DATING ROI

Technology has made dating more complicated and impersonal. Hiring a matchmaker might be the smartest investment you could make in your personal life. At first, Larry Chiarelli, director at a tech start up, thought he was doing all he needed. Sign up on multiple dating websites. Meet lots of women. Eventually, the right one would come along – except she never did. So he decided to bring in the professionals and hired It’s Just Lunch. IJL’s matchmakers got to know him and his preferences. They selected his dates, arranged schedules, and even made 

the restaurant reservations. Dating became stress-free and fun. Larry was a practical guy and didn’t believe in love-at-first-sight, but that was until IJL introduced him to Ping. What was your dating life like before joining It’s Just Lunch? Lawrence: Chaotic! I was meeting a lot of women but not the right women for me. Online dating was time consuming and

stressful. I needed someone to help out, to relieve me of the dating busy work so I could feel some breathing room. I needed to slow things down to speed them up. IJL fit that criteria perfectly for me. Ping: I was very busy with work when I discovered IJL. I was seeing different people I mostly met through friends and by attending events. Online dating

seemed so time consuming so I was never willing to invest what little time I had into something so hit and miss. I used to tell my friends: Who has time for online dating…browsing through profiles all night when I could be doing something else with my time." Why did you decide to join It’s Just Lunch? L: A good friend of mine mentioned that IJL may be a good resource for meeting women who were a better match for me. Plus, joining would let me get back some time in my life that was sorely lacking.

P: I fly frequently for work and for fun, and when I saw It’s Just Lunch in the airline magazine, it was as if the matchmaker was talking to me! One day after a particularly long flight and wanting to snuggle with someone and watch a movie, I decided it couldn't hurt to give it a try.

P: The stress-free experience! I had a professional matchmaker to select matches and set up restaurant reservations for me. All I needed to do was to show up and focus on getting to know my date.

L: Easy and convenient. At the time the company I was working for was going through a merger so I was away from home quite a bit in all day meetings. I’d finish my day and there would be a voicemail from my matchmaker telling me about my next match. I’d call back, get the details and run through my availability. The next thing I knew I was in front of an interesting woman having a great conversation.

see a “first date” again.

P: Stress-free and fun! Exactly what I needed because dating can be so frustrating. I always looked forward to meeting my next match.

Do you have any advice for singles who want to meet that special someone? L: I tell my clients an analogy all the time: Would you rather drive across the country in a Toyota Corolla or a BMW 5 series? They always say the 5 series. You get what you pay for and to me the juice was definitely worth the squeeze with IJL. Investing in yourself and your future with someone special means investing in the right matchmaking service. For me that was It’s Just Lunch.

P: Invest in your own happiness, it is always worth it. I never would have met Larry if I hadn’t joined It’s Just Lunch. It’s the best decision I've ever made.

L: Having someone doing all the work to select and schedule a date. It was like I had my own personal dating concierge to take care of all the details. All I had to do was be on time for my date and be myself. It really was a stress-free experience.

Gary’s Greeting

Democratizing the Skies at high prices, and only the elite could travel. Believe it or not, our Cofounders viewed the automobile as our chief rival. Their vision was to introduce a low-fare airline that would take business travelers out of their cars and into the skies, making possible a day trip to another city for business meetings and back home in time for dinner. It was a novel idea—and it worked! Today, the world has changed, and millions of people board airplanes every single day for all the reasons that are important in their lives: work, vacations, weddings, births, deaths, or simply to

explore the world around us. The one driving factor that makes this all possible is low fares. Southwest has stayed true to our low-fare brand since day one. It wasn’t that long ago when certain “amenities” were included with the price of your ticket on most airlines. Things like checking a bag or two, snacks, making a change to your reservation, or getting an aisle seat. In 2008, several of the legacy airlines began charging bag fees, and everyone followed suit—except Southwest Airlines. We held firm on our belief that if you’re going on a trip, chances are you might want to bring a bag with you! Today, you can still check your first two bags for free on Southwest Airlines, and we are the only domestic airline who can make that claim. A recent study comparing airline prices found that, more times than not, Southwest still offers the lowest published fares on the routes we serve. We are committed to making sure that doesn’t change. But when you factor in all the hidden fees the other airlines charge, it’s not even close. Southwest is the lowest option by a wide margin—87 percent of the time, in fact, for a Customer checking two bags. We call it Transfarency®—low fares with nothing to hide. Yet another novel idea, and just like our original simple plan for meeting the needs of our Customers almost 46 years ago, it works!

