Latino Arts Project’s inaugural and current exhibit, Mexican Modern Sculpture: A Study of the Artists, spotlights nine transformative Mexican artists, who reached their pinnacle of fame during the 1930s–1950s from five regions in Mexico, through nearly 100 sculptures. A Winning Team I always love this time of year, when fall is on the horizon and the heat of summer is in our rearview mirror. It’s back to school for some, back to work for others, and, perhaps my favorite aspect, football season. I grew up playing all kinds of sports, most notably football, and on Saturdays in the fall, you’ll find me cheering for my beloved alma mater, The University of Texas. Another fall highlight for me is getting to bring our Leadership Team together for a day of learning, inspiration, and fellowship. I’m a big believer in the power

of teams spending quality time together, so I always find this day rewarding. Last year, we were fortunate to be joined by several motivational speakers, including legendary college football coach Lou Holtz. Our Team Members were so moved by his message that we are bringing him back again this year and are looking forward to another inspiring day. Perhaps our biggest takeaways from Coach Holtz were the three simple rules he set for his teams: Do what’s right, do everything to the best of your ability, and show your team you care. When

followed, these rules speak to trust, commitment, and love—and when those three dynamics are present, you have a winning team. At Southwest®, we ask every Employee to live the Southwest Way, which encompasses having a Warrior Spirit, Servant’s Heart, and Fun-LUVing Attitude. While “LUV®” is a nod to our New York Stock Exchange ticker symbol, it’s also a reference to how we like to think of ourselves as “the love airline.” We hope you’ve noticed that we take our competition seriously, but not ourselves. I like to say that the airline industry is the ultimate team sport, and it takes all of us working together to get you where you’re going. I’ve been incredibly proud to take the field with the Southwest Team for the past 33 years. Each year, we are faced with new challenges, and each year, we have triumphed and prevailed because we are bound by trust, commitment, and love. Thank you for allowing our Team to serve you today!

Un Equipo Ganador Siempre me ha gustado esta época del año, cuando el otoño está en el horizonte y el calor del verano se percibe desde el retrovisor. Para algunos es hora de regresar a la escuela, para otros hay que regresar al trabajo, pero quizás mi parte favorita es la llegada de la temporada de fútbol americano. Crecí jugando todo tipo de deportes, sobre todo fútbol americano. Los sábados, durante esta temporada, pueden encontrarme aplaudiendo al equipo de mi alma mater, La Universidad de Texas. Otro evento destacado del otoño, para mí, es la reunión de nuestro Equipo de Liderazgo para tener un día de

aprendizaje, inspiración y compañerismo. Siempre he creído en que los equipos de trabajo pasen tiempo de calidad juntos. Por eso, encuentro esta reunión muy gratificante. El año pasado tuvimos la fortuna de que nos acompañaran varios oradores motivacionales, incluyendo al legendario entrenador de fútbol americano Lou Holtz. Los Miembros de nuestro Equipo se emocionaron tanto con su mensaje, que este año lo hemos invitado de nuevo y estamos emocionados por tener otro día inspirador. Los principales aprendizajes que hemos retomado del Entrenador Holtz fueron tres sencillas reglas que él

Southwest® encourages firstgeneration Latinx students to pursue their dreams. As the official airline sponsor of The East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU) Education Foundation, Southwest supports first-generation Latinx students, including military veterans, from underserved communities by connecting them to academic and professional opportunities. TELACU established its Education Foundation in 1983 to combat the high dropout rates among Latinx college students. Each year, the TELACU Education Foundation provides financial resources and support services to 2,000 high school, college, and graduate school students. More than three decades later, the TELACU alumni program comprises thousands of graduates across the U.S. Because Southwest serves more than 100 destinations and offers extensive routing options, access to our service enables students to visit and

attend schools all around the country—a possibility that might have otherwise been beyond their reach. Southwest also provides flight access to students pursuing internships in their chosen field. Earlier this year, a group of TELACU high schoolers traveled on one of Southwest’s convenient crosscountry flights to tour prospective colleges and universities on the East Coast. During the trip, students visited Washington, D.C., where they got a firsthand glimpse into how our democracy works. Both informative and inspiring, this experience exposed the students to new possibilities. TELACU scholars and alumni are grateful for the support of the foundation and its committed partners like Southwest. One of TELACU’s countless success stories is Stephanie Haro, a current Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University. While receiving her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at Brown University, Stephanie helped develop an automated system for hospitals that detects whether an infant’s cries are pain-induced. I’ve always heard stories about how Southwest goes above and beyond to solve problems for their Customers, but I recently discovered that this extends to equine travelers, too. I’m a pilot, and earlier this year, I was flying a jet that was transporting 18 race horses from Florida to California. When I stopped in Dallas to refuel, the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit stopped working, which meant the engines wouldn’t start. I didn’t have access to the equipment needed to restart the engines of a plane that size, and if I didn’t fix the problem soon, I was going to have to off-load the horses. Desperate to avoid a logistical nightmare, I phoned the DAL control tower and was connected to the Employee on-duty, JR C. (Manager, Ramp and Operations). JR listened to my dilemma and instantly offered the use of Southwest’s equipment, which successfully started my plane’s engines and allowed me to safely deliver the plane’s four-legged passengers to their new home. On my trip home from Tampa, Florida, Flight Attendant Donna G. was making her way down the aisle to collect trash. I saw that the woman sitting next to me was going to throw away her pop-top, but I asked her if I could keep it. As the plane was preparing for landing, Donna walked over to my row and handed me a cup full of pop-tops that she had collected from the rest of the Passengers. I was so amazed that she had not only picked up on the fact that I was saving pop-tops but also had taken the time to collect them for me. Donna had no way of knowing that I save them for a school that serves students with special needs. She also had no way of knowing that my original flight home had been canceled and I’d had to miss a day of work, which had put me in quite a grumpy mood. Thank you to Donna for making me happy again. To get the scoop, University of California, Riverside researchers used Electronically Activated Recorders, or EARs, to periodically listen in on the conversations of 467 participants for two to five days. Published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, the study found about 5 percent of a typical day—or 52 minutes in a 16-hour waking day—was spent spilling the tea. But there’s no need to fret about trash talk: 75 percent of the gossip was categorized as neutral, more focused on sharing social information than petty opinions. “It’s not salacious or even that exciting, but it’s gossip because the person the participant is talking about is not there,” says lead author Megan Robbins, an assistant professor of psychology at UCR. “It’s not evaluating either positively or negatively, so it’s just in that neutral tone.” Go ahead: Pass it on.

