Lunch.indd 2

Why join It’s Just Lunch? Ping: I fly frequently for both work and fun. When I saw It’s Just Lunch in the airline magazine, it was as if the matchmaker was talking to me! One day after a particularly long flight and wanting to snuggle with someone and watch a movie, I decided it couldn’t hurt to give it a try.

Most enjoyable part of the It’s Just Lunch process?

I’d call back, get the details and run through my availability. The next thing I knew I was in front of an interesting woman having a great conversation.

L: I tell my clients an analogy all the time: Would you rather drive across the country in a Toyota Corolla or a BMW 5 series? They always say the 5 series. You get what you pay for. Investing in yourself and your future with someone special means investing in the right matchmaking service. For me that was It’s Just Lunch.

L: Easy and convenient. The company I was working for was going through a merger so I was away from home quite a bit. I’d finish my day and there would be a message from my matchmaker telling me about my next match.

The success of It’s Just Lunch is built on creating high quality matches in low pressure situations. In 27 years, they’ve set up millions of first dates. Make meeting someone special a priority. Get in touch at 800-858-6526 or www.itsjustlunch.com.

Forget color chips and endless shades of white. This is paint shopping, pain-free. Here’s how founder Nicole Gibbons describes the online paint company: One thing I observed as an interior designer was that paint shopping is a terrible experience for people who aren’t designers. It usually starts in a big-box store, staring at a wall of 3,000 colors. It’s a long, overwhelming process, and I wanted to build an online paint company that simplified the experience and focused on better ingredient choices. Clare removes stress by offering a curated color selection, delivering right to your door, and bundling

everything else you need to paint. We even solved for the sampling component with peel-and-stick swatches. If you have no clue where to start, you can answer questions through our online Clare Color Genius—like how much natural light your space gets or what colors are already in your home—and we’ll recommend colors. We’re not just a paint startup; we’re pioneers of a new model and new way to buy paint. Because at the end of the day, we are selling paint, but our true mission is to help people create beautiful homes.

Small

When we dream up our annual summer travel guides, we usually think big—big trips, big excursions, big ideas—from attending surf camp in Costa Rica to snorkeling with whale sharks in the Caribbean. This year, though, we’re thinking small. We’re celebrating 10 tiny towns across the country, places with populations under 12,000 that show how less really can mean more: more charm, more community, more moments to slow down and connect with what’s around us. So leave behind those big-city plans and turn down roads less traveled. by melissa flandreau 46 southwest may 2019

Fredericksburg, Texas

A “Hauptstrasse” stands in for Main Street in this Hill Country hideaway, which was founded by German immigrants in 1845. Those roots remain essential to Fredericksburg, from the schnitzel at Der Lindenbaum to the Bavarian brews at the annual Oktoberfest. Fredericksburg’s terrain has also made it a hot spot for vineyards—in fact, vino lovers can visit 19 wineries along Wine Road 290, a 45mile stretch of highway running from Fredericksburg to Johnson City. (Put Grape Creek Vineyard’s cabernet-merlot blend, Bellissimo, at the top of your to-drink list.) Don’t have sommelier aspirations? There’s still plenty to do. History buffs will love the National Museum of the Pacific War, while outdoor enthusiasts can hit the trails at Enchanted Rock, a pink granite batholith 18 miles from town. Round out your romantic getaway by booking a cozy cottage at Cotton Gin Village.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

Come summer, the population of this Cape Cod destination swells. But despite the influx of visitors to America’s oldest active art colony, P-town’s allure remains. Known for its strong LGBTQ community and pristine stretch of shoreline, Provincetown blends small-town friendliness with a variety of things to do. Start with a stroll down Commercial Street, the bustling 3-mile main drag dotted with galleries, boutiques, and eateries. Pop into the nofrills Provincetown Portuguese Bakery for a malasada, and then make the walk to the Provincetown Art Association and Museum for a taste of local culture. Adventure seekers can tour the sand dunes at Cape Cod National Seashore or check out the historic Race Point Lighthouse. Stay at 8 Dyer Hotel, where the seven rooms are cozy and breakfast features homemade granola, plus java from local purveyor George Howell Coffee.

What does small-town community look like? In 2008, Rick and Jennie Schmitt and Blake and Marci Brooks set out to restore Frankfort’s historic Garden Theater. When the team asked Michael Fitzhugh for help, the architect, who grew up in Frankfort, took on the project pro bono. Today, the theater hosts the Frankfort Film Festival and epitomizes small-town heart. After a flick, hit the links at Crystal Downs Country Club, or head to nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. In town, Victorian houses dot the streets, and a beer scene’s brewing. Sip a Belgian-style ale at Stormcloud Brewing Co., blocks from Frankfort Beach.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

It’s hard to miss Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach’s 235-foot centerpiece. But fans of The Goonies might recognize it for a reason beyond its size: Portions of the classic ’80s flick were filmed by the sea stack. Besides serving as a movie backdrop, this seaside town is home to stunning Ecola State Park and boasts an exciting food and drink scene. Bring your fishing pole. After dinner at Rod & Reel Pier, you can cast off the dock for a small fee.

