THIS IS PHOENIX. Somewhere, the season for swimsuits is fleeting. Somewhere, restaurant patios sit forlorn. Somewhere, surfing requires an ocean and heading to the mountains means packing a suitcase. But not here. Not in Phoenix. Here, sunbathing is a ritual to be thankful for even past Thanksgiving. Here, dining in the great outdoors is on the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Here, any resort guest with a pair of board shorts can hang ten, and a trip to the mountains is as simple as walking from the lobby to the trailhead.

This is Phoenix. Why take your next vacation merely somewhere when you could make it memorable here?

Another year is upon us—and this one marks Southwest’s 42nd of giving Americans the Freedom to Fly. A lot has changed since we first took flight in 1971. That, of course, shouldn’t surprise anyone. What began as an upstart airline serving three Texas cities has grown to carry more Passengers in the United States than any other. Today, one out of every four domestic passengers is flying Southwest Airlines or AirTran Airways, which we acquired in May 2011. What strikes

me, however, is what hasn’t changed. When Southwest first started service, the Original Employees exhibited a Maverick Spirit and a resolve to make air transportation affordable, convenient, and fun. Believe it or not, that concept was completely foreign in air travel at the time. Flying was a luxury for the rich and elite. Southwest was the disruptive force that changed all that. Southwest was built on the idea of keeping costs low, offering low fares, operating safely and efficiently,

Customer Service in Action I recently received a commendation from a Customer who flew out of Akron-Canton, Ohio. Boarding her flight, she realized she had not only left her keys in her car, but had left the car running as well. She knew she didn’t have time to retrieve the keys and still make her flight, so our Employees offered to turn off and lock her car, and hold the keys in the baggage office until she returned. She told them where she parked and what she was driving. Sure enough, upon her return, her keys were waiting for her as promised.

extending better Customer Service than anyone else, and maintaining a convenient flight schedule—delivering you to your destination ontime, with a smile. Today, we still resolve to do all those things. And we resolve to do them better and better each and every year, with the help of the best Employees in the travel business. The airline industry is a game of inches, and less than a handful of Customers per flight can be the difference between a profit and a loss. If we lose focus on our core mission, we lose our niche, our competitive advantage, our brand, and ultimately our Customers. Sure, we’ve grown up a lot since the ’70s. We’re a much more dynamic and mature airline, and we continue to transform ourselves to meet the needs of our Customers. You can see that in our continued integration with AirTran; in our new Frequent Flyer program; in our new Products and Services; and, thanks to AirTran, which laid the foundation, in our planned expansion into new and exciting destinations beyond the continental United States, including San Juan, Puerto Rico. But as we age, our core values remain firmly intact. Just like the Maverick airline that set out to democratize the skies 42 years ago, we still resolve to be the nation’s Low-Fare Leader; to operate safely and efficiently; to offer Legendary Customer Service; and to fly when and where our Customers want to go. And we still have fun doing it. Thank you for coming along for the ride!

An afternoon at a lunch counter. A thousand arms linked at the elbow. A line of fire hoses. A pack of German Shepherds. A letter from a Birmingham jail. A children’s crusade. A devastating explosion. A world that would never be the same. The year was 1963, and as the whole world watched, events in Birmingham sparked the beginning of the end of a centuries-long struggle for freedom. In the year leading up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the city’s most courageous citizens fought for a world where we could all live as equals. And now, we celebrate their courage, their strength, their defiance — and their hard-won victory over oppression. Join us as we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Birmingham Civil Rights Campaign and experience some of the most prominent landmarks and monuments of the era, such as the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Walk in the footsteps of the citizens who changed the world forever. For more information on upcoming events planned for the Birmingham commemoration, visit 50yearsforward.com.

f1_star_bh.indd 16

As a student at Aviation High School in Queens, New York, Wayne Wright always knew what he wanted to be when he grew up—a line mechanic for an airline. And even after 17 years doing the job at Southwest Airlines, he still enjoys every minute he spends helping to keep our aircraft fit and ready to fly. All around Southwest, Wayne is affectionately known as “Goat Head.” “In a roundabout way, I came up with my own nickname simply by using the two-way radios in Maintenance,” Wayne says. “When I said ‘Go ahead,’ my thick New York accent came out the other receiver and sounded like ‘goat head.’ My Lead Manager brought it to everyone’s attention, and it stuck. I’ve been ‘Goat Head’ ever since.” And Wayne has stuck with Southwest Airlines all these years because he loves the Company and the People with whom he works. “One of my favorite things about Southwest is that all of the work groups in Oakland get along. We give each other the Freedom to be ourselves and to take care of our individual responsibilities, which makes for a stronger Team.” Everyone who works with Wayne knows that he’s a hard worker who loves the challenge of troubleshooting problems. In fact, Wayne loves that no two situations in Line Maintenance are ever the same. Wayne’s knack for problem solving even makes its way into his free time, as he works on old cars as a hobby. When he’s not fixing things, Wayne loves to travel to the East Coast to visit family in his home state of New York. He and his wife, Tara, have three kids: Wayne III, 12; Joshua, 15; and Olivia, 18. Wayne loves Southwest Airlines because he has a flexible schedule, which allows him to spend time traveling with his family, all while providing for their needs. The way Wayne sees it, Southwest gave him the job of his dreams, and it’s his mission every day to repay that gift. But really, Wayne is a gift to Southwest Airlines. The Company Culture thrives thanks to Employees like him. Keep up the good work, Goat Head! —Katie Boswell

Rapid Rewards Freedom Story

Chris Koehnecke I n fo r m at i o n S ec u r i t y A dv is o r , Da l l a s For Chris Koehnecke, timing is everything. As an information security advisor for a Big Four accounting firm, he has to be able to quickly respond to his clients’ needs. Whether he must provide information about a security program or assist in securing data and information systems, Chris can be there at a moment’s notice thanks to Southwest Airlines. One of Chris’ life mottos is “Ninety percent of success is showing up,” and he knows he can consistently rely on Southwest to get him to his clients ontime. Chris appreciates being able to take advantage of any of Southwest’s 77 cities because he works in many locations across the country. “Southwest makes it easy because of the sheer number of flights offered and the ease with which I can change flights,” he says. Chris also enjoys the perks of Southwest’s fully refundable Business Select fares, such as being able to change or cancel his flights when his travel plans shift. With priority boarding, he has first access to overhead bin space and can choose his preferred seat. He also earns more points with Business Select in Southwest’s Rapid Rewards Frequent Flyer program, which helps him reach A-List Preferred Status and qualify for the Companion Pass. That Companion Pass comes in handy when Chris plans vacations for himself and his fiancée. The couple met two years ago onboard a

Southwest flight and continues to fly Southwest Airlines for both personal and business travel. For Chris, Southwest Airlines is not just a way to get to and from work. With priority boarding, he and his colleagues can choose seats close together, and, thanks to the onboard WiFi, they can work on projects and forge business relationships during the commute. “We have really bonded around Southwest,” Chris says. We know that timing is crucial, and we are proud to be partners in business with our travelers. Thank you, Chris, for your continued loyalty. We are glad to deliver you—and all of our Customers—to your destinations ontime. —Alyssa Eliasen

From the Editor

TRAILBLAZER

Sometimes you have to take the moose by the antlers.