Forget “drunk as a skunk.” In Aztec mythology, it’s another bushy-tailed critter that really knows how to have a good time. The 400 intoxicated and divine rabbits collectively called Centzon Tōtōchtin are often associated with pulque, the ancient Mexican drink made from the agave plant. ATX Cocina in Austin, Texas, specializes in tequilas and mezcals, but the Conejo Borracho (Spanish for “drunken rabbit”) instead gets its kick from a helping of Deep Eddy Original Vodka. The drink’s light agave nectar wouldn’t be totally unfamiliar to the Aztecs. The addition of carrot juice, however, could only be a nod to the modern American myth of a wisecracking bunny with a penchant for smart-alecky catchphrases. What’s up, Doc?

MAKE IT → Combine 1½ ounces Deep Eddy Original Vodka, ¾ ounce Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, ¼ ounce light agave nectar, ¾ ounce lemon juice, and 1 ounce carrot juice. Shake and pour directly into a rocks glass. Swirl in beet puree* and garnish with candied ginger. *Cut and season red beets, wrap them in foil with a splash of oil and water, and roast in oven at 400 degrees for 1 hour. Remove and puree.

According to the 2018 Employee Experience Report from Udemy, an online learning platform, more than a third of us feel it’s appropriate to use GIFs and emojis on the clock. This shift stems in large part from changing office culture and communication habits. “People are moving to tools like Slack and away from email,” says Shelley Osborne, Udemy’s head of learning and development. “We aren’t working the same way, and a lot of our day-to-day life is moving into the workplace. We text far more than we phone; we’re much less likely to send a card—we expect our communication to be fast.” In other words, why type out a lengthy explanation when a simple OL will do?

Or, more accurately, with people dressed as mice. D’Arcy Carden, watching a Christmas play with her family as a young girl, was entranced by the story in front of her, and a love of acting was born. “Afterward, the cast was waiting outside the door to greet the children. It was that moment of ‘Hold on a second! The people I just saw on that stage are here in front of my eyes and they’re talking to me,’” she says. “It was the biggest mind-blowing thing my little 4-year-old brain had ever seen.” Now, with roles on NBC’s The Good Place and HBO’s Barry, she still occasionally feels that same sense of wonderment, even as she prompts similar reactions in viewers. Carden, 39, grew up in Danville, California, and cut her teeth in community theater before attending Southern Oregon University, where she graduated with a BFA in theater and did what she refers to as “serious stuff ”—plenty of Shakespeare and other straight plays. A long tenure at Upright Citizens Brigade followed, both in New York and Los Angeles, where she honed her improv and sketch comedy skills alongside a cast of future stars, including Jason Mantzoukas and Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson (Carden gueststarred on the Comedy Central show throughout its five-season run). “It’s a lucky thing to know what you want to do as a kid, but it’s also a weird thing,” she says. “It was almost like I never had another option. It’s not a smart way to live your life, but it was the only thing I could do. I’m still sort of pinching myself that I’m able to act for a living.” After close to a decade on the UCB stage, Carden had her breakthrough moment in 2016, when she landed a role on The Good Place. The sitcom, created by Parks and Recreation mastermind Mike Schur, centers on Eleanor Shellstrop, played by Kristen Bell, who, after a fatal accident, is unnerved to find herself in a perky afterlife known as “the Good Place.” Carden stars as Janet, a not-quite robot and personal assistant with infinite knowledge of the universe, who’s tasked with helping

Over the show’s three seasons, the characters have grappled with the idea of right and wrong, spurred by what they learn in the Good Place, the Bad Place, and even the Medium Place. And Janet, despite her artificially intelligent tendencies, goes through changes of her own—learning to lie, for one, leads to a few glitches. Season three presented Carden with a new challenge: In the episode “Janet(s),” she had to play her fellow castmates, who each had been changed into a version of Janet. Schur and the writers told Carden the plan before season three filming began. “I was so thrilled and honored, but there was a little part of me that was hoping they would decide not to do it. ‘Well, it was a nice thought, but we went a different way.’” Shooting the episode required Carden to film

