Sickau Participates in Women’s World Football Games

Sheila Sickau, a graduate and former basketball, soccer, and track coach from Eden, currently residing in Heiskell, TN, took part in the 3rd Annual Women’s World Football Games, March 1-6. The New Orleans Saints became the first NFL team to host the Women’s World Football Games, an event that has been organized by USA Football for the past three years. The Saints hosted the games for 224 women from 17 countries. Participants spent six days improving skills and technique, getting instruction from top-level coaches and facing off in competitive games. Among the coaches and observers were Saints running back Khiry Robinson, former Saints receiver, and return specialist Michael Lewis, Tulane coach Willie Fritz and former Arizona Cardinals coaching intern Jen Welter, the first woman to hold a coaching position with an NFL team. Sheila is a quarterback for the Knoxville Lightening out of Knoxville, TN, and attended the games with three other players from her team. The games were featured on the New Orleans Saints official website, in Sports Illustrated, and were filmed by NFL films for a special that will be aired later this year on women’s tackle football. Knoxville Lightening is part of the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL), a full tackle women’s football league. IWFL current has over 1600 women playing the sport for 51 teams across North America. ___________

Eden Girls Swim at 2016 Niagara LSC Championships

Elle Noecker, Sophia Noecker and Maya Hartman competed March 11-13th in Webster, NY at the 2016 Niagara LSC Championships. All three girls are 9-years-old and swim for the Town Wreckers Swim Team (TWST) out of Orchard Park, NY. Elle Noecker competed in the Girls 10 and Under 100 backstroke, finishing 7th place with a time of 1:17.73; 50 butterfly, 4th place 32.99; 100 yard freestyle, 12 place 1:09.73; 100 yard individual medley, 8th place 1:17.54; 100 yard butterfly, 4th place 1:16.57; 50 yard backstroke, 9th place 36.32; 50 yard freestyle, 15th place 31.18 and four relays. Sophia Noecker competed in the Girls 10 and Under 100 yard backstroke, finishing in 24th place with a time of 1:26.11; 100 yard freestyle, 28th place 1:17.97; 50 yard backstroke, 29th place 40.05; 50 yard freestyle, 32nd place 34.61 and four relays. Maya Hartman swam the 50 yard breaststroke, finishing 19th with a time of 43.90 and the 100 yard breaststroke placing 22nd with the time of 1:39.03, and two relays. Elle Noecker has also earned a spot on the 2016 Eastern Short Course Zone Team representing Niagara Swimming. She will be competing in the 50 yard butterfly. __________

Boys & Girls Clubs of Eden & Lake Shore Receive Support from Rite Aid Foundation

On Tuesday, February 23, representatives from the Boys & Girls Club of Eden and its unit, the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore, received a $12,500 check from the Rite Aid Foundation for participating in its KidCents incentive program. From October- January 2015, the Clubs worked hard to encourage community members to sign up for Rite Aid’s KidCents round-up program and designate the Club as their charity of choice. Because the Clubs were able to earn over 75 new designations within this time frame, the Rite Aid Foundation rewarded the accomplishment with a $12,500 donation. Boys & Girls Club Kid Alexa W. Resents to Town Council Members On Wednesday, February 24, Boys & Girls Club of Eden member, Alexa W, addressed Town of Eden council members at a board working session. The town board had invited organizations who have previously received small stipends through the town budget to give short presentations about the programs and services they provide to the community. To demonstrate the impact the Boys & Girls Club has in Eden, Alexa, who is in 5th grade, and her mother, Leigh, prepared short statements to share with the council members and members of the public who attended the meeting. Alexa described her favorite activities at the Club, which include learning how to cook, playing sports and games, and working in the Club’s Snack Shack. “Without the Club, I would lose my job,” she said. “Seriously! I am a Junior Staff member.” She also explained how she appreciates getting help with her homework during daily Power Hour. Alexa’s mom, Leigh, also spoke about the impact the Club has had on her five daughters. “If Eden didn’t have a Boys & Girls Club, our costs for after-

school child care would be through the roof…Plus, my girls love the Club. If chores aren’t getting done at home, I can always say, ‘If this doesn’t get done, you won’t be going to the Club tomorrow.’ Then you see how fast those chores get done! The girls are able to get assistance with their homework and studying and they benefit from opportunities for learning and growing that they can't get at school, like Cooking Club and Musical Theater Club.” As Alexa is competing to become the Club’s 2016 Rising Star this year, meaning she must give a short speech to a panel of adult judges, this opportunity to present to the town board gave her some rare real-life public speaking practice. It also gave the 2014 Member of the Year a brief glimpse into the nitty gritty of local government, something most students don’t really observe until their junior or senior year of high school. Boys & Girls Club of Eden board president, Jim Collins, and executive director Mary Schaefer also presented at the meeting, giving data and background information about the Club. Schaefer shared the Club’s average dai-

ly attendance (55-60 youth per day), hours of operation (2-6:30pm on school days with additional hours during the summer), and number of youth served over the course of a year (300). She also presented information regarding offered activities and events within the Club’s five core programming areas of education and career; sports, fitness, and recreation; character and leadership; health and life skills; and the arts. Collins explained his roots with the Boys & Girls Club, sharing that he started as a Club member at the Boys Club on Franklin Street in Tonawanda and that his father attended Boys Club camp during the Great Depression. Collins and Schaefer both described the mission of the Club as encouraging and empowering youth to become great citizens who are both capable and compassionate and who are willing and able to support their own communities when they become adults. “Wouldn't it be wonderful,” Collins asked, “for Eden to be known as the Garden Spot that grows the best corn, breeds the best children, and produces the best adults?” ___________