It’s a new year, and the tradition is to think to ourselves, Time for a new you. As inspiration, the staff of Spirit set out to learn a new trick or two (page 52). If you’re inclined to do the same, I’d like to offer a piece of advice: Think of what you’d be really bad at, and do that. Hear me out. I’m an expert at being bad at things. Nine years ago, for instance, my wife, Dorothy, decided we should buy 150 acres of meadow and woodland in New Hampshire. “What will I do with 150 acres?” I asked her. “You’ll think of something,” Dorothy said. And so I did. I learned one of the biggest new tricks of my life: building six miles of cross-country ski trails without heavy equipment. Being the world’s most impractical person, I can make tools fall apart just by looking at them. But I learned how to use a chain saw, build bridges, and manage a wildlife

habitat. To be honest, I’m not that great at any of it; but I’m way better than when I began. When there’s plenty of room for improvement, the improvement is that much sweeter. Remember when “well-rounded” was a compliment? Now it’s a euphemism for not being good at anything in particular. Yet, well-rounded people seem the most balanced. They fearlessly pursue their weaknesses, knowing that what doesn’t make them die of embarrassment makes them stronger. While they were learning their respective new tricks, the Spirit staff collectively pulled off yet another one: tweaking the regular departments of this magazine. We now have a “Wise Guide” section, another called “Eat Drink Sleep,” and a new back page—all to inspire you to take what you’re bad at and do great things. —Jay Heinrichs Editorial Director

I can’t stop thinking about your article, “The Heart of Darkness” [November 2012], and sharing it with my friends and family. Your treatment of the story was beautiful, and I want to thank you especially for so clearly conveying Mr. Khamisa’s philosophy and worldview regarding conflict and forgiveness. Most of us struggle with disappointment and resentment, often to the point that it becomes consuming. My own family has been faced with this lately, and I could not have stumbled upon your article at a better time. The idea that forgiveness is a gift to oneself is transforming and such an important concept to spread. If the men in your article could forgive, I daresay anyone can. Keep up the good work. You make an important point, Sarah. The story shows how forgiveness can be divine and life-changing. FULL OF HEART

LIVING PROOF

I read “The Heart of Darkness” on a Southwest fight to Orange County. What a beautifully written and remarkable story! As a 42-year-old father of three, I fought back tears the entire time. I’m proud of Southwest for choosing to publish such a positive, thought-provoking, and heartfelt piece. I hope to see more of the same in the future.

I enjoyed your piece on Azim Khamisa in the November issue of Spirit. It’s a story that is personal for me, as I am one of the kids whom he has helped through his programs. I now share the story of my life with others as a way of helping the next generation. Again, nice work.

On November 8, I boarded a Southwest flight from Reno, Nevada,

bound for Atlanta. As the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern Nevada in Reno, I was thinking about my sermon for the coming Sunday. I had nothing written when I left; I just knew that my theme was forgiveness. What a wonderful surprise it was to find your cover story! I was so moved by the piece about Azim Khamisa and Ples Felix that it became the anchor for a wonderful sermon I preached that next Sunday morning. What a blessing! — R e v. N e a l T. Profound INspiration

I read “A Story in Black & White” [October 2012] and felt compelled to thank you for publishing it. What a fascinating story. I found it to be sad and profound, but also lovely and inspiring. I am sorry to hear that the relationship which inspired Rachel Levin to write the article didn’t work out. However, I’m glad she was able to use the experience to share Shirley and Pat’s love with the rest of us. Thanks again. It made my flight a bit more pleasant. —J o s e B a e r g a W i nt e r G a r d e n , F l o r i d a

Girls Power

When HBO entrusted one of its precious prime-time Sunday slots to a relatively inexperienced, 25-year-old writer/director/actor, it expected something audacious. And that’s the comedy series it got. But if Lena Dunham’s Girls is bold, it’s also smart, sharply written, and revolutionary in its depiction of twentysomething women in the 21st century. The preoccupations of Hannah (Dunham, second from right) and her besties with sex, money, and knuckleheaded boyfriends may strike some as too bratty and blunt. If mature sitcom-ery is your thing, you might hang out in Cougar Town—while we go wild with season 2 of Girls.

When I approach a dish I think, What’s the simplest, best way to make this well, because I want to get back to the roots food that people grew up with, rather than serve something that’s overly messed with. Popcorn is a universal comfort food. It’s what you think of when you’re cuddling up in a blanket and watching a movie. A Proper Cupping “People often request a coffee cocktail after dinner. To give them an option other than the usual Irish coffee, I wanted to formulate something of my own. The biscotti liqueur is sweet and nutty, just like biscotti; and amaro, an Italian digestif, is bittersweet. Ron Zacapa Centenario is a blend of Guatemalan rums that have been aged between six and 23 years, so it’s rich and caramely. The drink has coffee, which wakes you up a little; the amaro adds a nice cleansing effect;

and then you have this subtle sweetness, too. A cupping is a coffee tasting where you sample different varieties side by side to compare and contrast, so I thought it was an apt name. It’s great after a meal, and it allows me to introduce people to some ingredients they may not have ordered on their own.” who Jane Lopes, beverage director where The Catbird Seat web thecatbirdseatrestaurant.com

Opened in December 2011, Park City’s prime crash pad for styleminded ski bums is the result of an exquisite, floor-to-ceiling renovation that converted an 1889 limestone schoolhouse into a 12-room bed-and-breakfast. The design team’s supplies? Wrought-iron beds, reclaimed barn wood, century-old European chandeliers, and luxurious Pratesi linens. The social media site’s users—who total one billion, or 1/7 of the earth’s population—are giving this feature a big thumbs up. But the “Like” button wasn’t always so well-liked—or even called “Like.” In a post on the Qand-A site Quora, Facebook engineering director Andrew Bosworth explains that “like” was deemed more universal than the company’s first choice, “awesome,” even though initial employee response was lukewarm. “We [had] become attached to ‘awesome’ and, comparatively, ‘like’ seem[ed] bland,” he says. The digital sentiment as we know it today made its official debut in February 2009. Since then, 1.3 trillion “Likes” have been recorded. A quite positive development, indeed.

Using firmer pavement could save us

Why is that? Something called pavement deflection, the buzzword of a recent study by MIT civil engineers. Translation: When you drive, your car makes a slight indentation in the road—about 1/100 of a millimeter—and, as such, is continually burning fuel to climb out of that groove. Researcher Franz-Josef Ulm compares it to walking on sand—as your feet sink, they create a valley from which you’ll have to emerge. According to the study,

stiffer roads, like ones paved with concrete or thicker layers of asphalt, would help reduce gas guzzling by about 3 percent, or more than $15 billion annually. “[It would] reduce the environmental footprint of our pavement systems for generations,” says Ulm, who hopes to achieve a more sustainable national infrastructure. Now that gives new meaning to street smarts.

“Challenge the culture of a highly competitive workplace by committing to considerate behaviors. When you value thoughtfulness and respect, it’s easy to act generously and cooperatively. Ping Fu, CEO of Geomagic

What’s your guiding principle? “Bend, not break is a lesson I learned from my Shanghai Papa, who raised me in China and told me about the ‘three friends of winter.’ He taught me the pine tree stays green in the bitter cold, the plum blossom shows its brilliance when it snows and no other thing will smile, and bamboo is flexible and won’t break. He told me, ‘Ping, you must be bamboo.’ During the oppressive years of the Cultural Revolution and throughout my entrepreneurial journey, I’ve found his story to be very comforting, because there were many cases where I needed to bend—but not break.” Ping Fu advises President Obama on entrepreneurship and innovation and co-founded the software firm Geomagic in 1997. Her new memoir, Bend, Not Break, contrasts her persecution in China with her rise in the American tech industry.