Gary Kelly Chairman and CEO Southwest Airlines

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN KELLER

When the idea of Southwest Airlines was conceived on a cocktail napkin in a hotel bar in San Antonio more than 50 years ago, only 15 percent of the United States population had ever flown on a commercial airplane. Today, that number is more than 85 percent. The reason is simple—low fares democratized the skies, and Southwest Airlines had a lot to do with that. Southwest’s original business plan was a triangle drawn on a cocktail napkin, with the lines connecting Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston. While several airlines served those routes, they did so

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN KELLER

Aunque cueste creerlo, nuestros Cofundadores

OLD SCHOOL

As an original Adopt-A-Pilot, Frank Jackson has been a part of the program for 20 years.

Reaching for the Skies

Southwest Airlines celebrates 20 years of the Adopt-A-Pilot program. Each spring, Southwest Pilots spend four weeks in fifth-grade classrooms on an educational and mentorship journey. The core subjects—geography, math, science, and history—are taught in a fun way. But just as important are our FLIGHT values: fearlessness, leadership, imagination, gratitude, honesty, and tenacity. The Southwest Airlines Adopt-A-Pilot program began in 1997 with 51 cities. This year, we have more than 600 AdoptA-Pilots teaching more than 35,000 students nationwide. Since the program’s inception, we have reached more than 550,000 students. Southwest has always had a passion for loving People, and we believe that education is key to fulfilling your dreams. As we celebrate the program’s 20th anniversary, we look to Frank Jackson, an original Adopt-A-Pilot. “I remember being asked, ‘What do you think about truly giving back, not only to the airline

but to the community?’” Frank says of his job interview with Southwest in 1992. “I responded, ‘I’m all for it!’ It was a small snowball that just kept going and going. That was the catalyst. When you were hired back in those yesteryears, that was just part of the DNA. You’re not only flying—you’re really giving from your heart. It wasn’t about what you’re going to receive in your pocket or the accolades from the Company, but what you’re doing when nobody’s watching.” Frank retired from Southwest last August but still volunteers as an AdoptA-Pilot. He teaches in inner-city Los Angeles where he feels he can make the most impact. He attributes his spark to President Emeritus Colleen Barrett because he is, in his own words, “old school.” Now that he’s retired, Frank is committed to spending more time at the school to support the kids and their teachers. “I have a chance to help these kids to step up just a little bit. Just study a little bit harder,” Frank says. Frank has been “adopting” students all these years, but he truly gets much more back! —Janet Felty, Senior Coordinator, Community Programs

You Made Our Day WANT TO SHARE YOUR STORY? Have you witnessed an over-the-top act of Southwest Airlines Employee kindness? Let us know at Southwest.com/ contact-us.

I’ve been a fan of Southwest Airlines for many years, but I just found another reason to love this airline: customer service agent Janez Eli. When we found out our flight from New Orleans to Orlando was three hours late, a collective groan rippled through the gate area. What could have been a hostile scene of tired travelers turned into a gate party because of Janez. She started calling over people who were passing by the gate, and then she asked us what we wanted them

JUST IN TIME

Please let captain Michael Reskovac and first officer Kyle Dill know that they did it! My daughter went into labor prematurely, and I was a nervous wreck, worrying about the baby and upset that I couldn’t be there for my daughter. When Michael and Kyle found out what was going on, they did everything they could to get me to Tulsa in time. They even offered to drive me to the hospital. There are no words that adequately describe