Nestled on the northern part of its namesake island, this relaxed oceanfront town has all the elements of a Sunshine State stunner: sunset views on Bean Point Beach, brightly colored vacation cottages, and oceanfront dining at Rod & Reel Pier (try the coconut-crusted mahimahi). Sea turtles, which can be spotted May through October, also enhance the experience. And although the barrier island’s iconic pier was demolished last year after damage done by Hurricane Irma in 2017, a new structure is in the works and will open in 2020. As an added bonus, Anna Maria Island is home to two other vibrant small towns. Visit The Feast Restaurant in Holmes Beach, and shop along Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach. may 2019 southwest 51

Even a small town can provide a big slice of history. Known for its 19th-century architecture, Galena is dotted with carefully preserved homes, including the Ulysses S. Grant Home and the Greek Revival–style Old Market House. On the outskirts of town, Casper Bluff Land & Water Reserve’s effigy mounds—raised earth molded to resemble specific shapes, animals, and symbols—date back to A.D. 700. And even the accommodation options touch on the town’s legacy. Former guests at the DeSoto House Hotel, which was built in 1855, include notable names like Abraham Lincoln. But despite its ties to the past, Galena boasts a beverage scene that feels thoroughly modern. Sample the bourbon or moonshine at Blaum Bros. Distilling Co., branch out with the jalapeno-infused wine at Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery, or enjoy the award-winning Anna Belle’s IPA at Galena Brewing Company. In Colorado, finding a spot with easy access to outdoor activities isn’t exactly a tall task. But Lyons pairs its picturesque surroundings with healthy doses of culture and singular charm. Along with serving as a convenient gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, it’s home to Rabbit Mountain Open Space, where wildflowers bloom along the Rabbit Mountain Hiking Trail in the summer. Added elevation isn’t required for thrills, though; when the weather warms, LaVern M. Johnson Park offers whitewater rafting in the North St. Vrain Creek. When you’re ready to retreat indoors, try Lyons Fork’s famous truffle fries, or grab some housemade bread from St. Vrain Market. Lyons also touts an enviable music scene. Every year, crowds flock to RockyGrass Festival at Planet Bluegrass Ranch for toe-tapping tunes. This year, favorites like the Punch Brothers take the stage July 26–28.

Art abounds in this Southwestern desert gem, from the galleries surrounding Taos Plaza to the impressive museums. Taos Pueblo, too, provides a unique cultural experience. A living Native American community, it gives an in-depth look at traditions that are an essential part of the town’s past and present. Taos’ creativity also extends to its epicurean offerings and accommodations. Along with New Mexican staples like the pozole at The Alley Cantina, visitors can dig into Peruvian-Japanese fare at Aji Restaurant. And the eco-focused Earthships, which double as individual guesthouses, make for a truly out-there stay.

A Comeback to Remember Youth baseball teaches kids about winning and losing. One team, and one special season, taught a coach about something else: the importance of staying in the game. by flinder boyd

was a beautiful day for baseball. On a late afternoon last spring at Friendship Park in South Ogden, Utah, the red infield clay crunched with each step, and the sun sparkled off the nearby Wasatch Mountains. But despite the ideal weather, coach Curtis Breitweiser felt nervous—“half scared to death”—as he waited for the South Ogden A’s to arrive for their first practice. He hadn’t coached in more than a decade, and with no direct connection to any of the 9- and 10-year-old players, he wondered whether they would like him or respond to his teaching. Around town, the former insurance salesman, then 57, was known for his endearing smile and ever-ready nuggets of advice, but the past year had been the hardest of his life. In April 2017, his only son, J.D., took his own life at the age of 23. Breitweiser, his wife, Caron, and the couple’s three daughters tried to rally together, but the only time he felt any solace was when he was alone on his Harley-Davidson, or climbing majestic Ben Lomond Peak. When he decided to retire early, Caron suggested he take up a hobby.

“Why don’t you coach kids or something?” she asked. Breitweiser liked the idea. He had managed J.D.’s youth baseball team years earlier and hoped he could recreate happier times. As practice got underway, some kids were wearing basketball shoes. Others wore soccer shorts. One was using a plastic toy glove. At one point, Breitweiser told the team to meet at home plate. Confused, a few players sprinted to the dugout. In one drill, the boys formed two lines, 5 feet away from a partner, for some toss and catch, but even that was an adventure. may 2019 Southwest 57

4/4/19 5:17 PM

“It was horrible,” Breitweiser says. “They just had no concept.” The week before, the team had essentially been picked at random by Breitweiser at a league-wide draft. Few of the players knew one another, and no one knew him. Breitweiser ended practice early and gathered the team in a circle. “Listen, all I want is for you to have fun and hustle. Do we know what hustle means?” he asked. There was a smatter of yeses and an “I think so.” “Hustle means do your best.” The kids put their hands together in the middle of the circle. One … two … three … “Play hard and hustle!” they screamed. Of course, no one knew it then—not the parents, not the players, and certainly not Breitweiser—but they were about to embark on something special. For now, however, they were just a band of baseball misfits in need of some structure, and a lost middle-aged man in need of some direction.

efore the first game, against the team from South Weber, Breitweiser lined up the players to stretch in unison. They were decked out in matching gray pants and green South Ogden A’s tops. While other teams in the league were happy for their players to have one weekly practice, the A’s had gone through an intensive baseball boot camp, practicing every other day for three weeks. Luke, an undersized left fielder who wore glasses that were slightly too large for his face, learned not to sprint in the opposite direction of the ball. Corbin, the first baseman, stopped ducking every time a pitch was thrown. Gradually, the A’s worked up to the basics. For help, Breitweiser had taken on two parents as assistant coaches—Jordan Coffey, tall and spindly, with a quiet demeanor, and his best friend, Jason Muchmore, stout, fast-talking, and covered in tattoos. The pair met

B

when a teacher placed them side by side in junior high, and they’d been inseparable ever since. They now worked as electricians in the same office at Hill Air Force Base. The season before, Coffey and Muchmore had coached a team that included their sons, but, Coffey says, “It didn’t go well. We don’t know anything about baseball.” Over time, the team improved significantly. On the last day of boot camp, Breitweiser lined up the players in the same formation as the first practice—two rows of kids facing one another—and had them toss the ball back-and-forth. No one dropped it. Breitweiser saw a glimmer of hope. Against South Weber, he chose his shortest player, Brandon, as his starting pitcher. Painfully quiet, he had the best arm on the team, but Breitweiser had also noticed that he threw a bit like his own son. That seemed like a good omen. After three batters, though, Brandon had walked the bases loaded.

