How Did Our Roads Get Their Name?

Come and join us on Monday, April 28, at 7:00 pm for an interesting evening as we explore the origins of the name of roads in Evans and Angola. It is obvious why Southwestern Blvd., Old Lake Shore Rd., Lake St., etc. are appropriately named. But how did Mergenhagen Rd., Dennis Rd., Gowans Rd. and many others receive their name? Members of the Evans Historical Society will share their knowledge of the area and why certain streets have a particular name. However, some road/ street names and their history are unknown to society members. The group will welcome much input from the public so that we all can learn how the roads were named. The meeting will be held at the Evans Historical Society Museum on Route 5 in Evans Center. We hope friends, relatives, and neighbors will attend the session so we can document the history of our roads. Refreshments will be served.

Cheryl Ann Washburn of Derby, NY passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the age of 65. She passed in the comfort of her home, Killarney House, surrounded by her Claddagh family. She was born September 28, 1948 and lived with her parents in Collins Center, NY until 1979 when she moved to Derby. Cheryl was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Washburn and a dear friend of Dick and Bonnie Stapleton. Legion Easter Party

On Sunday, April 13, the Newcomb-Long, American Legion Post 928 held their first children’s Easter party organized by the Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion. Over 40 kids attended this event that had a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny. The children colored eggs, made bunny pictures, and created a photo frame to hold their pictures of them and the Easter bunny. Everyone enjoyed pizza, cookies, and cupcakes for lunch that was donated by the Sons of the Legion. There were 3 different age groups that hunted for eggs filled with candy. Gold coins determined 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Attached is a picture of the winners with the Easter Bunny. Contributed by Cheri Hahn __________

Though Earth Day is synonymous with protecting the environment, the holiday can trace its roots to an environmental disaster that occurred in Southern California in 1969. Over a 10-day period that began on January 28, 1969 just six miles off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif., roughly 80,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into the Santa Barbara Channel and onto the beaches of Santa Barbara County. Thousands of birds and marine animals, including dolphins, elephant seals and sea lions, were killed as a result of the spill, which at the time was the largest such spill to ever occur in United States waters (it is now the third-largest spill after the Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010 and the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill). Though devastating, the Santa Barbara oil spill proved inspiring to Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who is today considered the founder of Earth Day. Senator Nelson used the sense of social consciousness that prevailed throughout much of the United States in 1969 and the outrage at the Santa Barbara oil spill to infuse energy into a growing movement to raise awareness about air and water pollution. His risk paid off, as more than 20 million Americans took to the streets on April, 22, 1970 to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.

Consult local park officials and set up a park cleanup where kids can pitch in by picking up litter. Do the same if you live near a beach or lakefront area. Mothers are often in charge of stocking the family pantry, and this, too, can be used as an opportunity to teach kids about the environment. When visiting the produce aisle, explain to your youngsters why you’re purchasing organic fruits and vegetables instead of those that might have been genetically modified or grown with the use of pesticides. When it comes time to visit the snack aisle, choose organic items and remind kids come snack time that their new favorite treats also happen to be eco-friendly.

Amyotrophic Lateral Schlerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder that paralyzes the body, but leaves the mind intact. Eventually, people with ALS lose the ability to stand or walk, get in or out of bed on their own, or use their hands and arms. In later stages of the disease, individuals have difficulty breathing, as the muscles of the respiratory system weaken. There are 30,000 people living with ALS in the United States and more than 350,000 worldwide. There is no known cure. Please join us in the fight against ALS with Joey and Lizzie Viapiano to continue to fund research for ALS.
