WWII “VICTORY” QUILT PRESENTATION
An interesting look at the 1940’s and World War II will be presented at the monthly meeting of the Evans Historical Society. The Monday, June 16 program will be highlighted by the display of a WWII “Victory” quilt. Mrs. Martha Muck and Mrs. Evelyn Mann made the coverlet and will explain the significance of the various designs in the quilt and how it related to the war effort. The ladies will also share stories of the 1940’s that their parents experienced while serving our country. Music of the war years will be provided to enhance the journey back in time. According to Mary Jayne Ginnitti, secretary of the society, the quilt is a beautiful coverlet and was designed by the renown quilter, Eleanor Burns. Ms. Ginnitti mentioned quilters as well as history buffs will certainly enjoy the presentation. The program, at 7 p.m., will be held at the Evans Historical Society Museum on Route 5 in Evans Center. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.

Charles W. Bellavia Sr.
Our beloved father and grandfather, Charles William Bellavia, 95, died peacefully on May 2, 2014. He was born August 28, 1918 in Silver Creek, New York to Carmello and Giuseppa Bellavia. He married his wife Helen “Betty ” on August 20, 1945 in Robertsdale, New York. After graduating from Silver Creek High School in June of 1938, he spent three years in the US Marine Corps from 1943-1946. attached to the WWII “Bob’s Cats” Squadron, which later became known as the Marine Squadron “The Black Knights.” His primary military assignment was as an electronics specialist working on the Corsair aircraft. He earned a sharpshooter designation using the M-1 rifle.
He spent his 30-year working career as a parts inspector for Ford Motor Company in Buffalo, New York while continuing to maintain an active 20-acre family farm at his home in Brant, New York. He spent many years serving on the local council for The Boy Scouts of America, loved to tinker with just about anything, was an avid hunter and loved to travel with his family. Charles is survived by his children Charles W. Bellavia Jr., Susan J. Bellavia and Robert M. Bellavia, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by wife Helen “Betty” Bellavia and children David and Daniel Bellavia (twins) and Paul A. Bellavia. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Westside Church of God at 7925 W. Bethany Home Rd. in Glendale, AZ. The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Kelsey Potter and Russell Dean as Members of the Month (MOTM) for May. Every month Club Staff deliberate and choose members that are trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair, caring, and good citizens at the Club. In addition to having positive character values, the MOTM should participate in a variety of the programs offered at the Club such as sports and games, arts and crafts, Power Hour and Project Learn, Cooking Club, Experiment Club, etc. Kelsey is in second grade at Highland Elementary. Kelsey is in Mrs. Smardz’s class and her favorite subject is reading. Kelsey’s favorite food is pizza and her favorite color is blue. Kelsey enjoys coming to the Club because she likes to be with her friends. When Kelsey is at the Club she participates in a variety of programming such as Daily Challenges, Minute to Win It, arts and crafts, and activities in the gym. Kelsey likes to hula hoop and it shows. She is always the last one standing in hula hoop contests! Russell is in Mrs. Wegrzynowski’s fourth grade class at J.T. Waugh Elementary. Russell’s favorite subject in school is science. He likes to eat hot dogs and his favorite color is also blue. If you were to come to the Club, it is a safe bet that you will find Russell in the games room. He likes to play with the cars and blocks with his friends. Russell is always polite and kind to the members and staff at the Club. When Russell is not at the Club he likes to race slot cars. Also pictured with the Members of the Month is the Club’s Student of the month, Brook Borzelleri. Brook is one of the newest and youngest members at the Club. She attended the Peanut Patrol program this winter which introduced her to “life at the Club”. She enjoyed Peanut Patrol so much that as soon as she turned 7 years old; Brook joined the Club as a full-time member. Although the school year is winding down, Brookstill understands the importance of finishing her school work before she begins to play. Brook can be found in the Power Hour room as soon as she gets off the school bus. If she is not completing her homework, Brook is participating in various activities around the Club. Brook is a first grader at A.J. Schmidt Elementary. Brook’s favorite subject is ELA and her favorite book is The Cat in the Hat. What does it mean to be professional, and how is one's character connected to professionalism? These questions and more were answered recently in Lake Shore 2017: Freshman Seminar. The Freshman Academy was honored to have Mrs. Mary Hosler of St. Columban's Retirement Center (former vicepresident of Evans' Bank) and Ms. Donna Wendt of Goya Great Lakes with us to talk to all freshman about professionalism. Specifically, these professional ladies discussed the relationship between character and being professional as well as what they look for in employees (and what they consider taboo). Students were able to ask questions and comment about what professionalism means to them. In addition to learning about personal hygiene, dress, manners and public-speaking skills, freshmen have been learning the consequences of posting too much information on social media. They have learned how items they post or text now could and will negatively affect them professionally. Students were able to hear from true, professional women who serve as leaders in our community; this was a great opportunity to meet roles models and for students to hear different points of view outside of Lake Shore High School. The Academy would like to thank both Mrs. Hosler and Ms. Wendt for their time and advice as well as Principal JulieAnn Hoerner for allowing the Academy to run such great programs (Attached: Mrs. Hosler and Ms. Wendt speaking with freshmen students). Music Making with the Masters!
Lake Shore Middle School Orchestra students were paid a visit by the Fever Pitch Quartet on May 13th. The Quartet came to Lake Shore Middle School to work with students in the class and also play an evening concert. The Fever Pitch Quartet did a workshop, master class and performance for the students during the day and also in the evening. Many students also played solos and chamber music throughout the day. The quartet answered questions the students had and went into great length about how playing in an ensemble is more than just music but it involves communication, trust, pride, hard work and leadership. The students finished the day by playing solos, duets, trios and quartets in the first ever Lake Shore Middle School Chamber Music Night. Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________