“Time!” Breitweiser yelled to the umpire and walked to the mound. “Are you OK?” he asked his pitcher. Brandon looked at his father, Jorge Bocaranda, who—along with his wife, Yamileth—was sitting in a lawn chair down the right field foul line, far away from the rest of the parents. Bocaranda had grown up around the game in Venezuela and perhaps knew more about baseball than anyone else at the field that day, but he didn’t like to be near adults he didn’t know. Twenty-five years earlier, he immigrated to Utah after coming for a short visit. He was so struck by the state’s beauty that he never left. Then, a few years later, while out one evening in Salt Lake City, he was assaulted. The experience scarred him. He moved his family to South Ogden, an economically diverse area, but in their part of town, they were the only Latino household. As Brandon grew, he inherited his father’s love of baseball, but also his resilience. Breitweiser kicked the dirt off the rubber, and Brandon retook the mound. Then he fired a strike, and then another, and another. He struck out three straight batters. In the bottom half of the inning, the A’s knocked the ball all over the field and eventually won, 7–3. The players did a victory lap around the bases, culminating with a team slide at home plate. The next game, the A’s won a thriller, 7–6, followed by a 9–0 shutout. By the fourth game, cousins and grandparents of the players were in the bleachers, Coffey says. Breitweiser’s sisters and parents, too. Breitweiser estimates the A’s would have as many as 50 people coming to games. “Winning was so awesome,” he says. The assistant coaches became more involved. Bocaranda inched closer and closer to the dugout until Breitweiser handed him a jersey and made him an unofficial third assistant coach. At work, Muchmore and Coffey

couldn’t stop talking about baseball. They’d debate the team’s ideal pitching matchups, or who should bat leadoff. If they were confused about any aspects of the game, like how to hit a cut-off man, they’d pull up how-to baseball videos at their desk. Their favorite pastime, however, was guessing the backstory of Breitweiser, a man who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere. By now, they trusted him, but they were still curious about their initial meeting. Breitweiser told them he decided to coach because he had some free time and then cryptically said he would “explain the rest later.” “Think he won the lottery?” Muchmore asked Coffey. “Is that why he has so much time to coach?” s the season progressed, the A’s remained undefeated. After each victory, Breitweiser would drive

to the cemetery where his son was buried. He’d sit next to J.D.’s tombstone and relive the team’s highlights. Brandon was turning into the best pitcher in the league; Luke had taken a ball to the face in the outfield, leaving him with a shiner, but he wasn’t running away. Breitweiser and J.D. had always been close. One summer before J.D. (short for James Don) started high school, Breitweiser took him on a road trip from Utah to Florida and back. Breitweiser was working on visiting every ballpark in the major leagues, and they went to seven stadiums during the trip. They stayed in dusty motels, and J.D. confided to his father that he dreamed of being a sports agent one day. The last ballpark they visited was Busch Stadium in St. Louis, and the two were randomly selected as “the fans of the game.” Their picture was put up on the scoreboard, and they were taken down to the VIP boxes where they were treated like celebrities. “It

was so cool,” Breitweiser recalls. “J.D. was like my best friend.” When J.D. died, Breitweiser’s life went into a cosmic tailspin, but coaching the A’s had given him some semblance of order. He built a routine around preparing for games, drilling the players, and texting the parents recaps after every practice. For a while, this fragility held. Then, one evening, he got an unexpected text from Coffey. In large part, Coffey had taken a coaching role to be more involved in his son’s life in a way he wished his own dad had been. Coffey’s father had recently been treated for colon cancer, and the two had been working on their relationship. Halfway through the season, Coffey’s father died of a heart attack. In the text to Breitweiser, Coffey briefly mentioned what happened and said he wouldn’t be at practice. A few days later, Breitweiser surprised Coffey by attending the viewing. Without mentioning his own son,

3/27/19 8:23 PM AM 4/4/19 5:18

19 8:23 AM

Breitweiser put his arm around Coffey and told him, “I know what you’re going through.” “He helped me get through it,” Coffey says. “He was the person that needed to be there.” Shortly after the funeral, the A’s played the team from Washington Terrace. It was a wild game. The A’s were up a run in the final inning when Washington Terrace’s second baseman overthrew first base. Corbin sprinted halfway to home plate, and then stopped when the opposing team’s manager ran onto the field, screaming at the umpire that the runner shouldn’t be allowed to advance. Breitweiser, usually mild-mannered, argued his case, but Corbin wasn’t allowed to score. The game eventually ended in a 9–9 tie. Before, every victory had felt to Breitweiser like a sign from above, a reconnection with J.D. But a tie felt empty, and all he could think about was the burden of his own secret. “I needed to tell the team and the parents why I was there.” he final game of the season was against the Riverdale Bees, the only other undefeated team in the league. The A’s would have to win to finish in first place. Before that game, Breit weiser organized a team celebration at a local park for families and friends. He grilled hot dogs, and near the end of the afternoon, he handed out awards and thanked the families and the kids for their dedication throughout the season. “The first practice, your kids couldn’t hit, couldn’t run. And look at them now,” Breitweiser said jokingly. Then he took a long pause. He wanted to tell them everything about J.D.—a sports aficionado who worked at Foot Locker and collected LeBron James signature sneakers, a senior at Weber State University studying economics, a loving son with a girlfriend he adored. But it was all too painful. Perhaps there was even a part of

T

him that wanted to tell them the things he couldn’t bear to think about: A week before J.D. was to graduate college, he killed himself in the Breitweisers’ home. There was no note. Maybe the only clue, which Breitweiser later discovered, was that J.D. was short a few credits to graduate. Whether or not this explained something, the family didn’t know. But the hardest part, Breitweiser says, is that J.D. never told him what was really going on. “In the end, I realized I was just his dad.” In front of the families, he turned his hat inside out and showed them the scrawled initials—J.D. “The real reason I did this was for the son that I lost,” he said, “to fill a void in my heart.” After Breitweiser spoke, the parents came up and hugged him, and the kids did what 9- and 10-year-olds do. They ran over and doused him with soda as if he’d won a championship. Even Bocaranda, so sensitive to contact,