Dear Southwest,

to do. It didn’t take us long to catch on, so when she asked, we yelled out, “Sing!” Some people ran away like scared rabbits. Others stayed and gave us military hymns, a Christian rap, a funny folk song, soulful blues and jazz by a professional French Quarter soloist, and other moments to remember. A local high school dance team even performed a couple routines they planned to present at a national competition. By the time our flight arrived, the gate consisted of cheerful acquaintances. We shared snacks the airline provided, laughed at the antics of our performers, and, as they say in N’awlins, passed a good time. Keep up the good work, Southwest. As the owner of Writing YourLife.org, I assure you that this will be included in my written life story. —Patricia Charpentier

what they did for me that night, but in all of my days and all of my travels, I have never, ever witnessed this kind of compassion. They have had my prayers since that evening and will for the rest of my life. I can’t seem to write anything that expresses what their actions mean to me. Thanks to them, we arrived safely and on time, and I was beside my daughter when baby Colton was born at 9:29 p.m. He spent 16 days in the NICU, but he is home now and doing great! —Ila Yates AN ANGEL AT GATE 19

While waiting to check in at our gate for a recent flight, my 1-yearold vomited all over himself and his stroller. Customer service agent Myra Bayquen didn’t hesitate and quickly helped me clean and sanitize my son and stroller. She asked if we had any clothes to change him into, but of course I had checked all of them (rookie mistake!). While I was undressing my son, she ran to a kiosk and bought clothes for him. I am so touched by her kindness and

generosity! She had no idea, but our family was traveling to attend the memorial of my husband. It has been such a difficult transition over the past few weeks as we process the loss of such a great husband and father. I’m so grateful for the wonderful Myra helping us! Human kindness strikes again. Southwest Airlines, you have an angel at gate 19! —Emily Rocks NEVER OFF DUT Y

I’m writing to make you aware of the very positive behavior of Orlando ramp agent Miguel Tomas, who selflessly came to my assistance. I blew a tire in my rental car and happened to stop at a convenience store where Miguel was making a purchase. He overheard my conversation with the clerk and immediately offered his assistance. Not only did he change my tire, but he also led me back to my hotel! His reassuring attitude made my negative experience into a positive one. I cannot thank him enough for his assistance, and I wanted you to be aware of his caring attitude. I will

never forget his timely assistance to a total stranger. —David Collins HEARTS TO SERVE

My mother, Dolores Salganick, and I would very much like to thank the wonderful Southwest crew on our recent flight. About an hour into the flight, my mother, who has a tracheostomy, became distressed due to the very dry air and was having difficulty breathing. She needed humidity and power for her portable vaporizer. The wonderful flight attendants—Samuel Getty, Brian Simmons, and Anna Baldermann—were able to find an outlet. Because the plug wouldn’t stay in, they took turns on their knees keeping the connection for the duration of the flight so my mom could breathe. Anna had experience with tracheostomies because of her father, so she understood the complications quite well. We thank the flight attendants from the bottom of our hearts for helping my mom on the flight—we couldn’t have gotten here without their help! —Ingrid Reis-Glass

from the editor

Dear Reader,

At the age of 6, I achieved paradise. My family booked a cottage for a couple weeks on New Hampshire’s largest lake, Winnipesaukee. I took all of my allowance money and profits from selling recipe cards door to door and rented an old rowboat called Jim. Many mornings I loaded Jim with a fishing rod, worms, books, and enough candy to sustain life for a day. I rowed from island to island, picking blueberries and goofing off. Other days I hung around on shore, diving for mussels with my sister and brothers, gathering the courage to jump off the high dive, and learning slang from the Boston city kids. This went on every summer after that. Mom and Dad weren’t that present. Parents in general seemed like the ones in the “Peanuts” cartoon specials, making insignificant wah-wah-wah sounds in the background. They let us take our own risks. An unscraped knee meant a rotten summer. Families were bigger on average, and while I felt loved, I was under the happy impression that I was slightly disposable. Am I being nostalgic? Maybe. But the thing is, paradise is possible today. All we have to do is bring summer back. Confiscate the phones, unplug the TV, escape cable and broadband. Go someplace where kids can hang out together with as little supervision as possible (and where you can, too, without the kids). A piece of summer should be unstructured, unplanned, with risks of bruises and bug bites and arguments and even occasional bouts of glorious boredom. It’s very possible that your kids will hate it, and that they’ll hate me for suggesting it. Just tell them that this is the secret real purpose of summer: to make the rest of the year seem like its own paradise.