On a recent trip to Jamaica, Justin Dutchess asked Leah Genco to be his wife. She said yes ... That being said, Michael and Robin Genco, of Eden, would like to announce the engagement of their daughter, Leah Michele Genco to Justin L. Dutchess, son of Peter and Susie Dutchess, of Angola. Leah is a graduate of SUNY Brockport with a degree in finance. Leah is employed by Lawley Insurance of Buffalo. She is a business manager with the company and is also currently attending Canisius College to obtain her Masters Degree in Business Administration. Justin is a graduate of Lake Shore High School and has been employed by Boston Valley Terra Cotta, in Boston Hills, for the past 13 years. An August 29th, 2015 beach wedding is being planned. Justin and Leah are still undecided on their honeymoon destination.

Mr. Brian Dziewa has been employed as a School Psychologist with the Lake Shore Central School District for the past 7 years. Brian is currently assigned to the Middle School where he is Chairperson for the Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings in addition to completing evaluations with students. He also facilitates the Committee on Preschool Special Education meetings. In addition to being a school psychologist, Brian has coached the Girls Varsity Volleyball team for the past 5 years. He is actively involved in the Big Brother - Big Sister Program at the Middle School. He is an integral part of the Middle School as a chaperone for a number of events, including the recent 8th grad trip to Washington. Brian is an extremely conscientious employee who is well respected by administrators, staff, parents and students. He is a team player who is always willing to take on new responsibilities and challenges. Brian engages everyone around him with his friendly and compassionate personality. Brian Dziewa is a valuable asset to the Special Education and Athletic Departments, Middle School, and the Lake Shore Central School District.

A few students from Southtowns Catholic School took a Beach Glass Class at the Wanakah Seaway Trail Building. The class was taught by Nancy Willliams. Lake Shore Alumni Receives Award from Niagara University
Former Lake Shore 2010 graduate, Kimberly Vona, was the recipient of the Senior Medal at the Niagara University commencement ceremony held May 10, 2014. The Senior Medal is awarded annually to the student with the highest grade point average of the graduating seniors. In addition to the Senior Medal, Kimberly also received the Kevin Mulhern Award as the outstanding athlete in the senior class, and the Everett W. Ockerman Award as the top graduate in the area of Marketing. During her four years at NU, Kimberly served as president of the Niagara University Marketing Association, was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, set a new NU Cross Country record in the 6k, and medaled twice at the MAAC championship. In addition, she earned NU Student Athlete of the Week honors five times, MAAC Runner of the Week three times, and ECAC Runner of the Week once. Currently, Kimberly is completing a full year marketing research internship with Lactalis American Group, Inc., while pursuing her MBA at Niagara University. Kimberly is the daughter of Dr. David and Judy Vona of Angola, NY. Kimberly is pictured at graduation with Niagara University president, Rev. James Maher. Contributed by Judy Vona