Pet King Brands.indd 162 F2_Baseball_DE.indd

walked over to Breitweiser and gave him a hug. “He’s really special,” Bocaranda says. The entire team dedicated the final game, played back at Friendship Park, to J.D. However, when the game started, it was as if all of the team’s magic had evaporated. Brandon’s pitching was erratic, and the team struggled to make contact. Every game in the league had a one-hour time limit, and the A’s found themselves down two runs, with a half inning to bat before time expired. After a strikeout and a hit-bypitch, Brandon drew a walk. Another strikeout followed. With the A’s season down to its final out, Daniel, the team’s jokester but its best athlete, stepped to the plate. During the A’s boot camp, he hit the ball farther and ran faster than his teammates. However, once the season began, Daniel struggled. He would try too hard at the plate and became increasingly frustrated. Before the first pitch, Breitweiser

bent down to meet him at eye level. “I never ask my players for anything but to show up and try their best,” Breitweiser told him. “But, Daniel, I’m asking you to hit a home run.” Daniel nodded. He swung hard and missed the first two pitches. The A’s were down to their last strike. The pitch was delivered … And, of course, you can guess what happened next. Daniel cracked the ball over the first baseman’s head, past the right fielder, and into the corner. The two base runners scored, and then Daniel crossed the plate. An inside-the-park home run. Final: A’s 7, Bees 6. Maybe it was just a kids’ game in a league that didn’t officially name a champion, but if you looked around the field that day, you would have seen pure elation— parents jumped up and down; kids ran around the bases and slid into home together; Coffey and Bocaranda, who had found healing in the comforts of the team, joined

the dogpile; and then there was Breitweiser. For 10 weeks, he had taken on 11 sons and an extended family he never knew he needed. He stood back against the dugout railing with a satisfied grin. He then handed the players medals he’d had specially made, inscribed with the team’s name. The players put their hands together and, one last time, screamed, “Play hard and hustle!” The kids ate their snacks and, one by one, headed to the parking lot with their parents. Breitweiser lingered. When the last car had finally pulled away, he soaked in the moment alone. “And just like that,” he says, “it was over.” he next day, the adults went to work and the kids went to school. The triumphs and disappointments of everyday life followed. Luke was more confident in class. Brandon tried out

T

for the school play, and his dad was becoming more open. Bocaranda signed up to house two Venezuelan minor leaguers playing for the local Class A team, the Ogden Raptors. “I really liked it,” he says. For others, the season left a void. Coffey and Muchmore had no more games to distract them, and Coffey says, “I kind of went into a funk.” The kids felt it, too. One day, Daniel, the home run hero, heard that Breitweiser might be visiting a home nearby. Hoping to catch a glimpse of him, Daniel grabbed his bike and snuck outside, but he never saw his coach. “He’s my family,” Daniel says. “I wanted to see him.” Breitweiser, meanwhile, looked for more ways to connect with others. He signed up to chair a committee at his alma mater, and he agreed to serve on the board of a nonprofit, MECKA, that aims to help kids overcome struggles that can lead to suicide. He and his wife even bought tickets to go to

Europe. At times, he thought about emailing the parents and checking in, but then he’d get cold feet. “What was I going to say?” he says. It wasn’t until he ran into the Bocarandas at a Raptors game that he realized how much he missed the team. The memories and the feelings flooded back. This spring, when the new season rolled around, Breitweiser called Coffey, Muchmore, and Bocaranda, and they signed up to coach together in the 11- and 12-year-old division. Because of league rules, they wouldn’t have the same team, but that was OK. For Breitweiser, the magical season had given him a life he thought he’d never have again. “I’ve tried not to let J.D.’s death define me,” he says. “That team could never replace him, but they taught me it’s OK to smile. It’s OK to be happy.” Flinder Boyd is a freelance writer in Los Angeles. Email him at flinder. boyd@gmail.com.

Jacksonville In this diverse corner of Florida, you’ll find urban bustle, small-town charm, and outdoor adventure. BY MILES HOWARD

“Duval!” at the top of his lungs. It’s a battle cry. It’s game day, and fans are preparing to cheer on their beloved Jags. (Jacksonville is located in Duval County, so this exclamation is also a point of orientation for visitors.) There’s something disarmingly sweet about the way the guy in the truck greeted me, and the presumption that I, too, must be heading to the game. He’s right. My first stop on a three-day trip to Jacksonville is to see the Jaguars play on their home field. I already knew that football was something people enjoyed here. But as more cars and trucks

monster steel-gray Toyota Tacoma is catching up to me fast. It’s a broiling Sunday morning, and I’m driving along the interstate just outside of Jacksonville. I had been admiring the tall slash pine trees that flank the highway just before the truck roared up from behind. I quickly move over to let it pass. And that’s when I notice the flags flapping in the breeze. The truck is festooned with miniature teal banners bearing the unmistakable insignia of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the city’s NFL team. And as the truck passes, the windows roll down and a grinning middle-aged man with wraparound shades and festively spiked hair leans out and offers me a brief brotherly fist pump before shouting

The home of the Jaguars

Before Hollywood On a bone-dry day in 1901, an inferno consumed Jacksonville. The city, which served as an outpost for shipping hogs and cattle during the Civil War but had since become known as a growing resort haven for the well-heeled, was in the middle of a drought. In less than 24 hours, the fire incinerated hundreds of wooden houses, destroying more than 140 city blocks and leaving thousands homeless. It was the end of the world. So the people of Jacksonville built themselves a new one. Architects from New York and Chicago came to help design the new city. Suburbs grew. Modern buildings with electric elevators sprang up downtown. During the city’s rapid reincarnation, a new industry took root—moviemaking. Before Hollywood was Hollywood, directors needed a warm climate to shoot pictures. That’s

how Jacksonville became “The Winter Film Capital of the World.” It was worldbuilding at its finest, and when the film industry eventually headed west to Southern California, the city of Jacksonville reinvented itself once again. Offering affordable real estate, a unique coastal environment, and a friendly small-town vibe, Jacksonville courted new residents and businesses whose arrival in the city would catalyze the birth of the worlds that make up today’s Jacksonville. So I kick off my journey with a foray into the most wellknown of these: the world of football.

