From its inception, the University of California, San Diego has attracted leading scholars with an entrepreneurial spirit and a penchant for risk taking. The freedom to cross boundaries and to create new disciplines fuels breakthrough research with global impact. Our visionaries are looking for the next discoveries that will benefit people around the world in all walks of life.

REINVENTING

Medicine Stealthily Delivering Drugs Targeted drugs that treat specific tissues are often attacked by the body’s immune system. Lianfang Zhang’s research group approaches the problem from an engineering perspective and bypasses the biology. They fool the immune system by using natural red blood cell membranes to camouflage nanosponges that deliver drugs and soak up toxins.

Lianfang Zhang, Ph.D.

Mending Damaged Hearts There is no established treatment for repairing the damage to cardiac tissue caused by the 785,000 new heart attack cases each year—yet. Karen Christman’s lab has developed a new injectable hydrogel that encourages cells to repopulate areas of damaged tissue, and to preserve heart function by forming a scaffold to repair tissue and increase muscle.

Karen Christman, Ph.D.

ADDRESSING

Climate Change Examining Global Policy Global warming is one of today’s greatest challenges and international policies to cut emissions are overdue. David Victor’s book Global Warming Gridlock explains why the world hasn’t made much diplomatic progress and explores new, effective strategies. His research has produced a roadmap to a lower carbon future through bottom-up initiatives at the regional, national and global level.

David Victor, Ph.D.

Peering Into Processes Many of the most important biological processes in the ocean take place at a microscopic scale, but when scientists remove organisms to study them, much of the information and its context are lost. Jules Jaffe is overcoming this challenge by developing several types of underwater microscopes that can image microorganisms in their natural settings without disturbing them.

Once seen as just for kids, these little bricks have become faves for grown-ups in a big way. Explore the trend with us, and feast your eyes on some remarkable labors of Lego-love.

The emotional wounds of war impact an alarming number of U.S. veterans, but typical treatments can be wanting. It’s time to shake up how we handle post-traumatic stress disorder—and one energetic doc is doing just that.

At Southwest Airlines, we spend a lot of time talking about a word you don’t hear very often in corporate America: “LUV.” We are the LUV airline—our New York Stock Exchange ticker symbol is LUV, and our home airport is Dallas Love Field—but to understand what it’s all about, you must look into the hearts of our People. After all, we like to say that we are not a Company of planes; we are a Company of People.

As the LUV airline, one of our favorite days of the year is Valentine’s Day. That’s when, every year, we pay tribute to a behind-the-scenes department at Southwest through the very special “Heroes of the Heart Award.” This distinction goes to a group of Employees who aren’t on the frontlines but are just as essential as our Pilots and Flight Attendants. We emblazon an aircraft with the Heroes of the Heart logo featuring

Customer Service in Action I received a letter praising one of our Customer Relations Telephone Representatives for a special connection that she made possible for a Customer. The gentleman was traveling with his future bride, and our Employee helped this couple with their wedding travel plans, going above and beyond to make all of the arrangements. The Customer was especially moved when our Employee contacted him two days after his trip to congratulate him and his wife on their marriage. She even sent the couple a gift. What a wonderful example of spreading the LUV!

the honored department’s name, and we hang a two-story banner in the lobby of our corporate Headquarters as a tribute to these Employees. If you happen to be flying with us on Valentine’s Day, you will notice decorations at the ticket counters and in the gate area, and we will offer a complimentary alcoholic beverage to anyone 21 or older. (Of course, sodas and snacks are always on the house.) While these may seem like relatively small gestures, the point is that we have a Culture built on LUV. It’s a People-centric Culture that is fueled by the 46,000 Southwest and AirTran Airways Employees. We’ve built our Brand from the inside out, starting by nurturing People in our Culture, and that fact manifests itself in the Customer Service that we provide. Outside groups and friends often ask me about our Culture—what makes it so unique and special? By definition, Culture is a way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization. For us, it’s really pretty simple. We ask that our Employees follow one rule above all others: The Golden Rule of treating others as you wish to be treated. Our Culture is not a program or initiative; rather, it is the sum of the hearts of our People. It’s our single greatest asset as a Company, and it’s built into the fabric of everything that we do. Thank you for allowing us to spread the LUV by serving you today!

Star of the Month

A I R T R A N FL I G H T AT T EN DA N T, AT L A N TA

“I am a Flight Attendant at heart,” says Erin Jett, an Atlanta-based AirTran Airways Employee. Erin, a lifelong Georgian, applied for a job with AirTran on the advice of her father. She knew nothing of the industry, but within a day of interviewing she was part of the AirTran Family and couldn’t have felt more at home. Since 2006, Erin has filled a number of roles in her career as a Flight Attendant, from facilitating training to being part of a unique group called the Sunshine Operations Squad, which supports Flight Attendants and prepares them to serve on international routes. Some of her most meaningful moments, however, have been times spent serving Customers. One experience in particular stands out. Erin once found a cellphone that had been left on the concourse. A contact for “Dad” was programmed into the phone, and Erin called the number. She learned that the phone belonged to a young boy and mailed it to him. Not long after, she received a thank-you note accompanied by a handmade gift. The note said, “I would shake your hand, but since you are 500 miles away I hope you will accept this hammock.” That moment remains pivotal in Erin’s approach to serving others. “Everything you do counts in the eyes of someone,” she says. Erin and her husband, David, enjoy life in Atlanta with their only “child,” a Maltipoo named Maggie Mae. Although David works outside the airline industry, he appreciates the privilege of being able to hop on a flight to visit his family in Ohio. An avid runner and baseball fan, Erin just completed her first half marathon and loves to cheer for her hometown Braves. She also boasts a remarkable collection of owl-themed objects that includes everything from knickknacks, scarves, and socks to bags and mugs decorated with the wise little creatures. It is Erin’s talents and commitment to serving others that made her a very wise choice for AirTran and now for Southwest. We couldn’t be prouder to shine this month’s spotlight on her. —Monica Van Slate

ON THE JOB

Now that he’s retired, Treg works to promote awareness for ALS.

18 SPIRIT FEBRUARY 2014

Even though Treg Charlton now lives in Cleveland, he has an equally strong connection to another Southwest Airlines destination: Kansas City, Missouri. In fact, Treg feels that the Southwest Employees in both his former and current hometown are “like family” to him, given his many years of flying out of each of those locations. As the recently retired regional director of real estate for CVS Pharmacy, Treg spent much of his career traveling extensively on Southwest to find new store locations for the nationwide pharmacy company. Treg’s Freedom Story began in 2002, and he has been an A-List Preferred Member of Southwest’s Rapid Rewards Frequent Flyer program for so long that he jokingly calls himself “Mr. A16.” He credits Southwest’s convenient schedule to cities in his territory with helping him achieve his “best years ever.” Treg also LUVs that two checked bags can fly free. But he says his top reasons for making Southwest his airline of choice are the fact that “Southwest has the best Crews anywhere” and that he always gets “service with a smile.” In 2010, Treg started what he calls his “second job” as the co-spokesperson for CVS’s annual campaign to raise funds for ALS research. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a relatively rare progressive neurodegenerative disease that has no known cure. Treg was diagnosed with ALS in March 2010 and has been a passionate advocate for ALS awareness since then, helping to raise more than $5 million in 2012 for research for a cure. “For some reason, I still have my voice,” he says. “I think the message was for me to use it.” Although his ALS is progressing, Treg remains optimistic and always looks for ways to count his blessings. Right now, his future plans include using his Companion Pass, along with the many Rapid Rewards Points he’s accrued, to spoil his wife, Dianne, and daughters, Audrey and Mia, by traveling to some of the places on their wish lists. One trip he especially looks forward to is a beach getaway to Cancún (via a shared itinerary on Southwest and subsidiary AirTran Airways). Treg, you’re our kind of Customer. Our wish is for your hopes and dreams to come true. —Sandy Nelson Price

SQUARE ROUTE

Legos show us how to build a vibrant future: brick by brick.

Dear Reader, In her story about the growing popularity of Legos among adults (starting on page 64), Melinda Mahaffey Icden wonders why the snapping together of these hard-edged playthings so captures the imagination. As someone who used Legos solely as weaponry in childhood (the blocks made for thrillingly unpredictable slingshot ammo), I am probably not qualified to answer. But I will anyway. The real genius of Legos, I would argue, is not in the snapping together but in the pulling apart. Unlike model airplanes, finger painting, education, or even life itself, Legos let you undo. As any writer will tell you, the skill in many a good work lies not just in creation but in redemption. Legos may help teach children that the true glory lies in the redo. Go ahead, snap those words and ideas and experiments together, kids. Then unsnap them, and see if you can do better. 20 SPIRIT FEBRUARY 2014

f4_edletter_bh.indd 20

Imagine if all of life were Legos—not hard to do if you have been to one of the half-dozen Legoland Discovery Centers in this country. Now imagine unsnapping certain parts of your life and doing them better. Personally, I would like to reassemble the bricks that make up my junior year in college, when … well, never mind. I mean, what if you could unsnap a jillion fast-food meals and cheap beers and stupid comments and hurt feelings, and then snap them back together into a shiny, perfect past? But, then again, maybe the past isn’t for unsnapping and resnapping. The future: That’s where the renewal takes place. So here’s to the resolutions we made last month, and to the colorful future we hope to cobble together in 2014 and beyond. Your own Legoland awaits. Get out there and play for real. —Jay Heinrichs Editorial Director PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS PLAVIDAL

Your Words

Dear Spirit,

My heart warmed when I read “Home for the Holidays” [Community Outreach] in the December issue. As an independent educational consultant who specializes in college placement, I appreciate Southwest offering free flights to students in need. Personally, Southwest has become my go-to airline thanks to the “Wanna Get Away” fares, which I recommend to client families when they need to visit colleges. The affordable fares and lack of change fees make it possible for students to consider schools that are not in their immediate area but might prove to be a better fit. Thank you, Southwest, for making a difference in the lives of others. —CL AIRE L AW CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

You summed up what Southwest is all about, Claire. Thanks!