Dear Editor,

Thank you for Bradford Pearson’s wonderful article, “A Botanical Investigation” [March 2017]. I went to watching-grass-grow.com and quickly discovered exactly what he was talking about. It was at once calming and thought-provoking as I thought about snapshots in time in my own life. I loved how Bradford was able to relate it back to his young daughter. I thought of my son, Jameson, who turned 2 this past Saturday, and of his first real experience with snow just a few weeks ago. I will be there with you every now and again, watching the grass grow, along with my life. Andrea Nyman

/ Kids grow even faster than grass, Andrea. Your son and Brad’s daughter are lucky to have such wise parents. SOOTHING SOUNDTRACK

I’ve read hundreds of magazine articles and never felt the urge to reach out to the author until now. Bradford Pearson’s piece was fantastic. The very brief mention of “ambient music” as a parallel to the Norwegian Slow TV niche was spoton. In college, I hosted a two-hour, weekly instrumental/post-rock radio show, and

the quest to dig up new artists and bands led me to strange corners of the internet. Often, the most interesting acts were Scandinavian and Japanese. My hunch is that something about their geographical isolation or extreme latitude (and thus extended hours of darkness) resulted in those cultures being a bit more tuned in

FOR USE BY MEN & WOMEN The physician-recommended cap that’s clinically proven to regrow hair discreetly under a hat is now available for men and women. No need to endure the embarrassment of astronaut-type helmets or Cinderella-style headband gadgets. Capillus laser therapy caps prevent progression of hair loss and regrow thinning hair in a dignified manner. Manufactured in the USA, the Capillus82 is FDA-CLEARED and has no known adverse side-effects, so you can use it with confidence.† Nothing tops it for convenience. Wear it just 30 minutes every other day. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user - making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide.* At $799, the Capillus82 is an incredible value for the amount of lasers (comb devices are priced as much as 4x the amount per laser).

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle. to this “watchfulness.” It requires patience and a willingness to accept the repetition in a scene or song for long stretches of time, so when that bird enters the frame or that guitar riff veers into new territory, the result is pure heaven. I haven’t been in touch with that musical scene for a while, but I still love zoning out on long plane rides to those artists I uncovered years ago. It’s my form of meditation. I appreciated Bradford Pearson’s article on Mr. Grass’ live video streaming. Our family watched Meek’s Cutoff some years ago, and I still get teased for it. Clearly the director was ahead of her time. The movie has a lot of the same

elements as Mr. Grass’ live stream does. Good job expressing appreciation for “video meditation.”

socks per month.

Determined to solve the mystery of the missing laundry, Samsung polled 2,000 U.K. residents to find out just how many of their socks have vanished without a trace. After examining the respondents’ washing habits and determining what contributed to their MIA footwear, the company teamed with psychologist Simon Moore and statistician Geoff Ellis to create a formula to calculate the likelihood that you’ll find yourself sans socks once a load is done. Here’s what you should know: the “sock loss index” = (L + C) – (P x A). In other words, that’s (laundry size + washing complexity) – (positivity toward doing laundry x degree of attention). We did some quick calculations, and that still doesn’t give you an excuse to wear mismatched socks.

The hatter behind Formé Millinery shares favorite finds worthy of Churchill Downs. Leading up to the Kentucky Derby, Jenny Pfanenstiel makes more than 1,000 hats at her shop in the Mellwood Art & Entertainment Center. She molds material over wooden forms, and then tops the hats with sculpted braids, liquid glass, or a bamboo-based, basket-like material called Jinsin. Clients include Oprah and Michelle Obama, as well as Vineyard Vines and Cirque du Soleil. OUT TAKES BORN AGAIN If I could live my life over again and choose another profession, I’d love to play bass like Bootsy Collins in Parliament-Funkadelic.

