Sweet, savory, soft, chewy, sometimes even prophetic, cookies are the ultimate common denominator. We’re taking a big ol’ bite. COOKIES FOR THE AGES No wonder we’re nostalgic for the smell of ’em. They’re baked into our history. CULT COOKIES These treats are hot—and not just because they’re fresh from the oven.

HIGH RISE

Chocolate chip cookies: forever on the up-and-up.

COOKIE COMPANIONS Culinary stars make milk alchemy. (Trust us, it’s better than it sounds.) OUTSIDE-THE-BOX COOKIES From hamantaschen to spritzgebäck, these curiously shaped mainstays are rooted in global traditions.

At Southwest Airlines and our subsidiary, AirTran Airways, we don’t think of ourselves as a Company of planes; we are a Company of People. Sure, we offer a service, or what we like to call our Purpose: to connect you to what’s important in your life through friendly, reliable, and lowcost air travel. But transporting you to and from your destination is only what we do. How we do it and who we are, or our “secret sauce,” is found in our single greatest asset—our People. We know that the difference

between flying an airline and being a loyal Customer can be as simple and meaningful as the human connections made along the way. We have always “hung our hat” on providing the best Customer Service in the business, at a low cost. Now, I realize that almost any company would (and should) say that, so you may be wondering, “What’s the difference at Southwest?” The difference is this: Everything begins and ends with our People. If we keep our Employees happy and engaged, they

Customer Service in Action I received a note from a Customer who recently traveled with her husband and two children from Lubbock, Texas, to Orlando, Florida, for a vacation at Walt Disney World. Their youngest son, Kenneth, a sixth grader, realized upon arrival in Orlando that he had lost his homework pass. They continued their vacation, assuming it was gone for good. When they returned home, they found a message on their answering machine from a Flight Attendant named Roy, informing them that he had found Kenneth’s homework pass and wanted to mail it to him. As you can imagine, the family was very appreciative. Kenneth says, “Roy is awesome!” I couldn’t agree more!

will keep our Customers happy, who will reward us with their loyalty. That repeat business helps our bottomline and creates value for our Shareholders. Our People formula is pretty simple: We hire for attitude and train for skill. Fortunately, because of our Brand rankings, great pay and benefits, history of no layoffs or furloughs, and our world-famous Culture, a lot of great folks want to work at Southwest. This means our pool of potential Employees is chockfull of the best and brightest. In fact, last year we received 114,845 résumés and only hired 2,499 candidates. (A person has a better chance of getting into an Ivy League university than getting hired at Southwest.) We take great pride in hiring the right People and spend a lot of energy on doing so. Once onboard, we don’t focus intensely on rules or policy applications, except those related to Safety. Instead, we give our Employees the Freedom to be themselves, to do the right thing, and to take care of our Customers. But we do have one rule that overrides all others, and that is The Golden Rule—treating others as you wish to be treated. We’ve found over our 42-year history that if we hire People with passionate Servant’s Hearts and empower them to do what’s right, they will consistently surprise, delight, and amaze our Customers. By building a Company that is People-centric, we have built the most successful and profitable airline with the best Customer Service in the history of commercial aviation. Thanks for coming along for the ride!

TASTY THANKS

Rob shows his gratitude with sandwiches.

Culture, camaraderie, and combined efforts are just a few things that come to mind when First Officer Rob Vos thinks about Southwest Airlines. Rob joined the Southwest Family eight years ago, and he has more than 30 years of flying experience. On his first day at Southwest, Rob noticed that there was something different about the Company. “The Culture is definitely what sets Southwest apart,” Rob says. He gives a lot of thanks to his management for leading by example, and he firmly believes in the pay-it-forward philosophy, which he puts into action by organizing an annual lunch for his Fellow Employees at the Norfolk Station as a way of thanking them for all their hard work and service. Since he started with the Company, Rob has commuted weekly from his hometown of Norfolk to Baltimore/Washington and has fostered great friendships with the Norfolk Station Employees. Just as Rob LUVs his job as a First Officer, he also LUVs what the job does for him. Southwest affords Rob opportunities to do things he enjoys outside of work, like fishing, golfing, and spending time with his wife of 30 years and their two daughters. He is grateful for his travel privileges, which allow his daughter Abby to fly back and forth from graduate school, and he also appreciates the “Freedom to think outside the box” that his supportive management gives their Team. “We all take care of each other with the ultimate goal of taking care of our Customers,” Rob says. “Rob is one of the best folks we have,” Baltimore/ Washington Chief Pilot Bert Seither says. It comes as no surprise to us, Rob, that you were named Star of the Month. We are so lucky to have you on our Team. Your nonstop commitment to Southwest has not gone unnoticed, and we couldn’t be prouder of you! —Brandi DeWaters Blue Man Group is proud to give Rob Vos two tickets to a Blue Man Group show as a token of appreciation for his work and dedication. Rapid Rewards Freedom Story

18 SPIRIT SEPTEMBER 2013

When Karen Holst co-founded an educational technology startup in 2006, she was already a fan of Southwest Airlines for leisure travel. Now that she’s an entrepreneur, speaker, and nonprofit consultant, she LUVs Southwest even more. Karen travels to various colleges and universities, advising chancellors, administrators, and students about how to utilize and adopt new technologies. In her meetings, she focuses on how institutions should embrace technology to tailor education to the individual needs of students— leading to student academic fulfillment and career achievement. “Southwest makes flying easy!” Karen says. “And ease of travel is paramount when your job focuses on meeting and speaking in all 50 states.” Since Southwest doesn’t impose change fees, Karen is able to plan trips months in advance without worrying about schedule changes. Between weekly flying and bonuses for having A-List Preferred Rapid Rewards status, Karen sees her points add up quickly, and that allows her to pursue all of her passions, including running. “I’m able to run marathons in New Orleans, New York City, and everywhere in between,” she says. “I can even bring my own cheering section, my boyfriend, who travels on my Rapid Rewards Companion Pass.” Karen serves on the board of directors for three nonprofit organizations. When she travels for them, she uses her Rapid Rewards Points to cover the ticket instead of expensing the cost, so the organizations can use their funds to help the people they serve. But these perks are overshadowed by the true reason Karen keeps coming back to Southwest week after week. “It’s hard to encompass a feeling,” she says. “It’s like why you go to your favorite restaurant. You know it’s reliable, it’s high quality, and the people there are better than anywhere else you’d go. It’s the same at Southwest: The Flight Attendants even remember my name!” —Devon Cross

From the Editor

Dear Reader,

This month we offer you cookies, in the form of a sweet package of stories starting on page 56. Also this month, coincidentally, a meal replacement product called Soylent goes on the market. Soylent is the invention of Rob Rhinehart, a 24-year-old electrical engineer who grew tired of eating junk food but didn’t want to cook. He mixed a batch of calcium carbonate, magnesium gluconate, protein isolates, maltodextrin … yeah, I don’t have that stuff in my refrigerator either. Anyway, he came up with a drink that he lived off of exclusively for 30 days; he says it made him the healthiest he’s ever been. (He geekily chose the name Soylent from the book that inspired the sci-fi film Soylent Green.) As of this writing Soylent has $1 million in preorders, according to the website TechCrunch. But let’s get back to cookies. The staff covered the gamut, from history (the Civil War helped create the modern American cookie!) to booze (cookie pairings!), all while celebrating the cookie’s simple beauty as the ideal treat. We Americans have grown kind of weird about treats. Either we shy from the calories or we eat fat and sugar for every meal. Neither way is healthiest,

according to the latest science. In fact, an occasional treat can actually be good for controlling our weight. The secret is eating sensibly the rest of the time. There’s an old saying that goes, “Eat to live; don’t live to eat.” That’s why the idea behind Soylent is kind of cool: It’s about eating to live. Nutritionists will tell you it’s best to cook real food, and Soylent hasn’t been tested on many people yet. But it’s the philosophy of it that interests me. Feed the body what it needs, then have a treat. Even Rob Rhinehart, Mr. Soylent himself, says he likes to go out to a restaurant now and then. Good for him. My own mother would have agreed. “It’s called dessert because you have to deserve it,” she would tell us kids. “So eat your vegetables first.” Then have a cookie. —Jay Heinrichs Editorial Director

Your Words

Dear Spirit,

I read “American Idol” by Bruce Anderson [July 2013] with great interest on a recent flight. It was about Pinnacles, America’s newest national park, and the sanctuary it has become for the California condor. It was great to learn of the amazing comeback the condor is making after facing near extinction and the contribution it makes to our environment by being a carrion feeder, feasting on the carcasses of expired animals. The California condor truly serves a valuable role in our ecosystem, and I am happy to know that, unlike me and my fellow travelers, it isn’t limited to just two carrion. National parks are the crown jewels of our country. But our newest, Pinnacles, raises the question: What does it take to be one?

TIES THAT BIND

I enjoyed reading your July article “Made in America.” I clearly recall a visit to the Tonka Truck factory in Minnetonka, Minnesota, when I was in elementary school. Seeing those little trucks pieced together before my eyes sparked my 6-year-old imagination; it taught me that every object has a story, whether it’s made by the thousand or by the dozen. I’ve always been in love with fashion and all things historical, and, at 18, I started making custom corsets. At the time, I thought it would be me and maybe one other person producing these garments. Twenty-four years later, I have a staff of 15 that helps me design, pattern, cut, stitch,

and sell these creations out of our storefront in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. Who knew that an 18-year-old’s dream of making pretty things for people to wear and feel better about themselves in could turn into a world-renowned business with a celebrity clientele—and every single garment is proudly made right here in America. Thank you for sharing the stories of other enterprising folks. It all starts with a dream. —AUTUMN ADAMME SAN FRANCISCO

We doubt that many corset makers were inspired by toy trucks, Autumn. You clearly had the Yankee ingenuity within you.