BUSINESS PROPOSAL

I really enjoyed the recent article about Alex Sheen’s organization, Because I Said I Would [“The Every Day Action Hero,” November 2013], and found it to be particularly timely as a new year begins. As the message of keeping one’s word could certainly apply to the business world, I have suggested to the president of my company that we start a “Because I Said I Would” campaign for 2014. Thank you for the inspiration, and keep up the good work! —T R I S H A G R I M COCKEYSVILLE, MARYLAND

What a cool idea. What if we made promises instead of strategic plans? We’d love to know what other readers think about this. SPREADING THE LUV

I LUVed the article on Alex Sheen in the November issue of Spirit. Inspired by Alex, I resolved to tell the flight attendants on my plane how much I appreciated them. After I did so, their eyes lit up and huge smiles appeared on their faces. One of them told me, “We LUV our Southwest family and our customers that fly with us.” It is my wish that Alex’s ministry and Southwest Airlines will thrive in the year ahead. Thank you for such a refreshing piece of journalism. — G L E N N M AT T L A G E ROSWELL , NEW MEXICO

Your Words MMM ... MEMPHIS

My husband and I fly Southwest about once a month, and every time we find an article about a destination we are planning to visit in the next several months. I was especially happy to discover the one about Memphis [“Your Adventure In ...,” November 2013] as we are headed there soon. Maybe we’ll roast some marshmallows at the Memphis Botanic Garden! —ERIN ROEING B A R T L E T T, I L L I N O I S

Enjoy your trip, Erin! And let us know how those marshmallows taste. DOGGONE MEAN

This note is in response to “Groom For Improvement” by Jill Coody Smits [Business School, November 2013]. I LUV Southwest and always enjoy Spirit, but I was disappointed to read the following sentence: “Cyrus is too much of a showbiz pit bull to be chastened by bad press ... .” The pit bull

reference, I presume, is about fighting. Dogs indiscriminately lumped into the category of “pit bulls” have been inappropriately labeled as vicious and aggressive. Those of us who own bull terriers or other related breeds know that this discrimination is just plain wrong. I’m saddened that Spirit has further contributed to this delusion by choosing to publish such a statement. —MELANIE TIGHE T R A C Y, C A L I FO R N I A

As lovers of bull terriers ourselves, we thought the reference meant “dogged,” not “aggressive.” But in retrospect, “dogged” may be unfair to your average dog, not to mention the more persistent cat. In any case, we’ll avoid references to bull terriers except when we’re talking about bull terriers of course. SLOW AND STEADY

I was pleasantly surprised to see the article on John Cage’s song “As Slow As Possible” in the October 2013

issue [The Numbers]. My nowhusband’s wedding proposal was partially inspired by this song, and it certainly seemed like a good omen to see a mention of it as we flew to St. Louis for our wedding. Additionally, as a couple planning a wedding from afar, we certainly appreciated Southwest Airlines’ low fares and the flexibility to change plane tickets. Both helped us keep our budget in check! —A B R A LYO N S - WA R R E N WA S H I N G T O N , D.C .

At first we weren’t sure how a song that’s supposed to last 639 years would inspire a wedding proposal, but now we get it. Best wishes for a marriage that’s made to last. We just hope the relationship moves a little more quickly than the song does. CORRECTION

In our December 2013 issue, we neglected to mention that the photo featured on page 6 was taken at Las Vegas’ Neon Boneyard at the Neon Museum. We regret this error.

Good as Gold

What is it about the Olympics that, for two frigid weeks every four years, turns each of us into an expert on luging (“Another impressive run from Armin Zöggeler, bro!”) and curling (“Do I detect the notorious Manitoba tuck? Why, yes I do!”)? Of course, it has something to do with the thrill of watching the world’s best athletes test their mettle. But it’s more than that. It’s about vicariously living their dreams and reviving sometimes unfashionable national pride. It’s about the next day’s watercooler talk, and the pleasure of being bundled up on a sofa. Mostly, it’s about the joy of being at one with the world, when the universal language is … Whoosh!

Novak’s literary gems have graced The New Yorker. That, and his flashy showbiz résumé, should spell best-sellers list.

Arguably the most binge-watched show ever was showered with Emmy and Golden Globe noms in 2013.

The restless artist hasn’t been idle since 2008’s Modern Guilt. One-off experiments are fun, but Beck fans are rabid for a full LP.

The film, by the director of Sideways and The Descendants, has won critical raves and Oscar buzz.

Meyer Lemon Jam

“Last summer we got in a bunch of Meyer lemons for a private event. When the party was canceled, we ended up with about 50 pounds of lemons. So we said, ‘Let’s jam them!’ And we’re happy we did. Now that it’s winter and it’s really cold outside, we’ve got plenty of fresh jam, which makes us think of sunshine. “We have around 3,000 different spirits at Canon. No base spirit is overlooked, although we do tend to focus on the brown ones. The Coraje is a dark drink, with the rum being lengthened by the aperitif and accented with coffee notes. It was inspired by a traditional rumand-coffee drink from Spain called the Carajillo. Bonal works exactly as sweet vermouth does in a cocktail. In fact, if you don’t have any, you can sub in sweet vermouth if you dial back slightly on the coffee liqueur. Bitters make a drink more interesting. Technically, you can't make a cocktail—as defined by the inclusion of spirit, sugar, water, and bitters—without them.”

Life Coach Modern-day Renaissance man Alan Fox shares his simple secrets for personal and professional success.

1

Buy a Ticket “You can’t expect to win the lottery if you don’t first buy a ticket. Be an active participant in your own success,” Fox says. “Each of us has the power to effect change in our own lives. To be successful, we must understand that and not look too far outside of ourselves for solutions to problems.”

2

Know That Patterns Persist “Identify the behavior patterns of others in an effort to manage expectations. If a friend of yours is always late, you should expect that he will continue to be tardy, and adjust your schedule accordingly. By changing your expectations of when he will arrive, you save yourself time and undue frustration.”

f2_topfive_bh.indd 39

3

Catch Them Being Good “When you find a behavior that you like in someone, let them know. This is particularly relevant when it comes to children, but it can apply to anyone. Positive reinforcement is a very powerful thing, much more so than criticism.”

4

Watch the Belt Buckle “A great defensive tackle will tell you that good running backs can fake with their eyes and their heads and their shoulders, but they cannot fake with their belt buckles. Wherever the belt buckle is going, that’s where they’re going. Very often there’s a difference between what people say and what they do. If you want to discover a person’s true intentions, pay attention to his or her actions.”

Alan Fox is the author of People Tools: 54 Strategies for Building Relationships, Creating Joy, and Embracing Prosperity.

5

Don’t Force It “Typically, we go after the things we want in life. If I want to buy a car, I research it, save some money for the down payment, and then I buy it. But there are certain things you can’t plan for—for example, forming a relationship. Like catching a feather, understand that the circumstances have to be just right and, thus, are often out of your control.” Win One! Scan this tag or visit spiritmag.com/ peopletools for your chance to win one of 10 copies of Alan Fox’s book, People Tools.

Speed Trap Psychologist Stephanie Brown talks life in the fast lane, the havoc it wreaks, and how to fight back.

Stephanie Brown is the author of Speed: Facing Our Addiction to Fast and Faster—and Overcoming Our Fear of Slowing Down.

40 SPIRIT FEBRUARY 2014

f1_Q&A_bh.indd 40

Why do you say that many of us are addicted to fastpaced living? These days we are all tethered to our phones, our tablets, and our computers. Thanks to these devices, we have more information at our fingertips, and we have it faster than ever before. The constant notifications and incessant pinging conditions us to look forward to the next email, the next text,

fueling an agitated inner state. Physiologically, it’s very similar to an alcoholic looking for the next drink or a drug addict seeking the next fix. But technology isn’t the only contributor; the link between speed and success is continually reinforced by American culture. How can you tell if you’re addicted? You add activities without taking any away. You work

longer hours but don’t finish tasks. You act first and think later. The first and last thing you do every day is reach for your phone. Most people will laugh when they read this and say, Doesn’t everyone? For many of us the answer is yes. What do we sacrifice when we prioritize constant connection? Our relationships suffer the most. Fast-paced living gives us the illusion of connection, but it’s all button-pushing. A relationship is not information input; it takes time, attention, and reciprocal interaction. What are some strategies for slowing down? Start small. Refrain from looking at your phone on your commute to and from work. Declare a block of time every day technology-free. If you can implement these simple changes on a consistent basis and surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable, you’ll eventually learn to pause and reflect naturally, thus regaining control over your life.

The shortest Academy Awards ceremony took about

15

minutes.

That speedy awards presentation, held in 1929, was also the first. Why so swift? “It was very much an experiment,” says Tariq Khan, FoxNews.com’s Oscar expert. The winners had been announced three months earlier, “so it was a chance to just gather and see friends and colleagues and celebrate [their] work.” The fancy festivities included entertainment and a banquet, but when it was time for the honors, names were read with little fanfare and sans skits. Since coming to TV in 1953, the Oscars have gotten longer—last year’s ran 3.5 hours— but at least they’ve increased in entertainment value (Ellen DeGeneres hosts on March 2). We’d like to thank the Academy for that.

of women want to be proposed to with a serenade.

Nowadays, a perfect proposal requires a bit more drama than your classic candlelit dinner. According to a recent survey by U.K.based Beaverbrooks the Jewellers, one in 10 women would swoon if her beau broke into song to ask for her hand. Can’t carry a tune? Seven percent of the ladies polled said they’d like the question to be popped in poetry. “Intimate” isn’t necessarily equivalent to “special” when it comes to getting engaged, though; one in 20 women wants a flash-mob proposal. No matter how you ask, the best way to get a yes! is clear: “Make your proposal a reflection of your unique love story,” says Sarah Pease, owner of New York City–based Brilliant Event Planning. Who could say no to that?

The 10-second spot was nothing like its flashy modern-day descendants. Sponsored by watch and clock company Bulova, the promo, which kicked off a baseball game broadcast on July 1, 1941, only featured a simple voice-over and still image—but you can’t say it wasn’t a bargain. The sum Bulova forked over— $143 in 2013 dollars—was small change compared to the reported $4 million– per-half-minute rate that sponsors will pay for airtime during this month’s Super Bowl. (Not to mention the average $350,000-plus it costs to produce a spot.) The Biow Company ad agency billed Bulova just $5 for airtime and $4 in supplemental charges for the groundbreaking spot. It was a small price to pay for immortality.