human was,” she says. “So I had to sort of smack myself in the face and get it together.” Along with The Good Place, Carden films (sometimes concurrently) her recurring role on Barry, an Emmy-nominated dark comedy starring Bill Hader as a hit man trying to start a new life as an actor. Carden plays Natalie Greer, one of the members of Hader’s acting class, a role she landed the same month as Janet. What may seem like a lucky few weeks was the payoff of years of hard work. “There were so many times where I told myself, ‘It’s too late. You missed it.’ Even as a young, young, young person, I remember The All New Mickey Mouse Club had Ryan Gosling and Britney Spears and the other kids, and I remember thinking, ‘Well, it’s too late for me.’” Carden credits UCB with not only giving her confidence in performing but also a strong sense

while talking to a piece of tape on the wall or on a pole, a process she described as “so technical and strange and counterintuitive and not the way any of us have ever acted.” Help came in the form of co-star Ted Danson, who filmed the episode’s first scene with Carden. The Cheers veteran sat Carden down afterward to offer support, reminding her to focus on each character’s motivations while filming. “He was like, ‘You need to remember what you’re doing. You have to have the words make sense in your brain; otherwise, it’ll feel like gibberish,’” she says. “I mean, anytime you have Ted Danson giving you any sort of advice, you listen to it and take it in completely.” For Carden, finding that perfect balance “between robot-y, AI person, not-a-person, and human” hasn’t been without its challenges. “We want it to be right, but it’s kind of like, ‘What is right with her?’ because she’s evolving and changing,” she says. “We’ve been very wary of not pushing her too quickly into ‘human zone.’” That gradual shift led to a surprising moment in the season three finale, where Janet and Eleanor discuss, essentially, what it means to be human. “If there were an answer I could give you to how the universe works, it wouldn’t be special,” Carden says in the scene. “… But since nothing seems to make sense, when you find something or someone that does, it’s euphoria.” Carden’s dialogue represents the best of Mike Schur comedies—a scene that makes you laugh and just as suddenly makes you think. “I was really frustrated with myself [while filming] because I knew the character Janet would not be crying through this speech, but D’Arcy the

of her own comedic voice. It’s also meant being a part of a close-knit circle of friends, many of whom have guest-starred on The Good Place. “It’s exciting to have struggled and clawed our way through, and to have done shows at the tiniest theaters for like 10 people, and then, all of a sudden, it’s ‘Oh, I get to be in a scene with Jason Mantzoukas or Brandon Scott Jones or Eugene Cordero,’” she says. “We’ve just had such hilariously low times and now we get to live our dream. It’s hard to explain how surreal that is.” In June, Schur announced that The Good Place’s fourth season, premiering Sept. 26, would be its last. Considering the show’s success and consistent ratings, the decision was bittersweet. “Or I guess bitter,” Carden clarifies with a laugh. “The day-to-day work environment is so wonderful and pleasant and dreamy that all of us were hoping for a little longer. But if we did a season where fans were like, ‘Eh, you’re just kind of filling time,’ I would feel so bummed out.” As for what comes next, one season three moment—a bar brawl that gave Carden the chance to work with a fight choreographer and stunt team—provided some inspiration. “I would love to do some action-y thing where I get to blow something up. Like shoot a blowtorch.” Octane-powered blockbuster aside, Carden hopes to do something “as different from the last thing” as possible, whether that’s another kind of comedic role or a return to theater. Whatever it is, Carden’s already looking forward to it. “I love acting,” she says. “I love being on a set. I love falling in love with your cast and getting to know them. This ping-pong table has become the site of a showdown. It’s the O.K. Corral of table tennis. But instead of multiple gunslingers on either side, there are only two old men holding paddles. And one is my father. My dad, Jay Arenschield, is crouched like a shortstop, swinging his arms to keep his muscles loose, stopping once to brush his white hair out of his eyes. His opponent, a 74-year-old Californian named David, looks tough, if slightly stoop-shouldered: lean frame. Tanned skin. What appears to be a tailored polo shirt. The man’s eyes are locked on my dad. His mouth is set in a fierce line. But Dad, 73, is looking pretty ferocious himself. He bounces a ping-pong ball on the floor a couple times. He nods at his opponent. He tosses it into the air with his left hand, and then flicks the paddle in his right, firing the ball off the table and over the net. They volley. David scores first. From the sidelines, Dad’s youngest brother—my 65-year-old uncle, Ricky— claps his hands. “C’mon, Jay; don’t let up,”

Uncle Ricky says. “You get an offensive shot, you take it.” “C’mon, Jay. C’mon, c’mon,” adds their friend Kerry. “C’mon, man. You got this.” We’re in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the National Senior Games, a once-everytwo-years Olympic-style event that invites athletes ages 50 to over 100 to flex their athletic prowess in everything from archery to pickleball. Earlier in the week, a 103-year-old woman made National Senior Games history as the oldest woman to compete in—and win—both the 50- and 100-meter dash. Just two days before, Uncle Ricky and Kerry competed in the men’s doubles tournament, placing seventh in the country in their age bracket. Dad had competed in that tournament, too, only he and his partner lost in two quick and heartbreaking matches. Now, we’re watching Dad as he tries to get his first win, and soon, other players are gathering to watch—people he’s never

y dad’s ping-pong group is something special, a diverse group of mostly older men at a time when “diversity” and “older men” are not phrases I often connect. The group started when one of my dad’s friends, Dhia Aldoori, a physician who fled Iraq during Saddam Hussein’s reign, realized he needed something to keep his body moving as he got older. Dhia—everyone calls him “Doc”—had played soccer for nearly his entire life. But he didn’t think his body would hold up on the soccer field forever, and, besides, the Ohio seasons didn’t always allow him to play soccer outside. After some research, Doc settled on ping-pong. Then, he convinced the clinic that employs him to let him set

