Fifth grade band and orchestra students have the privilege of combining members from the A. J. Schmidt, Highland, and J. T. Waugh Elementary Schools to form an All-District Band and All-District Orchestra. The students enjoy the sound of playing with a full ensemble. It also gives them an opportunity to get to know many of their fellow fifth graders before they make the transition to the Middle School. The All-District Band, under the direction of Mrs. Martin and Ms. Streeter, and the All-District Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Capitummino, played for a judge at the Fantasy Island Music Festival on May 18th. The Evans Force 14U girls softball team opened their 2014 Metro League schedule at home May 4th vs. the D5 Dazzlers. The Force fell behind early trailing 3-1 after 3 innings. But in the bottom of the fourth the Force powered home 5 runs to take a 6-3 lead. A 1 run triple by Emma Isaac, 2 run double by Kiersten McNamara and 1 run single by Whitney Stafford powered the Force to the lead. A two run double by Ruby Thomas in the 4 run sixth secured the 11-3 victory for the Force. On the day, Emma went 1 for 4 2 RBI, Kiersten McNamara 1 for 2 2 RBI and Ruby Thomas 2 for 2 2 RBI to provide the offensive. Madison Scheunman and Alyssa Diamond each added RBIs. Ruby Thomas started just where she left off last season. Ruby who led the Evans 12U team to a division title last season pitched the complete game win. All 3 runs scored were unearned and she only allowed 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. Ruby retired the last 12 batters of the game in order with 4 straight 1-2-3 innings. Next, crosstown rival Eden Lady Raiders visited Evans on May 18th. The Force opened with a 1-0 lead after one as Ruby Thomas scored on a Emma Isaac single. Eden battled back to score 3 in the top half of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. All the runs were unearned off of starter Briget Whipple who only allowed 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3 thru 4. Eden took out starter Lexi Haberer who had allowed only 1 hit and struckout 8 including the last 4 she faced. That proved to be the break Evans needed as Anne Marie Brockman singled home Emma Isaac and Whitney Stafford got a clutch two out two run double to score Erica Holscher and Anne Marie Brockman to take the lead 4-3. Isaac, Holscher, Brockman and Stafford were only Force to get hits in the game. Haberer returned to the game in the fifth and did not yield any hits in her return. Natalie Fix came up big in the sixth with a groundout RBI to score Erica Holscher for an insurance run in a 5-3 victory. Natalie had a good game behind the plate picking off a runner at first and stopping a rally in the third throwing out a girl at third. Ruby Thomas continued her dominance as she finish off the last 9 batters in order to earn the save striking out 5. Going back to last game Ruby has been perfect the last 7 innings she pitched. Tara A. Barone, a resident of Derby, NY, received a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Art from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Alfred University (AU) during commencement exercises May 17, 2014, at McLane Center on the AU campus. Barone is the daughter of Anthony and Tammy Barone of Derby, NY. She is a graduate of Lake Shore Central Senior High. Barone was among the eight doctoral degree recipients, 83 master’s degree recipients, 411 baccalaureate degree recipients and 28 advanced studies certificate recipients who heard David E. Sanger, national security correspondent for the New York Times say their degree is “an engraved invitation to keep asking questions as if you are still in the classroom. Ask why. Scoreboard Dedication
A tribute to a special young man will be a constant presence in the outfield of the Lake Shore Central School Baseball Field. A new electronic scoreboard was dedicated in memory of Brian Galfo. Brian died on December 30, 2009 as a result of a car accident. He was known for his charm, personality, sense of humor and ability to light up a room. Brian was a stand-out athlete and wore the number three on the football field, basketball court and baseball diamond. The family and friends of Brian Galfo honored his memory with the purchase of the new scoreboard that was dedicated on May 7th. Brian’s legacy will be remembered and will be shared by generations to come with the official dedication of the Brian Galfo Scoreboard in left field.