Hans Woolley PRESIDENT OF EVITE

How do you keep your company relevant in a rapidly evolving digital world? “One way to stay current is by partnering with folks who are current, which, for us, means they have a prominent voice in the blogosphere or the Internet ecosystem at large. A big part of what Evite does is offer great design, and we’re always looking for people who can help us do that even better. Because of the Internet, there’s no longer a monolithic model for getting information. Instead, you find the people and brands that stand for something you believe in and go directly to that source. As a brand, we do the same thing: find a voice we think will resonate with our audience and go directly to them. In doing so, we’re staying true to our brand promise of bringing people together, yet finding new and better ways to deliver on that promise.” Hans Woolley recently oversaw the launch of Evite Ink, a service for e-cards and custom printable invitations, and Evite Gatherings, a resource for party planning, recipes, DIY projects, décor tips, and more. SimplyInsured solves both problems by translating tricky legalese and digitizing the entire process. You’ll also see a side-by-side comparison of outof-pocket cost estimates for 15 of the most common medical procedures. may find inspiration from a far less complicated time: your youth. KERNEL OF AN IDEA Darien, Connecticut, circa 1988. Two 7-year-old girls in pajamas and pigtails push a chair against the kitchen counter, climb up, and swing open the cabinets until they find the treat they’ve been seeking—a microwavable bag of butter-flavored Jiffy Pop. “My friend used to even lick the dud kernels at the bottom of the bowl,” Kristy Lewis, now 33, says. In college, however, Lewis realized that her favorite snack hadn’t changed since she was a kid, even though attitudes about food had. Why didn’t anyone make organic microwave popcorn, in say, a compostable bag, free of potentially harmful chemicals? In the fall of 2010, three months of maternity leave from her job as an executive assistant gave Lewis the time to test out her idea. Her son Quinn was born—and soon Quinn Popcorn was, too. Between feedings and diaper changes, Lewis experimented in her kitchen with different flavorings, like sage, rosemary, and maple syrup; researched suppliers; and contacted manufacturers to commission a bag made from chemicalfree paper. Her husband, Coulter, an engineer, came up with the idea of placing the flavorings and oil in separate packets, in part to prevent them from seeping through the bag. The couple posted their product on Kickstarter with a goal of raising $10,000. They raised $3,000 overnight. Eventually, 755 backers pledged nearly $30,000. The month after returning to work, Lewis gave notice. It was time to get her business baby on its feet, so she badgered the Whole Foods near her home in Arlington, Massachusetts, until they agreed to stock the product. “They ordered $30,000 worth in our second month, and we had to turn it down

because we didn’t have enough inventory,” she says. Today, Quinn Popcorn is available in hundreds of stores nationwide and online through Amazon and Abe’s Market. “Childhood is such a really fun time—at least mine was,” Lewis says. “I drew on those childhood sleepovers for inspiration.” She even made a butter and sea salt flavor at her pajama party friend’s request. “She’s obsessed with it.” Lewis’ advice for following your fun? Talk to people in the industry. She and her husband reached out to Justin’s Nut Butter, Taza Chocolate, and Bear Naked, all organic food companies that had success selling to Whole Foods. “Now we get emails all the time from people asking how to pursue their ideas,” she says. THE SLUSHIE KINGS Vancouver, British Columbia, circa 1993. Richmond High School quarterback Zack Silverman, parched from a long afternoon of football practice, has a craving that only a product from the local 7-Eleven can satisfy: a Slurpee. “There was nothing more refreshing,” Silverman, now 35, recalls. “It was kind of like a tradition for me and my football buddies. I must have had thousands of slushies in my life.” Years later, while billing long hours for a large corporate law firm in New York City, Silverman quickly bonded with fellow first-year attorney Alex Rein. Chained to their desks, the two began dreaming up business ideas to help them escape. Inspiration struck when Silverman mentioned his post-practice ritual. “You don’t see many lawyers bring a neon cup with a purple straw into the office,” Silverman says. “But people drink other frozen drinks. It seemed obvious: There should be a better, healthier slushie. No one else agreed with us. My wife certainly didn’t.” In 2008, Rein was laid off from the firm, and he dedicated himself to building a slushie truck business. He

and Silverman tried various recipes until they got the flavors and consistency just right. Kelvin Natural Slush Co. officially launched in 2010, with Rein running the day-to-day operations. By the time Silverman quit the law firm two years later, the truck had won the 2010 New York’s Vendy Awards for Best Dessert, and long lines swamped their stall in Brooklyn. Now, Kelvin Slush machines can be found in 23 Whole Foods stores around the country, and the company supplies all of the frozen drinks at Madison Square Garden. His wife no longer thinks he’s so crazy. Silverman’s advice to fellow fun followers? Go slow. “We started with a food truck before we invested tons of money. We could have tested it even cheaper,” he says. “Go someplace like your local flea market, and try to sell your product. If people don’t buy it, all you lost was a couple of weekends and the money you

invested in your trial. Start small, and reevaluate until you find the right formula.” INSIDE THE BOX Stockholm, Sweden, the late ’70s. Little Måns Swanberg is mesmerized by the happy, colorful illustrations of his favorite books, Claymation cartoons, and his favorite toy, Lego blocks. But it’s a simple cardboard box that allows his imagination to run wild. Is it a rocket ship? A race car? He sits inside and wonders. Swanberg, now a creative director in New York City, had a conversation two years ago that brought those fond memories rushing back. His friend suggested using cardboard to make a children’s toy. “I just thought it was a fantastic idea; cardboard is such an abundant material,” he says. The food trucks near his Brooklyn home gave the idea a shape. “It’s a shop and a car, so two toys in one,” he says. “There are so many inspiring

Swanberg’s wisdom for aspiring funtrepreneurs? Study your audience. food trucks on the streets, with fantastic artwork. There’s just loads of headroom to play around with color and typography.” Swanberg spent 18 months developing his “Famous OTO,” a food truck playset for kids. “Normally I just draw pictures, so I had to learn about engineering, manufacturing, distribution, corporate regulations, toy-safety regulations, and so on, all in a foreign language,” he says. After hearing the founder of Indiegogo speak at a conference, he put his proj-

ect on that crowdfunding site and raised $15,000 in seed money. Swanberg’s creation quickly drew favorable press, and his first print run, an uncannily real-looking ice cream truck, sold out this past Christmas through his website, oto-toy.com. He has more trucks planned for 2014. Swanberg’s wisdom for aspiring funtrepreneurs? Study your audience. “I don’t have kids yet, but I have nieces and lots of friends with kids. There were exhaustive test runs. I was impressed—these things really take a beating. We revised the construction, simplifying mostly, and worked out how to best make it come together and disassemble easily, many times over.” TRIVIA MAN Westchester, New York, circa 1999. On TV, Alex Trebek reads the $500 Jeopardy answer aloud. “One of two DiMaggio brothers to play baseball at the same time as Joe.” From his living room couch, Ryan West shouts

a correct response: “Who is Dom?!” That useless knowledge came in handy a half dozen years later when the bar that West worked at while attending university needed a host for its Tuesday trivia night. Soon he was hosting trivia at four bars in the area. After moving to New York City in 2008, West, now 29, got a call from a bar manager who’d attended one of those trivia nights. He wanted West to host a similar geekfest at his watering hole. There, West met Cullen Shaw, organizer of a citywide sports league. “We saw that every week there were regulars coming, and some grew rivalries, to the point where people made T-shirts with their team names,” West says. “We were like, ‘This is like a sports league.’ Why not create that sort of dynamic?” The business model for their NYC Trivia League was simple: bars looking to goose sales on slow nights pay West and Shaw’s company to host the trivia matchups. But the partners

aren’t looking to just pack out a bar for a single night. “We give people a reason to come back,” West says. From that first bar, the NYC Trivia League has grown to fill 13 city bars with 45 registered teams. The league turned a profit quickly and West and Shaw plan to double their bar clients by the end of 2014. West’s best advice for fun creators? Don’t worry about taking the direct route. “I was a business major my freshman year, but I didn’t enjoy the classes,” he says. So he switched to a double major in communications and classical theology. “My parents asked, ‘Well, how is learning about Greek history going to get you anywhere in life?’” Note to would-be trivia champs everwhere: Whenever Ryan West hosts, study up on Aristotle. TIPS FROM IJL DATING EXPERT

B

elieve it or not, your computer screen may be getting in the way of your dating life. While we may use technology to stay “connected” to friends and family, when it comes to meeting potential partners, the digital world obscures the thing that matters most: chemistry.

2

To get a pulse on today’s dating scene, we talked to Cindy Herington, one of the many dating experts at It’s Just Lunch, the world’s largest personalized matchmaking service. Here she explains why you should ditch the laptop for the tabletop.

1

Ditch the Laptop

The premise of It’s Just Lunch is simple: a lunch date or drink after work is the ideal first date. It’s a no pressure, relaxed setting where you can actually talk face-to-face. “Real chemistry happens in person,” Herington says. “You may be having a great online relationship, but when you finally meet, you discover that the person you’ve spent so much time

5 TIPS FOR MODERN DATING with in cyberspace is nothing like what you imagined.” Replace those digital emoticons with a no pressure, casual lunch date and you’ll know immediately if you should take it to the next level.

2

Get a Wingman (or Wingwoman)

It’s Just Lunch’s clients often refer to their matchmakers as their “dating wingmen” (or wingwomen) because they handle all of the dating logistics. Herington describes her role, saying, “We’re genuinely interested in understanding our clients. We listen. We really get to know your personality and what you’re looking for in that significant other.” Every IJL match is hand-selected. There’s no online profile for the world to see and it’s all confidential. After the date, It’s Just Lunch matchmakers receive feedback from each client in order to fine-tune their next match. “We offer something online services don’t: someone to talk to,” Herington says. Imagine having a full-time dating wingwoman who really understands you, working for you while you’re focusing on your career and personal obligations.

“IT’S JUST LUNCH HELPS YOU MAKE TIME FOR THE THINGS THAT MATTER...”

3

Boost Your Dating ROI

Who wants to spend hours sifting through online profiles and trying to connect via email, pokes and winks? You don’t have time to waste playing digital guessing games and meeting the wrong people. When you’re investing your time and energy in something important, you deserve a strong return. With IJL’s personalized match selection

and date coordination, clients are able to save valuable time and energy. “After we select your match, we’ll describe the person to you and confirm a convenient time and place for you to meet. All you have to do is show up and have fun meeting someone new,” Herington says. Less time searching equals more time dating. That’s realized ROI.

4

Date Smarter

Herington reminds singles who contact her that they can have a career and a relationship. They just have to “date smarter.” “If finding someone to share your life with is important to you, you can make time and have it all,” she says. “If you don’t have time to do your taxes, you hire a CPA. If you don’t have time to manage your investments, you hire a financial planner. It’s Just Lunch helps you make time for the things that matter. IJL helps you date smarter.” Since It’s Just Lunch matchmakers take care of all the matching and logistics, you can focus on finding that elusive chemistry in the offline world. IJL is a better, smarter way to date and increase your odds of finding that someone special.