It was so effective that he finished his Ph.D. that year and then asked me to marry him. hy does dating often times seem so difficult and daunting? With all the dating websites and social networks out there, you’d think it would be easier than ever for singles to meet someone special. But that’s not the case. Meeting the right people seems harder than ever. To get the latest on real-time dating trends, we caught up with Melissa Brown, one of the many dating experts at It’s Just Lunch.

Q: so what does today’s dating scene look like?

A: Dating today is an interesting paradox: we’re more connected than ever through social media and online networking, yet we’re also more disconnected than ever. Today’s technology makes communication faster, but I’m not sure it’s better. You can’t make a genuine connection with someone by texting, emailing or friending. When you meet someone in person and share a meal together, you see how that person interacts with you and the people around you. You observe their body language and how they carry themselves. That’s where the true chemistry happens: face-to-face, one on one. At It’s Just Lunch, our focus is to get people out from behind their computers and out making connections with real people.

A: I hear the same thing over and over: “it was like a second job spending all that time looking over online profiles trying to find someone who could be a match”. It just takes all the fun out of dating. Most singles don’t have a problem finding dates, but they can’t find “good” dates. After a round of bad matches and a busy schedule, it’s easy for one to feel like giving up on dating all together.

ike most little boys, my athletic career began at age 5. I stood on a shaded spot in our backyard, placed a tethered t-ball atop its stand, gripped my new bat, and swung with all my might. I made contact—with the tee, not the ball. The day my athletic career began is also the day it ended, and with it went a piece of my pride. So, 25 years later, I’m giving sports a second chance. On the far corner of Southern Methodist University’s dew-soaked practice field, I watch a sea of football players cycle through fast-paced morning drills. A week earlier I’d called Frank Gansz Jr., SMU’s special-teams coach, to ask a favor. To reverse decades of self-doubt, I told him, “I need to learn to kick a field goal.”

The veteran coach didn’t blink. “We’ll teach you in 20 minutes,” he declared. “If you don’t put it through the goal post, we’ll move you in a little closer. If you still don’t make it—well, that’s what you’ll have to write about.” When the whistle blows at 8:30, practice is over for most of the guys. But it’s just starting for this rookie. Gansz leads me inside the school’s 32,000-seat stadium. He and I have different ideas of what lesson means. I’m ready for a demonstration, a step-by-step guide. But Gansz insists there’s not much to it: Place the ball, with its laces out, under a metal holder; take two paces back and two to the left; in one sweeping motion, wallop the thing with the top of your foot. That’s just what I do, and I kick the stuffing out of the metal. The ball wobbles away. My foot throbs. “Well, it’s your first time,” says Gansz. So I give it another go. Two

steps back, two to the side, whomp. The ball takes flight this time, but I’ve hooked it far left and nowhere near my target. “Well, you aren’t wearing cleats,” Gansz consoles. Another kick, another dud. By now, the once confident coach has blamed my shoes, my blue jeans, and the wind. (For the record, I don’t sense even the slightest breeze.) We both know this exercise isn’t about unlocking the secrets of field-goal kicking so much as it is finding the confidence to put what I’ve learned to use. By attempt No. 6, I just want to spare Gansz the trouble of coming up with another generous excuse for my failure. Two steps back, two to the side, kick. It’s good! My mentor cheers as years of self-doubt sail through the uprights. Gansz gave me more than a football lesson that day. Like every good coach, he taught me to quit living life on the sidelines and to start living it on the field.

fitness tricks for you Shape your future with these expert tips.

1

“If lack of time is your excuse for not working out, try high-intensity interval training, or HIIT. Run, bike, or swim intensely for one minute, then go easy for one minute. Studies show that in 20 minutes, you can gain the same health, fitness, and weight-loss benefits as 90 minutes of less intense exercise.” —Gretchen Reynolds, The New York Times “Phys Ed” columnist and author of The First 20 Minutes: Surprising Science Reveals How We Can Exercise Better, Train Smarter, Live Longer

2

“Fitness is not about how fabulous you look in a swimsuit for one week of the year; it’s about your average health over a lifetime. So take a break! Going into a workout regimen knowing that you’re going to take it easy for two weeks after three months of hard work is much better than getting so burned out that you walk away from it for two years.” —Andrew Wolf, exercise physiologist, Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona

3

“People are obsessed with protein bars, but oftentimes they’re heavily processed with sugar and mystery ingredients. For a healthier, equally portable option, pack your own snack. Try a low-carb tortilla wrap with veggies and hummus or turkey, or 30 pistachios and a Mini Babybel Light. These are great on the go, have fewer than 150 calories, and will give you a quick energy boost.” —Rachel Beller, registered dietitian and author of Eat to Lose, Eat to Win

I’M HAVING A BABY GIRL! THE GOAL? LEARN TO SEW.

T

hink of the perks! The savings on clothing. The ability to tailor any garment like a pro. The freedom to design my own wardrobe. I’m expecting my first bambina in March, and the urge to learn how to sew has suddenly gained even greater significance. Step 1: Hit Hobby Lobby, where I pick out a pattern for an adorable onesie, marked (theoretically) “easy.” Step 2: Call a dear friend who is a mother and a craft wiz, promise refreshments in return for her help, and hold my breath. Thankfully, she agrees. When I first dreamed of exploring my inner Martha Stewart, I had no idea how tricky it would be. There are uncommon vocabulary words, secret tricks, odd supplies,

impossibly tiny folds, and curved seams. The notion that I would be able to figure out the pattern? Fuhgettaboutit. I was certain I’d emerge from the night with the most beautiful onesie for my little girl, but when we were two hours in and still working on the first seam I accepted the inevitable: wandering stitches and one puckered sleeve. Asymmetry is all the rage, right? She’ll pull it off fine. What I learned from diving into this project applies perfectly to motherhood, I think. I may have lofty expectations of what a divine little lady my baby will be, and how she’ll one day end global warming and find a natural cure for cancer. But no matter who she is or how she shapes the fabric of her life, I will love her all the same.

FOR ME, IT’S GO-GO-GO THE GOAL? OMmmmmMMMM.

I

don’t look forward to Saturdays on the couch. In fact, I fear them. Rare is the weekend (or weekday) that I don’t have a social outing arranged or a to-do list to take on. But fueled by a curiosity about whether I could ever be content in solitude, I found myself in suburban Dallas, in the middle of a work day, at the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Meditation Center, where Sister Ranjan Inamdar guides me through a one-on-one lesson in cloistered inner-tainment. The following morning, a Saturday, I settle into the lounge chair on my back porch, close my eyes, and repeat the words I am a light, I am a peaceful soul in my head, just

as Sister Ranjan had instructed. When they come out, they are to the tune of the Simon & Garfunkel lyric “I am a rock, I am an island.” I know this is not what she had intended, but it is a start, and it makes me smile. While my husband busily runs the errands I typically tend to, I shift my quiet focus and read 100 pages of a new novel. As the hours pass and I stick to doing next to nothing, my restlessness—usually so inescapable— begins to wear off. By the end of the day, I have come to deeply appreciate my kingdom of quietude. I’m still the busybody I always was. But on some mornings, when I remind myself that it’s good for me, I sit in the lotus position and repeat those words to myself: I am a light, I am a peaceful soul. More often than not, my 75-pound mutt, Scout, plops onto my lap. He’s happy for my undivided attention. And I’ve finally found the thing to keep me grounded. january 2013 spirit

