Rural Transit Brings New Van to Boston, Eden and Colden On August 17, 2016 Rural Transit Service volunteers, staff members and elected officials gathered to introduce the new Rural Transit Service van. This van will service Boston, Eden and Colden. Transportation has become a serious problem for many citizens in Erie County. As families move away and independence becomes a greater challenge for seniors and the increasing transportation costs the need for Rural Transit Service arises. Rural Transit Service allows independence, companionship, and security to our riders. Rural Transit Service is a non-profit transportation service for the elderly, disabled and low/moderate income residents of rural Erie County. Transportation is provided for medical appointments, grocery shopping, banking and personal business trips, etc. with medical taking priority. Client registration is as simple as a phone call to your local dispatch site. Since I cannot drive and live alone, I would have difficulty in shopping and keeping medical appointments. I would be lost without the van. Thank you so much,” voiced a client. Rural Transit Service is asking anyone who hears about their service to get the word out to all of those eligible - “We want everyone eligible to use our service.” But Rural Transit needs volunteers who are willing to give back to their community! Since Rural Transit Service is entirely volunteer driven we are looking for all kinds of dedicated volunteers - drivers, dispatchers and driver aides Our volunteers can work four or eight hour shifts one day a week between 8AM and 4PM Monday through Friday. We also need volunteers who can help seasonally or would like to be back-up volunteers. We are currently in need of volunteers. Gregory A. Zymowski Gregory A. Zymowski of North Collins, NY passed suddenly Aug 12, 2016 at age 53. Beloved Husband for 33 years of Laura (Hoehn) Zymowski. Loving Father of Jeremy (Jill), Scott, and Chris (Emily) Zymowski. Devoted Grandfather of Anna and Jakon Zymowski. Cherished Son of Henry and Joan Zymowski. Dear son in law of Roseleen Graue. Brother of Paul Zymowski, Deborah Elggren and Thomas (Robin) Zymowski. Also survived by many family members and friends. Greg was Veteran in the US Navy and employed as a corrections officer. Greg was an avid snowmobiler, boater and woodsman. He will be forever loved and missed by all. Funeral Services took place at the Wentland Funeral Home, 10634 Main St., North Collins. ________

Grayson J. Smith

Grayson J. Smith of Cattaraugus passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. He was 67. Grayson was born in Gowanda on July 22, 1949, the son of Gerald and Clara (Sinn) Smith. He honorably served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Grayson was employed with WNYDDSO; he worked out of the staterun group home in Little Valley at the time of his retirement. Grayson’s state employment spanned 30 years. Grayson is survived by his former wife, Cheryl and daughter, Tiffany L. Nichols. He is also survived by grandchildren, Dakota Bates and Alexis Stockwell; along with a sister, Mrs. Thomas (Ann) Case of the state of Maryland; one niece; and one nephew. Services to be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by the Schindler Funeral Home, 44 Center St., Gowanda. ________

Joan R. Byrne Joan R. Byrne of Collins, NY passed away August 16, 2016 at age 88. She was born in Jamestown on September 12, 1927, the daughter of Clyde and Gretta (Seagren-Adamson) Byrne. Joan retired from the former GPC in 1990 she was a Public Information Officer. She was the first female Town Justice for the Town of Collins She served as Justice from 1971-1985, Joan was a Certified Alcoholism Counselor at the Tri County Chemical Dependency Unit in Gowanda from 1989-1991, with her late husband they owned and operated the former Gowanda News a weekly paper from 1961-1970. Joan was also a daily reporter for the Jamestown Sun, Colorado Free Press, she had a 20 year career as reporter, editor in daily and weekly papers. Survivors include a son Timothy ( Rhonda) Byrne of Gowanda, a daughter Kristine Kumpf of North Bellmore, a step sonEdward Byrne of Anandale Va. A step daughter Karen McDougall of California. 7 grand children and 6 great grandchildren also survive. Joan was preceded in death besides her parents by her husband Edward Byrne who passed away Sept. 2, 1995. Private graveside service in the Bath National Cemetery, Bath NY, there will be no prior visitation . Arrangements are By the Schindler Funeral Home, 44 Center St. Gowanda. Memorials to the LK Painter Center Main St. Collins NY 14034. ______

Eden Alumni Weekend a Success!!

The last weekend in July featured the annual Eden Central School Alumni events, celebrating past alumni, recent graduates, our school and community. The 50th year ECS reunion Class of 1966 were featured, enjoyed a full weekend of activities to reminisce, catch-up, create new memories, and most generously honor future Eden Central graduates with an spectacular scholarship donation of $11,674.00! Once again thanks to the American Legion NewellFaulkener Post 880 for working with the Eden Alumni organizations to hold the events. The Legion barn on Friday was crowded with alums, guests and friends reconnecting and renewing friendships, with Eden corn, good food, drink, music and dancing. The Saturday dinner event in the Legion Hall featured Eden Alumni Association scholarship awards to 2016 ECS graduates Alexander Bianchi, Brittney Gawel, Leila Richmond, Anna Wightman, Benjamin Asboth and Kaitlyn O’Connell, an outstanding group that make Eden proud! In honor of past Eden graduates, the Eden Alumni Society Hall of Fame inducted five new members for their athletic achievements while at Eden. Inductees were Joseph Klein (2003), James Sweich (2004), Lisa Romano (2005), Sheila Sickau (2007) and William Zittel (2007). Alan Henry Named 2016 Corn King

The 2016 Eden Corn Festival Corn King is Alan Henry. At age 15, and with his first entry, Alan is the youngest Corn King crowned in the history of the Eden Corn Festival. Alan is the son of Martin and Barb Henry, who operate Henry’s Gardens Greenhouse and Cut-Flower operation on Sisson Hwy., Eden. But it is Alan who takes total responsibility for the vegetable crop production on the farm - from seed variety selection, planting, to growing, irrigation, and harvest. He sells the vegetables at his own farmstand, Alan’s Farm Fresh Produce, and at area Farmers Markets. “Alan’s success in growing prize-winning sweet corn in an especially dry growing season is commendable.