up a ping-pong table in one of its conference rooms. That was around 2011, and at first, it was just Doc and Mary Mullins, a patient service representative at the clinic. Then, they started inviting patients, who invited friends, who told other friends, and now, around 30 people show up regularly to play. The clinic is in my hometown of Brunswick, Ohio, where my parents still live, and by 2014, that circle had widened to include my dad. I’d met many of the players during the handful of visits I’d made to their practices, when my husband and I would bring our 2-year-old son to watch “Baba” play ping-pong. But it wasn’t until the Ohio Senior Olympics in the summer of 2018, the tournament that qualified Dad for the national games, that I really understood how tight these friendships had become. My dad was on the court in Columbus, standing with a few of his ping-pong buddies, getting ready for his final match. He took a deep breath and sized up his opponent. He’d dispatched two tough players from Dayton already, and now he had to take on a Michigan resident who looked like a retired weightlifter. If Dad won, he’d take home a gold medal and a qualifying score to compete in the national games. The match was a best-of-five-game series, each game played to 11 points, and he had to win by two. I watched Ricky put a hand on my dad’s shoulders, look him in the eyes, and lay down the law. “If you get up 10–5, no holding back,” my uncle said. “You go for the jugular.” Nearby, Doc nodded. “Do it.” Dad looked to his doubles partner, a gentle-hearted retired scientist named Rob, who emigrated from India, and Rob smiled. “You can do this, Jay,” he said. And then, Dad strode on the court, and won.

met until this tournament, from Virginia and Texas and New York—and they’re applauding my dad and cheering him on. The whole thing feels surreal: Dad is competing on a national level in a sport he only started taking seriously a couple years ago, in his 70s. I sit there on the sidelines, listening as his friends and his wife—my mom—cheer him on. It’s his first match in the first round of a possible seven-round tournament; each match is a best-offive-game series. If Dad loses two matches in this round, he’s out of the tournament. He is one of 44 men aged 70–74 competing. David is kicking my dad’s butt, blasting every shot off corners and sending my dad lunging in wild directions. Dad is sweating, breathing hard— at one point, after he misses a serve, he throws his head back in frustration. But he’s also grinning and laughing and making jokes. He’s flashing smiles at my mom, basically flirting. He’s practically bubbling over with happiness. And I think: When I am 73, please let me have this kind of life.

After the Ohio Senior Olympics, Dad and his friends started training in earnest. They traveled to other pingpong clubs, testing themselves against different players. Doc hired a coach, a kid in his 20s who is trying to make the actual U.S. Table Tennis team. My dad started being more conscientious about what he ate: fewer late-night potato chips, more vegetables. I’d visit their practices and watch as they tested new serving styles or worked on returning harder shots, and I got to know the rest of the group: Kerry, my uncle’s doubles partner, an ardent Catholic who jokes and laughs nonstop. Doyle, who plays the banjo and has been wheelchair-bound since a motorcycle accident in his teens—and who has been competing in table tennis tournaments around the world for decades, beating able-bodied competitors at every stop. Tammy, Doyle’s wife, who only recently started playing, but who competed alongside Doyle in the mixed doubles tournament in Albuquerque. There are others—Leon, who won a gold medal in the 85–89 mixed doubles tournament in Albuquerque; Mary, who is not yet 50 and too young to compete in the senior games; and Victor, who looks like an aging movie star. As their training for the national games ramped up, their practices got more intense. Three or four times a week, they’d get together in that same little conference room at the health center where Doc and Mary work. They’d push the conference tables to the walls, drag out two high-priced pingpong tables, and start playing. Sometimes, there was music— at one practice, Doc fired up Jim Croce’s “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown,” turned to my dad with a sly smile and said, “This one’s for you, Jay.” (I didn’t ask. I didn’t want to know.) And the thing was, they weren’t just playing ping-pong. They shared meals—lunches and dinners, sometimes with their spouses, sometimes without. When my cousin, Uncle

Ricky’s daughter, wanted to build a treehouse for her sons, Doc volunteered to come help. There were times they set down their paddles and talked about social issues. They don’t share the same politics, but they agreed to start with respect and go from there, and so they were able to talk about immigration and health care and climate change. It was almost like they were trying to get better, not just at ping-pong, but as people. On nights when the group didn’t play, Dad headed into the basement of my parents’ house. Catty-corner from the shop where he dabbles, purely as an amateur, in woodworking, he keeps a ping-pong table with a robot that serves ping-pong balls over the net with varying speeds and spins. His training was on pace and his game was getting stronger. Every time I asked him about it, he’d say he felt good, that he was just trying to do his best, that he couldn’t wait to see what the national competition was like. He and my mom booked a bed and breakfast in Old Town Albuquerque for a week around the Senior Games, and she started making plans to visit Santa Fe and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, to sample New Mexico’s famous chile rellenos, to explore the desert valleys. And then my dad cut off his finger. don’t want you to worry,” my mom started, and if the words had had physical form, they would have quivered, “but we are in the emergency room.” It was just before lunchtime on April 17, nine weeks before the National Senior Games, when my mom’s number flashed on my phone. It was a workday, the middle of the day, a strange time for her to call. Dad had been in the middle of a woodworking project, sawing a chunk of wood into smaller, thinner pieces, when the blade sucked in the shim he’d been using as a guide, dragging Dad’s finger along with it. The blade sliced his