Go Jags Professional football is a young religion in Jacksonville. Since the city won its NFL franchise in 1993, the Jaguars have transformed Jacksonville into a house of raucous worship on Sundays. As I drive across the bridge into downtown, I see TIAA Bank Field, a gargantuan white mountain on the riverbank, dwarfing the surrounding buildings. Helicopters orbit the stadium. I drop my car at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront,

adorned with Jaguars flags pass me, horns honking ecstatically, I realize what an understatement that is. I feel like I’m in Star Wars, joining a fleet of Rebel X-wing fighters as they prepare to blast into light speed and head for the Death Star. Except that instead of whizzing by stars and planets, we’re cruising through palm trees, along the curves of the St. Johns River, and finally, over a bridge toward the high-rises of downtown Jacksonville. I’m about to learn that Jacksonville isn’t just a city. It’s a galaxy of its own, and it didn't happen by accident.

slather on some sunscreen, and wander through downtown toward the stadium, which is an easy 15-minute walk from the core of the city. Before long, I’ve entered a steady procession of Jaguars fans. We’re passing by parking lots filled with multigenerational tailgaters laughing and crushing brews. (Tailgating is its own sport here. During the annual Florida–Georgia showdown, tailgaters step up their game and throw a huge outdoor soiree known as “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.”) Fans are decked out in jaguar-print tops, jerseys, and those polo shirts that the NFL hawks, and everyone is really friendly to each other. This is a revelation to me. I’m from Boston, where sports fans are known to throw entire pizzas at each other. (Seriously.) But in Jacksonville—or “Jax,” as it’s called by locals—you can arrive in town as a stranger to Jaguars culture and be adopted by the fans. That’s what happens to me. At a crosswalk, an elderly fellow introduces himself as Ken and gives me a recap of the Jaguars’ history. As Ken goes on, eyebrows bouncing, an SUV actually slows down to let us cross. Across the street, two young men are holding open the doors of a bustling craft brewery called Intuition Ale Works, practically ordering us to come inside. I do, of course, savoring the air conditioning and an ice-cold red IPA. But I can’t stay long. I have a game to catch. The stadium is across the street from Intuition. As I enter the belly of the beast with thousands of Jaguars fans, I’m surprised by how welcome I feel here, even as my Intuition Ale Works

The Southbank Riverwalk

fair skin crackles in the Florida sun while I track down my seat. It’s hot, and by the time the first quarter is over, I’m ready for another beer, so I start to head downstairs to the shaded lounge deck. But en route, I catch sight of something. Up on the rim of the stadium, there are glass-walled swimming pools in which fans are cooling off and watching the game. The pools were installed along with cabana lounges and even a dog park, making TIAA Bank Field the only NFL venue where you can bring your swimsuit and your schnauzer. All of which reminds you that in Jacksonville, football is more than a Sunday pastime.

After the game, I’m feeling energized and ready for more. The day is young, so I take a water taxi ride across the St. Johns River, which cuts right through the center of Jacksonville. When I disembark at the Southbank Riverwalk—a waterside pathway decorated by ethereal blue lighting and sculptures—I notice that this enchanting urban trail is surprisingly serene. The only folks I see are a jogger and a young couple on an observation bench. Geographically speaking, Jacksonville is the biggest city in the continental U.S., with borders that encompass more than 840 square miles of neighborhoods and wildlife areas. On a map, it makes New York look modest. Yet the growing population, with a median age of 36, is still only about 892,000 strong. This means that you can snag dinner reservations with ease, enjoy a romantic walk serenaded by the

smokiness complements its tartier champagne notes in an unexpected way. I order one more without hesitation and, just like that, slip into another one of Jacksonville’s worlds, the world of creative craftsmanship.

Art walk No place offers a better glimpse of Jacksonville’s appreciation for creativity than Riverside. Once a sprawl of plantation land, this historic neighborhood is now replete with million-dollar waterfront houses and swanky apartment blocks. Fueled by a cafe au lait from Bold Bean Coffee Roasters, I roam the streets and admire the columned facades. Riverside is also home to the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, which contains more than 5,000 objects spanning from 2100 B.C. through the 21st century. Plunked on the riverbank, the grounds include more than 2 acres of gardens and arborways, pairing native trees and flowers with fountains and marble statues. I share these spaces with families with toddlers and a brawny dude in a WWE shirt. All of them study the art in contemplative silence. In the museum’s Italian Garden, I wander around a reflecting pool with teenagers who are Snapchatting the scenery. Art seems to be a shared language in Jacksonville. I head over to the Five Points district and duck into the colorful 5 Points Vintage to hunt for souvenirs. The owner, Cindy Barfield, greets me at the counter and explains how the store’s inventory has transitioned from antiques to kitschier retro swag from more recent decades. “It’s millennials,” Barfield explains with a smile. “Our younger residents shape the inventory. Pyrex is very in right now, and turn-of-the-century mixing bowls are out of vogue. The kids also seem to like the industrial steampunk look.” As I contemplate buying a pair of leather chaps, my messenger bag nudges a shelf and a small china poodle shatters on the ground. I wince and head straight to the register. But when I try to pay for the damage, Barfield refuses my money. “This little guy will go right on the wall,” she says, taking the pieces and nodding her head toward the entrance. I step outside and see that the entire front of the store is a mosaic of broken antique pieces. There are shards of Christmas ornaments and action figures. The work of art has been years in the making, and Barfield says it’ll only get bigger. Down the street, I find another site of constant creativity: Black Sheep, an award-winning restaurant specializing in globally influenced (and locally sourced) comfort food. Inside, the owner, a gentle giant named Jonathan Insetta, is conferring with the kitchen crew over menu changes. Insetta is something of a culinary wizard in town. He also founded the buzzy French bistro Restaurant Orsay and the newer Southern chow emporium Bellwether. In person, Insetta is gregarious, self-deprecating, and kind enough to sit down for coffee and share his story. “When I was growing up here in the ’80s, we had