I

’d love to tell you that, at the age of 26, I have overcome the food phobias of my youth, but I have not. My adult diet is made up of two food groups: chicken and tacos. Vegetables? Blech. Pork? Meh. Despite growing up on the East Coast, I loathe seafood, with the exception of shrimp—if it’s peeled. I tried my first steak at 19; my first piece of bacon at 22. I don’t take risks. I don’t branch out. And I’ve been fine with that. My boyfriend and exasperated dinner companion, Thomas, is not so fine with that. In an effort to step into the role of omnivorous adult— and allow Thomas the pleasure of eating at a seafood place more than once a year—I promised to look my fears in the mouth and open wide. I was terrified. It doesn’t take long to determine which fishy delicacy would test my will and prove the hardest to

swallow. The mere thought of a raw oyster’s slimy consistency causes me to flush and my stomach to turn. Still, I make a date for Thomas and myself at Boulevardier, a newly opened French bistro in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood that is winning acclaim for its well-appointed raw bar. Chris Rubel, the restaurant’s chief shucker and our host for the evening, flashes a knowing smile as we pull up barstools in front of him. He is expecting us, and after brief introductions he goes to work, skillfully prying and popping each specimen to create an artful array of about a dozen half shells. Dinner is served. Cautiously, I raise the first oyster, a Gulf varietal, to my lips and proceed to stare it down. You can do this, I tell myself. Don’t embarrass yourself. Perhaps I already have by burying that first mollusk between a saltine and a mountain of cocktail sauce. Chris offers encouragement: “Give it a couple

chews to get the texture, then let it ride on back.” And ride on back it does. To my astonishment, I don’t gag. Then again, all I really taste is the salty cracker and the cocktail sauce. Hello, false confidence! Feeling like a pro, I grab another and throw it back, sans accoutrements, per Chris’ suggestion. The texture is as expected—firm yet gooey— but the taste is an unwelcome surprise. Have I just ingested a mouthful of seawater and the grit of the ocean floor with it? Only afterward am I informed of a few simple truths: 1. Oysters taste like where they come from. So that hint of high tide? Totally legit. 2. They’re alive up to the very moment that you eat them. Funny, I didn’t hear any screaming. 3. No one eats Gulf oysters straight. No one. As we polish off the plate, I look at Thomas, and a Cheshire grin crosses his face. Half proud, half nauseated, but entirely on my way to a brave new world, I smile back—and drain my champagne.

“To avoid eye irritation, chop onions near an open flame. The heat will burn off the gaseous sulfur compounds that onions release into the air. A gas burner works best. If you don’t have one, light a candle near your chopping board instead.” —Martha Stewart, homemaker extraordinaire

2

“Make your own butter spread by using a blender to combine two sticks of softened salted butter with ½ cup of canola or extra-light olive oil. This all-natural blend tastes like butter but is lower in saturated fats and higher in hearthealthy monounsaturated fats. And, best of all, it’s spreadable straight out of the fridge.” —Monica Reinagel, host of the Nutrition Diva podcast on QuickandDirtyTips.com

“When using a charcoal grill, bank two-thirds of the hot coals in a thick layer on one side and rake the rest evenly on the other side. This creates two heat zones. good ideas go, this one has some serious drive. Even after four months, 14,889 miles, scorching heat in Las Vegas, “low fuel” warnings in the Rockies, parking nightmares in New York City, and awkward stares in rural Washington, the SparkTruck cruises into Los Angeles like Mister Softee on the first day of summer. Only this Mister Softee is packing laser beams instead of ice creams and has multiple graduate degrees from Stanford University. ¶ Imagine this: One clunky truck, two 3-D printers, a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter, colored pencils, popsicle sticks, pom-poms, a clay oven, and a team of fresh-from-grad-school idealists aiming to change the world one tinkering child at a time. That’s what’s behind the SparkTruck revolution. Like a bookmobile for gadget geeks or a food truck that feeds young minds, SparkTruck is an “education build-mobile,” a high-octane, low-MPG classroom-on-wheels loaded with absurdly cool DIY tools and a message to kids that they are more than the sum of their standardized-test scores. ¶ At a time when school budgets are tighter than 35 students crammed into a classroom built for 18, the SparkTruck is all about the extras—extra time for

hands-on learning, extra attention from enthusiastic young educators, and extra credit for thinking outside the No. 2 pencil grid—delivered curbside in a 19-foot 2003 Ford Utilimaster with the aerodynamics of a galloping refrigerator. The SparkTruck “eats gas, it’s noisy, it rattles like crazy, it doesn’t have a cup holder, and the A/C is awful,” Eugene Korsunskiy, 27, shouts from behind the steering wheel as he negotiates L.A.’s stark downtown streets. “But it’s getting us around.” That’s an understatement. Four days from now, when SparkTruck wraps up its inaugural four-month road trip across America, it will have hit 73 locations in 33 states, reaching 2,697 students. What started as the thesis project of a group of eight grad students from the Institute of Design at Stanford (aka “d.School”) has grown into a movement to tap the “maker gene” in students nationwide. By inspiring more young creatives, the SparkTruckers hope to bring con-

7

fidence back to classrooms bogged down by curriculum requirements and testing mania. “When kids are successful in school, that’s great, but we’re interested in seeing kids fail,” Korsunskiy says. He looks a little like Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg, but he’s not joking. He points to a pile of doodles—kid-drawn inspirations for 1,001 SparkTruck projects—as evidence. “What we’re doing is creating a prototyping mind-set. You try something, you fail at something, you keep trying. We want kids to know it’s okay to make mistakes along the way.” The key demographic for SparkTruck is the fourth to seventh grade range, a critical population, as they see it. “Younger students are great at doing crafts—they’re naturals—but then they get mired in test anxiety and standardization,” says Jason Chua, 24, who has degrees in engineering and product marketing and a brain for all kinds of curious facts (as in, “the fully-loaded Sparkjanuary 2013 spirit

What can you, and you, and you do to actually improve the world?” One little boy cautiously raises his hand. “Plant trees?” he says. “Plant trees! Excellent! Who else?” Korsunskiy is exuberant, and it’s catchy. Suddenly, it’s an idea-palooza. Turn off lights! Use less water! Hug a puppy! Recycle! At the word “recycle,” Korsunskiy takes a Sharpie to a sketchpad and draws the familiar arrow-toarrow-to-arrow triangle that represents the concept. “This is called a logo,” he says. “It happens to be a logo that makes the world a better place. Now it’s your turn to make a logo to represent your good idea.” Again, the kids faces go slack. Again, Korsunskiy hangs in. “Did I mention you get to design your logos on iPads?”

master.com, the United States has dropped from first to 19th place in high school graduation rates. From first to 17th in science literacy. First to 14th in reading. First to 25th in math. And that’s in a country that spends more on education (4.5 percent of the U.S. GDP, according to worldbank.org) than almost any other. It is naïve to think a small band of twentysomethings in red T-shirts can fix the problem by showing kids how to make lasercut rubber stamps or tiny watchbattery robots. But it is a start. “SparkTruck gets the ball rolling as far as making innovation happen,” says Donna Salo. She runs an after-school science consultancy called S.L.I.M.E. (Science Launches Imagination Motivation Excitement) and has the distinction of living in the smallest town SparkTruck visited: East Long Meadow, Massachusetts, population 16,000. Salo was so motivated by the idea of bringing “a cool West-Coast innovation funmobile” to town that she organized an entire community science fair around the visit. She only had a week to pull it together, but when the SparkTruck arrived at Birchland Park Middle School in October, Salo was waiting with 220 kids, 75 parents, and 16 exhibits, including a riding hovercraft, bomb-detecting robots, bridges built from pennies, and one of those Van de Graaff static electricity generators that makes your hair stand up like Albert Einstein’s. “We used to think it was the role of the school system alone to stimulate our kids and introduce fresh ideas,” Salo says. “Today, innovation comes as much from outside as it does from within. The model is really SparkTruck itself. They got an idea, they went after it, and they carried it through to fruition.