I wasn’t there, but the pictures I saw later were gruesome: The tip of Dad’s finger lolls to the side at nearly a right angle, exposing muscle, flesh, and bone. He was lucky in a few regards. One: The doctors thought that his finger could be reattached, so he might not lose it entirely. Two: He hadn’t lost much blood. And three: The finger happened to be on his left hand. His right hand—his paddle hand—was unharmed. Mom didn’t want us to make the two-hour drive to their house. She’d called my uncle Ricky and he’d come to the hospital immediately. Yes, she said, Dad was going to be OK. No, she didn’t know whether he could still play ping-pong. Doc canceled ping-pong practice that evening. “No one could imagine playing with your dad in the hospital,” he said. My dad went home later that night, and when I talked to him the

next day, he sounded as dejected as I’d ever heard him. “It was stupid,” he told me. “I’m giving up woodworking. I don’t need to be taking those kinds of risks.” Staying healthy for his grandkids was the most important thing to him. Nothing else—not

my dad’s face in a sea of marathon runners. Once, he stumbled across the finish line, face white as—well, as a ping-pong ball. He’d had a bad cold that day, and 26.2 miles is a long way, but he had done the training and figured he should give the race a shot. He forced a smile

He is not, from what I have seen, the kind of person who gives up. woodworking, not ping-pong—was worth jeopardizing his ability to play with them. But what about the Senior Games? “I just don’t know,” he said. “It just doesn’t feel like it matters.” I remember being a kid, shivering in the early spring wind that sweeps down from Canada and over Lake Erie before swirling around the buildings of downtown Cleveland, and watching for

I don’t remember what he said to her, but if I had to guess, I’d say he picked his go-to line from the movie Tombstone, one uttered by a character as he stands, pale, sweating, and drunk, in a saloon. “Not me,” my dad would have quoted. “I’m in my prime.” He is not, from what I have seen, the kind of person who gives up. Doc was the first person to

Dad was under strict “No-Ping-PongAt-Least-For-Now” orders from his doctor, and, while practice for everyone else had resumed, he was relegated to the easy chair in my parents’ family room. Doc wanted to make sure my dad wasn’t lonely. A couple days later, Rob, my dad’s doubles partner, called to see if Dad wanted to go to lunch. Uncle Ricky came over and cut the grass, so my mom wouldn’t have to—Dad wasn’t allowed to push the mower because of his finger. When Dad went back to practice (of course, he went back to practice), his friends applauded, and then started easing him back into his game. The doctor had told Dad he could play, but that he needed to keep his injured finger safe. That meant no lunging in ways that might cause him to fall, no swinging his arm as he served and accidentally knocking it into a table or wall. Dad’s friends policed this the same way they played ping-pong: mercilessly. he air inside the Albuquerque Convention Center is filled with the rhythmic sounds of ping-pong balls bouncing off tables and shoes squeaking on a linoleum floor. There’s a guy dressed like Uncle Sam—red vest, redwhite-and-blue top hat, American flags draping from his armpits—a 74-year-old from North Carolina who will eventually come in second place in Dad’s singles tournament. I can’t speak for the pickleball games, but the table tennis here in Albuquerque is intense. A team from Slovakia in matching warm-up jackets crushed almost everyone in the 65–69 men’s doubles tournament. An unassuming player from California flummoxed his opponents with the most wicked, tricky, spiraling-paddle serve that anyone in

A player from Virginia moved so gently, so gracefully, so assuredly during his matches that another spectator called him “Fred Astaire.” The guy who ended up winning both a gold in his doubles tournament and the bronze in singles showed up wearing a USA Table Tennis jersey emblazoned with his last name. On Dad’s court, things are not going well. David wins the first game in a best-of-five match. In game two, my dad scores a couple points, but doesn’t score again, and now David is winning two games to none. When David wins game three, a shutout match, my dad places the ball on the table, shakes David’s hand, and walks over to the sidelines where his friends and my mom are waiting. “Don’t give up, Jay,” Kerry says. Dad takes a swig of water, pulls a towel across his neck, and heads back out to the court to face the next competitor. If he loses again, he’s out.

time for the things and people that make us happiest, the things and people that light up our souls? What would happen if we invested time and energy in those relationships? There is a whole body of research on this question, from places like Harvard, Northwestern, and Michigan State universities, and they all say some version of the same thing: Having close friendships is a predictor of longevity, can keep you healthier, can even lower your blood pressure. Close friendships, a pair of studies published in 2017 found, can be better for your health than close family relationships. I know all this. But here I am, in my 30s, sending and receiving “we should really hang out” text messages that never come to fruition. And here’s my dad, in his 70s, with a whole new group of friends, so close that they’re almost a surrogate family. All because of ping-pong.