sound of birds and rippling water, or—if you’re an entrepreneur—find affordable but expansive spaces for pursuing your ventures. With its low cost of living and business-friendly climate, Jacksonville has long proven an appealing place for big-name employers, from Baptist Health to Amazon, which operates several fulfillment centers in the area. In Jacksonville, smaller companies also have room to grow and thrive, especially as young people continue to move to the city and start their own businesses: A 2018 study by the personal finance website SmartAsset found that Jacksonville was the No. 5 destination in the country for millennials on the move. One distinctly Jacksonville enterprise is Aardwolf Brewing Company, which I come upon after leaving the Riverwalk and trekking through the industrial north end of the San Marco neighborhood. Still coming down from the adrenaline of the Jaguars game, I order a taster and am struck by the San Marco Sour. The beer’s

illegal chickens in our backyard, and my mom grew lots of vegetables,” Insetta tells me. “Back then, ‘farm-to-table’ wasn’t even a thing, and none of my friends were doing anything like this. I didn’t embrace it at the time—it just meant more chores for me to do—but it really influenced my food philosophy.” Black Sheep’s chef and Insetta’s former high school classmate, Waylon Rivers, joins us. “Sports was our gateway into the culinary world,” Rivers says. “I played baseball and football, Jon played basketball, and in the kitchen, you’ve got a similar team mentality where you’re working toward a common goal that’s bigger than you.” Insetta has been nodding vigorously. “That basically describes this moment in the Jacksonville food scene,” he adds. “People are now starting to recognize this city as a food town. And for us, that’s huge.” It’s Black Sheep’s off day, so I decide to have lunch at Bellwether, which is back downtown. The cilantro and scallion-garnished chile pepper boiled peanuts are amazing, savory, and infernally spicy, but juicy enough to dissolve in your mouth. The main course remixes shrimp and grits by swapping out the grits for johnnycakes, dressed in a garlic cream and topped with bread-and-butter jalapenos, house bacon, hot sauce, and roasted corn. Another excellent place to witness more of Jacksonville’s creative side is the public library, which I visit after lunch. The stairways are decorated with enormous murals depicting a thriving community of readers. I take the free

Jax monorail on a scenic trip back over the river to San Marco to visit another untraditional art venue: Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center. The new 330,000-squarefoot treatment center contains more than 700 works of art. “One of the things we strive for here is curating a patient environment that facilitates healing,” oncology administrator LeeAnn Mengel tells me as I admire some stained-glass butterflies near an elevator. “There’s been so much research done on the effect of placing artwork in treatment centers. It can add color and soften the light in a room.” By now, I can’t help but ponder what feeds this local proclivity for the arts. Plenty of cities lack the color, craftsmanship, and quirks of Jacksonville. What makes this place so expressive? I contemplate this while ambling over to Treaty Oak Park, which contains one the oldest live oak trees in Jacksonville. It reminds me of an octopus, with thick branches so long and tentacle-esque that they touch the ground. Walking beneath the mammoth tree, watching my step as some tiny orange lizards scurry across the sidewalk, I wonder what it is that fuels Jacksonville’s creativity, without realizing that the likely answer is staring me in the face. That evening I’m sitting by the edge of the rooftop lounge at River & Post, a chic seafood restaurant back in Riverside, and I’m finishing my glass of Graffigna malbec when several birds soar overhead. They’re

flying east along the St. Johns, beyond downtown, toward the sunset. And I know what awaits out there. It’s the wildest and most ancient of Jacksonville’s unique worlds—the great outdoors.

Ready for the country

Well, that was easy The sun is rising as I drive through the thick, chirping woods of Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park at the north end of Atlantic Beach. I get out of my car, move through the trees, and emerge at a long stretch of beach where Kristen Huth, a surfing instructor with Jacksonville Surf and Paddle, is waiting for me with two colorful boards. She hands me one, and the water is warm as we walk into the ocean. I’m really doing this. “You should have seen how choppy it was last week,” Huth tells me before an oncoming wave cuts the memory short. We both take a deep breath and are submerged as the wave passes over us. After popping back up, we continue into chest-deep water, where Huth helps me point my board toward the beach. I try to mount the thing and slide right back into the sea, a process I repeat at least 15 times before managing to plant both knees on the board and stay balanced. “OK, here we go,” Huth says as another wave surges behind us.

THERE GO THE NEIGHBORHOODS

Springfield / This historic neighborhood features some of Jacksonville’s most remarkable architecture and is enjoying an influx of new business, including the Strings Sports Brewery.

“Try to keep centered.” I barely hear her as the wave picks up my board and hurls it toward the beach. I get up on both feet and enjoy a millisecond of surfing before flying straight into the drink. The wave crashes, and I resurface. Time seems to stop as I tread water. What am I doing? How did I get here? What’s happening to me? In the past 72 hours, I’ve transformed into a Jaguars fan, a sour beer drinker, and a really bad surfer. I’ve become a bit player in an ongoing, decades-old story about a city that built worlds within a world—because that’s what Jax does. You enter this city a tourist and leave a different person. Joining the characters here and becoming part of their shared narrative is easy. You should try it sometime. Miles Howard is a freelance writer living in Boston. Jacksonville has the largest urban park network in America. We’re talking 80,000 acres of vivid green forests, mangroves, riverways, and, most famously, beaches. You don’t have to go far to step into any of these environments. I’ve barely driven 20 minutes from downtown when I stumble upon Castaway Island Preserve, where I stroll along a boardwalk past an estuary that is literally buzzing with life. I push on to Big Talbot Island State Park. A hike through the verdant forests delivers me to a secluded beach covered with twisted trees. Birds sing overhead. Talk to locals and you’ll hear tales of kayak fishing off the coast, cycling along the beaches, paddleboarding on the rivers, and more. But the outdoor activity on my mind today is surfing. The waves are intense, creating “tubes” that crash and spray water everywhere. As I drive south along the coastline, passing bungalows, I can spot daredevils surfing the break on their boards without a care in the world. It looks scary, but also kind of fun. I end up in nearby Atlantic Beach. After checking into the Hotel Palms, a former motel refashioned as a gorgeous boutique inn, I borrow a complimentary beach cruiser to pedal down to the water. As the sky darkens and the lights of Atlantic Beach come on, the world transitions from golden to deep blue. I venture into town and score a last-minute table at Restaurant Doro, where I enjoy crispy short ribs in an intimate space. When I step outside after dark, I spot surfers lugging their boards to the beach. I watch them disappear into the moonlight, listening to the gentle roar of the waves.

shopping and dining are big draws, too. There’s a grab-andgo taco shop, a beachfront tiki bar, and a rooftop sushi restaurant with views of the ocean. Looking for a spot to post up and watch the big game? Make your way to Draft, a laid-back sports bar with a 31-foot TV screen and nearly 100 brews.