Anthony Bourdain

Different paths can lead to finding your career purpose, says the chef and TV host. I never had a set career plan. Until I was in my forties I just drifted from job to job, trying to get a little smarter. But as a dishwasher and a cook, I did learn certain lessons that stuck with me forever: the importance of showing up on time and not letting your colleagues down. When I became a father at 50, I was determined to be good at that job, and to live my life in a way that my daughter has no

reason to feel ashamed of. It’s a responsibility and joy that I take very seriously, and it changed my outlook; it made me really want to share the good in the world. Traveling [for Parts Unknown] has allowed me the satisfaction of walking in other people’s shoes. As different as we are, our similarities always become clear, especially over a meal.

SWEAT THE TECHNIQUE Good cooks can make good food out of bad ingredients. So many of the places I go, people are poor but manage to make really tasty food out of very little. It’s all about technique.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CNN

Anthony produced the culinary documentary Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent, in select theaters now.

SOMETHING FISHY I could live without scallops. I don’t hate them, but I don’t particularly like them. Maybe I’ve cleaned too many in my lifetime.

Banish Email Anxiety

Productivity pro Jocelyn Glei strategizes ways to help you gain control of your inbox. How does email actually impede our productivity? “On average, people spend 30 percent of their week checking and responding to email,” says Glei, author of Unsubscribe: How to Kill Email Anxiety, Avoid Distractions, and Get Real Work Done. “We’re letting our inbox dictate our mood and to-do list. I recommend ‘batching,’ where you only check your email two to three times a day. For some, that’s impractical, but the idea is to avoid multitasking and only dedicate a certain amount of time to email. Studies have shown batchers to be happier, less stressed, and more productive.” 46 Southwest may 2017

F1_solution_kt.indd 46

But what if you miss something important? “With Apple Mail, for example, you can designate VIPs—your boss or important clients—so you get a push notification when they send an email.” You recommend an email audit. What is that? “Take a week to evaluate the kinds of messages you receive, then create an auto-responder or canned template. It’s a tactical way to eliminate backlog.”

Why is it necessary to set email expectations? “If you respond within five minutes every time I email you, I start to expect that. If you get an urgent-sounding email but have more important things to attend to, don’t ignore it or drop everything to respond. Instead, send a quick expectationsetting email. Let them know you received it, where it falls on your list of priorities, and when you’ll respond. Providing context alleviates their fear that it fell into the email black hole.”

Any apps you use to manage your inbox? “My favorite is EasilyDo. It allows you to combine different inboxes, hit ‘snooze’ and set reply reminders, turn off read receipts, and automatically group messages into categories— like your travel bills and flights all in one folder.”

Breather

Here’s a breath of fresh air: modern workspaces on demand. Here’s how co-founder and CEO Julien Smith describes the meeting place matching service: As a freelance business writer, I never had an office. When I finished my third book, I traveled a lot—not just to different cities, but within Montreal, where I was living. Co-founder Caterina Rizzi and I designed the service around that need: We knew we’d be in different places and wanted available spaces there. With Breather, you use the website or app to scroll through units—different office spaces— based on where you are located or

want to be. If you’re in another city and have a 2 p.m. call, you need your own space to do that. So you book a space for 2 p.m., and pay per hour through the website or app. When you arrive, you get an entry code for the unit. Breather is convenient whether you’re meeting people or going to get work done. One value is privacy. The other benefit is that what Breather does is everywhere. You have a phone and a laptop wherever you go, so it makes sense to have a workplace wherever you go, too.

Surround Sound

These smart headphones are revolutionizing the way we hear.

Listen up! The H1 Headphones ($199) by Even will change how you listen to music. Because we all perceive sound differently—even from our left ear to our right—the headphones are calibrated by measuring your reaction to audio clips and frequencies. To create this individual “EarPrint,” or audio profile, the AI interface plays eight short music clips in each ear, and you indicate when you first hear sound. Although you need to charge the headphones, the battery life lasts for 12 hours of listening time, and the device’s nylon cords are tangle-resistant and colorcoordinated (white for your left ear, black for your right). The personalized settings help lower volume and highlight instruments in your music. Now that’s some positive feedback.