Maybe a higher power was pulling for the pastor, maybe Dad was just too nervous, or maybe the pastor was just better at ping-pong, but it’s a deflating start for my dad. He shakes his head, looks up at the ceiling like the answers might be written there, and sighs. He needs a win, badly. Kerry leans over to me. “He’s

gotta get some confidence going forward, just a little spark,” he says in a low voice. Game two has already started and, almost immediately, my dad picks up a great point and goes on a roll. He’s up 8–6 when the pastor starts mounting a comeback. The pastor picks up a point, then Dad scores again, and again, and now he has 10 points. Game to 11. The pastor scores, but Dad takes it home. Game two: Dad. The match is tied. “The pendulum just swung,” Uncle Ricky tells my dad. “Now you got the momentum.” Dad wins game three and goes up two games to one. One more will give him his first win in a national tournament match. He serves, and the pastor sends

and while the stakes are high— the winner moves on to the next round—we are all still soaring from Dad’s first-ever national win. Another win, at this point, would be gravy. The guy who plays ping-pong like Fred Astaire dances sits next to me to watch. His name, he tells me, is Weishuang Qu, and he lives in Virginia. Dad is playing Weishuang’s doubles partner, and so far, Dad is winning. Dad goes up 6–3, and Weishuang tells me that he has been to this national tournament many years in a row now, and every time, he leaves feeling inspired. “Here, I feel we are among friends,” he says. “And we are very lucky to have friends that play together. It’s like a festival.” Just then, Dad crushes a shot over the net, and Weishuang’s partner can’t answer it. Game one, Dad. He needs two more wins to move on. He won’t get them. Weishuang’s partner has figured out my dad’s game and wins the second game, then the third, then the fourth. Weishuang is applauding, but before he goes to congratulate his friend, he looks at me. “Your father is athletic, and he can improve. He could play well into his 80s.” Then, Dad is off the court and shaking hands with Kerry and my uncle and hugging me and my mom. “I’ll get him next time,” he says. “I would like to get to that next round.” Weishuang comes over to shake my dad’s hand and offer a little ping-pong advice, and when they’re done talking, Dad has a wide smile on his face. The next National Senior Games will be in 2021, in Florida, and Dad has a game plan. “I know what I need to work on,” he says. “Two years till Fort Lauderdale.”

t’s a broiling spring day, and I’m pedaling down Cleveland’s wildflower-lined Towpath Trail, which follows an old pack mule route on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. In the 19th century, mules would pull ships along the river. Today, I’m fighting a different battle: I haven’t been on a bike in two years. But as I wheeze my way up a sun-splashed hillside toward the archway of the Hope Memorial Bridge, I can’t help but be spirited away by the scenery. Across the river, skyscrapers and brownstones bask in the sun. Through the arch, I see a verdant ocean of trees and—seeming to sprout from the greenery—smokestacks and industrial buildings. Factories like these were the engines of prosperity that supercharged Cleveland into a vibrant metropolis. Gilded

Age tycoons like John D. Rockefeller made their fortunes in Cleveland and called the city home, walking in its parks and museums and funding some of its most stunning architecture. Those boom times came with a downside, with industry taking a toll on the natural landscape. As the Cuyahoga became a major artery for industrial transport in the early 20th century, it earned a reputation for pollution and environmental degradation that culminated with a 1969 fire on the river— the last and most notorious of a number of blazes caused by the industrial waste.

Don’t Stop Believing My ride along the Towpath is the perfect orientation to central Cleveland. It also leaves me famished. Luckily, the trail delivers me to Sokolowski’s University Inn. Savory aromas waft from the windows of the restaurant, an oldschool dining hall with nourishing Polish comfort food. West Side Market

As I wolf down pierogies under a stuffed deer head in the dining room, a multigenerational crowd applauds the piano player who’s busy playing away in the corner. With a mouthful of potato and cheese, I scan the room. This collision of historical intrigue—Sokolowski’s claims to be the city’s oldest family-owned restaurant—and gluttonous joy is foreshadowing adventures to come. Once the last morsel is gone, I take a stroll around Tremont, a historic, blue-collar part of town that is also one of Cleveland’s fastest-growing neighborhoods. Postwar family cottages are the default here, but you’ll also happen upon newer construction, a testament to the national interest Cleveland has lately been garnering from both homebuyers and tastemakers. It’s a far cry from the days when a common (but inaccurate) outside perception of Cleveland was one of a city in decline. It’s true the industrial boom that catalyzed the city’s early growth came to end in the 1960s, when factory closings and a suburban exodus led to hard questions about Cleveland’s future. Between 1970 and 2013, the city lost about half its population. But what’s missing from that narrative is the fact that the Clevelanders who stayed committed to creating a new future for themselves. Health care providers like University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic, both affiliated with Case Western Reserve University, expanded their facilities and educational offerings. The city invested millions of dollars in creating and updating cultural institutions like the Rock &

bronze statues of sailors and soldiers. But the neighboring buildings are what really catch my eye. The Arcade, a gargantuan structure that served as the first indoor shopping center in the U.S., is an ode to Victorian-era opulence. I wander past the classically inspired Cleveland Public Library. Minutes later, I’m gawking at a giant chandelier suspended over the street—the defining landmark of the Playhouse Square theater district, where 11 venues make up the country’s largest performing arts center outside of Manhattan. Even the local Heinen’s supermarket is tucked away in the magnificent Cleveland Trust Rotunda, a historic landmark that opened as a bank in 1908. The marble atrium where elites once managed their finances now offers sushi, salads, and coffee. The beer and wine coolers are on the second floor rotunda. Up there, you can enjoy a draft lager while gazing up at the green and gold skylight. It’s a bit too early for beer (I guess), so I cross the street and drop off my luggage at the Kimpton Schofield Hotel. Within minutes, I’m zooming back into downtown—this time, on one of the hotel’s complimentary bicycles.

in diffuse light. Just outside the doors of the brewery, legions of young people are lining up outside the nightclubs and bars that constitute The Flats. Shipyards and iron furnaces used to be the main attractions here. Today, The Flats is one of Cleveland’s premier nightlife districts. Here, you can slurp down oysters, play bocce ball, and dance to music from visiting DJs. (If you’re feeling really saucy, you can even put a down payment on one of the new apartments being built here.) These are just a few ways that Clevelanders like to blow off steam.