AWAITING DISCOVERY on San Diego’s Point Loma Peninsula, Cabrillo National Monument is named after Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European explorer to set foot on the West Coast. Today, the 144-acre park continues to be a place for exploration, serving as a home for cultural, historical, and natural resources. Travel through three eras, starting your journey at the

visitor center to learn about Cabrillo’s voyage in 1542. Then, tour the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which was first lit in 1855, and continue your cliffside stroll among coastal defense systems from World War II. After soaking in the history, get your feet wet (literally) at the tidepools in the rocky intertidal zone. You can use the iNaturalist app to share your park discoveries

with other nature enthusiasts. Scientists, park rangers, and their partners with the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation preserve the park by conducting research studies and inspiring thousands of local students during field trips. If people are not able to make it to the park, CNM officials bring the park to the people via community outreach events like festivals and school visits.

SPIRIT OF NEW MEXICO

With unmatched natural wonders, a vibrant multicultural heritage, and those famous chile peppers, New Mexico is like no other place on earth. By Kate Chynoweth

filled with natural

beauty and rich in culture, New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment for good reason. Go sightseeing at historic pueblos and spectacular state parks. Seek outdoor adventure against the backdrop of the soaring Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Visit Santa Fe and Taos for relaxation and creative inspiration. There are endless ways to explore what

makes New Mexico unique and one of the most beautiful parts of the Southwest. In the summer, be sure to check out the state’s many one-of-a-kind festivals. Albuquerque’s Festival Flamenco, the longest-running flamenco festival held outside Spain, draws world-class performers to the city every June. The Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Red Rock Park kicks off in August. The annual event brings together Native

Americans from across the U.S. for art exhibits, a rodeo, tribal dances, parades, and much more. And on the Friday before Labor Day, it’s time for the 95th annual Burning of Zozobra festival in Santa Fe. After daytime food and fun, torchbearers arrive at dusk to light up Zozobra, a 50-foot-tall effigy also known as Old Man Gloom. their troubles with the celebratory burning every year. Make sure to enjoy the state’s vibrant culinary scene. No trip is complete without New Mexico chile. Many of the best-loved regional favorites showcase chile peppers, from fiery red chile pozole studded with hominy to hatch green chile calabacitas. At least one order of chiles rellenos is a must. Stuffed with cheese, dipped in batter, and fried to crispy perfection, they are a local specialty. In the northern part of the state, blue corn is a beloved staple. Try a breakfast of blue corn pancakes or cheese enchiladas made with blue corn tortillas. After every memorable meal, you’ll have to agree: The food in this great state is just as distinctive as the landscape.

We are a community of unique perspectives embracing our differences. We are a culture of contrast rather than a contrast of cultures, unafraid to let our colors run and blend and let the very things that divide us become the things that connect us to each other. So we can create, collect and spread knowledge—about everything from nuclear engineering and fine art to enzymatic fuel cells, revolutionary medicine and forensic accounting. WHAT IT TAKES TO BUY A FRANCHISE

Make sure your investment will pay off financially and personally. Ask these key questions to find out which business opportunity is the right fit for you. By Jim Gold

get ahead of the pack when bill and kevin

Blackmore began searching for the right dog daycare business, the father-son team had a lot of questions. Dogtopia had the answers. The Blackmores visited many franchise and independent dog daycare centers. The owners of Dogtopia franchises shared advice on how to keep dog owners happy and build a business. The Blackmores liked what they heard. The Blackmores asked Dogtopia franchisees how to attract and maintain a customer base and build a team. They asked questions about hiring, training, and keeping canine coaches motivated—in short, they wanted to know what their organization should look like. Some owners operated multiple locations and hired general managers for each; others had single locations they managed themselves. The Blackmores decided to adopt the latter model. They asked the Phoenixbased Dogtopia franchise team about support, training, growth plans, and more. “Economic analysis was very important to us,” says Bill. After getting the answers they were looking for, the Blackmores decided to become business owners. In 2017,

they opened their franchise in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. The space has three dog playrooms, a special air filtering system, compressed rubberized flooring that aids long-term joint health, canine grass, and other amenities that make the franchise stand out. Bill helped launch and oversee the business. Kevin is the full-time general manager, which allows him to combine a passion for dogs with his business acumen. Their franchise continues to grow and attract new customers. “We’re pleased with our progress,” Bill says. “We’ve exceeded expectations on every front.”

Live webcams allow pet parents to watch their dogs online or through the recently upgraded Dogtopia mobile app. Prospective clients can tour Dogtopia any time it’s open, no appointment necessary. “When we give tours, we emphasize transparency,” Kevin says. Dedicated employees also help ensure customer satisfaction and build trust with clients. When the Blackmores started, Dogtopia had around 40 centers. The company, now the fastest-growing franchise in the booming pet industry, is on track to have about 400 open by 2023.

Transparency is key to running a successful Dogtopia franchise.