BLANKET STATEMENT

I was happy to see the “Made in America” article in July’s Spirit magazine. I wanted to point out that my company, Woolrich, Inc., has been proudly making woolen garments and blankets in the USA for more than 180 years. From blankets for Civil War troops to woolen goods for Admiral Byrd’s expedition to the North Pole, Woolrich has woven its fabric into the landscape of American history. Thanks for reminding us of another American treasure, Chris. CHEERING THE VETS

En route to a conference, I was thrilled to see the article on Honor Flight veterans in the Community Outreach section [July 2013]. Some

time ago, while waiting for a flight at BWI, I had the fortune of joining Southwest staff and members of the military in welcoming veterans who had journeyed to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to their brave service. Seeing the appreciation on their faces remains one of my fondest memories of air travel. — L I L LY K A N

Returning home from hiking the Grand Canyon, I spotted an article about my distant relative. You see, my maternal grandmother’s maiden name was Lorraine Wemette, who shared a great-grandfather with Francis Ouimet from your story “This is the Greatest Sports Tale Ever Told” [June 2013]. (Grandmother’s side of the family had “Americanized” the name.) Before she

PURRRFECT SHOT

I have traveled on Southwest every month for the past seven years. During that time, I’ve learned, laughed, and cried with Spirit magazine. I have to say, in seven years, my favorite thing was the March issue “Pic of the Month” [Your Pictures], which featured a kitten carrying a bag of Southwest peanuts in its mouth. I look at that photo every day, and it just makes me smile! —A P R I L S I M K I N S L O N G B E A C H , C A L I FO R N I A

September Songs If April showers bring May flowers, what is it about August that brings waves of new music in September— and, in this particular year, from artists in the autumn of their careers? Cher, Sting, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Gloria Estefan, and Sheryl Crow are hoping to prove that album sales aren’t going in just One Direction. With new music of their own this month, Drake, MGMT, Neko Case, John Legend, Kings of Leon, Jack Johnson, and Chris Young are hoping to prove that, well, um, yeah, album sales aren’t going in just One Direction!

Prabu Punch “Pumpkin drinks almost always focus on the same old baking spices, which lend a boozy, pumpkin-pie note to them. But my favorite pumpkin dishes are Indian curries, so I wanted to utilize those flavors in a fall cocktail. This drink has a beautiful mouthfeel that won’t turn insipid if it sits for a bit, and the aromatic garnishes affect its overall balance, as so much of what you taste is about what you smell. It’s a refreshing cocktail that whiskey lovers really respond to, but it’s also very approachable for those who don’t usually find themselves drinking aged spirits. The name comes from a character in the book Shantaram. Prabu—a joyful man, loyal and generous, with a famously toothy smile—was the protagonist’s first friend and guide in India.” WHO Joaquín Simó, partner WHERE Pouring Ribbons WEB pouringribbons.com

“The building that Merchants Restaurant is housed in was built in 1892. Our second floor is all about chef-inspired fare, and our first floor, called The Bistro, is where we serve classic Southern and Americana-type food—burgers, sandwiches, fried green tomatoes, and this macaroni and cheese, which is one of our best sellers. You start with heavy cream, cook it down, and add the cheese, so it’s almost like a cheddar Alfredo. Then you get the roasted crunch of the poblano, the smoky goodness of the bacon, and the sweet finish of the tomato—all of which complement the cheesy sauce. It’s a really awesome, rich macaroni and cheese. If this won’t fill you up, nothing will.” WHO Duane Loftus, sous chef WHERE Merchants Restaurant WEB merchantsrestaurant.com

A lot has changed since 1918, when this Tudor-style spread was constructed to house employees of the plumbing manufacturer Kohler. These days, overnighters are attracted to four Pete Dye– designed championship golf courses, a 25,000-square-foot spa that specializes in hydrotherapy, and plush accommodations. (This being the house that Kohler built, every lav has a whirlpool tub.) A three-year renovation was completed in April, but don’t let that keep you indoors: The resort is surrounded by a 500-acre nature preserve and offers genteel pastimes like archery, trap shooting, and horseback riding. Back at home base, treat yourself to beerbattered cheese curds and local craft ales at the cozy Horse & Plow taproom. You’re only an hour north of Brew City, after all. lightbulbs.

That’s about 600 volts—or five times the electricity you’ll get from a wall socket. How does such a slowmoving fish unleash all that energy? “It has specialized organs that contain thousands of electrically excitable cells, each of which can produce 100 to 150 millivolts,” says Bruce Carlson, a biology professor at Washington University in St. Louis. “When the eel feels threatened or is hunting prey, it triggers all of the cells simultaneously, creating a surge capable of lighting up a Christmas tree.” Despite what you’ve seen in cartoons, there is no glow involved, only subtle twitches. You’d be twitchy, too, if you were habitually misidentified. It turns out the electric eel isn’t an eel at all—it’s a knifefish. Shocking, right?

So there it sits in your drawer, a relic of a past Dead concert or romantic relationship, still perfumed with patchouli or your ex’s pheromones. According to a recent survey commissioned by CustomInk, the average person has not one but 13 of these cottony keepers. “We’re more likely to bond with others when we share an emotional event together,” says Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner, a clinical psychologist and the author of You Are What You Wear. “T-shirts from group gatherings and memorable occasions become a representation of that emotion.” Sigma Chi Date Party 1990, looks like you’re here to stay.

It may be hard to imagine, but there was life before email and Twitter, at least in the case of this curvy character. The first documented use of the ampersat, as it’s informally known, was in 1536. In a letter, Florentine merchant Francesco Lapi employed @ to represent amphorae, or clay vessels used to store wine. It evolved to mean “at the rate of” and appeared on typewriters as far back as the late 19th century. Things came full circle in 1971, when computer scientist Ray Tomlinson invented email. “When I selected @ for separating name from computer, it was a relatively unused character,” he says. “Now, in some sense, it signifies what the Internet has become.” Is it safe to say @ has successfully made the transition from symbol to icon? All signs point to yes.

So, what’s your number? According to the United States Postal Service, which instated Zoning Improvement Plan codes in 1963 to better cope with increasing mail volume, there are a multitude of answers to that question. The anatomy of the familiar address accompaniment is as follows: “The first number represents a general geographic area of the nation, ‘0’ in the East, moving to ‘9’ in the West,” usps.com states. “The next two numbers represent regional areas, and the final two identify specific post offices.” Ketchikan, Alaska, is home to 99950, the highest ZIP on record. And the lucky sender gifted with the custom ZIP 12345? That would be General Electric, in Schenectady, New York. What can we say? They’ve got juice.

“Many of the things I’ve done in my life have basically been self-taught. I think we, as the Muppets, broke new ground because we approached puppetry from a different angle. I had never worked with puppets when I was a kid, and even when I began on television I really didn’t know what I was doing. I’m sure that this was a good thing, because I learned as I tackled each problem. I think if you study—if you learn too much of what others have done—you may tend to take the same direction as everybody else.” The life and work of the creative genius is celebrated this month with the publication of Jim Henson: The Biography, by Brian Jay Jones. Lawdingo Finding a legal eagle just got easier. Here’s how Nikhil Nirmel, founder of Lawdingo, describes the online legal community: “There have been plenty of times when I needed a lawyer but, like many people, opted not to get one because the process seemed too laborious. This got me thinking about how lawyers do business. Many work for themselves and conduct client relationships via phone and email after the initial consultation. I thought, if this is how the industry is operating, why not create an online platform that connects attorneys with those who need their help? Lawdingo does just that. Lawyers in good standing with their respective bar associations pay a fee to be listed

on the site, and we bring them prospective clients. Users enter the state in which they live and the type of legal issue they’re experiencing. From there, they are given a list of professionals licensed to practice in their area, as well as personal details like education and length of career, reviews, rates, and availability for each candidate. You can speak to a lawyer the same day you log on, and most initial consultations are free. All scheduling and transactions are handled through the site. It goes to show that finding help doesn’t have to be painful.” lawdingo.com

Motion Detector Increase your nonverbal know-how with pointers from presentation pro Matthew Kohut.

Stretch Your Confidence “Before walking into a high-stakes situation, raise your arms as high as you can, making yourself as big as possible for a minute or two,” Kohut says. “Your mind will listen to your body’s signal, resulting in a hormonal reaction that increases your comfort level and decreases your fightor-flight response to stress.”

Matthew Kohut is the co-author of Compelling People: The Hidden Qualities That Make Us Influential.

Play Hand Ball “Avoid awkward gestures by imagining you have a ball in your hands. Start with a volleyball, and position both hands between your waist and your hips. Depending on the point you’re trying to make, the ball can grow to the size of a beach ball or shrink to the size of a marble between your thumb and index finger.”

48 SPIRIT SEPTEMBER 2013

f2_bizschool_bh.indd 48

Keep Your Head Up “Slightly tilting your head conveys warmth. This gesture is useful when listening attentively to someone but can be interpreted as uncertainty or a lack of confidence in a business setting. When trying to project professionalism and self-assurance, keep your head upright.”

Own the Space “There’s a difference between using space comfortably and pacing back and forth like a caged animal. Move deliberately and with a sense of purpose while you’re speaking. For example, you might walk to a specific spot, make a point or two to the people seated there, then head in the opposite direction to engage the other side of the room.”