It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll The next day, I take the train to the Ohio City neighborhood and spend the morning putzing around what’s known as Hingetown, where a stretch of buildings is emblazoned with murals of wild animals, wilder cityscapes, and, in one instance, a slice of pepperoni pizza that’s left a long greasy smear in its wake. These are the handiwork of local artists, but Cleveland’s proximity to major cities like Chicago and New York also ensures a steady stream of visiting creatives. At Spaces, a working studio where visitors can admire work by rotating resident artists, I see two memorable video exhibits, including a visual ode to an abandoned country club in Cleveland and its secret history of joys and heartbreaks. I have lunch down the street from Spaces at The Flying Fig, where chef Karen Small tells me about growing up in the suburb of Shaker Heights. (Her grandfather’s backyard garden was her introduction to locally sourced cuisine, and her restaurant takes a similar farm-to-table approach.) I then head across the street to the West Side Market. There, dozens and dozens of vendors hawk cured meats and fish, artisan cheeses, and confectionary treats like the pizzelle waffle cookies that I’m soon nibbling. Later that afternoon at a laptop-filled espresso bar called Beviamo cafe, I think that hard times can inspire not only creativity, but also a healthy sense of rebellion. In Cleveland, whether you’re having lunch or exploring a new neighborhood, there’s friendly mischief in the air around you. It’s a wonderfully scrappy and idiosyncratic contrast to the extravagant architecture I saw downtown. What makes Cleveland’s creative and playful nature especially compelling is the feeling that Clevelanders aren’t striving to blow your socks off. They’re doing the things they love for themselves and for each other, first and foremost. You’re just invited to the show.

All Tomorrow’s Parties As the sun disappears behind thunderheads, I catch a ride to Slavic Village, a suburban enclave with roots in Eastern Europe. In the 19th century, Cleveland took in thousands of immigrants. Today, the population of Slavic Village reflects the diversity of modern Cleveland, and the air here still seems to retain the hopeful, electric feeling of arriving in a new country.

Roll Hall of Fame and Cleveland Browns Stadium (today known as FirstEnergy Stadium). And a burgeoning tech startup scene has minted new local entrepreneurs. Cleveland’s creativity is resilient. On a leafy street away from the main drags, I find Forest City Brewery, which is housed in a 1915 timber-frame factory. The beer garden is decked out with colorful camp chairs and, just for good measure, the tallest mulberry tree in Ohio. I head inside and procure a flight of beers. I trade notes with a dude sitting at the bar near me. Next thing I know, I’m jotting down the names of other local purveyors as my new friend dictates a list. I scribble furiously—there are more than 30 microbreweries in Cleveland—and try to keep up with his recommendations: Market Garden, Fat Head’s, Great Lakes, and more. I eventually find myself sipping a clove-rich Hefeweizen on the outdoor riverside patio at Collision Bend Brewing Co. A tangerine sunset bathes the city

Penny Barend of Saucisson

I step into Saucisson, a butcher shop and the brainchild of Cleveland restaurant veterans Melissa Khoury and Penny Barend. With an emphasis on local meat, the chefs have attracted national attention. They’re flying to New York tomorrow for a Food Network taping, but they’ve generously made time to offer me samples of their beer brats and heavenly pork terrine with cinnamon and golden raisins. Creations like these have been dished out at the annual “Village Feast” that Saucisson caters for Slavic Village residents. “We shut down the street outside the shop and put out communal tables, and it’s a free community meal,” Khoury says. “Food is a common denominator. We seat everybody family-style. We encourage people to break up and sit with someone they didn’t arrive with, to interact with each other, and to make friends.” With the smoked meats and community-minded ethos of Saucisson lingering on my palate, I take a contemplative hike in nearby Garfield Park Reservation. This is one of Cleveland’s century-old Metroparks, which make up an incredible 23,000-acre “Emerald Necklace” of nature reservations where you can jog, bike, and spot rare birds. As I wind through the maplewoods, I see the white-tailed rump of a deer disappearing into the bushes. I continue to Mill Creek Falls, a 48 foot-tall monster of a cascade. You could easily spend a week exploring the Metroparks, which speaks to their scale and accessibility. Imagine if

every city operated on the idea that everyone deserves easy access to the beauty of the outdoors. This idea of civic equity is the foundation of the restaurant where I have dinner reservations tonight. But “restaurant” is only half the story. Located in Shaker Square, a bustling hub that borders Cleveland and Shaker Heights, Edwins Leadership Institute & Restaurant is a nonprofit education program for formerly incarcerated adults who want to build careers in the culinary and hospitality industries. Founded by Brandon Chrostowski, Edwins provides free housing, legal services, job coaching to students in the program, and has a 95 percent employment rate for graduates. Students practice and hone their skill sets by running the restaurant, which offers fine dining in a welcoming atmosphere. Chrostowski, tall and wiry with silver hair, is waiting for me when I arrive. He explains the motivation behind the restaurant: Everyone, including the formerly incarcerated, deserves another chance. In the dining room, I meet Nickole Rivera, a student who hopes to travel and work as a chef after graduation. Rivera’s quick to steer me toward a few dishes. I go for the pistachio-crusted trout with haricots verts and black truffle beurre blanc. Every bite is heaven—rich, buttery, and finely balanced. I watch Chrostowski and the hosts welcome new diners and ask returning guests how they’ve been. (At one point, Chrostowski informs me that the

Knowing that this generosity and kindness extend to these Edwins students who are forging new chapters of their lives is the most satisfying part of the meal.