But how will you know what to ask? “We help our clients with the questions they need to ask the franchisor and franchisees of the system,” says Jack Johnson, who co-founded The Franchise Insiders with his wife, Jill. Their no-fee consulting

firm connects clients to their best-suited franchise opportunities. The Franchise Insiders’ business builder assessment is a proven matchmaking tool for potential franchise owners. At any given time, The Franchise Insiders is working with about 30 clients looking to invest in a franchise, Johnson says. The Johnsons ask current franchisees: If you had to do it again, would you buy this franchise? “We typically only connect our clients to franchisors where franchisees are happy and say they would do it again,” Johnson says. “That’s just part

of how we help give our clients the insider’s advantage.” When questioning a franchisor, Johnson says, seek information on the company’s strengths and goals. Clients should know where a franchise system plans to be in five years, and what steps the company is taking to reach that goal. You’ll want to know about startup money, including expenses and fees, Johnson says. Is additional capital required after launch? You will also want to research the competition and find out how the franchisor protects your territory. “Ask, ‘What does your training program look like?’ and ‘What ongoing training do you offer?’” Johnson says. Find out if franchises awarded in your state remain unopened and, if so, why. Also ask if franchised units failed and why. He also suggests getting information from operating franchisees. Find out the basics, including how long they’ve been in business, whether they work full-time, and what their main duties are as owners. Current franchisees can also tell you about their experiences with franchisors and offer insight into whether the company provides ongoing training, marketing, promotions, and advertising. “Ask, ‘If you need assistance, do you get it easily?’” Johnson says. Franchisees can also give you earnings and growth details. “We have helped hundreds of people become franchise owners,” Johnson says.

Senior Helpers Town Square offers cutting-edge reminiscence therapy.

Take Senior Helpers Town Square, which offers reminiscence therapy in adult daycare centers built to look and feel like quaint small towns of the 1950s, complete with replicas of diners, movie theaters, hair salons, and more. “It’s a new, fresh concept that provides a one-of-a-kind experience for seniors,” says Peter Ross, co-founder and CEO of Senior Helpers. Town Square Franchising is part of the Senior Helpers family of companies owned by Altaris Capital Partners, a health care private equity firm that Ross says has more than $2.7 billion under management. “There isn’t anything like it in

the market. It’s going to be an industry changer,” he says. When investing in a franchise, find out if the company’s values match yours. Learn how it will support you and how it can help you find a suitable location for your business. Ask about the company’s financial fitness as well, Ross says. Town Square training covers all aspects of operating the center, including instructions on filling the roles of a center director, marketing director, and activity director. You’ll also learn how to work with your local Senior Helpers office. The company doesn’t leave you on your own. “You will want to feel comfortable with the level of support that will be available to you after you open your doors,” Ross says.

make sure you ask about a

company’s culture when you look into franchise opportunities, says Rob Cantrell, Senior Helpers’ vice president of franchise development. Senior Helpers’ 300-plus franchises specialize in care for dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s patients who live at home. Franchises also provide care and support for seniors facing age-related illnesses, limited mobility, and other challenges. Senior Helpers is more than a business. “Senior Helpers culture is mirrored around the company’s core values, which were established by its founders,” Cantrell says.

Senior Helpers co-founder and CEO Peter Ross adopted a set of values built on trust and providing the best experience for clients. Those values are: “Integrity Without Compromise, Improve Quality of Life, Open and Effective Communication, Positive Attitude, Continuous Advancement, and Celebrate Life.” “In establishing these values, Ross built a team that works extremely well together and is passionate about the work we do,” Cantrell says. Members of the Senior Helpers brand are treated like family, Cantrell says. And that family is growing more and more at a rapid rate.

Senior Helpers is committed to celebrating life and improving quality of life.

About 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 every day. More seniors are living longer and want to keep living at home. The need to provide help will continue to expand. “Our business model has a long-term upside for success,” Cantrell says.

home care assistance makes it meaningful ask not only what operating a franchise can do for you, but also what you as a franchisee can do for your community. “We’re looking for people who are not just interested in a new job or stream of income. We’re looking for people who want to make an impact in their communities,” says Barbara Schuh, Home Care Assistance’s vice president of franchise operations. “More people are walking away from corporate life and seeking something more meaningful, more than a job,” Schuh says. “They want meaning and purpose in their

We provide meaning and purpose for elders, and you can have that as well in your own daily life.” A good example is the father-son team of Kirk and Mark Febus, who own and operate Home Care Assistance of Dayton, Ohio. “They’re not just about growing a business. They’re about giving back,” Schuh says. Among other charitable activities, Mark is on the board of their local Rotary Club, and both father and son always make sure to participate in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraiser. Being able to positively impact the lives of older adults and their families means a great deal to Mark and Kirk, who say the testimonials they receive are priceless. before getting into any business, look in the mirror. “Ask yourself, ‘Can I see myself doing this?’” says Michael Wagner, president of Pool Scouts, the pool cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs franchise. For example, a Pool Scouts operation requires being out in the field, working on pools, as well as various other front-end duties, such as talking on the phone with customers, scheduling services, ordering materials, and handling marketing. If you can see yourself doing either role, then ask, “How will you prep me?”

Pool Scouts provides training and a playbook for the business side of the franchise, as well as instructions on pool chemistry, water circulation, and equipment, Wagner says. Pool Scouts is always researching new developments, like connecting pools to Wi-Fi networks so homeowners can turn on fountains and pumps from their phones. “Franchisor success depends on franchisees’ success,” Wagner says. “It becomes personal.” Franchisors get to know franchisees on a close, personal level. “It’s a pretty strong bond, more so than in the corporate world.”

One Question

Anjelica Huston,

what do you remember about your first acting gig?

ready for action /Anjelica stars in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, in theaters May 17. For an extended interview, visit southwestmag.com/anjelica-huston.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL JASMIN

My first big gig was in the hallway of my parents’ house in Ireland with Peter O’Toole and his wife as my audience. I was 9 years old, and it was a failed attempt at the witches from “the Scottish play.” I forgot my lines over the burning cauldron, so I didn’t get very far with that, but then I made a movie with my father [director John Huston] when I was 16 called A Walk with Love and Death. That was my first official gig.