To get a pulse on today’s dating scene, we talked to Cindy Herington, one of the many dating experts at It’s Just Lunch, the world’s largest personalized matchmaking service. Here she explains why you should ditch the laptop for the tabletop.

1

Ditch the Laptop

The premise of It’s Just Lunch is simple: a lunch date or drink after work is the ideal first date. It’s a no pressure, relaxed setting where you can actually talk face-to-face. “Real chemistry happens in person,” Herington says. “You may be having a great online relationship, but when you finally meet, you discover that the person you’ve spent so much time

5 TIPS FOR MODERN DATING with in cyberspace is nothing like what you imagined.” Replace those digital emoticons with a no pressure, casual lunch date and you’ll know immediately if you should take it to the next level.

2

Get a Wingman (or Wingwoman)

It’s Just Lunch’s clients often refer to their matchmakers as their “dating wingmen” (or wingwomen) because they handle all of the dating logistics. Herington describes her role, saying, “We’re genuinely interested in understanding our clients. We listen. We really get to know your personality and what you’re looking for in that significant other.” Every IJL match is hand-selected. There’s no online profile for the world to see and it’s all confidential. After the date, It’s Just Lunch matchmakers receive feedback from each client in order to fine-tune their next match. “We offer something online services don’t: someone to talk to,” Herington says. Imagine having a full-time dating wingwoman who really understands you, working for you while you’re focusing on your career and personal obligations.

“IT’S JUST LUNCH HELPS YOU MAKE TIME FOR THE THINGS THAT MATTER...”

3

Boost Your Dating ROI

Who wants to spend hours sifting through online profiles and trying to connect via email, pokes and winks? You don’t have time to waste playing digital guessing games and meeting the wrong people. When you’re investing your time and energy in something important, you deserve a strong return. With IJL’s personalized match selection

and date coordination, clients are able to save valuable time and energy. “After we select your match, we’ll describe the person to you and confirm a convenient time and place for you to meet. All you have to do is show up and have fun meeting someone new,” Herington says. Less time searching equals more time dating. That’s realized ROI.

4

Date Smarter

Herington reminds singles who contact her that they can have a career and a relationship. They just have to “date smarter.” “If finding someone to share your life with is important to you, you can make time and have it all,” she says. “If you don’t have time to do your taxes, you hire a CPA. If you don’t have time to manage your investments, you hire a financial planner. It’s Just Lunch helps you make time for the things that matter. IJL helps you date smarter.” Since It’s Just Lunch matchmakers take care of all the matching and logistics, you can focus on finding that elusive chemistry in the offline world. IJL is a better, smarter way to date and increase your odds of finding that someone special.

Folded into the fabric of American history and life, our favorite indulgence— chewy, crunchy, nutty, heartwarming—endures. YIELDS:

“Since modern machinery

has produced such marvels … old-time cookies have rather gone out of fashion.” Sound bite from some Slow Food guru? Try a pearl-clutching editorial written in 1895, the same year Fig Newtons turned 3. Advances in technology had changed everything Americans knew about baking, and when we started to get our fix from store shelves rather than the countertop cookie jar, it seemed to many—especially the editors of Everyday Housekeeping—that we might entirely abandon the “tiresome task” of doing it ourselves. In those days, homemade cookies were plain-Jane shortbreads: flattened, baked until bone-dry, and expected to remain edible for an indefinite amount of time. Things changed when the Civil

War forced professional bakers to kick it into gear to feed the troops. This meant investing in industrial mixers, steam-powered rollers, and Ferris wheel–style ovens. When the war ended, bakeries were stuck with state-ofthe-art equipment and dried-up demand. So they created a new market, and America soon fell in love with mass-produced animal crackers, vanilla wafers, and graham crackers. They were crisper and tastier than any 19th-century housewife could manage—and convenient too. Next came waffled wafers, gingersnaps, and that famous Fig Newton. Indeed, the future of homemade looked bleak. But in reality, factory production gave the handcrafted cookie a pivotal kick in the pants. Americans quit trying to compete with mass-produced snacks and entered a reactionary DIY era that

produced the chewy, chunky drop cookies we love today. These newfangled sweets weren’t as shelf-stable as those shortbread wafers, but they didn’t have to be. Dolloping a spoonful of dough onto a tray took way less effort than kneading, rolling, and cutting; baking was now simple enough to be part of our everyday lives. This simple shift made it easy to invite kids into the kitchen. No more demanding techniques or risk of failure—the kinds of things that make little helpers not so helpful. Decades later, we can close our eyes and still see the cloud of flour puffing up from the bowl, hear the sound of chocolate chips tumbling from the bag, and almost catch a buttery whiff of a batch oozing in the oven. Whether we make ’em from scratch or opt for a shortcut, it’s impossible to imagine not wanting to share the experience of cookies with our own children, or to simply recreate it for ourselves whenever we need a comforting taste of home. —Stella Parks Parks is a pastry chef who blogs at bravetart.com. Momofuku Milk Bar, New York City “It’s all about cleaning out the cupboards and folding them into a quirky cookie— what else would possess us to combine pretzels, potato chips, coffee, chocolate, butterscotch, oats, and more?” says pastry chef/owner Christina Tosi. “I look at it as a funny, waste-not-wantnot approach that I learned from my mother and grandmother in the kitchen.”

Tartine Bakery, San Francisco When pastry chef Liz Prueitt discovered she had a gluten sensitivity, she and her husband (bakery co-owner Chad Robertson) began developing desserts free of the offensive protein. In addition to its Sweet Collection, the shop peddles the unlikeliest of baked goods: the savory cookie. “I live in Paris part-time and love inviting friends over for aperitif,” Greenspan says. “I was looking for something fun and not too filling to serve. I started with savory loaf cakes then dabbled with biscuits. When I finally got to savory cookies I knew I’d found the perfect have-with-adrink nibble.” She eventually brought the idea stateside, where New Yorkers are becoming converts at her shop in the Lower East Side’s Essex Street Market. MEAL OF FORTUNE A takeout fave’s fabled history. Indisputably the most ubiquitous odd-shaped confection in America, the fortune cookie stems from the moon cake, a pastry served in 14thcentury China. In an effort to plan a revolt, bakers once slipped messages inside, sparking the concept of cookie communication. But the prefab treat we’ve come to love originated during the California Gold Rush in either San Francisco or L.A., depending on whom you believe. Today, Brooklyn’s Wonton Foods is the country’s biggest producer of both cookies and fortunes. As for the wisdom found in the rest of the cellophane-wrapped treats being made in the U.S., remarkably it mostly falls to two scribes: Steven Yang of San Francisco, and his former employer, Yong Lee of Boston, who cut ties in 1993, apparently following a common cookie adage: “A journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step.”

Surely you recognize this coffee-shop staple. But back in its home country, biscotti is paired with more than just joe. “The tradition is to offer a glass of Vin Santo and some biscotti to your guests,” says Lidia Bastianich, host of Lidia’s Italy in America. “That combination is also a common way to finish a meal.”

These triangular treats are associated with the Jewish feast of Purim. ALOHA. ONE OF THE WORD’S many meanings is “sharing the breath of life.” And in a traditional Hawaiian greeting, two people lean into each other, gently touch their foreheads and noses together, and inhale the same “ha,” or breath. It’s an exquisitely intimate exchange of friendship, but it’s not how Wally Amos enters a scene. Pulling out of his high-rise apartment building a block from Waikiki Beach, the man universally known as Famous Amos announces his presence with the chimes of a Good Humor truck. Fixed beneath the hood of his SUV are speakers that, at the flip of a switch, fill the palm-lined streets with the plink-plink of Disney’s “It’s a Small World (After All).” Heightening the head-turning spectacle are the car’s vanity plates—WALLY1—and the large images of a beaming Amos plastered to

its side panels. The badly scraped front-left and rear-right wheel wells aren’t intended to impress. “Twice I’ve run into a pillar in my parking lot,” the 77-year-old entrepreneur says with a laugh. “And last week I got sideswiped by a bus. I’m supposed to take that up with the city, but the truth is I’ve been more harmful to my car than anyone else.” The elaborately adorned ride functions as a rolling billboard, and an effective one at that. Arguably, Amos is the most well-known face on Oahu, challenged only by the temporary appearance, a few years ago, of some guy named Clooney. (The Oscar-nominated film The Descendants was shot here.) To be accurate, it’s not Amos’ face that sparks recognition, it’s his Technicolor uniform: standard-issue flip-flops and shorts topped by an Aloha shirt, a lei of braided ribbons, and a lid wor-

thy of the Mad Hatter—if Lewis Carroll’s mischievous oddball had a thing for watermelon. Everywhere we stop on today’s tour of this island paradise, Amos will be bathed in warmth. “Hey, Wally!” hollers a bellman fronting the circular drive of the tony Kahala Hotel & Resort. “Uncle Wally!” cheers a horn-honking local on jam-packed Kalakaua Avenue. (In Hawaii, uncle is an affectionate sobriquet showered on elders.) On the chill main street of the North Shore town of Haleiwa, a white pickup with monster wheels rumbles past Matsumoto, the Le Cirque of shave ice. Leaning across the passenger seat, its tatted driver isn’t too cool to give the old man a shout-out: “Famous Amos!” The good vibes are remarkable given the distant success that made Amos identifiable in virtually

every corner of the globe. “Now,” says the guy who decades ago was dubbed “the cookie man,” “I’m famous just for being famous.”