AS THE LEGO GROUP’S first big-budget film foray—The Lego Movie— rockets into theaters this month, it may feel like the colorful plastic brick is everywhere. And we’ll be seeing even more incarnations of the little Danish toy that could: a special Lego episode of The Simpsons this spring, an official Lego documentary, the opening of the sixth Legoland Discovery Center in the U.S., and its increasing use as the raw material of fine art, not to mention a growing buzz in the media. And yet, the basic Lego brick hasn’t significantly changed since it was developed 56 years ago. Sure, it comes in more colors and is sometimes accompanied by cool superhero figurines, but a brick made half a century ago still clicks perfectly with one manufactured today. So what’s with all the fuss?

W

hen 33-year-old Stacy Sterling tells people she’s into Lego, they just seem confused. “People are like, ‘Oh, huh, you mean the kids’ toy?’ Some don’t get it until they see what can be done with them,” she says. The Seattle-based Nintendo employee is just one drop in an expanding ocean of adult fans of Lego, otherwise known as AFOLs, who spend untold hours and dollars building original and elaborate creations out of the toy. The Lego Group—the family-owned company that, for decades, has churned out a nearly endless supply of bricks—estimates the number of AFOLs at 250,000, most of them men in their 30s or 40s with a bent toward technology or graphic design. Teenage fans of Lego are a burgeoning group, too, bolstered in part by the rise of geek-chic.

In the late ’90s, “two developments lured these prodigal Lego fans,” writes David Robertson in Brick by Brick, his 2013 look at the company’s blockbuster innovation strategies. “One was the launch of Lego Star Wars—which appealed to adult nostalgia for the movie classic—as well as the release of Mindstorms, a Lego robotics kit that tapped into grown-ups’ inner geek.” The more recently introduced Lego Architecture series—which immortalizes iconic buildings in plastic—consists of sets aimed at yet another segment of adults. Lego’s appeal for its older fans may also stem from simple childhood nostalgia, though AFOLs also point out how simple to use and largely messfree their hobby is. When you buy a bucket of bricks, they’re ready to go, no sanding, priming or painting involved. As artistic endeavors go, it’s literally something a 5-year-old can do. For Mike Doyle, a fortysomething New Jersey– based graphic designer and author of the recently published art book Beautiful Lego, a family trip to Legoland California was the inspiration to pick up the playthings again. “Something clicked when I was there,” he says. “So I went back to the hotel room and searched online to see whether other people were doing anything interesting with Lego. I was really shocked to see there was a vibrant community of adults, and teens too, working in the medium. My heart started pumping.” Today, Doyle estimates that he has some 400,000 Lego pieces carefully stored in his basement studio, where he creates large but intricate builds and is often joined by his two young sons. “You can get into a real trancelike state while building,” he says. “Time goes by, the pieces snapping together; there’s a lot of little pleasurable moments in the activity of it.” Chris McVeigh, a designer in Halifax, Nova Scotia, guesses he owns 100,000 pieces. Stacy Sterling figures she and her husband, Dave, have passed the 1 million mark. “Legos aren’t cheap,” says Jess Gibson, a Portland, Oregon–based filmmaker who has created “blocumentaries”—short documentaries on adult builders—since 2009. The 738-piece Lord Business’ Evil Lair, a themed set tied to The Lego Movie, goes for $70; generally speaking, a set where each piece averages out to 10 cents or less is considered a good value. “AFOLs are invested, not just timewise, but financially,” Gibson says. “And it’s a big investment, for sure, so they’re serious about it.”

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK In his stormtrooper fantasy “Lest We Forget,” British toy photographer Mike Stimpson, a video game programmer by day, combines his boyhood loves of Lego and Star Wars.

S

uch adoration was probably not what Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Kristiansen envisioned when he founded Lego in 1932. The company started out making household items; among its first toys was a wooden duck on wheels. The production of plastic playthings began in 1947 after the purchase of an injection-molding machine. Kristiansen’s son Godtfred then spent years experimenting with brick designs until he finally devised a sturdy locking system, patented in 1958. As the company came up with new product lines and iterations—the Lego wheel came in 1962, minifigures in 1978— their bottom line grew grew. But as the times changed, so did Lego’s fortunes. In the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, the toymaker faced a series of challenges, the most vexing of which was “to catch up with a world that was rapidly leaving it behind,” writes Robertson in Brick by Brick.

What it needed more than anything was to appeal to children in love with the increasingly high-tech wizardry being seen in movies and video games. In the late 1990s, the company decided to partner with Lucasfilm to produce Star Wars– themed Lego sets, and, despite internal resistance to the deal, they were a hit. First-year sales in 1999 surpassed Lego’s expectations by 500 percent, helping to jump-start a new era. In 2012 alone, the company generated more than $4 billion in revenue. Paradoxically, the thing that threatened Lego’s existence in the 1990s—technological innovation—is largely responsible for the growing population of AFOLs today. The details may differ slightly, but most AFOLs share an origin story. They played with the bricks as children, dropped them in their teen years (what’s known as a “dark age” in AFOL lingo), and somehow stumbled upon them again as

adults. Adult Lego play was a singular and, in some cases, even secretive and shameful pursuit. And then the Internet happened. “The AFOL community has grown because of the Internet—because you don’t have to give yourself permission to like Lego anymore,” says Mariann Asanuma, a professional Lego builder who worked for four years as a master builder at Legoland California. “You realize there are thousands and thousands of people all over the country—or tens of thousands of people all over the world—who are into the same hobby.” As adult fans of Lego started to connect online in the late 1990s and early 2000s, wondrous things began to happen. AFOLs took the brick and made it into what they wanted and needed, pushing it far beyond the toymaker’s vision and marketing ambitions. They created online marketplaces, animated shorts, how-to guides, websites, com-

petitions, and blogs. Multi-day conventions, organized by and for fans, are now held all over the country. “The reason the AFOL community exists at all is because of the Internet,” says college student Jordan Schwartz, a former intern at Lego’s headquarters in Denmark and author of the forthcoming The Art of LEGO Design. AFOLs haven’t just limited themselves to forums and fan sites. Lego, as first and foremost the producer of a kids’ toy, doesn’t manufacture realistic military gear, and the company has partnered with only a limited number of pop-culture franchises. So when adult fans want things Lego hasn’t produced—from World War II weapons to Hunger Games minifigures—they go out and make them themselves. But perhaps the AFOLs’ most treasured creation—surprisingly for what begins for many as an individual pursuit—is community. Andy Price, an IT professional living in Massachusetts, participates in conventions on the East Coast and belongs to two Lego user groups that meet in person once a month, in addition to using the hobby to keep up with his brother. Stacy Sterling and Jordan Schwartz attend conventions, too, and while they enjoy the brickish aspects, what they most look forward to is meeting up with friends—builders they’ve come to know from all over the world.

U

ndoubtedly, the current impact Lego is having on our culture is due, in part, to the company’s strategic decisions and game-changing partnership deals, which now include collaborations with Disney and Marvel. But the true—and enduring—appeal of the brick is much more elusive than that. Why Legos? “It’s the question that gets the worst answer,” says filmmaker Jess Gibson. “Nobody can pin down what it is. Builders say it’s the color, the feel, the quantity. Legos just grow on you—in a good way.” Canadian designer Chris McVeigh, who wonders if his life would have taken “an entirely different direction” had he stuck with the brick through his teen years, sees Legos as something of an oasis. “As adults,” he says, “we’re often so locked into routine and so bogged down by stress that we shut the doors to play.” While children may be the ones doing most of the playing, it’s the adult fans who are bringing the bricks to the fore, inspiring their fellow AFOLs with their magnificent builds—and, just maybe, inspiring the rest of us to take a leap and join in the building game. I

’M STANDING in a dimly lit hotel conference room packed with 200 strangers as the German electronic music is cued up. “Start shaking,” a reassuringly calm voice intones. “Don’t open your eyes. Let everything go.” I wriggle my arms and move my shoulders up and down in a shrugging motion. At the same time, I’m bouncing in place and jiggling my butt. Forcing myself to keep from laughing aloud, I think, How ridiculous we must look! But I keep at it, and as I do, something interesting happens. All the tension from that morning’s drive through beastly San Francisco traffic begins to slough off like snow from a rooftop. My neck and back feel looser, almost as if I’d had a massage. My self-consciousness fades, and I start to enjoy the sensation of shaking. A minute or so in, I crack open an eyelid and see that everyone— including our instructor—is bopping wildly. “Three minutes left!” the voice says. There are a few loud whoops from around the room. A few minutes later—though it feels like an eternity—the percussive, electronic sounds stop abruptly, and we are told to breathe deeply for 60 seconds before launching into a freestyle dance. “Let the music move you!” says the voice. As Bob Marley wails “every little thing is gonna be all right,” the mood in the room shifts to that of a beachside nightclub. We’ve opened our eyes by now, and people are really boogying—gyrating their hips, raising their arms in the air. It’s exhilarating. By the end of the song, I feel bound to these strangers by a shared joy in movement. The soothing voice is that of James S. Gordon, founder and director of The Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C. And this is not some strange New Age aerobics class but the beginning of the CMBM’s intensive, five-day training of an assortment of health professionals in the science of mind-body medicine—a range of techniques that facilitates the brain’s ability to affect bodily functions and symptoms. Dr. Gordon, a Harvard-educated psychiatrist and professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, is constantly crisscrossing the globe to lead trainings like this one at the Sofitel in Redwood City. A charismatic presence with a grandfatherly demeanor, Gordon starts each session with the “shaking” meditation—a jubilant, freeing exercise that helps people break up fixed mental and biological patterns. Gordon’s book Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven-Stage Journey Out of Depression describes this and other mind-body therapies in detail. “Expressive” meditations like shaking are not new. They have been used in many cultures

and include the whirling of Sufi dervishes, Native American chanting and dancing, and the spontaneous movement that is part of the Indonesian spiritual exercise called the latihan. As eccentric as the therapy seems at first glance—even to those who embrace other, more conventional mind-body disciplines like yoga and meditation—it has a powerful effect. Gordon has used “shaking and dancing” with torture victims, HIV patients, and drug addicts. He and

In Dr. Gordon’s “guided imagery” exercise, vets with PTSD are asked to identity a “safe place,” a scene or pursuit that brings them peace and comfort.

