More than 35 artists participated in the outdoor show held Sunday, July 6, on the grounds of the Evans Historical Society. This show was the 41st annual summer exhibition to be presented by the Evans Art Guild. Classical music was provided by Dr. Linda Dimitroff (Rochester). The Historical Society’s museum was open so that visitors could enjoy the collection of early Evans memorabilia. Refreshments were provided by the Most Precious Blood youth group. Show judge was Nancy Mariani, a well known artist in Western New York. She is an art teacher K-12 and department chairperson at Lancaster High School, past co-owner of Meridan Art Gallery on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, and member of the Buffalo Society of Artists and the Pastel Society of America. Artist Winner Awards were presented by EAG President Walter S. Mayo. Evans Force 14U Season The Evans Force season ended on 7/16 with a 6-2 playoff loss in the “A” bracket of the Metro League. #4 seeded Evans fell in a tight game vs. #1 seeded Eden. With the score tied 2-2 in the 5th inning, Eden connected on a 3 run triple to take the lead and the game. The Evans Force started the year with a rough 1-7 record during the Sahlen’s indoor league back in March and April. With 5 of the 10 players new to the team, they were somewhat inexperienced to the speed of the pitchers and base runners. But despite the 1-7 record experience and team building was achieved. Evans started the Metro season with 5 straight wins, including big victories over 1st seed Eden and 3rd seeded Cheektowaga. They also gained plenty of experience during their first 2 tournaments of the year. At the Evans tournament the Force was eliminated in the second round on Sunday by the New Era Diamond Girls. During the Orchard Park tournament, again the Force was eliminated in the second round this time by the Clarence Red Devil’s. As the Dazzler tournament approached in late June, the Force pushed their Metro record to 6-1 with a win over North Buffalo, putting them into second place in the South Division. The Dazzler tournament started big as they beat North Tonawanda 24-1 on Friday night. During the game The Force lost starting pitcher Ruby Thomas for the rest of the tournament after a collision at home plate. With the injury the whole Force team stepped up including first year pitchers Briget Wipple and Emma Isaac. They won 3 games, eliminating North Tonawanda, Fredonia, and North Collins. Contributing big plays offensively and defensively were Erica Holscher, Alyssa Diamond, Whitley Stafford, Claire Castiglia, Natalie Fix, Evie Butlack, Talia Wright (who filled in for second baseman Annmarie Brockman), Madison Schueneman, Kiersten McNamara and Ruby who played outfield but could not hit. During the championship game late Sunday The Force ran out of gas falling to the Dazzlers in extra innings, earning a second place finish out of 12 teams. The Evans Force finished their Metro season with a 7-3 record and two rained out games that were not accounted for. One that was supposed to be against Medina and the other against North Tonawanda, (Evans was winning 16-3 in the 2nd inning). Kanoeing for Kids to Benefit Camp Good Days & Special Times Alex Lahood, a sixteen-year-old from Derby, NY, grew up hearing about Kanoeing for Kids run by Frank Vail, Jr., a fundraising event for Camp Good Days & Special Times, a camp for kids with cancer. Beginning in 1998, Mr. Vail and a crew of canoeists canoed 175 miles down the Erie Canal each summer to Camp Good Days & Special Times and presented the money they raised. Sadly, Mr. Vail passed away in 2010. In 2010, Alex began attending canoe camp in Algonquin Park, Canada, and continued attending canoe camp for four summers, canoeing as far north as the Arctic Ocean in August, 2013. Alex aged out of canoe camp, but he loved canoeing and had a special place in his heart for Camp Good Days. With Mrs. Vail's permission, Alex is renewing Kanoeing for Kids this summer. He has assembled a paddling crew of Bruce Pickard, Brandon Whitworth, Peter Nadjzionek, Joshua Hobika and himself, and road crew of Wayne Harvey, Amy Whitworth, Linda Allen and Kathy Horohoe. Others helping cook and prepare for the expedition include Edel Vail, Bill Furey, Eric Vail, Marilyn Hasenpusch, and many, many others. Pictured here are some of the group who assembled for a "practice paddle" to prepare for the trip. The crews will canoe from Saturday, August 2 to Saturday, August 9, 2014. They will convoy from First Church of Evans to North Tonawanda Botanical Gardens where they will enter the Erie Canal, and then continue down the Erie Canal to the CayugaSeneca Canal to Seneca Lake, trailer across to Keuka Lake, and canoe across Keuka to the Camp where they will deliver the funds they raise and greet the campers. The renewal of Kanoeing for Kids, which was planned since winter, turned out to be very timely this year, as devastating floods hit the Camp this Spring, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage. Lake Shore Middle School Students Go Leaf Green Lake Shore Middle School students grew approximately 200 lettuce plants