Get Moving Avoid the pitfalls of sitting all day with Flexispot’s Wellness Workspace. Sitting in front of a computer for eight or more hours per day is the norm for many people with office jobs. But there are downsides to a sedentary lifestyle. Unwanted weight gain, higher blood pressure, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease make a desk job more dangerous than it appears. Flexispot’s Wellness Workspace, a “sit-stand-move” approach, incorporates sitting, standing, and low-impact exercise to keep employees healthier and more productive. The Ergonomic Monitor Mount enables users to maintain a neutral shoulder, neck, and back position while minimizing screen glare. A Height Adjustable Desk allows workers to seamlessly transition between sitting and standing with a touch of a digital control pad.

Add in motion with an Under Desk Bike. Simply roll the bike under the height-adjustable desk for light exercise while working on a computer or taking a phone call. Reduce the risk of neck, back, and shoulder pain and other health hazards by rotating between sitting, standing, and light exercise throughout the day. Employees who feel better work better, and companies who show commitment to their staff’s well being can attract top talent and a diverse workforce. Protect the longterm health of your staff with Flexispot’s dynamic system, and enjoy the benefits of “sit-stand-move” lifestyle in the workplace. Welcome Back to Camp Tawonga!

S’mores, cabins, and a reminder that some things never change. / BY STEVE ALMOND

O

ne of the many strange things about being a parent is how much my kids love to hear stories of my childhood. I suspect they find great comfort in the notion that I was once a small and powerless creature, just like them. This would explain their eerie fascination with The Story of the Rock.

F1_essay_kt.indd 55

The Story of the Rock goes like this: When I was 7 years old, I went to sleepaway camp for the first time. Next to our cabin was a huge rock, and one afternoon I decided to climb it. I managed to get halfway up, and then got stuck. I didn’t have the strength to climb any farther, but there was no way to get back down. I spent many minutes yelling for help. I soon realized I was going to peel off the rock. Down below was jagged stone, onto which I would fall and be maimed or possibly killed. And so, after many panic-stricken minutes, I fell. Miraculously, I landed in such a way that I merely suffered a bruised tailbone—what my children refer to, hysterically, as my “butt bone.” That is the Story of the Rock, which I have told them 371 times. It is one of the many yarns my wife and kids have had to endure about my magical years at Camp Tawonga, where I spent three weeks every summer for eight straight summers. Then a funny thing happened. Last year, a woman from good old Camp Tawonga sent me an email asking whether I might want to teach during a weekend session. I could even bring my family. I soon found myself driving a rental car full of hyperglycemic children into California’s Stanislaus National Forest, outside Yosemite, winding down the narrow road I had last descended 35 years earlier. All the familiar sights were still there—the tiny lake, the archery range with its tattered may 2017 Southwest 55

targets flapping in the August breeze, the sun-baked softball field. The first stop for the kids and me was obvious: the rock. They wanted to see the actual site where their actual papa had nearly died. The rock was still there, just a few paces away from B-1, the cabin where the youngest campers slept. The problem was that it had somehow shrunk, rather dramatically. Instead of the towering granite slab I had recalled, my kids were

staring at a softly rounded boulder approximately 8 feet in height. “Is that it?” my 7-year-old, Jude, asked. “Maybe it’s harder to climb from the other side,” his older sister, Josie, said, gently. They dashed around the rock and appeared on the summit four seconds later. “They probably moved the real rock,” I heard Josie tell her brother, “because too many kids were getting hurt.”

IT’S SURREAL TO revisit an iconic childhood locale, to see the emotionally gigantic landscape of youth reduced to the scale of adulthood. Here was the dining hall where I had, so long ago, slammed my plastic cup with 200 other campers to demand a higher grade of bug juice. Here was the lavishly chlorinated pool where I’d learned to swim in the deep end. And here was the fire pit where I’d made 10,000 s’mores. They still made s’mores. They still said the same blessing at meals. And they still sang the same songs at campfire each night: “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” and “Friends, Friends, Friends,” the official Tawonga anthem. Even the smells were the same. The industrial pine scent of the communal bathrooms, the coconutty waft of suntan lotion, and the smell of campfire that clung to our sweaters. My wife was quick to observe that I wasn’t the only alumnus wandering around in a haze of nostalgia. There was a whole band of us, dragging our kids hither and yon and grinning our goofy grins. I took Jude to see the gaga court, which was still in the field next to the pool. Gaga, for those of you unfamiliar, is an Israeli variation of dodgeball in which kids pile into a dusty corral and attempt to smash a ball into each other’s shins. We played a few rounds, just the two of us, until I got a little overzealous and wound up with bloody knuckles, a condition formally known as gaga knuckles. I took Josie to the river below camp, a journey that had felt epic as a camper but which was actually about 500 yards, and we plunged into the water. Then I offered her a secret tour of the circuitous route we used to take, late at night, to sneak from the boys’ side of camp to the girls’. She immediately understood the appeal of such a mission—i.e., it was against the rules—though she was a bit