F1_sparky_kdm.indd 65

11/30/12 2:08 PM

We can’t wait for ideas to just happen to us anymore.” SparkTruck began as an idea for bringing hands-on learning to schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. But a moveable classroom wasn’t the Stanford grads’ first entrepreneurial impulse. Initially, they considered kitschier ventures, like a nap truck for overwhelmed Silicon Valley

“Sometimes all you need is someone to show you something new, and it changes everything,” says officer Calderon. techies and a roving garage-sale truck. But sparking young minds was a need too great to resist. After a Kickstarter campaign blew the tail off the piggy bank—

the d.School students raised an impressive $31,275—they opted to take the show cross-country. The project tapped the spirit of the times, riding the handmade coattails of the so-called maker movement, a growing subculture of glue-gunning, robot-loving, welder-mask-wearing do-ityourselfers. These are the groovy young knitters, felters, and metalworkers who’ve turned companies like the craft commerce website Etsy into multi-million-dollar behemoths. “It’s weird, but I think the more technology we have, the more we crave creating things with our hands and learning to create in real and tangible ways,” Chua says. He’s right about that craving. There’s a reason 13 million people have clicked on Sir Ken Robinson’s online TED Talk about how schools are killing creativity. Robinson has called for a radical rethink of how we teach kids. Nurturing curiosity is essential. As Robinson puts it in his oftquoted talk, “Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.” There’s a problem, though, he says: “Many highly talented, brilliant, creative people think they’re not—because the thing they were good at in school wasn’t valued, or was actually stigmatized.” Robinson and his argument that children “get educated out of creativity” somewhere between grade school and junior high was a big inspiration for the SparkTruckers. Likewise, they looked to education innovators like Khan Academy founder Salman Khan, whose free online library

of 10-minute math and science videos has been viewed by more than 200 million people. Other inspirations included TEDYouth and TEDEd, education-oriented offshoots of the Technology Entertainment and Design confab where the focus is on presenting “ideas worth spreading.” A larger reform is in the works, too. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Coalition (STEM) is an alliance of more than 500 business, professional, and education organizations working to drive innovation in our modern global economy. With backing from companies like Microsoft and Time Warner Cable, it’s helping fasttrack extracurricular and afterschool programs that emphasize hands-on, inquiry-based learning. In other words, programs exactly like SparkTruck. Says Chua, “The more opportunities you give kids to build things and figure out solutions to problems, the more opportunities they’ll have to make a real difference in the larger world.” Does the SparkTruck method work? Stanford researcher Kathayoon Khalil thinks so. Khalil looked over SparkTruck data and concluded that the students who engaged in SparkTruck workshops are much more likely to identify themselves as “builders” than those who didn’t participate. Khalil also predicts that one or two out of 100 students will pursue a STEM-related major in college as a direct result of their SparkTruck experience.

Make Your Own VibroBot The Idea Build a simple robot using a vibrating pager motor and watch battery. When taped together and glued to a popsicle stick, the “Creature Mash VibroBot” shimmies along the surface of a table. on index cards and write letters to tell people about their idea. As world-changing projects go, this one’s simple and fast (the whole process takes around an hour and a half) but it’s a crash course in the elements of innovation: brainstorming, teamwork, prototyping, invention, building, and sharing. You can read the satisfaction on the children’s faces. As Officer Daniel Calderon, who oversees this P.A.L. program for the Newton Street Precinct, says, “Sometimes all you need is someone to show you something new, and it changes everything. Maybe it’s a subconscious thing, but I can tell that these kids—and most of them come from rough neighborhoods and families that are struggling—will walk away today going, ‘Wow! This stuff exists?’” Adds SparkTrucker Didi Erucman, “We’re not teaching as much as exposing kids to possibility. If you really want to make something happen, you can.” That can-do spirit lingers and spreads. At a SparkTruck visit in Nashville, the group sent their logo-stamped letters to the mayor’s office. The mayor then replied, thanking each and every kid for working to make a difference. In East Long Meadow, Donna Salo is planning an even bigger science fair next year, and she is looking for new ways to inspire students with cool tools and innovative ideas. “In a way, SparkTruck was just the beginning for us,” she says. “It’s part of a longer term project to get students engaged and excited and to make learning come alive.” As for SparkTruck itself, the next step is simply to keep the project rolling. The team is talking with Stanford and corporate sponsors about making SparkTruck an annual student project or even an educational franchise. “We’ve gotten requests from peo-

ple in Germany, Sweden, Japan, and Australia who want to do what we’re doing,” Chua says. Erucman, meanwhile, is finishing her documentary about the experience, and Korsunskiy is toying with the idea of passing the teaching reins to a new SparkTruck team so he can work with children, full time. “I hadn’t thought about teaching before, but

I’ve had a mind-set shift,” he says. “There’s nothing more exciting than getting the message across that, through sheer willpower and imagination, you can have a big impact on the world.” David Hochman is a Los Angelesbased writer whose work has appeared in Esquire, The New York Times, and Travel + Leisure.

Bugsy Siegel. Al Capone. Whitey Bulger. You’ve heard their names, but you may not realize the impact these mobsters had around the country—and particularly in Vegas. “The building of hotels and casinos by the Mob had a major influence on what Vegas is today,” says Jonathan Ullman, the executive director at The Mob Museum. Housed downtown in the city’s original post office (which later served as a federal courthouse), the year-old museum overflows with exhibits detailing how crime bosses rose to power. It’s also a treasure trove of storied objects, including the bullet-ridden wall from Al Capone’s St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. To truly immerse yourself in hooligan history, have a seat in the courtroom where ruffians like Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal—the inspiration for the film Casino—took the stand. Retail therapy is a sport here, and The Market LV is where savvy shopaholics flex their spending muscles. Located in Tivoli Village, an eight-block district about 11 miles northwest of the Strip, this loft-like shopping hub was completed at the end of last year. Fuel up at the juice bar in the first-floor marketplace, then make your way upstairs to 20 independently owned shops selling everything from artisan lollipops to puppy couture. (Don’t miss Artifact for funky jewelry, and B Sweet Candy Boutique for handmade cotton candy.) When you’re ready to drop, nab a stool at View Wine Bar & Kitchen, where musicians jam on piano and acoustic guitar. “The passion that shop owners have for their store is palpable,” says Andrea Young, owner of The Market LV. Which style of beer pairs well with seafood? What’s the proper vessel from which to sip an imperial stout? If these questions ale you, uncover their answers and more during a three-hour “Beer College” course at Public House, a gastropub inside The Venetian. Each session schools patrons on everything from how the stuff is made to its historical roots. The most popular student query: What beer goes best with dessert? “The simplest answer is the darker the better,” says Russell Gardner, an instructor and the first certified cicerone (the beer world’s equivalent to a sommelier) in Nevada. Keep that in mind, since dessert is part of the syllabus. Each class wraps with a three-course dinner. You’ll even take home a 64-ounce growler and an information-packed booklet—assurance that the experience stays with you even after the cold ones wear off. publichouselv.com

Work in Las Vegas

“Rock of Ages brings an energy that’s contagious, with people dancing and singing at the top of their lungs. There is no better place for an all-out ’80s party. To me, the greatest thing about Vegas is the escape—not only the escape we provide our audiences with, but the escape the city provides me with when I come off stage. I’ve never been able to disappear and hike with my dog with such ease. Most people wouldn’t associate Vegas with peacefulness, but that’s one thing that I really love about it.” —Mark Shunock “Lonny Barnett” Rock of Ages “There’s no other city in the world like Vegas. Forty million visitors come here with two main goals: to work or play. And even when you come to work, there’s still plenty of time to be entertained. Cirque du Soleil began in Vegas inside a pitched tent behind The Mirage in 1992 with the production of Nouvelle Experience, and the rest is history. We have people from more than 50 countries working for us, which brings an incredible diversity to the city. Your overall health begins and ends with the most basic of tenets: Get exercise daily.