using high tech hydroponic methods. When the lettuce crop was harvested 20 gallons of lettuce was donated to Claddagh for meals in their client homes. Seventh grade students completed a Technology Education unit on hydroponic farming technique by planting lettuce seeds in an indoor, artificially lit teacher constructed continuous flow growth lab. Seeds were imbedded in a small “icecube sized” piece of rock wool, exposed to artificial light and a water/fertilizer mixture was pumped past the roots to be absorbed. No soil or sun was used and conditions were tightly controlled using timers to simulate ideal growing conditions. The project paid off when student plants quickly outgrew the growth lab and needed to be taken home or donated to a community service organization. Many students chose to donate their plants. A “soil” plot was created outside the classroom were students planted, watered and tended to their overgrown project results. The plants came to full size and were harvested. Mr. Panfil delivered 20 gallons of lettuce to various Claddagh residences for fresh salads. The lettuce was gratefully accepted by residence personnel such as Brandon Rivera above at Tramore residence. Mr. Linn and Mr. Sievert as well as Mr. Panfil’s classes took part in the project. “Students really enjoyed watching something they created grow” Panfil said. “Students were able to use technology and techniques that are being used and tested in order to increase production of food using less space and resources. ‘Lock-In-In-A-Box’ The Lake Shore Middle School’s Community Service and Volunteerism/Leo’s Club completed another successful Lock-In-InA-Box on June 20th. The event, which started in 2006, consists of middle school students giving up their beloved cell phones, electronic devices and everyday luxuries, to spend an entire night living the life of a homeless person. The students walked the Village of Angola collecting cans, spent hours dancing to earn a meal, watched an inspirational movie called “The Soloist”, and then spent the night sleeping outside the school in cardboard boxes. Their efforts resulted in over $3200 being raised to go toward the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore, Friends of the Village and Operation Good Neighbor. Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________
Angola Resident Receives Athletic Honor Kayla Larson of Angola was one of 277 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes in the 2013-14 school year. A student-athlete must earn at least a 3.25 grade point average throughout their career to qualify for the list. The Lakers had 142 males and 135 females on the list this year. Mercyhurst paced the league with 142 males on the squad, easily beating out second-place finishers Gannon and Seton Hill (83 each). The 135 females were second-most in the PSAC, as West Chester led with 159 in 2013-14. Forty-five percent of Laker student-athletes were on the list, good for second-most in the conference. Thirty-six percent of all PSAC student-athletes landed on this year's squad. Larson is a member of the softball team at Mercyhurst. Contributed by Mercyhurst University __________

Christopher Ko, an aspiring pastor from Gordon Theological Seminary in S. Hamilton, Massachusetts, is serving this summer as a pastoral intern at The First Church of Evans. Mr. Ko was invited here by the congregation at First Church as a way of exposing people in our church and from our community to new, young pastoral candidates with a variety of experiences and back grounds. Christopher Ko became convinced he needed to minister to others after his National Guard unit was activated in New York City following the 9/11 attacks in 2001. He later became associated with Youth With a Mission, an organization associated with the University of Nations in Hawaii, where Chris became a student. The YWAM organization helped him to participate for several years in missions work all over the world including on the continent of Africa as well as in China, North Korea and northwest Canada. One particularly memorable trip was to Sri Lanka after the Indian Ocean tsunami, where Chris encountered people who had lost everything including family members. Christopher's wife, Maria, was also a YWAM missionary and they met while serving together. For this ten 'week program, First Church is hosting Christopher Ko, his wife, and two small sons, Ezra and John Nathan. This summer, Chris is delivering Sunday sermons, accompanying Pastor Steve Ridge on home and hospital visits, participating in funerals and weddings, and participating at Vacation Bible School. He hopes in the messages he brings to remind us to be thankful for the bounty we have, to be responsible toward others, and to apply the ancient messages of the Bible faithfully in our own modern lives. This internship is unusual in that pastoral interns from Gordon Conwell usually don't travel this far from the Boston area seminary. The congregation at First Church has provided and furnished an apartment on the First Church campus which they hope to use in future years for similar outreach projects. __________