O

UR WORLD WAS a little less sweet in the early ’70s. Stand-alone cookie stores like Mrs. Fields didn’t exist. Neither, for that matter, did most of the guilty-pleasure emporiums that now crowd food courts and airport terminals. In March of 1975, when Amos, a broke talent agent and father of three, opened the first Famous Amos cookie store on a seedy stretch of Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, he had no way of knowing he’d change the course of confectioner history and one day see his lowbudgeted act of desperation grow into a company worth tens of millions of dollars. SEPTEMBER 2013 SPIRIT

THE MIXMASTER

In part, what fueled Amos’ fame was the signage on his first store, and his likeness on each bag. His bold style—even at home, with his son Shawn— didn’t hurt either.

“Of the big four, he was definitely the first one in,” says David Liederman, whose David’s Cookies duked it out with Famous Amos, Mrs. Fields, and the Great American Cookie Factory for gourmettreat dominance. With Famous Amos as prototype, the age of Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s, ad nauseam, had dawned. “It was a budding industry,” Liederman says. “And Wally was a master at getting publicity.” Today, the culinary world is aflame with noisy, outsize, ready-for–prime time personalities like Emeril Lagasse, Guy Fieri, and Rachael Ray. It’s arguable that Wally Amos pioneered this now ubiquitous foodie flamboyance. A tireless promoter and motormouth, he’d do anything to draw attention to his brand, which, within sixteen months of its launch, had expanded to three retail stores and, in a deal that helped turn the

local phenomenon into a national one, the posh aisles of Bloomingdale’s. Through guest spots on television, countless public appearances, and the Famous Amos packaging itself, the image of a fully bearded Amos in a Panama hat and embroidered, Indian gauze shirt became inseparable from the cookie’s success and made him into one of the quirkiest and most visible cultural icons of the late 20th century. The quirks are still there. This mid-July morning, Amos—at 6’1”, a reed of a man with a puzzling medicine ball of a belly—sits behind the wheel of his Ford Escape with a bath towel tucked into his shirt and draped down across his lap. Cradling a bowl of fresh fruit and yogurt between his legs, he shovels spoonfuls with one hand while steering his way, with the other, to a storage unit on the outskirts of Waikiki. It’s a

personal errand on a day otherwise dedicated to playing host in this sunlit nirvana to a pasty mainland journalist. “I’m always on the edge of time. I can never quite get on time. So quite often I eat in my car,” Amos says cheerfully. “But it’s caused me a few bug problems,” he adds, reaching, without embarrassment, behind the driver and passenger seats for a pair of roach motels alarmingly close to hanging their “No Vacancy” signs. Chalk it up to island life. That, and to the pride Amos takes in being an open book. “Ten books,” he’s quick to remind me. In the decades since he sold his cookie empire, the inexhaustibly verbose pitchman has become a philosopher king, a lecturecircuit staple whose stack of motivational books includes titles like Man With No Name: Turn Lemons Into Lemonade and Watermelon Magic: Seeds of Wisdom, Slices of Life. When you peddle advice for so many years, those messages and fruity metaphors become your vocabulary. “Life is spirit; life is energy,” Amos says often through-

out the day. Other earnest aphorisms require the aid of Google Maps: “Every move we make and every breath we take is leading us somewhere.” “The moment is what matters. You’re always here, you’re never there. There is no there, so you’re always here.” Everywhere he looks, Amos sees the universe at work. As our loop around the island begins, the first hit of beauty he shares with me is Hanauma Bay, an awe-inspiring nature preserve swimming with turtles, trumpet fish, and snorkelers. Cruising the filled-to-capacity parking lot, he eyes an open space. This is not dumb luck, it’s faith in the flow. “You see?” Amos says, assuredly. “The sign said LOT FULL, and we could have just kept going, missing this beautiful opportunity. But we entered the lot and drove right into a spot. So there’s life again, man.” Remarkably, the same thing happens up the road at a South Shore lookout called the Halona Blowhole. “You see?” says Amos, barely able to

THE COOKIE THAT MADE AMOS FAMOUS Despite folklore from the Famous Amos heyday, the “secret” recipe for Wally’s world-beating cookie came directly from the back of a Nestlé Toll House bag. “Everyone’s chocolate chip cookie derives from the recipe Ruth Wakefield created in the early ’30s,” he says. “The secret is in who is baking them. Everybody’s cookies taste different, because life is not flour and sugar. It’s spirit; it’s energy.” It’s Wally’s oddball pointers, too. 2 2 ½ 1 ¾

medium eggs sticks salted butter teaspoon salt teaspoon baking soda cup brown sugar

¾ 1 2¼ 1 1

cup granulated sugar teaspoon pure vanilla extract cups all-purpose flour cup pecans cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1. Put eggs, butter, salt, baking soda, sugars, and vanilla extract into a stand mixer. Mix at low speed for 1 minute. Increase to medium speed for another minute, then to high for 4 minutes. 2. With the mixer off, add flour, then blend at medium speed for 2 ½ minutes. 3. Rather than chop the pecans, the “cookie man” prefers to break them by hand. Fold them into the batter with the mixer set to low. 4. “The chocolate chips are the last thing to go in,” says Wally, who, again, recommends a low mixer speed. 5. Here’s where Wally becomes … Wally. He refrigerates the batter overnight, in an 8-inch square, plastic container.

6. The next day, cut batter into 8-inch by 2-inch rectangles. Sprinkle with flour, and, using two hands, roll on a countertop until each rectangle is a snake-like 1 inch in diameter. Re-refrigerate. 7. Preheat oven to 350 (electric) or 375 (gas). Lightly coat a nonstick, lipped cookie sheet with Pam, then pinch off 1-inch bits of rolled cookie dough, placing them in six rows of 10. Don’t be perfectionist about the shape of each dollop. 8. Bake for about 12 minutes. “You want them as brown on the top as they are on the bottom,” Wally says. The finished cookie should be the size of a half-dollar, and crispy. Wally, a bad numbers guy, hasn’t a clue how many cookies this recipe will make.

conceal his shaman’s glow, “if you flow with the universe, it opens spaces for you. All you have to do is drive into them.” This overreach for cosmic meaning hits its delirious peak when, midday, over lunch in Lanikai, a luxe enclave on Oahu’s windward coast, Amos decides to spoon the leftover sauce of capers and butter from our calamari appetizer onto his grilled ahi entrée. “You see that?” he says, tucking into the fillet. “I hadn’t planned that. I hadn’t even thought of that until a second before I did it. The waitress was going to take it away, and I thought, That would be nice on my fish. And it is! That’s where life is maximized: When you can have that type of insight and respond to it right away. Life appears second by second, man.” If this robust positivity is cumulatively dizzying, it’s infectious in spurts. At Buzz’s, home of the mystical capers, he gifts the waitstaff not with pearls of wisdom but with cookies. “Are you Wally?” huffs our server, leaning on the table in mock outrage. “I’ve got a bone to pick with you. How is it that you come into my restaurant and feed me instead of the other way around?” You see Amos’ overflowing generosity in the way he responds to the giddy tourists and island natives who approach him every day and in his decades-long commitment to charitable work for programs like Literacy Volunteers of America. He was the national spokesman for that vitally important organization for 23 years, and to this day the man in the funny hat routinely reads to

The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated landmasses on Earth, and “oceans apart” effectively describes Amos’ relationship with his children. children at the public library in nearby Kailua. His close friend and attorney, Roger Epstein, tells a story that epitomizes sometimes weird, sometimes wonderful Wally World: “We were at the Unity Church in Waikiki, where Wally is a member, and we’re talking to this guy. He’s not quite homeless but he’s close, you know? And as we’re talking to him a couple of the guy’s teeth fall onto the floor. The next day, Wally calls me up and says, ‘Rog, we gotta buy the guy some new teeth. If I put in X dollars, would you put in Y?’ I mean, he hardly knows this guy, and the next day all he wanted to do was come up out of his pocket for him. So we bought the guy new teeth. That’s the kind of person Wally is.”

He’s ringing in from more than a continent away in Brooklyn. At rest in the parking lot of Public Storage earlier in the day, Amos is delighted but surprised. They chat for 10 minutes before the senior Amos abruptly ends the call. “That’s my oldest son, Mike. He’s a great guy, but that’s the first time he and I have spoken in maybe a year,” he says a little impatiently. “I called to wish him a happy birthday in April, and he didn’t call me back. But we are who we are, man. And one of the biggest mistakes we make is feeling that we can tell other people how to live their lives.” Geographically, the Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated landmasses on Earth, and “oceans apart” pretty effectively describes Amos’ relationship with his children. Each of them— Michael, 54; Gregory, 51; Shawn, 46; and Sarah, 30—has struggled intensely to make sense of a

painful contradiction at their father’s core. The same benevolent man who greets strangers with warm embraces, and whose baked goods and inspirational talks on the need to power through hard times have lifted innumerable lives, has been incapable of walking the talk with the people closest to him. The line between resolute positivity and deep-seated denial can be a fine one, and despite an adult life rife with serial acts of abandonment and infidelity—with three failed marriages in his wake and grown children still astonished by their father’s self-absorption and callousness—Amos is so determinedly “in the moment” that he can’t be bothered to reckon with the past. “It’s a bucket of ashes,” he’s fond of saying. “You gotta get on with your life.”