Y

our overall health begins and ends with the most basic of tenets: Get exercise daily. Not only does regular physical activity help improve your overall health and fitness, it also reduces your risk for many chronic diseases. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, adults 18 to 64 years should do at least two hours and 30 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a moderate level. If you’re going the more vigorous route, the amount decreases to an hour and 15 minutes each week. Start slow and once you’ve got that down, make your workout a daily rou-

tine. Being active five or more hours each week can provide even more health benefits—but it doesn’t have to be all at once. Spreading aerobic activity out over at least three days a week is best, and don’t focus solely on cardio. It’s important to incorporate strengthening activities, like push-ups, sit-ups and lifting weights, at least two days a week. While five hours a week doesn’t sound too hard in theory, the aging process, coupled with the challenges of daily life, can often serve as an obstacle to achieving fitness goals. Just ask Gary Kehoe, chief executive officer of DreamBrands, formulators

of natural anti-aging solutions for men and women over 40. “I always thought when I turned 50 I’d be working less,” says Kehoe. “But with the economy the way it is I’m actually working more and traveling more, and I think there are a lot of men just like me who are just tired and fatigued.” Kehoe’s quest to refind his prime led to the development of Mdrive, a daily supplement for men age 40-plus looking to increase strength, stamina and overall vitality. The custom compounded blend of Mdrive’s powerful, highly concentrated herb and mushroom extracts support and increase healthy

Lung Cancer Patient

“My care team not only gave me a personalized treatment plan to fight my lung cancer. They gave me hope.” Kathy Houlihan will never forget the way she felt when she was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer: “I was terrified.” After conferring with friends, she decided to go to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America®(CTCA) website and explore treatment plans that combined supportive therapies and conventional medicine. “That was the first place that gave me any hope.” In a matter of days, Kathy’s care team of lung cancer experts started her on a treatment program designed specifically for her. It included TomoTherapy® (radiation to target her tumor while minimizing damage to healthy tissue) and chemotherapy. She also received nutritional counseling and naturopathic medicine to help ease her side effects. As her scans showed her tumor was shrinking and she was recovering, Kathy knew she made the right choice with CTCA. 13 years later, Kathy is singing with her church choir, learning to paint with water colors, and happier than ever that she chose CTCA. “I put my faith in CTCA completely. Because they had faith in me.” Read more about Kathy’s treatment and life after lung cancer at cancercenter.com/Kathy.

Tackle the next obstacle: those nagging injuries you’ve allowed to sideline you for years. Direct from the Doctor

Steven F. Hotze, M.D. “The New Year is a great opportunity to make a fresh start. While others are making resolutions such as going to the gym or eating better, you may be wishing that you felt like your younger self again, when you had the energy to tackle all the goals you wanted to achieve. Have you been told by your doctor that your blood work is normal even though you are experiencing symptoms of weight gain, fatigue STEVEN F. and brain fog? Maybe you HOTZE, M.D. have been told that your symptoms are all in your head or that it’s just a part of getting older? If this sounds familiar, then make a resolution to take charge of your health this year. True wealth is found in good health, and without it it’s difficult to enjoy your friends, family and your life. If your doctor isn’t giving you the answers you’re looking for, it may be time to find a new doctor. Once your vitality and desire to seize life are in full force, it’s time to tackle the next obstacle: those nagging injuries you’ve allowed to sideline you for years. According to the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 50 million Americans suffer from arthritis, including almost 300,000 children under age 18. U.S.based physician Dr. A.J. Farshchian is trying to eradicate those barriers with the The Center for Regenerative Medicine in Miami, Fla., which concentrates on helping arthritic and injured people get back to a functional level of life and their activities using non surgical techniques and cell therapy. The center’s expertise focuses on treatment and management of joint pain, particularly in the spine, knees, shoulder and other areas of damaged cartilage.

“More and more injured athletes are getting benefits from cell therapy,” says Dr. Farshchian, who is the medical director for the center. “During the healing process, the body rushes many cells and cell-types to the injected area. These cells allow the body to take advantage of the normal healing pathways at a greatly accelerated rate.” To see how orthopedic regenerative medicine can make a difference for you in the new year, visit arthritisusa.net. Of course, nagging injuries and arthritis aren’t the only barriers that can stand in the way of a new, healthy you. When left untreated, minor irritations can turn into major issues and prevent

Traditional treatments like wetting drops and ointments only treat the symptoms, leaving us to lead daily lives with a constant irritation. The central question is, why not take steps to address the root cause of dry eye instead of just treating the symptoms? Advanced technology continues to provide new and improved treatments for dry eye, including TearScience’s groundbreaking new

LipiFlow® treatment. The procedure, which is performed at an eye care professional’s office and takes about 30 minutes, uses precisely controlled heat and gentle pressure applied to the eyelids to liquefy and evacuate obstructed glands, allowing them to resume natural production of lipids needed for a healthy tear film. Success has been smashing, with 79 percent of patients reporting improvement in overall dry eye symptoms during clinical trials. LipiFlow stands poised to become the new standard of care for evaporative dry eye, meaning a convenient way to end your nagging suffering and one fewer obstacle on your path to good

In fact, mental health is integral to your overall quality of life because when we are free of depression, anxiety, excessive stress and worry, we are more able to live our lives to the fullest. Excessive anxiety and stress can contribute to physical problems in a very tangible way, including the incidence of heart disease, ulcers and colitis. They can also reduce the strength of the immune system, making people more vulnerable to conditions ranging

TIME TO SCORE

“Right at Home has exceeded our expectations on so many levels, including financially, I recently picked up a second market, simply because I’m in the game to win it. And it certainly is a win-win operation.”

With A Winning Team At The Top Of Their Game!

It’s time to play with pros at the top of their game – Right at Home®, where the average franchisee topline revenue is over $1 million annually. ‡1 No rookie in the financial world, Tom Bollum came out of retirement to join the Right at Home franchise, the industry leader of in-home health care, a championed pro in the rapid growth trillion-dollar healthcare industry. “My last venture was helping to build a company that sold for millions,” said Tom, a self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur. “But there’s only so much golf a guy can play. And at the end of the day, did I make a difference? Did I improve life?” It was time to make a difference, make a change, improve the quality of life for others, and in turn, he felt infinitely rewarded himself. After painstakingly researching the competitive senior homecare market, he found that Right at Home knew the drill, had the strategies, and made the plays, as the division leader, championed with a long-time record of wins.

“Hands down, Right at Home came out on top. I wanted to take advantage of a proven franchise with a game plan and playbook that executes success,” Tom said. “Mistakes are costly and Right at Home doesn’t let you to make someone else’s mistake twice.” Statistically, the Right at Home team offers the home-field advantage with decades of healthcare experience, over 250 operating franchise locations in five countries, and a 17% year-over-year revenue record during a recession. ‡2 “Right at Home has exceeded our expectations on so many levels, including financially,” Tom said. “I recently picked up a second market, simply because I’m in the game to win it. And it certainly is a win-win operation.” With a Right at Home Franchise, you provide care for people needing assistance, so they can remain in the privacy and comfort of their home with the dignity and independence they deserve. “You feel like you’re running with the ball and executing everything perfectly. And you don’t fumble because you care so much; it’s certainly rewarding,” Tom said.

