Each year Mr. Robert Turnbull and the Associates of Turnbull Nursery, graciously invite a select group of seniors to accompany Mr. Turnbull and Mrs. Lisa Brosnick, teacher at the North Collins Jr.-Sr. High School, on an exciting weekend trip to New York City. This year the students travelled to the Big Apple on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26. While there, they busily spent their time exploring various tourist attractions including the High Line and Chelsea Market. They enjoyed Chinatown, South Street Seaport, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and a lovely walk on Fifth Avenue. On Friday night, they had a ‘fancy’ dinner at Brazil Grill and went to see "Mama Mia" at the Broadhurst Theater. They had great weather and a great time with a very enthusiastic group! The following students attended the 2014 Where Eagles Dare Trip: David Fera, Josh Fera, Jade Flynn, Hunter Kellerman, Zane Lloyd, Molly Spengler, Rebecca Walden, and Katie Yoder. __________

Helping Out

Kindergarten students at SS. Peter & Paul School in Hamburg recently read the fable, "Little Red Hen." Students learned a very important lesson about helping out. They decided to put that lesson to use when helping Librarian Anne Maggio make bread. Pictured above is Maggio teaching students about how the yeast is one of the most important ingredients when making bread. Boys & Girls Club of Eden Holds 2nd Annual Fashion Show

The Boys & Girls Club of Eden held its 2nd annual Fashion Show on Saturday, May 3rd at Brierwood Country Club. The event consisted of a brunch, shopping at twelve vendor booths, a number of basket and special raffles, and the fashion show itself, which was sponsored by West Herr Automotive Group and Kohls. The fashions were provided by a number of local clothing retailers, some of which sent their own staff members to help with the volunteer models. Emceed by Christina Abt, the show presented 52 outfits, including casual spring wear, prom dresses, and business casual clothing. The show ended with a bridal party, consisting of a flower girl dress, a ringbearer tuxedo, a father of the bride tuxedo, a mother of the bride dress, and a bridal gown. The event was a great success with over 200 guests in attendance. The Club would like to thank the participating vendors, stores, and donors for their support, the models for their volunteerism and good humor, and everyone who attended for their energy and enthusiasm. The Club looks forward to an even bigger and better Fashion Show next year!

Dear Eden Central School District Residents,

We write to you today as individual taxpayers of the Eden Central School District. We are also members of the school board; however, this is not an official action of the Board of Education. The funds used to pay for this advertisement did not come from the school district. Rather, the funds came from each individual listed below as we feel it is important to share our personal views on the upcoming school budget. There are many components which have gone into creating the 2014-2015 school budget. They center on both spending and revenues. In terms of revenues - next year, students from North Collins Central School District will join the Eden Raiders Football team. This will bring in a new revenue source for the district. This is also a starting point for sharing services with other districts. Another revenue source explored is a building usage fee for organizations that use our facilities. This will help bring addition revenue to the district beginning July 1, 2014. In the coming budget we are restoring academic programs which were cut last year due this coming year’s student needs and requests, enrollment, and directly listening to what residents felt important at the two Community Forums and at board meetings - included are 7th grade German, Physical Education, Elementary Library, and 7th-12th grade Instructional Technology.

Building the $26,396,480 2014-2015 budget was no easy task for the Superintendent or for the Board of Education. The budget represents a tax levy increase of 1.78%, which is less than the increase for the current budget (which was 1.99%) and less than the 2014~2015 proposed statewide average tax levy increase of 2.15%. This year, a new component was added to creating the Eden CSD budget - that of the Budget Advisory Team. The BAT is comprised of board members, union representatives, parents, and community members. This group spent many hours coming up with many great ideas on how to dose our initial $2.1M budget gap. They also had a chance to learn what goes into a budget, see what are mandated spending items (the district is required to spend as required by New York State or the federal government), and learn about the dysfunctional laws, rules, and regulations in NYS that cost every district money. Eden CSD was initially informed by NYS that there would be a 2014-2015 $1.25 million reduction in anticipated State Aid (totaling $7.7M since 2009). This shortfall is known as the Gap Elimination Adjustment (NYS withholds money from districts to balance the State’s own budget). There was some restoration of GEA monies, which meant that Eden CSD still faced about a $1.1M shortfall in state aid.

To help shore up the budget shortfall, many employees helped bridge the budget gap. Eden CSD Administrators, Supervisors, and the Director of Finance offered to take a day without pay. The Eden CSO Superintendent offered to take a day without pay and a salary freeze. The Eden Teachers’ Association offered to take a reduction in health benefits. In summary, this year’s budget is comprised of additional revenue, spending cuts and give-backs which makes it possible to increase class offerings (German, PE, Library, and Technology) that were cut back last year. These program increases are warranted based upon student needs in these areas and a focus by the Board of Education to provide the best academic program to the students of Eden. It is our collective and individual hope that you support this year’s budget. Please vote May 20th