B

ORN IN TALLAHASSEE, Florida, on July 1, 1936, Amos lived with his mother and father in a three-room house in a segregated section of town called Smokey Hollow. His parents’ relationship was distant. Wallace Sr. labored at the local gas plant; Ruby worked as a housekeeper. Churchgoing and fellowship were central to their lives, but that didn’t stop Amos’ mother from being abusively critical of her only child—and beating him mercilessly. “The beatings weren’t regular,” Amos remembers. “I wasn’t a bad boy. It’s just that Ruby’s standards were so high that if you deviated at all … There was no being right. I could never have been right with Ruby.” Saturdays were spent with his father, who’d once a month take his son for a haircut, and regularly plant him on a stranger’s porch while he climbed the stairs to consummate one of his many extramarital flings. The marriage went to pieces when Amos was 12, and his parents shipped him north to New York, to live with his Aunt Della in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood. The separation from his folks felt like freedom. “I had been to visit

F3_wally_JM.indd 75

Aunt Della before,” says Amos, “and I was excited to go to New York. I was excited, also, because I didn’t have to worry about those beatings anymore.” Friendships came easy to him; high school did not. In 1954, at age 17, Amos dropped out and enlisted in the Air Force. After stints in wintry Upstate New York and racially charged Biloxi, Mississippi, he was stationed in blissed-out Oahu, whose soothing trade winds he never wanted to leave. “I was going to get discharged here,” he recalls, “but for the last months of my tour I got transferred to San Francisco. From there, I figured I’d briefly visit New York. I ended up staying for 10 years.” Within 12 months of his return to the city, he’d met, impregnated, and married his first wife, Maria Lefore—and the hustle was on. Michael was born in 1959; Gregory in 1962. With a family to support, Amos used his natural swagger and fierce work ethic to ace a stockroom gig at Saks Fifth Avenue, a job he eventually quit out of suspicion of being underpaid because of the color of his skin. He pounced on an opportunity in the mailroom at the William Morris Agency, which, at the time, was under political pressure to hire black trainees. In a Biography Channel documentary about Amos that aired in 2001, legendary talent agent Bernie Brillstein testified to Amos’ tenacity and X factor: “Wally drew attention in a room. He made sure of that. He was tall; he was thin. He always seemed to be dressed well and differently. He was just a driven guy who knew he was going somewhere.” William Morris made Amos the first black agent in its history, a job that put him in charge of booking shows for a glittering constellation of rising pop and soul superstars: Marvin Gaye, Simon & Garfunkel, and Diana Ross & the Supremes among them. Amos was feeling imbued with some sparkle himself, stepping out on his wife, Maria, without hesitation or guilt. She’d have none of it.

8/12/13 10:28 AM

Faced with a decision to either commit or walk, Amos walked, divorcing Maria in 1966—just in time to marry an exotically beautiful aspiring singer named Shirley Ellis. Amos’ third son, Shawn, was born in September 1967. A month later, Amos relocated his new family to Los Angeles, leaving behind 8-yearold Michael and 5-year-old Gregory. He ditched the Morris Agency, too, having hit their glass ceiling for African-Americans and deciding to go it alone as a personal manager. The gamble was disastrous from the start; clients of the caliber he was accustomed to working with never materialized. Amos allayed his anxiety by making chocolate chip and pecan cookies from his Aunt Della’s recipe, the same treats that enchanted him as a 12-year-old boy. Or so goes the legend that has sold billions of Famous Amos cookies. That story was baked. “I had a meeting with one of my clients, an

Loyalty ranks high in any recipe for life. So does esteem for one’s self. But from whom would Amos have learned these things? actress named Shari Summers,” Amos remembers more accurately, “and she broke out chocolate chip cookies she had made. I tasted them and, oh my god. Years before, Aunt Della had stopped sending cookies to me, and at that moment I realized I could make ’em myself, so I asked Shari for the recipe. I thought she was going to say it was some deep, dark secret. It turns out it was right off the back of the Nestlé Toll House

bag. I went straight to the supermarket, and, sure enough, there it was.” With his management company limping along, Amos looked for anything to give him a leg up with the power brokers he was courting. Used as an aromatic calling card, his homemade cookies—bite-size, crispy, and bulging with pecans and chocolate chips—made more of an impression than his client list. Less savory were Amos’ unchecked infidelities, which opened fissures in his second marriage. If the fundamental demands of marriage were too much for him, what surfaced next was even further beyond his capacity. Shirley, after a string of nervous breakdowns, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, a form of mental illness that many years later caused her to take her own life. Confronted, again, with the hard work of family and commitment, Amos again walked away. How does he explain such devastating indiffer-

ence today? He doesn’t. He won’t. He can’t. “I’m not that guy anymore,” he says, pushing the vegetables around his plate at Buzz’s. “I have reflected on that behavior, and the question I ask myself is, how long do I need to reflect on that behavior?” Shawn Amos no longer talks to his father, but in a deeply revealing diary called “Cookies & Milk” that he wrote for the Huffington Post in 2011 he tried to locate the insight that eludes his dad and, Shawn suggests, other AfricanAmerican men of his dad’s age: “Men of my father’s generation were perpetual hustlers, always on the make and always on the move. The world was theirs to take—if they were not taken first …. These were men who started families with no knowledge of how a family is held together. As boys, they watched their own fathers withstand humiliation in their own towns and workplaces until they slipped away with other women to new lives in other places.” Foundering professionally and emotionally, and piling up debt, Amos needed another hustle, fast. With his cookies a runaway hit in the suites of Hollywood, he lunged at a suggestion made to him by Quincy Jones’ secretary: Why not make a business of it? With $25,000 in seed money— including $10,000 from Amos’ pal Marvin Gaye—the Famous Amos Cookie Company opened its doors on Sunday, March 9, 1975. A little more than a decade and a half later, the business— flush with sales from grocery chains, convenience stores, and vending machines—was sold to the President Baking Company for a stunning $61 million. That kind of success attests to Amos’ savvy for sweets, and Haleiwa, home of his favorite ice cream shop, is our next stop. Slowly walking the town’s main drag,

Amos has the aura of a titan of industry—at least one who carries a kazoo, and to the sun-hammered vacationers who flock to him. “My husband says you’re Famous Amos. Is it true?” gushes a mother, trailed by her two mildly confused teenage daughters, to whom Amos hands his business card. “Can I get a picture with you?” asks a bikinied twentysomething

waving her hands and iPhone. The meet-and-greet achieves existential surreality when an elfin, visibly disoriented island native not a day under 80—shirtless, short a handful of choppers, and more deeply tanned than the Situation—approaches, pushing a bicycle, and gets right up in Wally’s grill. “Are you Famous Amos?” he mutters.

Sated and strolling back to his car, the cookie man is pleased— and more than a little bemused. “These people are nice to me because they think I’m a celebrity,” he says, pushing back his watermelon hat. “They like me because they think I’m rich. What they don’t know,” he adds, laughing, “is that I don’t have a pot to p--- in or a window to throw it out of.”

H

IS REALTOR probably refers to it as a onebedroom, but “studio” best describes the 800-square-foot apartment that has been Amos’ home for the past two years. For the bulk of his threeplus decades in Oahu, Amos and his third wife, Christine—the mother of his youngest child, Sarah—lived in a five-bedroom, four-

and-a-half bath spread on one of the largest lots in exclusive Lanikai. Their 32-year marriage ended in divorce in November 2011, a victim of predictable drift and Amos’ even more predictable philandering. The couple moved to Hawaii in 1977, when Amos and his nascent cookie company were on a soaring trajectory. “Christine and I were new together,” he says, stationed in front of a stand mixer in his efficiency kitchen the day after our island jaunt. Stripped of his ornate hat and festive neckwear, Amos looks his age. A little weary, a little wrinkled, understandably tired. Some of the weight is from the tugof-war he’s having with his fourth wife, Joy, who’d like to be home today but has surrendered the place to the cookie man and his note-taking apprentice. “I remembered how much I loved Hawaii from my days in the Air Force,” Amos continues, “and I wanted to move back. Christine said, ‘Oh, you’re crazy.’ So we were both right—I am crazy. But we moved to Hawaii.” That meant leaving 10-year-old Shawn behind in L.A. to caretake his severely unstable mother. Theirs weren’t the only needs Amos left unmet. He turned out to be an atrocious businessman—worse still, one with an ego. As he traveled the world on the wings of his Famous Amos fame, the company— badly underfinanced and poorly managed—was in free fall. Borrowing frantically to keep it aloft, Amos had so completely leveraged his stake in Famous Amos that when he finally relinquished ownership of it in 1985, he made not a penny. If that weren’t devastating enough, the eager-to-please guy in the Panama hat signed away all rights to his name and likeness. The business implications were lethal. Didn’t he realize what he was doing? “I did to some degree,” he says, spooning ingredients for a

batch of chocolate chip and pecan cookies into the bowl of his KitchenAid. “What I didn’t realize is I didn’t have to sign it. I didn’t have an attorney with me saying, ‘We can change this; we can amend that.’ I just chose to go along.” He sighs deeply. “That’s a fault I have.” With Christine at his side, Amos spent the next couple of decades trying to catch lightning in a bottle again, launching one cookie venture after another. In 1991, Wally Amos Presents Chip and Cookie was started up—and was almost immediately shut down by a lawsuit that dragged on for four-and-a-half years. Contractually, he was prohibited from using his name. So a year later Amos relaunched Chip and Cookie under the cheeky but tone-deaf banner Uncle Noname’s Cookie Company. It filed for Chapter 11 in 1996. Somewhere lost in the batter was another flop called Aunt Della’s. In 1998, Keebler gobbled up the Famous Amos Cookie Company and, in a gesture of goodwill, temporarily brought Amos into the fold as a spokesman for his old brand. They also agreed to legally let him have “Wally” back—as long as the name wasn’t used to sell cookies. Uncle Wally’s Muffins are still sold in Walmart stores, but Amos’ small stake in that company went to Christine in the divorce. The couple’s last stab was a pair of local Chip and Cookie stores: one in Kailua, the other in Waikiki. Both were shuttered in 2010. As a parting shot, Amos was sued for $108,000 in unpaid rent. The guy whose only steady source of income is a Social Security check, and whose current debt is as steep as nearby Diamondhead, is sanguine about it. “I don’t have $108,000,” he says. “At some point, I’m either going to have to pay it or hope they show me leniency.” Amos dips his finger into the bowl of batter, which has been

taking shape as we talk. “Look at this, man,” he says, momentarily transported by the sight and feel of an old friend. “It’s a rich cookie dough. I mean, that’s Rolls-Royce, Gucci, Chanel. Have I told you about Recipes For Life?” It’s the marketing credo he hopes will help platform Amos 9.0—or whatever the number is. For the past year he’s been hustling to get