“When we hire our in-home care professionals, my wife and I ask ourselves, ‘Would we want this person taking care of our parents?’ If that answer isn’t a resounding yes, then it’s a no go,” Tom said. The need to cover this substantial, underserved market continues to increase exponentially. There are over 78 million Baby Boomers today, growing at a rate of nearly 4 million every year! 3 What’s great for people wanting to get into this lucrative field is that healthcare experience isn’t necessary. Right at Home gives you the tools and shows you the plays, so you gain yardage into the end zone. “Right at Home has the franchisee’s best interest at heart so we can have our clients’ in ours,” Tom said. “These clients we help...they are our friends... our family. We’re all a team, a winning team.” If you want to be a MVP in other people’s lives as well as your own, it’s time to score a touchdown with Right at Home.

from the common cold to cancer. The relationship between the latter and one’s mental health is something Rev. Michael Langham, director of pastoral care at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s Southwestern Regional Medical Center in Tulsa, deals with on a daily basis. Langham’s pastoral care team is an integral part of every CTCA patient’s treatment program, providing spiritual support during treatment and beyond. “Eventually the physical body can heal, but it’s the psychological wounds that do not heal, and that’s where the damage comes in,” Langham says. “Those psychological wounds are mechanisms of our stress response, and scientific research shows that it slows down the immune system. For a cancer patient, a weakened immune system is their worst enemy. “That’s one of the reasons why

at CTCA, we focus on helping our patients through all types of stressors in their life, whether that is spiritual, mental, physical or emotional.” Langham also has advice for everyone, regardless of whether they have been afflicted by cancer: The ability to forgive is an essential component of good mental health. “The anger and hatred we harbor

because of what someone has done to hurt us is something that just continues to build. One negative interaction in our life continues to multiply and truly affect every area of our well-being. That unrelenting pull on our immune system makes us susceptible not only to cancer cells, but even the common flu bug.” Mental health also extends into the workplace, as many of us have learned the hard way. The idea that unhappiness at work bleeds into other parts of life has been well documented, so perhaps the new year is your chance to become satisfied at work, too. For many people, that can mean finally listening to the nagging voice in their head. “Most of the folks we talk to tell us that they’ve always wanted to own their own business, but they just kept putting it off,” says Eric Little, senior vice president of franchise development for Right at Home, an in-home care company based in Omaha, Neb. “Then, once they finally take the calculated leap of faith and open it, they tell us that the only thing they would do differently is to open the business much sooner. The key message is to take control of your life and enjoy the health benefits of pursuing your passion, and do it sooner rather than later.” There are plenty of franchise opportunities out there just waiting to be seized—in fact, according to the International Franchise Association there are more than 1,100. Remember that mental health is just as important as physical. more information on how to find the, franchise right for you, visit franchise.org. Of course, a company like Right at Home isn’t just making people happier through the benefits of franchising. The business itself is based around one of the central tenets of emotional health: being willing to ask for help. With more than 44 million Americans currently providing care for an ailing loved one at home, more people than ever before are feeling the negative impacts to health and wellness that caregivers and their immediate families so often suffer. In fact, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has reported that family caregivers suffer from depression twice as often as non caregivers. The good news is that improving the situation of you and your loved one is often within your own control. Right at Home is one of several companies that offer in-home caregiving services for almost any family and practically any situation. Most importantly, Right at Home preserves the ability for your loved one to enjoy a healthy life in the comfort of a familiar environment while granting you some muchneeded relief from the daily strain of being an adult caregiver. Another caregiving alternative is Home Care Assistance. The company’s services are distinguished by the caliber of their caregivers, the responsiveness of their staff and a well-honed expertise in live-in care. Home Care’s positive, balanced approach to aging centers on the evolving needs of older adults—but of course, a positive, balanced approach is something we could all use a little more of in the new year. When it comes to your qual-

ity of life, the ultimate message to remember is that, in order to truly become a “new you,” you must make lasting changes for the permanent benefit of your physical and mental

health. Your overall health is vitally important in every way, and improving it can mean that the new you is a permanent change you are able to enjoy for a very, very long time.

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right). This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past twelve years.

There’s a new sort of headline entertainment in Branson. Grab your fishing tackle for the Masters Trout Championship at Lake Taneycomo, which is hailed as one of the top trout fisheries in the Midwest. Something magical happens as temperatures drop each year: The lake’s waters “turn over,” creating an oxygen-rich environment that leads to happy trout— and even happier fishermen. For more than three decades, pairs of anglers have taken to the water to compete for cash prizes and oh-soimportant bragging rights in two catch-and-release tournaments (January 12 and February 23). Even if you don’t speak the language of “midge hatches” and “marabou jigs,” there’s a free meal for entrants and spectators alike. he crown jewel of Scottsdale is the 120,000-square-mile Sonoran Desert, a sanctuary of untamed wilderness dotted with towering saguaro cacti and exotic wildlife. A veritable playground for the outdoor enthusiast, the Sonoran Desert finds visitors galloping on horseback alongside real, honestto-goodness cowboys one moment and digging chalky fingers into sheer rock faces the next. Perhaps the most accessible way to experience the desert’s recreational offerings is through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, with almost 30,000 pristine acres ripe for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and horseback riding. Choose your own adventure, or let a guide do it for you—Scottsdale is brimming with local experts and professional guide companies who can help you plan and execute adventures ranging from serene to extreme (see list of companies later in this article). Eventually, the preserve, which stretches across the northern and eastern edges of the city, will encompass more than 34,000 acres of permanently protected desert, keeping the area ripe for enjoyment by locals and visitors alike for many years to come. The Preserve also encompasses the McDowell Mountains, whose craggy slopes continue to give geologists clues as to how the region formed and evolved. The range is a mecca for hard-core climbers and hikers, who no doubt are enjoying the recently opened Tom’s Thumb Trailhead with its increased access to the northern reaches of the range. Luxurious amenities, fine dining, an award-winning spa and convenient access to Scottsdale’s glamorous shopping districts, entertainment and nightlife offer a picturesque retreat from roughing it. Montelucia is known for its one-of-a-kind Joya Spa, the first to infuse signature products and treatments with essences or energies of plants and gemstones. Inspired by the deserts of Morocco, the spa is the quintessential space to excite the senses and calm the heart after an exhausting day exploring the desert. And perhaps even more rewarding

The largest event of its kind in the world, the show is a must-see Scottsdale signature event that will draw more than 2,500 of the world’s finest Arabian horses to compete for the coveted title of “Scottsdale Champion.” The event attracts thousands of spectators to its location at WestWorld, where the thrilling competition is buoyed by gala parties, educational seminars, an international cuisine court and more than 300 vendor booths offering everything from lavish jewelry to clothing and works of art. For more information on the show, visit scottsdaleshow.com.

Luckily, deciding to explore the more urban side of Scottsdale doesn’t mean you have to give up outdoor recreation completely. The city’s green side is on full display along the grass-lined Indian Bend Wash, an interconnected string of four urban parks also known as the Greenbelt. Featuring lighted walking and recreation paths, fishing ponds, athletic fields, tennis courts and a skate park, the popular 7.5mile urban playground welcomes walkers, joggers, recreational and hardcore athletes and cyclists alike. No matter what kind of adventure you choose in Scottsdale, you’re sure to leave with a lightness of spirit and an appreciation for the great outdoors. Whether you expe-

WiFi Up High

Southwest keeps you connected.