I cast a ballot for Nine Inch Nails and imagine the band playing on the shores of the lake. I’d be sure to come back for that concert. Whether it’s your first time here or just your latest visit, you’re guaranteed a show. Because this is a city that’s long pushed at the limits of the imagination, through hell or high water. Along with the sound of crunching guitars and kick drums, there’s a sense of innovation, team spirit, and shared triumph that you often find anywhere a rock band meets to perform—whether it’s a dusty garage or an arena stage. It’s the same feeling you get in Cleveland. Its current, as subtle and powerful as the Cuyahoga River, lifts you off your feet and whisks you away. The next morning, I catch a bus to University Circle, where Case Western Reserve University just built a stateof-the-art Health Education Campus for medical and dental students. Health care, particularly nursing, is among the university’s most prominent fields of study. Thousands of Cleveland residents avail themselves of the affordable services offered by the university’s Cleveland Clinic. The other big attractions at University Circle are the museums and parks found here. I meet up with Chris Ronayne, the president of University Circle Inc., the local community management organization. We walk to the Cleveland Museum of Art on the Nord Greenway, a 2,200-foot footpath that takes us by gardens, sculptures, and a lagoon accented by lounging sunbathers. We pass a tent stuffed with costumes and giant puppets for an upcoming parade, and suddenly, we’re standing before the art museum itself. Nearby, I notice that a bronze cast of Auguste Rodin’s “The Thinker” is missing its lower legs. In 1970, in a climate of extreme political unrest, a bomb was detonated at the statue’s base early one morning. No one was injured, and no one was ever arrested or charged for the bombing, but the statue was left damaged. “Instead of repairing it, the city, crazy as it was, decided to honor the history of what happened, so it tells a story unto itself,” Ronayne says with a wry smile. I spend the next few hours viewing storied artifacts in three neighboring institutions. I take in the Gordon Parks photography exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art, which offers free admission for its permanent collections. Then, I wander over to the Museum of Natural History. Next up is the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, where I visit a tropical biosphere and spy on some reptiles contentedly inhaling insects. Before journeying back downtown, I peer into the luminous foyer of Severance Hall, where the Cleveland Orchestra plays. In the summer, the internationally acclaimed orchestra plays weekend concerts at the Blossom Music Center’s beautiful and spacious outdoor venue. There’s no show on the slate for tonight, so I’ll have to return another time. But that’s not to say my final day here will be lacking for musical accompaniment. In Cleveland, all roads lead to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The building, featuring a glass pyramid structure designed by the legendary architect I.M. Pei, is perched next to Lake Erie. The museum collection features artifacts like Diana Ross’ evening gowns, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust jumpsuit, and a working Alice Cooper pinball 70 southwest september 2019

When a local hardware store suddenly closed in her community, Mary Waggoner told her husband, Mike, that “someone with some guts” should open a new store. The Waggoners partnered with another couple and met with the Ace Hardware team. They were impressed by Ace’s core values and its focus on helping retailers grow. Two years ago, the Waggoners opened their place: Ace Hardware of Butler, Pennsylvania. Ace, a cooperative with more than 4,500 individually owned U.S. stores, provided training and in-store coaches

He researched locations and, with his parents, Renee and Bob, designed and built a store that customers would be able to call their place: the family opened their Ace Hardware in Bluffton, South Carolina, in 2015. “Each Ace is owned by the local store owners, so at the end of the day, we have freedom regarding our store,” Heuser says. “It’s what makes the business model successful. And Ace corporate is still there supporting you.” Heuser understood how to structure a business’ finances. He knew the importance of developing a strong culture for his staff. But, before Ace, he had no background in retail or hardware. “Without Ace’s help, I wouldn’t have a successful business today,” he says.

JOHN BRETON WAS immersed in home swimming pools long before he took the plunge with a Pool Scouts franchise in McKinney, Texas. “Growing up, we were the house with the pool where kids could gather,” Breton says. “My parents could keep an eye on their two teen boys, and we held family barbecues and other events.” After working in marketing technology with big name brands, he yearned to go into business for himself. Then he found Pool Scouts, a franchise offering pool cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs. He knew it was a way to give people the kinds of family moments that last a lifetime. “The pool can be the center of family life,” he says. Breton was well-versed in business, but he didn’t know much about pool maintenance. That was fine with Pool Scouts, which put him through its two-week “pool school” at the company’s Virginia Beach headquarters. Training covered marketing, advertising, and office operations as well as a week in the field servicing pools.

I loved growing up with records—the actual tangible LPs. I would read the credits, look at lyrics, and dream about the pictures on albums. I also love making records, but with technology, the way we put our playlists together now is almost antithetical to creating a whole artistic statement with a beginning, middle, and end because songs are cherry-picked and put into different playlists. I’m going to continue to make music, but Threads felt like a great way to sum up my career by paying tribute to the people who have not only inspired me but also been a part of my creative life. It’s also a way to pay it forward and acknowledge artists who are continuing the singer-songwriter tradition of connecting with an audience through truth-telling.