Wamos Cookies off the ground. It not only rhymes with famous, it uses the Famous Amos recipe dating back to 1975, before one corporate behemoth after another (Kellogg now owns the brand) dumbed down the gourmet cookie with cheaper ingredients. “On my worst day I wouldn’t be able to sell what they’re making,” he says about the snack now a staple of most every

vending machine in America. “I couldn’t give that cookie away.” It’s a sharp indictment, especially from a man whose dignity is so wrapped up in the adoration afforded him each day because of that cookie’s enduring popularity. Loyalty ranks high in any recipe for life. So does esteem—for one’s self and for others. But from whom would Amos have learned these things? When the subject of his mother and father comes up, he disappears for a minute, then returns with a small spice bottle that he sets before me. The cap reads, “Your Fine Taste Is Showing.” Inside the bottle are Ruby’s ashes. “Remember when I told you we put some of her in the ocean?” he says. “Well, here’s the rest.” Amos’ mother eventually followed her son to New York, and then to L.A. She died in 1994, as disapproving and terrifying as ever. Did he ever see his father again? “Once,” he says, almost inaudibly. “I was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, in Biloxi, and I went to Tallahassee for a weekend. Some friends were headed in that direction, so I caught a ride, and I saw him.” Picking up one of his business cards, Amos absently begins sweeping into a small pile the loose sugar scattered across the counter. “I wanted my dad to buy me a jacket, but he wouldn’t. I always wanted my dad to give me something, but he never gave me anything, really. So we—I never— I never saw him after that.”

I

’M WORRIED about my father, and I’m looking for a way that I can take care of him,” Greg Amos says. He’s on the phone from his home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he works as a freelance writer. Greg doesn’t remember feeling angry when his father took off on him, at age 5. His fury didn’t surface until he reached 30.

8/9/13 11:38 AM

“To me,” he says, “turning 30 represented becoming a true adult, a time when you’re supposed to be taking care of yourself. Well, I wasn’t taking care of myself because I always had a longing to be cared for by the one parent that never took care of me, which was my father. So when I turned 30, I went into a fairly deep depression, and a lot of feelings surfaced from when I was 5 and 6. I recognized that I felt abandoned by him.” Greg wrote a letter, which his father brings up twice in our conversations together—telling the story exactly the same way both times. “The letter said, I will never, ever, EVER see you or speak to you again in this life,” the senior Amos recalls. “But I knew I’d done nothing wrong. And I knew it would be just a matter of time before Greg came around.” Recounted over the phone, Wally’s words throw Greg into spasms of laughter. “My father will frequently say, ‘I’m not responsible for what happened in the past.’ Even 30 years ago, in his first book, he was saying a different Wally did X, Y, and Z. But I no longer expect my father to understand my feelings. At this point in my life I’ve made a conscious decision to talk to and spend as much time with him as I can. I’m at a stage where what is healthy for me is to voice my feelings as they arrive and not keep them in. At the moment, he seems to appreciate it. Whether or not it changes his m.o., I can’t tell you.” Greg, twice divorced, last saw his father in May. Greg’s brother Mike, a divorced father of three, keeps only a light touch with his dad. Sarah, Wally’s youngest, wasn’t comfortable talking to me for this story. But she and her father occasionally chat, and after nearly eight years at ABC News she has embraced family by partnering with her half-brother

Shawn in a digital-content company called Freshwire. Even Shawn, who has three kids with his second wife, seems to be coming to grips with the complexity of loyalty and legacy. He won’t talk to his father, but he didn’t get in the way when Piper, his 12-year-old daughter, had a special request for her father’s father. As we were wending our way around the distant island, which,

with its eruptive vitality, jagged contours, and deep Pacific blues, mirrors the man who settled there 36 years ago, Amos reached for his phone. “You gotta hear this, man.” It was a message from Piper, from last spring. A thousand poets could write a thousand words and still not capture the unfettered beauty and air of expectancy in the voice of the grandchild Amos

hasn’t seen in three, four, maybe five years. He can’t remember. “Hi Grandpapa!” the message goes. “It’s Piper! I’m just calling to ask you, um … Career Day is coming up at my school, and I was wondering if you could send a video of yourself talking about the Famous Amos company and maybe send some cookies for our class. So please call me back. I love you so much, and I miss you. Bye-bye.”

W

ALLY AMOS seems to be in good hands. At 77, he’s finally figured out that cookies and promotion, not business, are what he knows best. On Wamos Cookies, he’s got eager and experienced partners who, for starters, have reworked the brand’s flavorless name. This month, The Cookie Man Cookies will be available at Los Angeles– area Costco stores, and the hope is a lucrative QVC deal will follow. Apparently, our interview and the not always comfortable looking back has paid dividends, too. When I return to the mainland there’s a voicemail waiting for me, left minutes before I’d departed Oahu. It’s Amos, flying high once again. “Hey John, it’s Wally! I feel really in charge, man. I feel so clear in my confidence. Everything is surging back into my body. You have been a catalyst for this resurrection of Wally Amos, and I am indebted to you. I have an idea that something big is getting ready to happen. It’s coming on, and it’s going to be so wonderful. I’m telling you, this is it! I see a best-selling book and a movie and all the stuff that comes after. I feel better than I’ve felt in ages. So take care, man, and have a safe trip. Mahalo and aloooo-HAAAA!”

mong the health issues unique to men, prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent, with a new case occurring every 2.2 minutes and affecting approximately 1 in 6 men over a lifetime. The good news is that it’s highly curable if caught early enough. But debate rages over whether more harm than good is being done to men who undergo regular screenings, which may lead to unnecessary biopsies and either surgical removal of their prostate gland, radiation or ablation therapy of the entire prostate. While the vast majority of prostate cancers are so slow-growing that they may never cause a problem, treatments that target the entire prostate often affect the sensitive nerves surrounding the prostate, potentially causing impotence and incontinence. Hope has emerged for men (who

DIRECT FROM THE DOCTOR: STEVEN F. HOTZE, M.D. It is no secret that men experience changes in life as they age. A couple of extra gray hairs are to be expected, but fatigue, weight gain, depression, brain fog, memory loss, sleep disturbances and low libido could be more than just common signs of getting older. These are usually common symptoms of a decline in testosterone levels. Testosterone is the dominant male hormone and is also the driving force behind assertiveness, sexual desire, self-confidence and motivation. In its absence, you may not “feel like yourself” anymore. If this sounds like you, take responsibility for your hormones, health and happiness. He uses MRI to give an accurate picture of where the tumor is, then, rather than removing the entire prostate gland, he zaps away the cancer with a specialized laser device. “Our approach pairs the most advanced MRI imaging to identify cancer-suspicious areas in the prostate and the most advanced laser technology to remove them, with virtually no risk of impotence or incontinence,” Walser says. Of course, men should always be alert to signs and symptoms of other types of cancer for which they’re at risk. AAccording to the American Cancer Society, the 10 most diagnosed cancers in men of all races per 2013 estimates are prostate, lung, colorectal, urinary bladder, melanomas of the skin, kidney, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, oral cavity and pharynx, leukemia and pancreas. These six symptoms/signs, DR. A key sign is that cancer fatigue/weakness does not usually improve with rest. 6) Pain: Certain characteristics of cancer pain include gnawing abdominal pain, stomachaches, bone pain and aching or heaviness in the groin, hips, thighs or abdomen. Any pain that is unexplained or worsens, especially over a short period of time, needs a doctor’s evaluation. Cardiovascular disease represents an even more sweeping health threat for men. Some studies have shown that regular tai chi can help those with balance disorders and improve muscle strength and overall well-bring. It goes without saying that any medical or therapeutic treatment can be undermined by a lack of adequate sleep. It has been reported that there are up to 18 million Americans affected by sleep apnea, and men are more likely to suffer from it. In addition, the American College of Physicians reports that about 80–90 percent of people with sleep apnea go undiagnosed. Those numbers mean proper evaluation and treatment options are widely missed, which can then lead to daytime headaches, irritability, poor concentration and more serious health risks such as heart attack, stroke, hypertension and possibly diabetes. With sleep centers from coast to coast, Eos Sleep offers a variety of specialized services for the diagnosis and treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. In-office treatments for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea include: 1) Pillar Procedure: Small polyester rods are implanted in the soft palate of the patient’s throat to stiffen the soft palate, lending support and keeping it from totally relaxing in order to curb snoring during sleep. 2) Celon Method: This procedure uses radiofrequency energy in the form of heat. Several small areas in the nasal turbinates or the soft palate are treated. Each area treated takes 4–10 seconds. The Eos Sleep centers also offer a number of at-home treatments that serve as alternatives. Diagnostic testing includes Home Sleep Testing, which is administered at home, making it very convenient for patients to get a diagnosis.