perplexed about the endgame. “What did you do when you got to the girls’ cabins?” she asked. That sort of depended on how old the respective raiders and raidees were, but I kept things G-rated for Josie, who was 9. “We flirted and ate a lot of candy,” I reported, which was also true. NATURALLY, THE CAMP had undergone some capital improvements. There was a nifty gazebo for yoga, and gluten-free options offered at every meal. (Back in the feathered ’70s, nobody knew what gluten was.) There was also a wonderful and wonderfully terrifying new ropes course. I emphasize terrifying in deference to Josie, who inherited my fear of heights and did not at all enjoy being 30 feet off the ground. The fact that she was clipped into a safety harness offered her little reassurance. And yet she was determined to walk the rope strung between two trees. Three times she climbed up and struggled to take that first step. Each time, fear paralyzed her and she was belayed to the ground, redfaced with shame. Finally, a pair of instructors took Josie aside and gave her the kind of pep talk most effectively delivered by hip young women with muscles and tattoos. Up Josie went for one final attempt, cheered on by her mentors. She took one step, then another and another, and didn’t stop until she’d conquered the rope. She returned to terra firma triumphant, hugged both the instructors, and floated back to our cabin. Not surprisingly, Josie is already lobbying to attend Tawonga—without her parents. The problem is that we live outside Boston, not in California, and the tuition for a three-week session is way beyond our means. As Josie has pointed out—a pox upon the internet!— Tawonga offers financial aid. So you might say we’re in a phase of negotiation. (Parents will recognize “negotiation” as a euphemism

that can be roughly translated as “absorbing an unrelenting barrage of pleadings and guilt trips.”) I’m sure I’ll eventually relent, and not just because Josie is a world-class lobbyist. Seeing the look on her face after her highwire triumph, I remembered why camp had been such a big deal, why memories of the place had stuck with me for so long. I’d been the same kind of kid as Josie: anxious, easily frightened. Camp Tawonga had been the one place in the world where I could ditch the version of myself enforced by my family and school mates and become a kid who was a little less self-conscious, a little more self-forgiving, and therefore a lot braver. At camp, I did things I never would have tried at home. I dove off rocks into mountain lakes. I marched into woods I was certain were overrun by rattlesnakes and bears. I edged my way across sketchy footbridges. I snuck over to the girls’ side of camp to rendezvous with my first real girlfriend. I threw my arms around the shoulders of my bunkmates and fought back tears when it came time to sing “Friends, Friends, Friends” at the campfire on the final night. And yes, I fell off giant 8-foot boulders. As a father, my achievements didn’t seem quite as epic as they felt at the time. But I could also see now, through the eyes of my children, that I was missing the point. Camp was a place where kids went to enlarge their sense of possibility, a sacred ground reserved for the creation of personal myths. The moment Josie returned home, she told her grandfather that she had walked across a “tightrope 50 feet off the ground.” By the time she has kids of her own, that rope will likely have risen to 100 feet, and it will be strung across a gorge filled with rocks as sharp as teeth. I have children that started in my infant room 5 years ago and now they are graduating kindergarten. Seeing that is the greatest joy of this job.