“I like working on cars—it gives me a sense of calmness,” says Roynell Williams, shown with his prized 1998 BMW. Williams, who fought in Operation Desert Storm, used to tinker with his car whenever he was angry or depressed. He still does, but after the mind-body skills group, he’s added meditation to his routine. “The group also taught me how to relate to others better,” Williams says.

his staff teach it to veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who are suffering from anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Earlier, Gordon introduced the exercise by saying, “This is good for every human. There are no contraindications.” I’ve come here to experience Gordon’s unique combination of mind-body therapies first-hand. expression through drawings, and even mindful eating and nutrition—Gordon and his staff have, for 15 years, been working with traumatized populations in war-torn regions like Bosnia, Kosovo, Gaza, and Israel. But I’m here to learn more about why VA hospitals and military bases across the U.S. have begun adopting them for ailing soldiers. How do no-nonsense combat veterans react to shaking and dancing? I wonder to myself. the model is that they can be doctors, chaplains, anyone with an interest in helping others—in turn, lead intimate mind-body groups for trauma survivors in their own communities. Gordon and his staff have also used this training model to work with victims of natural disaster—in postKatrina New Orleans and post-earthquake Haiti. In 2007, struck by the epidemic of PTSD in the military, Gordon launched “Healing Our Troops” and began training U.S. military health care providers in the same non-drug techniques. PTSD is an anxiety disorder brought on by memories of an extremely stressful event, such as a car accident, sexual abuse, or war. The number of soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq with PTSD is distressingly high; the Veterans Health Administration estimates that up to 20 percent will suffer PTSD symptoms, including emotional withdrawal, nightmares, flashbacks, insomnia, and panic attacks. David Finkel, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author of the book Thank You for Your Service, estimates that, together, both wars have created half a million “mentally wounded” American veterans. And the reality is likely much higher. Within the stoic culture of the military, where the unspoken mantra is “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” mental illness is still seen by many as a sign of weakness. As a result, many veterans never seek treatment and so are never diagnosed. And then there is the staggeringly high number of veteran suicides. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, every day an estimated 22 veterans take their own lives. In other words, Gordon and his staff have their work cut out for them. On the second day of the CMBM training, I meet Gordon for breakfast. Though packed with research on the biological underpinnings of mind-body medicine, his animated lectures are flecked with funny anecdotes that spark laughter. He’s serious about his work—healing trauma survivors is clearly his calling—yet Gordon is unafraid to show his goofy side. He does the shaking, and the flapping of his arms like a chicken for the “chaotic breathing” exercise, right along with us. Over eggs and coffee, he tells me about the time, 15 years ago, when he returned from Kosovo, where he’d been working with war-traumatized children and adults. On the plane, he sat next to a young American soldier who served as an intelligence officer in Afghanistan. “He told me what he had gone through in the war, what it was like,” remembers Gordon, who says the two of them formed a deep connection during the flight. Every week for a year after their chance encounter, Gordon and the man spoke by phone. These

conversations helped motivate the doctor to turn his attention to working with American trauma victims—specifically veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “I thought to myself, The troops who are coming back from these wars are just as traumatized as the people we’re working with overseas. So let’s see what we can do.” A lot, as it happens. Since founding Healing Our Troops in 2007, Gordon and his staff have trained 350-plus military health professionals in the Center’s mind-body techniques. Roughly 15 VA hospitals and 15 military installations offer a version of the CMBM’s 10-week program.

When Lionel Parker was asked to envision a safe place, he’d imagine himself sitting on a seawall, staring out at Lake Pontchartrain. “My way of calming down is I take a fishing pole and sit by the water,” says the Vietnam vet. For years, he’s suffered with PTSD, and the mindbody group offered him a place where he could talk freely about his wartime experiences. “Now I don’t feel like I’m on an island by myself.”

Beret Skroch, a psychologist and program manager at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, has been using the Center’s model for 6 years. “People who go through it report improved mood, a better sense of control, decreased depression, and increased serenity,” she says. Joseph Graca, a clinical psychologist who has run mind-body skills groups at the VA in St. Cloud, Minnesota, says teaching veterans mindfulness has a profound effect on their receptivity to other treatments. “When a vet is in his body for the first time, stuff comes up. It’s like when you’re frostbit. You don’t feel anything, but when you start coming out of it, it’s painful,” says Graca. “They’ll talk about how much it hurts. It’s scary. But stay with it, and what you start noticing is the veterans get back their fuel for life.” In 2008, the Department of Defense, intrigued by the anecdotal success of the CMBM’s program, funded a randomized controlled trial on the CMBM therapies for vets with PTSD. (The gold standard of medical research, a randomized con-

trolled trial assigns subjects at random to either a control group or an “experimental” group.) The study, which began in 2011 and compared mindbody therapies to treatment as usual (typically cognitive behavioral therapy or medication— or a combination of both), was conducted at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans. Veterans in the mind-body skills groups were permitted to remain on any medications they were taking for sleep, depression, or anxiety, but study leaders kept track of all changes they and their doctors made in dosages throughout the 10 weeks. Though the final

“When I first came home from Vietnam, I was nervous and shaking, and I couldn’t stay in one place too long,” says Joseph Dean. But he always felt calm here, at the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church in New Orleans, where he was baptized in 1958. In the mind-body group, he would recall it during the guided imagery exercise. Today, Dean is the president of the church’s board of trustees and sings in the men’s choir.

trial was concluded in September, its administrators can’t predict when results will be published. “[But] what we’ve seen so far is that they look very positive,” says Gordon, whose hope is that the data will convince the U.S. military and the VA system to make the CMBM’s model available to all veterans and active-duty soldiers—as well as to their families. Gordon has seen dramatic positive effects during his nearly two decades of teaching mind-body skills. In Gaza, women who’ve participated in the groups are standing up to their abusive husbands, and children who’ve learned “soft-belly” breathing (a deep breathing meditation that quiets mental and physical agitation) say they no longer have nightmares. During the ethnic conflict in Kosovo, Gordon led a group of teen girls in the mind-body therapies. The first time they did shaking and dancing, half of them began weeping. “Everything had been so held in,” Gordon remem-

bers. The second time they did it, their joy was more evident. “A few girls came up to me and asked, ‘Do you know Michael Jackson?’” In other words, they became girls again. Research validates Gordon’s clinical observations. A randomized controlled trial that he conducted on 82 Kosovar teens found that after just 12 weeks, mind-body therapies reduced PTSD symptoms by about 80 percent. Mind-body techniques are practical, and this appeals to resultsoriented veterans, Gordon tells me. “You can see the results pretty quickly because you’re doing something. You’re not just talking.” Learning skills like meditation and biofeedback also give veterans a sense of control because they are actively participating in their own treatment. These techniques are taught in groups of 10 or fewer veterans—and the importance of this small-group model cannot be overstated. At each session, participants do a brief soft-

belly meditation and then go around the circle and “check in,” each sharing how he or she feels emotionally, physically, and spiritually at that moment. The ground rules are clear: You can’t interrupt while someone else is talking, and when it’s your turn you can’t give others advice— though you can say how their responses affected you. Also, you’re not forced to talk; if you don’t feel like sharing, you can pass. With cognitive behavioral therapy, a veteran usually talks to a therapist one-on-one, and the patient’s problems are the focus of their sessions. In Gordon’s skills groups, the facilitator, who introduces the concept of mind-body medicine and teaches the techniques, is an equal participant. This is a crucial difference from other VA support groups, says psychologist Michelle Hamilton, a co-investigator of the New Orleans study. Hamilton thinks her participation allowed the veterans to go deeper

“When they were bombing us, you never knew where it was going to land. You hear it, and you’re like, ‘Is it close? Is it going to hit us?’ ” Jones survived such trauma by cutting off his emotions. faster. “For veterans with PTSD— who tend to be emotionally numb— going deep within themselves isn’t something they’re used to doing,” she says. “They felt safe in the group.” Over the years that she’s led mindbody skills groups at the Minneapolis VA, Beret Skroch has seen veterans react powerfully to many of the techniques, especially the drawings and guided imagery. In the drawing exercise, you sketch yourself three times: in the present; with your biggest problem; and, finally, with a solution. You do this three times— once at the beginning of the 10 weeks and twice at the end. Veterans are often astonished by what their draw-

ings reveal. Others respond well to the use of “wise guide” imagery, where you tap into your unconscious by closing your eyes and summoning a mentor—an older relative, a figure from Greek mythology, or even an animal—whom you then consult for advice. Many veterans have epiphanies while mapping out their “genogram,” a family tree that makes visible family patterns and strengths. After the genogram exercise, Madeleine Uddo, co-investigator of the New Orleans study, saw vets make tangible changes in their lives. “One decided to go and reconnect with a child he hadn’t seen in many, many years. Another reached out to

a brother he hadn’t seen in 20 years, and they developed this amazing relationship afterwards.” The strength of the CMBM’s model, Skroch says, is that it offers a smorgasbord of techniques that veterans can choose from—and the safety of the small group. “The most powerful mind-body therapy is not any one technique, it’s the container of the group. It’s being in a safe space, where you’re able to share without a concern that anyone will shut you down or offer advice,” she says.

TRR is an adventure water sports group for wounded vets, founded by Joe Mornini, after he saw them returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

TRR’s Lonnie Bedwell made history last summer, as the first blind person to kayak the entire Grand Canyon. TRR combat veteran guides communicated with Lonnie with verbal commands. It was the trip of a lifetime, provided by Check-6. Check-6 is a company comprised primarily of former fighter pilots and special ops operatives who use their high-level training to provide solutions for other high-risk, high-reliability industries.