Statistically, the Right at Home team offers the home field advantage, with decades of healthcare experience, over 300 operating franchise locations in six countries, and a 12.7% year-over-year revenue increase record, even during a recession.3‡

“Our last venture was helping to build a company that did extremely well financially,” Tom said. “but at the end of the day, did we improve lives?” After painstakingly researching the competitive senior home care market, the Bollums found that a Right at Home franchise was the winningest franchise team with a long-time record of upward mobility. ging is associated with many physical changes in men: loss of strength, endurance, energy and drive. Gary Kehoe, the founder and CEO of Dreambrands, formed the nutritional supplement company in part due to his struggles to continue taking part in his favorite outdoor pursuits. His preventive health strategy for men to turn back the clock is a three-part process: 1) Exercise: Begin with a plan to exercise more, whether walking, jogging, hiking, biking or signing up for a gym. Regular exercise is very important for strengthening the heart and lungs—what we refer to as cardio care. Secondly, exercise is beneficial to major organs, especially our most valued organ, the brain. 2) Nutrition and Diet: Simply put, you are what you eat. Start by eliminating simple sugars from your diet, which are most responsible for inflamma-

tion, high glycemic responses and insulin spiking. Increase consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts; basically, replace simple sugars with healthier, non-processed sources of proteins and fiber. 3) Supplementation: Men’s

formulations are an easy way to naturally increase energy at a cellular level, help manage stress and combat free radicals with rich levels of antioxidants. Dreambrands’ Mdrive formulas are custom compounds to help ensure a balanced blend of herbal extracts and minerals for the purpose of preventive health, energy, strength and vitality. Whether you’re a high-level athlete or a weekend warrior, the importance of supporting your joint health through all necessary avenues has already been established. Staying in the game can seem nearly impossible after age, injury and pain take their toll on your joints. Play Again is a cutting-edge liquid oral joint supplement that supplies high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, the main component of joint fluid that deteriorates as we age. Daily use of this nutraceutical provides hydration, lubrication, viscosity and elasticity to joints, cartilage,

Athletes such as ex–pro cyclist Slade Smiley and Kevin Robinson, a BMX legend who still competes at the age of 41, use Play Again as a preventive measure to keep their joints lubricated while curbing the effects of aging. Dr. Pat Kersey, a Sports Medicine Physician at St. Vincent Sports Performance in Carmel, and the medical director of USA Football, reports improvement in 70 percent of his patients who have used Play Again. “Play Again has demonstrated effectiveness at improving range of motion, elasticity, pliability and stability within the joints and surrounding tissues,” Kersey says.

hile engaging in preventive health can make a huge difference for anyone, it’s even more vitally important to get necessary screenings and tests as we age. Unfortunately, men are notorious for avoiding trips to the doctor, according to in-home care organization Right at Home, which provides a variety of services to the elderly and others in need of assistance. Need proof? A 2007 survey taken by the American Academy of Family Physicians showed that more than half (55 percent) of the men surveyed had failed to receive a physical exam from their primary care physician for at least a year between visits. So why don’t real men go to the doctor? Old-school masculine

beliefs are a primary culprit, creating a reluctance to take a proactive approach to their health care; typically, this means not seeking help until they’re already sick. In many cases, men need that push from a loved one, companion or caregiver to overcome that ingrained behavior and understand they can’t fix themselves. The main point to

KEEPING THE WEIGHT OFF Maintaining a healthy weight represents one of the most important positive predictors of overall health for men. Body mass index (BMI) is a calculation that determines body fat; numbers between 25 and 29.9 fall within the “overweight” range, while a number at 30 or higher falls within the “obese” range. Access the BMI calculator at cdc.gov to help determine if you’re at risk. Another method for men to gauge a healthy weight is to measure waist size. A waist circumference of more than 40 inches for males can be an indicator of potential obesity-related conditions down the road.

“BUT I DON’T FEEL NORMAL!” Carol’s Story I always thought I had a thyroid problem. Ever since the first set of symptoms started revealing themselves, which began right after the birth of our third child, I knew something was off. Exhaustion began to slowly creep up on me until it finally consumed me. It was draining. I have never experienced anything quite like it. No matter how many naps I took or how long I slept, it was still there. At first I blamed the fact that I was raising three children and holding down a full time job…who wouldn’t be exhausted? Then the next phase of symptoms began to roll in. I was cold all the time! It would be August in Texas and I’d be wearing a jacket to work. My hair and eyebrows began to thin out. Oh, and the brain fog. I honestly thought my memory loss was the first sign that I had Alzheimer’s. Over coffee with a friend, something I was consuming way too much of, I discussed with her what was happening to me. She said that it sounded like a thyroid issue, something I had always thought. Naturally, I went to my doctor, explained my symptoms and told him that I thought I was hypothyroid. He ran some tests, took blood work and scheduled my recheck. Two weeks later he told me that my blood work was normal. “But I don’t feel normal,” I told him. “Are you sure those results are right?” His answer was “yes,” and he offered me a prescription for an antidepressant. I told him, “No way!” While online, I stumbled upon the Hotze Health & Wellness Center website. It felt like it was written for me. I discovered that they used an innovative approach in diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. I scheduled my appointment and was blown away by their professionalism. They explained to me that my symptoms were very common in women in my age group. They discovered that I had an imbalance in my female hormones that adversely affected my body’s ability to use thyroid hormones. I was prescribed bio-identical progesterone, estrogen and natural thyroid medication.

Within two months, my life was transformed. My energy was back. I can keep up with my kids, husband and job. My fading memory returned to normal and I was finally able to sleep soundly again. THE CENTER FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE A NON-SURGICAL TECHNIQUE TO FIGHT AGAINST ARTHRITIS AND SPORTS INJURIES

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right). This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past nine years.

medical, in-home senior care. Their approach promotes educating their clients and the community about preventive methods to stay healthy and age comfortably, including strategies that encourage men to be proactive about their health. Four important tests they advise to discuss with your doctor include: 1) Prostate exam: More American men get prostate cancer than any other type of cancer. The jury is still out about regular screening. Talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of having a prostate exam, taking into account your age and risk factors. 2) Colonoscopy: This procedure allows doctors to see inside the large intestine to check for polyps, which are abnormal growths that could indicate colon cancer. Doctors recommend having your first colonoscopy at age 50, with follow-ups every 10 years if healthy or more frequently if something troubling shows up in the tests. 3) Eye test: Our vision can deteriorate as we age, making simple activities of past years (reading a novel before bed or merging safely onto the freeway) more difficult. Plan a visit to the ophthalmologist once a year to keep eyeglasses and contacts prescriptions up to date. 4) Regular physical: Blood pressure tests, reflex tests and other examinations performed during an annual physical are important determinants of your risk for cardiovascular disease and other debilitating conditions.

Saint Louis Art Fair

“The purpose of art,” opined Pablo Picasso, “is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” So shake off the cobwebs, and rejuvenate your spirit at the 20th annual Saint Louis Art Fair, featuring some of the best artists and artwork from around North America. This year’s theme is “Be a Piece of the Puzzle,” and the three-day event snaps together a wide range of fine art—oils, watercolors, sketches, chalk, sculpture, mixed media, and more, for sale and for public enjoyment—from nearly 200 acclaimed local, national, and international creators. While adults stomp their feet to live music on three stages and please their palates with gourmet appetizers and desserts from local eateries, children

Grapevine GrapeFest

In a fifth-season episode of I Love Lucy, the irrepressible Lucille Ball is drafted by a motley assortment of Italian women to crush grapes with her bare feet, and hilarity ensues. If you’ve ever been keen to re-enact the classic comedy moment, the 27th annual Grapevine GrapeFest is your golden opportunity, offering its 250,000 guests twominute contests to stomp the juice from 18 pounds of grapes, with winners receiving the coveted Purple Foot Award. If fancy footwork isn’t your glass of vino, you’ll cheer at the generous pours of Texas, West Coast, and international wines and premium craft beers at the largest wine festival in the Southwestern United States. Carnival rides for the kiddies, a champagne cork shoot-off, live music, good eats from local res-

Global Peace Film Festival

What’s so funny about peace, love, and understanding? To the producers of the 11th annual Global Peace Film Festival, absolutely nothing—unless, of course, you’re talking about the hilarious and moving Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley, a documentary profiling the comedy pioneer. With faith in the power of film as a catalyst for positive change in the world, the inspirational, sixday festival offers up 40 films and dozens of public filmmaker conversations at a range of venues in the Orlando and Winter Park area, providing a welcome respite from multiplex blockbusters banging the war drums between robots, monsters, and superheroes from Krypton. The filmmaking collective gathered here—a mix of marquee names and newbies alike—is more interested in promoting world peace in a cinematic fashion that is engaging and enter-

Play Me, I’m Yours: The Boston Street Piano Festival

Every aspiring musician plays some funky venues when they’re starting out, but if you’re angling to nab the Piano Man crown from the head of Billy Joel, how about tickling some ivories in a public park, bus shelter, train station, bridge, or ferry? Play Me, I’m Yours: The Boston Street Piano Festival, the brainchild of British artist Luke Jerram, includes the installation of more than 800 pianos in 36 cities worldwide, from New York to Sydney, Munich to Los Angeles. Jerram’s street piano initiative teams up with Beantown’s Celebrity Series to offer up 75 pianos at key public locations, each instrument bearing the simple instruction to passersby: “Play me, I’m yours.” Pianos are decorated by local artists and community-based organizations and are available for anyone in town to play round the clock until October 14. Event organizers encourage guests to upload their own performance clips, photos, and comments to the official website. Opening day festivities include area music students and celebrities playing the same song at the same time. “Heart and Soul,” anyone? Free; streetpianosboston.com

