I had the honor of receiving several scholarships as a student at Southwestern Adventist University. Because the University encourages friendship between the donors and recipients, I was able to get to know some of the donors. The Harder family especially took an interest in me and became part of my support system.

A Surprise Return on Investment

After graduation I kept in touch with the Harders and they always let me know they were praying for me. I took a teaching position at North Dallas Adventist Academy. There was a little boy in my classroom with the last name Harder and I realized he might be related to my scholarship donors. I was delighted to discover it was their grandson in my classroom. What a privilege! Because of their generous support, I am now teaching their very sweet grandson and giving back to the community to the best of my ability. I can’t thank them enough for believing in me. 4

Major Gift to Support the Department of Biology Southwestern Adventist University received a $500,000 gift for the Department of Biological Sciences. The gift comes from an anonymous donor of the University and will provide the department with an additional full-time faculty member for the next four years. The remaining part of the gift will support equipment needs in the areas of mathematics and science. “This gift will enhance our academics in a substantial way, both in terms of our staff and equipment that our students can use,” says Dr. Arthur Schwarz, department chair. “We are thankful for friends and alumni who believe in what we’re doing and show support. A gift like this has such an impact on our students and not just academically. Such tangible support encourages them in their endeavors.” Professor Peter McHenry instructs students during biology lab.19

Pinnacle Bank Supports Capital Campaign Pinnacle Bank gifted Southwestern Adventist University with $100,000 towards the new nursing building during a press conference this fall. The bank first opened its doors in 1970 in the city of Keene, about 30 miles south of Fort Worth. Pinnacle Bank has a long history of supporting the community, which makes this project perfect for their involvement. Last year, 54% of Southwestern nursing students were from Johnson County. The program is expanding quickly. With the building of the new home for the nursing program, space will be provided for community wellness activities. These plans are part of the University’s five-year community engagement plan.

36

Pinnacle Bank Regional Presidents Ronnie Korb and Tim Whitlock present the check to Dr. Ken Shaw.

You Are Instrumental in My Success A STUDENT’S OPEN LETTER The thing I love about Southwestern Adventist University is that I’m surrounded by people who are willing to do whatever it takes to help me be successful. That’s an amazing feeling when it’s your professors and staff. I have received multiple scholarships that enabled me to attend Southwestern and that means I have a lot of support from the University’s alumni and friends too. I have a few extra challenges than most students. I have cerebral palsy. Because of the poor fine motor control in my hands, I did not learn how to tie my shoes until I was 14 years old. The only reason that I was able to learn to tie my shoes is because my parents and my teachers did not stop trying to teach me.

38

While I am now able to tie my shoes every morning, I still have to figure out ways to stay up to speed in class. I have other physical challenges every day, but I do not let that stop me from accomplishing my goals. Southwestern Adventist University staff have gone above and beyond to make sure that I get whatever help I need. They are also always willing to help me outside of class time. I truly feel that Southwestern Adventist University is one of the greatest schools out there because of their willingness to help students become successful. I attended other schools and I didn’t find what I needed until I came here. You have been instrumental in making this University experience a reality for all sorts of students. I want to thank you for making this educational opportunity possible for me

I can’t adequately put into words how much I love this school and my teachers. I cannot wait to graduate and get a job so that I too can give back to this institution that has helped me so much. Jacob Carvalho, Senior Accounting Major

Alumni Design and Fundraise For New Disc Golf Course It’s pretty exciting when alumni take it upon themselves to completely create and fundraise for a project that will benefit their alma mater and the local community. That’s exactly happened at Southwestern Adventist University, where a new disc golf course is now in place. The new course winds through the trees and around the bed of water, known affectionately as the Duck Pond, in Southwestern’s Rex E. Callicott Student Park. Alumni Jarrett Morgan ’06, Jeremy Short ’05, and friend Taylor Cole, along with some additional alumni, friends, and Southwestern staff, worked hard to pull the course design and fundraising together. Sean Amos, Southwestern’s campus service director, especially put a lot of time working the tractor to put in the tee pads and goals. Thanks to this group, community members, alumni, and local businesses sponsored different parts of the course.

“Disc golf was first introduced to me by a fellow alumnus, Eric Crews, 10 years ago,” explains Morgan. “As a college student the idea of playing golf for free was awesome! I quickly fell in love with one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. and kept sharing the game. So now I want to pay it forward to current and future students who can enjoy the beauty and fun of a disc golf course on the hills of Callicott Park. I look forward to seeing students engaging in intramurals, tournaments, and classes at our new course.” The University hosted its first tournament on the course during Homecoming 2015. Community members, alumni, students, and even some pro players joined the tournament. Morgan, who teaches for the Keene Independent School District, also now teaches a class on disc golf for the University.

Roberta Aguilar, Senior Education Major

A Leap of Faith Rewarded STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Roberta grew up as a second generation Adventist. Surrounded by peers seeking pleasure from parties, alcohol, and drugs, Roberta’s only escape was her love of soccer. Christ-centered education was an option she didn’t know about while attending inner-city schools. After graduating from high school, Roberta began attending a local college fully paid for by a soccer scholarship. With only a couple weeks left before the start of her junior year she heard about Southwestern Adventist University from a pastor who visited her church. He encouraged Roberta to visit Southwestern. Roberta knew she craved more from her education, but as a first-generation college student her family worried about the cost, transferring her credits, and the soon approaching school year.

Deciding to take a leap of faith, Roberta drove to our campus - arriving at the Mizpah Gate. Pastor Russ Laughlin, a campus administrator, saw her wandering and introduced himself. Before she knew it, Roberta was taken on a campus tour meeting with the enrollment office and an advisor in the education department who ended the visit with prayer. Roberta says, “I was stunned! Never in my life had a teacher offered to pray with me. That’s when I knew I was supposed to be here”.

and her church has witnessed the impact of Adventist education. Even after her first walk through campus, Roberta feels that the Holy Spirit continues to walk with her. Support from donors like you make it possible for many students like Roberta to learn about knowledge, faith, and service in a Christ-centered environment.

God answered Roberta’s prayers, removing all obstacles. Now in her senior year at Southwestern as an Elementary Education major, Roberta is eager to begin student teaching at a local Adventist elementary school. Because of her experience, Roberta’s nieces are now attending their local Adventist elementary school