Southwest Proudly Presents… Inflight Entertainment! If you’re sitting onboard one of our more than 400 WiFi-enabled airplanes, you might not realize you’re within a few clicks of cuttingedge inflight entertainment in the form of live TV and Internet access! Southwest evaluated seatback entertainment options for many years. We wanted to give Customers options while onboard, but the cost and complexity weren’t well-suited to Southwest’s lean-and-mean business model. When inflight WiFi emerged, it presented an opportunity to offer our Customers a way to stay productive and entertained without the addition of heavy equipment or costly maintenance to each aircraft. We partnered with Row 44, an inflight entertainment company, in spring 2010 and have been gradually installing the service on our fleet of Boeing 737-700s and -800s. Today, Southwest has the largest satellite-based inflight WiFi fleet in the world and is the only airline to offer live TV wirelessly. To experience the future of inflight entertainment, simply connect to the Southwest WiFi hotspot and launch your Web browser. From there you can track the progress of your flight, visit southwest.com, or play sudoku at no charge. For a low price, you are able to access the Web, where you can keep your

friends updated on your travels by posting on Facebook, or even work a bit (we won’t tell). And for those looking for more, Southwest made history last year as the first airline to offer wireless, live television. Our TV lineup currently features eight news and sports channels with plans to expand in the near future. We also offer NFL RedZone on Sunday afternoons for a separate price, so our football fans can stay current on all the action inside the 20-yard line. Our inflight entertainment doesn’t stop there. As part of our TV package, we have a selection of episodes from popular shows, past and present. If you’re more of a film buff, you can purchase a movie to keep you or your little one entertained while in the air. Once again, Southwest is leading the way by introducing smart, simple, and affordable ways to improve your journey. We’re very excited about our inflight entertainment options and hope you are too! For more information about WiFi, TV, and movies, see the WiFi FAQ in the back of this magazine, or, if you’re on a WiFi plane, get out your device and connect to Southwest’s Inflight Entertainment Portal to discover everything this exciting new product has to offer. —Angela Vargo

Community Outreach

Key Contacts

These Leaders are charged with building relationships in the communities that Southwest serves. At Southwest Airlines, we believe in the importance of fostering relationships at many different levels—with our Southwest Coworkers, with our Customers, and within our communities. As our very own President Emeritus, Colleen Barrett, once told me, “It’s all about relationships.” As a Key Contact for Southwest, I have the privilege of establishing relationships on behalf of the airline—and I LUV it! Key Contacts are Southwest Leaders tasked with building and maintaining relationships within the communities we serve. By empowering Employees to become involved and make connections in their local communities, Southwest has an opportunity to know the community’s pulse and have an increased awareness of important issues unique to that city. A Southwest Employee for 20 years, I have spent half of my career with the airline as a Key Contact. The experience has been very rewarding and enjoyable, and this opportunity affords me a chance to indulge my strong interest in community and government. I am honored to represent a Company of such integrity that holds service to others as a Core Value. Through my interactions with community leaders, elected officials, opinion leaders, and decision makers in my community, I am able to provide a voice for Southwest Airlines. I am able to learn what opportunities or challenges my community is facing and how Southwest can get involved. As former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill once said, “All politics is local.” Through our Key Contact Program, the bipartisan relationships that develop over time with community, state, and national leaders allow for the devel-

opment of mutual trust and respect. When you visit the Capitol in Washington, D.C., and your congresswoman steps out of a committee meeting to meet with your delegation from Southwest Airlines, you know it’s not only about the Company you represent—it’s also about the relationship you’ve developed with her. Maybe she recalled the holiday greetings with handwritten notes and, perhaps, a family photo enclosed. You were excited when she, in turn, responded with her own. Our Key Contact Program continues to assist in facilitating and nurturing these important, mutually beneficial relationships, which span from City Hall to Capitol Hill. And I’m grateful to be a part of it! —Patrice P. Dell Albuquerque Center Support Leader

AS A SERVICE AND CONVENIENCE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS, SOUTHWEST AIRLINES IS IMPLEMENTING A WIRELESS NETWORK ACROSS OUR FLEET.

WHAT IS IT? A wireless satellite–based network that allows you to connect to the Internet thousands of feet in the air!

WHEN CAN I USE IT? A Flight Attendant will alert you if the wireless network is available on your aircraft. As soon as the Flight Attendant says it is safe to turn on approved electronic devices, you are welcome to connect. The Flight Attendant will also announce when it is time to turn off and stow your device before landing. The network will be unavailable at that time.

WHAT KIND OF DEVICE DO I NEED? All you need is a WiFi-enabled device (802.11a/b/g or n) with an Internet browser. Please note that cellular devices without a WiFi component will not work with this system, and their use is restricted to game or airplane mode per current regulations.

HOW DO I CONNECT? Every device is different, but here are the basic steps: 1. Once the Flight Attendant has announced that it is safe to use approved portable electronics, turn on your WiFi-enabled device and set to airplane mode (if applicable). 2. View available wireless networks, select “Southwest WiFi,” and connect. 3. Launch your Internet browser for immediate access to the Southwest Airlines Hotspot portal and all it has to offer. 4. To purchase WiFi, click “Get Connected” and enter the requested information. 5. Enjoy surfing the web at 30,000 feet!

WHAT CAN I DO ON IT? The Southwest Airlines WiFi features a free entertainment portal that houses limited content including a flight tracker, shopping, games, and all that southwest.com has to offer at no charge to you! On our network, you can do just about anything you can do at work or at home. Due to the shared environment, we prohibit the use of voice applications (VoIP) and attempt to filter inappropriate content. Please note the speed for viewing and downloading high-bandwidth content, such as high-quality streaming media or large-file downloads will vary.

IS IT SECURE? The onboard wireless connection is similar to a WiFi service at a coffee shop, library, hotel, or airport. You should exercise the same precautions you would at one of these public locations.

TROUBLE CONNECTING? We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. First, you should have confirmed the aircraft and your device was indeed WiFi enabled, then try disconnecting and connecting again. If your problems connecting persist, we advise contacting your device manufacturer or your company’s network administrator for continued support. Southwest takes great pride in giving you low fares and a comfortable flight, but we are unable to provide technical support. Please call 1-800-I-FLY-SWA (800-435-9792) to report any problems you may have encountered with your WiFi service.

The “If” List

Laura Dern, if you could give your 10-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be? Keep your eyes on your own paper. If you could take back one sentence you’ve ever spoken, what would it be? “Why not?” If a picture paints a thousand words, what are you doing in that picture? Holding my face like in Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” If you could rid yourself of one deeply personal fear, what would it be? I’m too scared to answer. If you had a time machine, where would you go? Paris, in the late 1920s

Laura Dern stars in HBO’s Enlightened. Season 1 is available on DVD/Blu-ray on January 8.

If you could cast someone to play you in a movie, who would it be? Will Ferrell If you were to pick what is inscribed on your gravestone, what would it be? “It’s awesome!”

Photography By © Jack Guy/Corbis Outline

If you could ask any person one question that they had to answer, who and what would you ask? I would ask Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Do you still have faith in man?”

What About You? If you could be a character in any book, who would you be and why? Submit your answer at spiritmag.com/if. Our favorite responses will be published in an upcoming issue of Spirit. 132 spirit january 2013