Nebraska’s Junk Jaunt

Endurance test or treasure hunt, it’s all a matter of perspective as regards the 10th annual Nebraska Junk Jaunt, billed as the best and friendliest long-distance garage sale in the world. With 500plus shopping destinations in more than 35 small towns and villages across a 300-mile span of the Cornhusker State, the three-day sale gives new meaning to the old maxim “shop ’til you drop.” In years past, more than 20,000 fun lovers, bargain hunters, collectors, vintage crafters, and adventure seekers have roamed and rummaged Highways 2 and 11, both scenic byways, for tchotchkes, bric-a-brac, and used goodies, accompanied by live music stations and delicious edibles from local vendors. It’s highly recommended, though not strictly necessary, that junk hunters —er, treasure seekers—download a copy of the 120-page Junk Jaunt Shopper Guide, featuring maps, vendor locations, and partial inventory, available at the event’s website. Whole Enchilada Fiesta

You really can have the whole enchilada—and eat it, too. After outdated equipment sidelined last year’s iconic preparation of the epic entrée, generous donors stepped up, and Las Cruces restaurateur Roberto Estrada is now ready to light 16 new propane burners under his massive placa (griddle) at the 33rd annual Whole Enchilada Fiesta. Each year, more than 40,000 hungry visitors flock to the Hadley Complex, where Estrada mixes 750 pounds of masa to make three ginormous corn tortillas, each measuring 10.5 feet in diameter. He layers the thin, round flatbreads with 125 pounds of grated cheese and 60 pounds of chopped onions before splashing the Mexican delicacy with 75 gallons of hot red chile

27

sauce. Extra-large eats aren’t the only thing drawing visitors from far and wide to this three-day street party. Saturday’s festivities include a parade, preceded by a 5K race and a fun run. You can also try your luck at huachas, a horseshoes-like game that involves tossing metal washers into a hole. Before the main attraction is sliced up on Sunday, an enchilada-eating contest tests taste buds as Estrada adds extra chilies to competition-grade chow. Last year’s winner downed 10 pounds of the tongue-burning dish. Now that’s a whole lotta enchilada. Admission $5 for adults, free for children under 7; enchiladafiesta.com NEW YORK CITY

The Medieval Festival

Rub the rust off thine armor, iron thy chain mail, gird thy loins, and polish up on ye chivalry as the 29th Annual Medieval Festival unveils its lavish, time-traveling event in the most authentic period setting this side of the Atlantic. The area around the Cloisters Museum in Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park is transformed into a Middle Ages market village where knights in armor, jugglers, jesters, magicians, musicians, storytellers, and puppeteers will perform while blacksmiths, manuscript illuminators, potters, and wood carvers ply their crafts. Plenty of “medieval” food and drinks will be available for purchase—steak-and-ale soup and dragon juice, anyone? The day, which is expected to attract 60,000 guests, also features falconry demonstrations and Chaucer readings and culminates in an action-packed jousting event between knights on horseback. So set aside your copy of The Canterbury Tales, hit the pause button on your Game of Thrones DVD, and venture forth into another world, another time, where swordplay, grand tilting, and (probably) shaved ice are in full abundance. Austin City Limits Music Festival

Music festivals are almost a dime a dozen these days, but the 12th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, running two weekends in October at Zilker Park, remains the gold standard, offering a diverse, muscular lineup featuring heavyweights like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Muse, Kings of Leon, Wilco, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, and supergroup Atoms for Peace, which includes members of Radiohead, R.E.M., and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Lionel Richie will even be on hand to headline and say, “Hello, is it me you’re looking for?” Side stages will feature Passion Pit, Queens of the Stone Age, Fun., Silversun Pickups, and Franz Ferdinand, along with a slate of handpicked local talent. More than a mere collection of top-notch performances, ACL becomes, for its run, a way of life. The 46-acre setup at Zilker Park, the crown jewel of Austin’s public green spaces, also offers an extensive art market, featuring work from regional creatives; tasty foods (including the legendary Hot & Crunchy Chicken Cone from local vendor The Mighty Cone); a kids’ play area; and a chance to donate to or volunteer with a number of worthy charities. Issaquah Salmon Days Festival

Each October, the small Pacific Northwest town of Issaquah, Washington—17 miles east of Seattle—depends on two things happening like clockwork: the leaves of the area trees brilliantly changing colors and the salmon returning to the creeks and historic downtown hatchery, launching the 44th Annual Issaquah Salmon Days Festival. Touted as one of the largest welcome-home parties in the world, more than 150,000 guests, presumably amped up on Omega-3 fatty acids, celebrate the yearly return of the spawning salmon who, in some cases, have been swimming at sea for nearly a decade. The Bisbee 1000 Great Stair Climb

Are you a stair master? There’s only one way to find out. Billed as the most unique fitness challenge in the nation, the Bisbee 1000 Great Stair Climb invites competitors to huff and puff their way up nine staircases comprising a “5K that feels like a 10K.” Originally crafted by the Work Projects Administration during the Great Depression, the series of staircases follows the mule paths worn into the terrain during the heyday of Bisbee’s copper-mining past. Today it offers a scenic setting for fleet-footed athletes. Launched in 1991, the event received the prestigious Governor’s Tourism Award for Special Events last year, and it draws 2,000 annual competitors, ranging in age from 5 to 87, often outfitted in funky costumes and playfully decorated running shoes. Part sports competition, part costume ball, with live music and bountiful food from local vendors, the Bisbee 1000 is a celebration of community spirit. The best views are available along the stairwells, where one gentleman recently proposed marriage to his girlfriend. Clearly, anything is possible on this great climb. Free; bisbee1000.org

This nonprofit helps young golfers grow. As “The Official Airline of Golf Lovers,” Southwest Airlines LUVs making golfers’ dreams come true—particularly when those golfers are young people. That’s why we are proud to be the Official Airline of the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, one of the most popular regularseason events on the Champions Tour. The tournament, which is internationally televised on the Golf Channel, takes place September 27–29 and is played in Carmel, California, at Del Monte Country Club and the world-famous Pebble Beach Golf Links. This competition’s unique format pairs 81 Champions Tour regulars (like World Golf Hall of Famers Bernhard Langer, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, and Hale Irwin) with 81 junior golfers from

The First Tee chapters across the country. The First Tee is a youth development organization that provides educational programs for kids and teens (ages 5–17) that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices, using the game of golf as a teaching platform. Independent research on The First Tee shows the longer participants stay involved, the more their confidence grows, both academically and socially. It’s truly a dream come true for these young men and women to play with Champions Tour greats. Southwest is proud to be a part of making this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity possible by providing transportation for The First Tee participants, many of whom do not have the financial means to travel to the event. Since it was founded in 1997, The First Tee has reached more than 7.6 million young people in five countries. With the goal of reaching an additional 10 million young people by 2017, The First Tee hopes to help these junior golfers become responsible young adults. That’s a goal that everyone can appreciate—golf lover or not. For more information or to get involved, visit thefirsttee.org. —Dave Ridley

Community Outreach + AIR-OMA THERAPY Kate Odorizzi’s post-injury rehab took place in a familiar environment.

Healing One of Our Own How a Flight Attendant benefited from the Airline’s generosity. Red and canyon blue. These colors are more to me than just elements of Southwest Airlines branding; they represent a feeling of coming home each and every time I step onboard. About two years ago, I was injured while performing my duties as a Flight Attendant. When I started my recovery journey at St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute in Spokane, Washington, I never imagined that I would be met with these familiar hues. In 2012, Southwest landed at St. Luke’s Community, a 2,200-square-foot therapy area where people recovering from injury or illness learn to be independent again in models of real-life settings. When I walked into St. Luke’s Community for the first time, I encountered a very familiar sight—the fuselage of a canyon blue plane. This particular plane, which has been converted into a therapy module, is the product of a special partnership between Southwest and St. Luke’s. Although Southwest may not have realized it at the time, their sponsorship of the airplane therapy module at St. Luke’s would be instrumental to the rehabilitation of one of their own

Employees: me. Practicing in a space that resembled my actual work environment was incredibly helpful, and it was encouraging to benefit from this unique real-world therapy. My therapy team helped me practice specific movements that I would need to be able to do on an actual plane, such as serving drinks, stowing luggage in overhead bins, and performing Safety checks. Not only did I regain my mobility, but I finished my rehabilitation with the confidence I needed to return to work. When I reported for duty for the first time after my therapy, it felt like I was home again. I was so excited to go back to work and be able to perform my duties as a Flight Attendant once more. I truly believe that without the amazing partnership between St. Luke’s and Southwest, my recovery would not have been as successful or as quick. Thank you, Southwest and St. Luke’s—you have truly given me and so many other patients the Freedom to Fly. —Kate Odorizzi

The “If” List

Arsenio Hall, if you had a superpower, what would it be? X-ray Vision!

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why? As a 5-year-old kid, I used to sit behind my dad in the pulpit of the church while he preached to the congregation. I’d love to sit behind him one more time. If you could be any fictional character, who would you be? Robin Hood If you could give your 10-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be? Enjoy your childhood, and stop thinking about your future career.

If you were born 100 years ago, what would you be doing? I’d be the village idiot, just like now. If you could have any other talent, what would it be? Possessing the voice of the late Luther Vandross. If you could rid yourself of one deeply personal fear, what would it be? Flying without a copy of Spirit. If you were to wake up next to any celebrity, who would it be? Sofia Vergara If you had coined a single phrase of wisdom, what would it be? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. This month, the stand-up comedian returns to late-night television with The Arsenio Hall Show.

What About You? If you could listen to only one album for the rest of your life, which would it be and why? Submit your answer at spiritmag.com/if. Our favorite responses will be published in an upcoming issue of Spirit.