“I’m privileged to lead a company of patriot warriors compelled to support other patriot warriors,” said Founder and Chairman Brian “Bru” Brurud. “I saw the power of this therapy first-hand when I participated in a TRR event in Colorado. a sergeant first class in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he witnessed fellow soldiers killed and maimed by IEDs, and discovered the mutilated bodies of civilian contractors with whom he worked every day. He returned from his second deployment in Iraq just in time to evacuate his family to Texas before Hurricane Katrina hit. Returning to New Orleans from a temporary home in Dallas three weeks later, Jones and his wife found their house in ruins. It wasn’t until after his final deployment—to Haiti in 2010, where he helped with postearthquake disaster relief—that Jones was diagnosed with PTSD. Despite all of this, Jones has a wicked sense of humor and a smile that lights up his broad face. A week earlier on the phone, he’d warned me that he’s a private person who rarely feels comfortable talking about his emotions. Nonetheless, he settles into a chair and starts to recount his 17-year career in the military. He speaks in a considered way, as if he’s thought through what he wants to say before he utters it. It’s hard for me to imagine this soft-spoken man—who longs to teach his young daughters how to make pizza, if only the family had a bigger kitchen—engaging in angry conflicts with his wife, as has happened since his return to civilian life. Jones’ father was a Navy man, and the family moved around a lot—from Texas to Oklahoma to California. Throughout high school, Jones was in Junior ROTC. It was a foregone conclusion that he’d sign up to serve his country. When the time came, he chose the Army. Because his aptitude test scores were so high, Jones was given his pick of military jobs. He opted to learn about power generation and electrical repair. But if he had any illusions about what he’d be doing in the Army, basic training set him straight. “The whole idea of basic training is really messed up,” he says with a stammer that, for the first time, hints at the fierce emotion beneath his composure. “They

try and break you down in order to build you up the way they want you. So don’t think you’re going to go out there with extension cords. You’re going to go out there with guns.” Jones was deployed to Kuwait in 2001, where thousands of troops were assembling at Camp Doha prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Even though there was no fighting in Kuwait, he endured something that haunts him to this day. His military job was to help set up distribution boxes and communications networks. On January 21, 2003, two colleagues—civilian contractors from a software development firm in San Diego—were ambushed at a stoplight in what officials called a random terrorist act. Jones, who was in a vehicle more than a mile behind them, didn’t witness the attack, but he and his fellow soldiers found their bodies riddled with gunshot wounds. One was dead. “These were guys we were working with, and they shot ’em up,” Jones says, shaking his head. The contractors were less than 3 miles from the safety of the base, and “we didn’t get a chance to help.” Jones survived such trauma by shutting off his emotions. “You’re like, ‘OK, I’m here for war. I need to be single-minded,’” he recalls telling himself on the way to Iraq. But he never got used to the nightly sirens and ground strikes. “When they were bombing us, you never knew where it was going to land. You hear it, and you’re like, ‘Is it close? Is it going to hit us?’” Once the sirens sounded, he and his bunkermates would don full chemical gear because “you don’t know what they’re shooting.” In Haiti, Jones was injured while carrying a 55-foot medi-tent on an airfield. In excruciating pain, he was told by his case manager that he needn’t go to the hospital—an ibuprofen would do. “That’s the way they treated us out there in the field,” Jones says. Later, when he went through post-deployment in New

Orleans, Jones was diagnosed with PTSD. His symptoms—anxiety, nightmares, hyper-vigilance, outbursts, and depression—had been present for years, but he says he wasn’t screened for the disorder until he returned from Haiti. He was immediately given meds for anxiety and depression. It was another soldier who urged him to seek psychological help at NOLA’s VA hospital. “I was under the impression that this is just what soldiers go through,” Jones says. He started meeting once a week with a psychologist for cognitive behavioral therapy. The same psychologist told him about the mind-body study, which he participated in for 10 weeks in the summer of 2013. Being in a small group—where he listened to other NOLA-based veterans articulate their struggles—helped Jones open up about experiences he wasn’t comfortable sharing with anyone, including his wife. “Logically, you know that you’re not the only one

Surprisingly, considering the macho culture of the military, the VA already endorses some mind-body therapies as treatments for PTSD—namely meditation, yoga, and biofeedback. who has gone through war,” he says. “But it’s one thing to know it and another when you actually hear other people speak of their experiences. Regardless of what war they may have been in, you’re dealing with the same issues.” Jones was the youngest member of his group, and the only one from the latest Iraq War. Two group members served in the first Iraq War (aka Operation Desert Storm), and the rest were veterans of Vietnam. Michelle Hamilton, the staff psychologist who led Jones’ group, says she’s always surprised by the affection that develops between 60-year-old group members and

younger guys like Jones. “Sometimes the Vietnam vets feel like father figures to them,” she says. The men in Jones’ group (see sidebar photographs) forged such a strong bond that by the final session they didn’t want to part. Today, they regularly keep tabs on one another. “We say, ‘Are you doin’ something to relax, or are you just getting more pissed off ?’” Jones says, chuckling. That Hamilton fully participated in the exercise made Jones feel even more at ease. “When we were opening up, it wasn’t just us. We learned about her, too,” he says. “It’s not like we were just putting our information out there to be judged.”

Jones learned skills that serve him well in his civilian life—like coping with everyday traffic jams. “After being in convoys where you see someone ahead of you get blown up by an IED, or you see somebody get ambushed and there’s nothing you can do about it ... ” his voice trails off. As a result, he says, “I’m always on the defensive when it comes to driving.” Understandably, this troubled his wife, who worried they’d get into an accident. But after mastering soft-belly breathing—a meditation done with the eyes closed— Jones now regularly employs it while he’s driving, breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth the way Hamilton taught him. “When I’m driving, soft-belly calms me down a lot,” he says. “I just don’t close my eyes!” The soft-belly meditation also helps Jones rein in his anger. “I don’t like to argue, but at times I can be so on edge that it doesn’t make a difference what you say,” he notes of his habit of losing his temper with family or friends. “I’m snapping at what you say, or who you are—I’m snapping at you. “That really got to me,” he says, looking away as he speaks. “But the meditation helps me control some of those outbursts. It gives me a whole lot more control.”

ONES STILL struggles with his PTSD symptoms. He doesn’t like sudden noises, so he spends every Fourth of July holed up in his house, with loud music playing to drown out the noise of fireworks. “Unfortunately, as a result, my daughters really don’t enjoy the Fourth,” he says. When going out to a restaurant with his wife, he has to make sure his back is against a wall. No matter how powerful the mind-body techniques are, they won’t erase the wounds of war. Jones may always have nightmares, episodes of depression, and anger issues. But these therapies have helped him gain control of his life. Though he remains on four medications, he credits the mind-body therapies with keeping him from having to add yet another. As Gordon said in the session I attended, there are no contraindications to these non-drug therapies—they are good for every human being. Surprisingly, considering the macho culture of the military, the VA already endorses some mindbody therapies as treatments for PTSD—namely yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and biofeedback. Meditation is particularly popular, with more than 80 percent of VA health care facilities offering some form of it. Gordon, who chaired the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy during both the Clinton and Bush II administrations, says the federal agencies that took his ideas most to heart were the DOD and the VA. “They developed task forces to address our recommendations,” he says. But Gordon also knows that both are large and complicated bureaucracies resistant to change. And yet, if the results of Gordon’s trials are as conclusive as he believes, what would the military lose by embracing these therapies for every soldier returning from combat? That’s Gordon’s dream— that these mind-body skills would be compulsory; that imparting them would be as routine as measuring a soldier’s blood pressure or checking his or her eyesight. “They’re taught how to clean and disassemble a weapon,” he says. “But what about the human side? This is about giving our soldiers the skills to help themselves.” Hannah Wallace writes about food politics, farming, integrative medicine, and travel.

ebruary is American Heart Month, placing the spotlight directly on the reality that heart disease is the No. 1 killer among both men and women in America. It also serves as a great reminder that we can take a number of proactive steps to prevent this disease and bolster our heart health. Choose a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables while cutting back on sodium and foods high in saturated and trans fat. Get out and exercise regularly—a brisk, 30-minute walk can do wonders for your health. Take vitamins and minerals in recommended doses that promote heart health, DR. STEVEN HOTZE such as CoQ10, fish oil, magnesium and vitamins C and E. The Hotze Health & Wellness Center also recommends keeping your hormones balanced, as studies have shown that hormonal decline such as hypothyroidism can eventu-

ally lead to heart disease. Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include low energy, unexplained weight gain, short-term memory loss, cold hands and feet, hair loss and dry skin. “If you have some of these symptoms, then take charge of your health today so that you can protect your heart and your overall health,” says Dr. Steven Hotze, founder and CEO of the Center.

Add 30 minutes of exercise per day (150 minutes per week) doing something you enjoy, such as hiking or gardening.

Encouraging numbers from 2013 revealed that death rates from cancer continue to decline, and cancer patients can implement some very basic lifestyle changes to help win their battle. Oncology dietitian Jason Stevens at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has developed a number of tips using the “Add, Subtract, Replace” strategy from the American Institute for Cancer Research: • Add 30 minutes of exercise per day doing something you enjoy, such as hiking or gardening. Have an accountability partner, and set a specific exercise goal that is attainable. If needed, create a Plan B, such as a workout DVD. • Subtract TV time from your weekly routine, including the mindless eating that accompanies it. Set limits on other sedentary activities such as computer time, and only eat at the dinner table,

where you’re not distracted by television and the Internet. If you want to watch your favorite show, try exercising while you tune in. • Replace your usual moderate-level activity with a vigorous activity (you shouldn’t be able to carry on a conversation at the same time)

MDRIVE CLASSIC

For Active Men

You’re not done yet! Whether you’re an elite athlete striving for a world record, or just looking to beat fatigue, there’s a custom-formulated Mdrive for you. That means more energy, more strength, more endurance, more drive. Invented by Gary Kehoe, an avid hiker, cyclist and world class formulator – Mdrive is a natural source to fuel your competitive drive, and change the way you feel in everything you do. He created the product because he had reached that age in life (you know what we’re talking about) when a man needs to decide if his best days are behind him. Can’t run as fast. Can’t work as long. Can’t keep up. Well this might sound like hype, but Mdrive can help you change all that. Not kidding.

The Mdrive line-up uses clinically-proven ingredients and a blend of natural botanical extracts that deliver powerful, lasting results. Want more energy? Want to feel and be stronger? Want to look more tone and lean? Don’t get us wrong, this is not a magic pill. You will have to do something. You have to show up! To get the best results and have people ask: “What are you doing, because you look great,” you have to take what you eat more seriously. Avoid processed foods and sugar that make you sluggish. You have to get into the gym or simply workout — make a commitment to do something. Anything. Run on the treadmill for 20 mins, exercise your body for 30 or 45 minutes or more 3-5 days a week. But do something.