Veteran and Brand Champion Navy veteran Cory Bullock and his wife Summer chose the Kiddie Academy child care franchise to start their own business in 2008 and have never looked back. As his commitment to the Navy drew to an end, Houston resident Cory Bullock began considering career options. He and his wife, Summer, began looking at opportunities to start their own business. During their search, they reviewed various franchise industries, including tanning and food, before agreeing on child care. After several months of research, they zeroed in on Kiddie Academy. The Bullocks were impressed with the Kiddie Academy corporate team, and were also able to take advantage of Kiddie Academy’s program for veterans. Cory and Summer opened Kiddie Academy’s first Houstonarea location, Kiddie Academy of League City, on August 18, 2008. The Bullocks have achieved monumental success – both from a business and personal standpoint. They have consistently maintained high enrollment numbers, created a wellrecognized brand presence in their community and formed many solid relationships with the families they serve. Cory and Summer have had the pleasure of seeing the results of their hard work in the many children they serve. They have seen the quality of the product first hand with the children’s advancements and accomplishments.

In 2012, Cory and Summer were named Kiddie Academy Franchisees of the Year. ALBUQUERQUE Stay in an adobe abode, stroll through Old Town, and see the glowing red mountains from above.

SEE

There’s no better way to take in the desert landscape and red sandstone mountains than from a hot air balloon at sunrise. Rainbow Ryders offers daily private balloon rides that include a celebratory champagne toast. If you’re visiting in October, don’t miss the famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

SIP

Sidetrack Brewing Company serves up its ever-rotating set of flavors in a pub-like atmosphere, complete with live music on Friday nights. If you’re a hop lover, go for the Chinook IPA, or, for something a little darker, try the new Coal Bank stout, with notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Not a beer drinker? Ask for the wine list, which includes blends from nearby wineries.

SAVOR

Found in the trendy Edo neighborhood, The Grove Cafe & Market does breakfast, brunch, and lunch using locally sourced ingredients. Notable menu items include the organic egg white frittata and housemade soups. After your meal, peruse The Grove’s market of candies, gourmet chocolates, and boutique kitchen products.

DO

Old Town is the site of the original 1706 settlement that later became Albuquerque. History permeates the brick pathways that connect brightly colored shops, museums, and restaurants. Make time to stop and enjoy the street performers’ acts before journeying on to your next destination.

In August, the Santa Fe Indian Market puts on the largest juried Native arts show in the world. Other highlights include the Native Cinema Showcase, curated contemporary art exhibition, and haute couture fashion show.

SEE

As the only museum devoted entirely to exhibiting and interpreting the art of the Hispanic Southwest,

the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art has something to teach both art aficionados and amateurs alike. This May through October, the museum exhibits “Mirror, Mirror: Photographs of Frida Kahlo.” More than 50 images trace Kahlo’s journey as an artist. Enchanted Charms of the Southwest

Open April through October, The Kitchen at Plants of the Southwest nursery is a hidden gem, run by one woman serving up vegetarian lunches. Each day brings something new: You might chow down on red lentil and roasted vegetable soup with lemon, mint, and sunflower seeds, or find braised eggplant gratin baked with ricotta and fontina cheeses. If you’re lucky, apple galette with salted caramel ice cream will be served for dessert. To guarantee a spot at the 20-seat table, make reservations in advance.

THE INSIDE SIP WITH STEVE RIBOLI Riboli Family Wines’ vice president reflects on 100 years of bottling vino at the family’s historical Los Angeles location, San Antonio Winery. Q: How are you celebrating the winery’s 100th anniversary? A: We opened a new winery facility in Paso Robles in September; that was the kickoff. We have some “end of Prohibition” type parties where we’ll be introducing our Lux series—two new sparkling wines under the Stella Rosa brand. Our limited edition Centennial Blend is a monster of a wine with flavors of dark cherry and blackberry, and notes of spice and vanilla. Q: What sets Stella Rosa apart? A: The wines are easy to drink because of the lower alcohol content. They’re refreshing and also great as mixers. Millennials, in particular, have SPIRIT MAGAZINE

A: The cucumber cooler, a combination of Stella Rosa Imperiale Moscato, lime juice, honeydew, cucumber, honey, and mint.

Q: What does the future hold? A: We work closely with consumer feedback to stay innovative. There is no better focus group than those who visit our tasting rooms. Our family has embraced the vision of change and we’re really excited to have every generation on board. Visit riboliwines.com for more info.