For Athletes or Weekend Warriors

Just show up! Stop making excuses and make some new priorities. Get up a little earlier or get to the gym after work. We promise, if you make this your motto for the new year “Just Show Up!”– you will find that once you’ve gotten to the gym or put on your running shoes or gotten to the hiking trail, you will do more than you think you were going to do. Your motivation will take over and your inspiration to look and feel better will drive you to your goal. Mdrive was created for people like you. We promise you won’t be disappointed with the results or we will give you your money back. No strings attached.

in your refrigerator while extending two or three times the life, freshness and nutritional value of fruits, vegetables and other foods that are being stored. By neutralizing bacteria, mold and other harmful microbes, the potential food spoilage reported to be the equivalent of tossing out $165 billion every year is reduced; saving just 15 percent of that waste could feed more than 25

million people. Aside from the vast impact on our environment, this earth-friendly reduction would also save each individual household up to an estimated $2,200 annually. According to the National Parkinson Foundation, nearly 1 million Americans are affected by Parkinson’s disease, with an estimated 50,000–60,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. A

For more information on dates and locations, visit parkinson.org. Getting up off the couch and motivating ourselves to stay active is a challenge for many of us. This scenario is especially important for older adults to act on, as the proven benefits to the mind and body are even more pronounced for seniors looking to maintain their health. In-home senior care provider Home Care Assistance promotes a Balanced Care Method that includes fitness tips for older adults to set them up for success. 1) Exercise with friends. Schedule a regular time to take a walk around the neighborhood, visit the gym or garden with a friend. Motivating each other as accountability partners and maintaining social ties bring mental and physical benefits. 2) Do something you enjoy. If you hate what you’re doing, your exercise regime is already doomed. Skip running if you despise it; instead, try other options such as swimming or tennis until you find something enjoyable and lasting. 3) Hire a professional. The added element of paying for your workout makes you much less likely to slack. A trainer will also be able to suggest suitable exercises that are safer for seniors to execute. 4) Make it fit your lifestyle. If time is an issue, set up your home for working out. be too busy. Finding the time to exercise is key. Whether you’re an aging adult, workout warrior or elite-level athlete, the debilitating pain from musculoskeletal diseases, joint injuries and arthritis can make even a functional level of activity almost impossible. The Center for Regenerative Medicine in Miami, Florida, has developed a number

of non-surgical and rehabilitation techniques focused on management and treatment of the spine, knees, shoulders and other cartilage damage. Included in these options are cell-therapy injections that were previously confined to a hospital setting, but are now available in an office setting via new technology for harvesting the cells. “Stem cells are of great poten-

tial for patients who benefit from regenerative medicine,” says Dr. A.J. Farshchian, medical director for the Center and a pioneer in the field of orthopedic medicine. “During the healing process, the body rushes many cells and cell-types to the injected area in order to accelerate the healing process. These cells perform many functions, including release of growth factors into the diseased or arthritic and injured sites, which promotes healing.” With the CDC’s Vision Health Initiative report that approximately 14 million Americans ages 12 and older suffer from some form of visual impairment, eyesight corrective measures are not only popular, they’re plentiful. And while glasses or contacts are still widely used, cataract, refractive and laser vision corrective surgeries are becoming enticing options for many seeking a life-changing, lasting alternative. Ever-evolving surgical technology has created an array of choices, including: • Cataract surgery in which an incision is made to remove the eye’s cloudy lens and replace it with an intraocular lens. • Refractive lens exchange surgery as an alternative to laser corrective surgery, similar to the cataract procedure in utilizing an intraocular lens to eliminate the need for glasses or contacts. • LASIK surgery, in which a flap is made in the outer layer of the cornea so a laser can reshape the tissue for patients who are nearsighted, farsighted and/or have astigmatism. • PRK surgery for patients whose cornea isn’t thick enough for LASIK, using a laser on the surface of the cornea to reshape it. Healthcare marketing specialist Paul DeCorte offers the following advice: “Be sure to seek out a doctor who is utilizing the latest technology and has years of experience in a variety of different procedures.”

Kehoe, the president and CEO of supplement company DreamBrands, experienced this depletion of energy and physical prowess in spite of his lifelong devotion to exercise and nutrition. The result of his research into a solution for this issue is Mdrive, a potent blend of herbs, mushroom extracts and ingredients clinically proven to free up release of healthy testoster-

one and support energy, strength, stamina and cardiovascular health. Kehoe still preaches the benefits of an active lifestyle in harmony with effective supplementation. “I’m always surprised at how few men and women make the connection between their sore knees, back and hips to being a few pounds overweight,” Kehoe says. “Don’t believe me? Try putting 20 pounds

in a backpack and wearing it around all day on a Saturday. Now, imagine the extra energy we’d have if our heart and lungs had 20 fewer pounds to support. Let’s make this February the month we focus on our own good health. If we make an effort this week, it will lead to a great month and hopefully many great months and before you know it a great year for improving your health.”

THE CENTER FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE A NON-SURGICAL TECHNIQUE TO FIGHT AGAINST ARTHRITIS AND SPORTS INJURIES

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right). This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past nine years.

For pro athletes, staying healthy and competition-ready is a daily challenge. Golfer Russ Cochran spent a third of 2013 battling a variety of injuries—and unable to play. “I had chronic issues with my wrist, elbow and intercostal rib strain. I talked to my physician, Dr. Joseph Kutz at Kutz Kleinert Hand Care Center in Louisville, Kentucky,” says Cochran. “He said, ‘You need to try this Play Again—it’s really good stuff, and it can help you.’ I felt the positive effects in just three weeks. I knew that Play Again was the real deal and was benefiting me greatly.” Cochran went on to win for the fourth and fifth times in his career on the PGA Champions Tour®, and he believes that Play Again can help any golfer who wants to stay in the game deal with pain and mobility issues. “The injuries and problems we face in golf are compounding,” Cochran says. “Once you get on the wrong side of things, it’s a quick spiral downhill. My goal was to get healthy enough to stay out there and play more tournaments. With Play Again, I was able to play a full schedule—and ended up with a good, solid season.”

It’s no secret that furthering your education pays off—and the numbers unquestionably spell that out. According to 2012 data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for a person who has earned a master’s degree is more than $12,000 higher than for someone with only a bachelor’s. Job security is also greater for those with an advanced degree. And while more earning power and a brighter future can be significant motivators, the personal satisfaction of receiving a graduate degree should never be discounted. Rady School alum Drew Spaventa founded ecoATM, which creates automated self-service kiosks that allow consumers to retire used electronics for cash or store credits. As a founding member of the company that was just acquired for $350 million, he fine-tuned the business model in his Lab 2 Market core course sequence. “The biggest thing Rady did for me was provide the forum for me to meet these people that were starting ecoATM,” says Spaventa. “I joined a team of really successful and seasoned entrepreneurs who have actually done multiple start-ups before, and it’s through the Rady course and curriculum that I was able to get introductions to these people, network, and ultimately find a job.” There are many compelling reasons that someone already established in a career might consider pursuing an MBA degree, including positioning themselves for promotions, increasing their leadership influence, maximizing job mobility, and acquiring an integrative understanding of business. Likewise, the excuses for not doing so are many: lack of time, a dearth of quality programs nearby, concerns about life balance, and a distrust of longdistance learning. Auburn University’s Executive MBA programs in the Raymond J. Harbert College of Business are tailored to address these concerns by promoting flexibility and convenience for working professionals looking to gain a broader perspective of business and hone their leadership skills.

The program’s two major offerings are the Executive MBA (EMBA) and Physicians Executive MBA (PEMBA), both of which are 21-month, cohortbased programs that are applied and emphasize the message “learn today and use tomorrow.” The face-to-face advantages of five short on-campus residencies of 4 to 5 days and a 10-day international study trip are combined with the convenience of distance-based education that doesn’t require being in front of a computer at specific times. Dr. Michael Washington, medical director of the emergency department at Methodist Olive Branch Hospital in Mississippi, earned a promotion to an administrative position through his coursework even before he received his Auburn MBA. “The thing that separated me from the other candidates, people who were similarly qualified otherwise, was my pursuit of this degree,” Washington says. One prime advantage of graduate study is the availability of high-level instruction in smaller, more focused environments that allow students to hone their understanding in a given field. With a student/faculty ratio of 9:1, Trinity University offers largeschool resources in a small-school setting as students collaborate with some of the best minds in the country at both the undergraduate and graduate

level. In addition, the University places a high priority on global understanding and incorporates an international focus on many levels, an objective that is enhanced by Trinity’s diverse metropolitan location of San Antonio. For 22 straight years, the university has been ranked No. 1 in the West by U.S. News & World Report. Real-life experience that integrates conceptual and experiential learning marks the rigorous curricula built into Trinity’s top-ranked graduate degree plans, which include five programs: Accounting, Health Care Administration, School Leadership, School Psychology, and Teaching. Designed to empower students to grow and discover within their field, Trinity’s graduate programs are characterized by strong support from faculty, as well as alumni and other professionals that are dedicated to mentoring students in and out of the classroom. The goal? Establishing lifelong relationships and strong leadership skills that prove valuable in creating a professional network in your field of study. St. Mary’s University, a Catholic liberal arts university in San Antonio, promotes its values of academic excellence, faith formation, and service to society in a learning environment that graduates ethical leaders. Unique scholarship offerings for undergraduates include the hallmark Greehey Scholars Program, which challenges students to become top performers through business immersion projects, industry site visits, and opportunities to network with leading executives and entrepreneurs. Students can also get a jump on the job market through experience operating a student-run business, managing a $1 million investment portfolio, and interfacing with different business cultures through international study abroad programs. For graduate business students, The Greehey MBA for values-driven leaders includes a concentrated international field study, a focus on advanced behavioral skills, and class schedules on evenings and selected Saturdays designed for working professionals. “The Greehey MBA builds leaders who are drawn to creating successful enterprises that are also ethical and socially responsible,” says Greehey MBA student Jeanette Vazquez. The pursuit of higher education for personal and professional advancement isn’t limited to graduate studies for many whose circumstances have led them down a different path. more than 8 million were 25 or older. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that students 25 and over accounted for the largest growth since 2000, rising 34 percent during that period. In addition, that number is expected to increase another 19 percent by 2021. Clearly, today’s college student isn’t college-aged anymore. If you fall in that group, the tradi-

tional campus experience may not be right for you. And now, it’s not the only choice that’s available for you to earn your degree. With the introduction of Personalized Learning, Northern Arizona University became the first public university in the nation to offer online, competency-based degrees. The result? It’s now possible for you to earn credit for what you

already know and advance quickly in areas where you have experience. That means earning your degree on your time and at your pace. The advantages of NAU’s Personalized Learning program include: • A set cost of $2,500 for a six-month, unlimited access subscription • No semesters, textbooks, or hidden fees • Earning credits based on competency, not class attendance • Access to dedicated faculty instructors and mentors • Degrees in Computer Information Technology (CIT), Liberal Arts, and Small Business Administration Whether the obstacle is cost, accessibility, or any number of possible hurdles placed before you, the benefits of earning a degree of any kind are ones that will serve you well for a lifetime. The good news? With the variety of programs and institutions now available, this dream has never been more attainable.

FOCUS ON FRANCHISES

FRANCHISE PROMOTIONAL SERIES

Franchises BY AMANDA GLEASON

Call it the new American dream: Nearly half of us now desire to own our own business, which is why it’s no big surprise to find franchising catching on across the country. Perhaps it’s the allure of working for yourself, or maybe it’s the urge to be in a business you’re passionate about—whatever the reason, the entrepreneurial spirit has taken hold of hundreds of thousands of Americans. For many though, knowing where to begin is the trickiest part. Fear not—one of the first things franchisees realize is how much support franchisors offer. If you’ve got a zest for owning a business, franchising may be JUST THE JOB FOR YOU. 118 SPIRIT FEBRUARY 2013

n December, Entrepreneur magazine reported that the franchising sector created about 11,000 new establishments and 150,000 new jobs in 2013, outpacing the overall U.S. economy in business formation and growth. The article stated that despite challenges, including an outdated tax code and health care costs, nearly every category is seeing growth. What is it exactly about franchising that has so many people intrigued? To begin with, a franchise allows entrepreneurs to start their own business— without starting from scratch. As the International Franchise Association points out, franchising takes some of the anxiety out of launching a business because you’re working with an established product or service, often with a customer base already in place. “You’re buying into an already proven system, so you don’t have to waste time reinventing the wheel and can instead focus on running your business,” says Angela Zerda, director

Mosquito Joe

of marketing for Mosquito Joe, an outdoor pest control company. And the easiest way to stay focused on your business is to find an industry you’re passionate about. The International Franchise Association suggests taking time to explore some key questions in depth: What do you like to do? What do you know how to do? Would you rather sell a product or a service? “Consider the pros and cons of different industries and think about which would fit best with the lifestyle

you want,” Zerda says. “The right opportunity should be a good fit not only financially but also when it comes to lifestyle, personality, and values.” Passion shouldn’t be the only key role in your franchise decision, however; be on the lookout for industries expected to grow. Senior care, for instance, is causing quite the stir, as some 8,000 baby boomers are turning 65 years old every day. Entrepreneur named the industry one of the top five to watch in upcoming years, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that by 2020 home health and personal care aides will number more than 1.3 million—a 70 percent increase from 2010. This swell in the retirement-age population has opened the door for companies like Seniors Helping Seniors, an in-home care provider that matches those who want to provide help with those seeking help. Since the company launched in 1998, more than 240 franchises have opened in 38 states

Husband and Wife team build a successful business. Building a better life and a better community. Summer and Cory Bullock’s goal since day one has been to operate a successful, well-run business together that provides parents and children with the best educational childcare. As Cory completed his naval commitment and Summer’s career as an occupational therapist was underway, the Bullock’s researched

options of owning their own business and decided on childcare. With children of their own, they saw an opportunity to raise the standards in their community, and owning a Kiddie Academy franchise enabled them to combine their passion for children, dream of being business owners and desire for a flexible schedule. In 2008 Kiddie Academy of League City opened, garnering a stellar reputation. As the business developed, they expanded with a second building in 2012. Parents and children are extremely happy to be welcomed by the Bullock’s every day. They have made a tremendous impact on the children in their care and improved their community for the future.

The company is guided by the idea that seniors are best equipped to help other seniors age better. Add to it the fact that both parties seem to benefit equally, and it’s clear why Seniors Helping Seniors is a win-win for so many. “We’re creating a community of compassionate people who first want to help, and then want to make money,” says Kiran Yocom, company co-founder. “Our company is a great opportunity for those who are looking for a way to give back to their community while also making a good living for themselves and their families.” Child care programs, another industry Entrepreneur pegged as one to watch, are also on the rise due largely to more working parents and a greater awareness of the importance of early childhood development. Currently, organized facilities account for about 25 percent of preschool child care arrangements, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Kiddie Academy, a leader in educational child care, is in tune with this trend and has 120 locations operating in 21 states, with about 30 more in the works.

“Kiddie Academy has always been a pioneer. Our emphasis has been and continues to be education, and we offer a myriad of enrichment programs, such as character education,” says company president Greg Helwig. “In addition, we’re the only national brand to achieve the Obama Administration’s Let’s Move certification, which highlights our dedication to promoting healthy habits and more physical activity among the children we serve.” As you narrow down your franchise options, industries whose services will always be needed should be top of mind, such as outdoor pest control. Mosquito Joe, which has 15 franchises across the country and is on track to have a total of more than 50 in 2014, meets a need people will always have. “Over the next five years, spraying for mosquitoes at homes will become as common as having your lawn cut or weeds sprayed. We’re looking forward to continued expansion into new territories, particularly in the South and along the East Coast where mosquitoes are a real problem,” Zerda says. “Our business model offers a recurring revenue stream along with flexibility, making it great as a standalone business or as a complement to

The word “folk” derives from the German volk, which means “the people as a whole,” and so folk music as a style is comprised of songs for the people, usually passed down via oral tradition and often commemorating historical, regional, or personal events. Make your own folk memories at the 54th annual University of Chicago Folk Festival, one of the nation’s oldest and best celebrations of the genre. This year’s three-day event offers starstudded evening concerts, featuring youthful Irish band The Yanks, blues guitarist Ari Eisinger, traditional balladeers Elizabeth LaPrelle and Anna Roberts-Gevalt, and old-time string band Bigfoot. Mornings and afternoons are devoted to free workshops, including sessions on fiddle and banjo styles, Irish social dancing, and sea shanties. Concerts are held at Mandel Hall, while workshops are at Ida Noyes Hall. Workshops free, concerts from $20 per day, $15 for seniors, $10 for students with ID; uofcfolk.org DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA

Enhancing the Mobile Experience

SWA’s redesigned app simplifies your travels.

TICKET TO RIDE

Go paperless with a Mobile Boarding Pass.

In 2007, Southwest Airlines launched the first mobile version of southwest.com. That same year, the iPhone was unveiled, forever changing our idea of what a smartphone could be. Southwest was the first U.S. airline to launch an app for the iPhone in 2009, which was followed soon thereafter by an app for both Android and BlackBerry devices. Today, more than one million Customers checkin for a Southwest flight on their phones each month. As the mobile world continues to change, Southwest keeps working to enhance the Customer experience in that arena. The Southwest mobile web site and app for iPhone and Android recently underwent a complete redesign, keeping the same great features from our previous app while adding a number of new options to streamline user experience. With this redesign, Southwest is testing the use of Mobile Boarding Passes in select cities with Passengers traveling solo on

direct flights. Throughout 2014, Mobile Boarding Passes will roll out in other cities across our network. Customers will be able to request a Mobile Boarding Pass at the time of checkin on southwest. com, mobile.southwest.com, or through the Southwest app. They can then choose one of three delivery methods: view in browser, send to smartphone via e-mail, or send via text message. Southwest continues to look for ways to improve the features on the Southwest app and mobile web site. You can bring a whole new level of Customer Service right to your fingertips by downloading the app at southwest.com/ mobile. We think you’re going to appsolutely LUV it. —Tom Finley

KITCHEN AIDES

+

Southwest Employees make dinner each month at the Ronald McDonald House in Austin, Texas.

The House that LUV Built

SWA and Ronald McDonald House Charities team up to help families. I serve as executive director at the Ronald McDonald House of Austin, Texas, and each day, from the moment I walk into the House, I feel at home. Even with the usual hustle and bustle of volunteers preparing dinner in the kitchen or children playing in the living room, our House has a sense of community, calm, and comfort that makes it a place of rest and recuperation—a true home away from home for families who are traveling to receive medical care for a seriously ill or injured child. Most often, families come to the Ronald McDonald House in the middle of an unexpected pediatric crisis. We enable these families to concentrate on getting and keeping their child healthy and happy by providing support and stability in a homelike environment at little to no cost. So much of the community we have created at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas is due to the generous support of Southwest Airlines.

In 2004, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas received a gift of $125,000 from Southwest’s annual charity golf tournament, the LUV Classic. This gift, which at the time was our most substantial single donation, enabled us to kick off our capital campaign for the House we opened in 2007. Southwest Employees also support our organization by volunteering each month to cook dinner. We even have a guest room deemed the “LUV Room” in honor of our partnership with Southwest. The families who come here are filled with worry and anxiety, arriving by chance and not fully understanding how we can help. But there is a moment when I can tell that the parents really comprehend the support and strength present within our House. That’s when they say to themselves, “We can do this.” This is why we exist; this is our mission. The Ronald McDonald House has become a place that both we and the families LUV. And I am comforted to know that, with the generous support of partners like Southwest, we are able to help children facing medical crises to heal with their families by their sides. —Carolyn Schwarz, Executive Director, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas FEBRUARY 2014 SPIRIT

The “If” List

Michelle Dockery, if you ruled the world, what’s the first thing you would change? I would put someone else in charge. If you had to choose any actor, living or dead, to play you in a film, who would it be? Katharine Hepburn. If you could go back in time and star in any movie ever made, which film would it be? Brief Encounter. If you could have created any one work of great art—a song, a painting, a movie, etc.—by another artist, what would it be? “A Case of You,” by Joni Mitchell.

This month, the Downton Abbey star appears opposite Liam Neeson in the thriller Non-Stop.

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why? 1960s New York, because I am reading Just Kids by Patti Smith. If you could take back one sentence you’ve spoken, what would it be? “I can’t do it!” If you were born 100 years ago, what would you be doing? I would probably be a lady’s maid.

If we were to see your new film Non-Stop, what could we expect? A little turbulence, to say the least!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN STRAUSS/INVISION/AP

If your life were a novel, how would it end? Exit stage left, pursued by a bear.

What About You? If you could listen to only one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? Submit your answer at spiritmag.com/if. Our favorite responses will be published in an upcoming issue of Spirit. 156 SPIRIT FEBRUARY 2014

I spend some workdays in the air — which makes the plane my office. It has a desk, a light and a window with a view. It also has 150 guest chairs — and they’re always full. But with these headphones on,

it’s like closing the door

to my office. THE BEST AROUND-EAR HEADPHONES WE’VE EVER MADE. The world isn’t exactly a quiet place. That’s why we pioneered noise cancelling headphones. Put them on, and everything else fades to the background. You can choose to hear more of the full, rich sound of your favorite music — or simply less of the plane around you. Try Bose QC® 15 headphones risk-free for 30 days. Ask about free shipping and our easy payment plan, with no interest from Bose. And enjoy better sound wherever you go.

To order or learn more: Bose.com/QC | 1.800.760.4305, ext. Q8785 ©2014 Bose Corporation. The distinctive design of the headphone oval ring is a trademark of Bose Corporation. Financing and free shipping offers not to be combined with other offers or applied to previous purchases, and subject to change without notice. Risk-free refers to 30-day trial only, requires product purchase and does not include return shipping. Delivery is subject to product availability. CC013814
