I had an article ready to be published on how to keep your pets safe this spring, but with a recent influx of Parvovirus cases this month, I decided to discuss this topic instead. Over the past month and a half, we have diagnosed 15 cases of parvovirus. Thats 15 more than last year (last year for this same time period we did not diagnose a single case of parvovirus). My goal with this article is to inform you of some basic information on parvovirus, how it can be prevented, and the treatment and recovery of the disease. "Parvo," as many people know it, is a virus that is made of a single strand DNA and a protein wall. Viruses (parvovirus, common cold, or influenza among others) can not be treated with antibiotics. The virus can be found in the environment, infected dogs, and wild canines (coyotes, foxes, etc) can carry the virus and shed it in the environment. The virus can be carried on shoes, clothes and dirty hands from one area to another. It is safe to say that any area that is not regularly disinfected is a high risk of being contaminated with the virus. Unfortunately, the virus is capable of surviving freezing temperatures, and can last for years. Parvo is not a "puppy-only" disease. Any dog that is unvaccinated is at a high risk of becoming infected with the virus at any time. Vaccinated dogs are usually protected if they become exposed, and will be able to fight the disease for the most part without requiring any treatment . When a dog is exposed to the virus, it becomes infected with what we call a fecal- oral transmission. The dog ingests the virus from the environment were there was feces, or from the feces directly. The virus then travels to the small intestines and bone marrow, where it replicates in the cells of the walls of those tissues. In the process of replicating, it destroys the cells in both areas. The destruction of the cells in the small intestines lead to the vomiting and diarrhea. Because the walls of the intestines have no protection, bacteria can now penetrate from the intestines into the bloodstream, possibly killing the dog.The destruction of the bone marrow leads to a decrease in the immune system, exposing the patient to a systemic infection. The virus itself doesn't

kills the infected dog, but the excessive vomiting, diarrhea (which causes dehydration) and possible systemic bacterial infection can lead to the actual death of the patient within days of clinical signs. Diagnosis of parvovirus is done by taking a rectal swab and testing it with an ELISA (Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay) test. This sounds complicated and high tech but it's actually the same type of technology used in home pregnancy test kits. Fortunately, proper treatment can save up to 80% of dogs. Treatment consists of intravenous fluids, anti-vomiting and antibiotic injections for an average of 5 to 7 days. Prevention is obviously safer and more cost effective. Parvovirus can be prevented by proper vaccination with a simple distemper/ parvo virus vaccine, starting at 6 weeks of age. The vaccine has to be given in a series that is dependent on age of the dog. Vaccines that are administered by a veterinarian come with a 100% guarantee, and if the vaccine fails to protect your pet the manufacturer will pay for the diagnostic and treatment of your pet up to a specified amount, usually up to $5,000. Disinfection of the environment can be done with 1 part bleach / 30 parts water ( example- 1 cup of bleach to 30 cups of water). Once the patient is recovered, the patient needs to be in a therapeutic prescription diet and fed multiple small meals for a few weeks, as well as antibiotics to protect the body from secondary infection while the intestines heal. No exposure to other dogs should be permitted, to prevent infecting other pets or soils. The patient should complete a vaccine series once the veterinarian sees fit. Note that no unvaccinated dogs should be entered into the previously infected dog environment for years to come to prevent infection of those patients. If you have any questions please call your veterinarian, or if you want to learn more about parvovirus please visit www.veterinarypartner. com and search for the word parvo. The veterinarian written articles go more in depth about this disease, and provide accurate information. Luis Tarrido, DVM Eden Veterinary Clinic, PLLC

Animal Lovers Help Bring Lost Dogs Home

Three of the 33 Siberian Huskies that were rescued by HEART Animal Rescue & Adoption Team on December 27, 2013 escaped from their foster homes within the last two months. We are not going to concentrate on how the dogs escaped because the heartache that each foster family endured does not need to be re-lived. However, we do want to share each dog’s story of how complete strangers united for the well-being of the missing dogs. If it wasn’t for the wonderful, kind-hearted, motivated & dedicated animal lovers in our community these dogs would not be safe and happy today. The first escapee was the “Eden Fugitive”, now known as Kodiak. We believe that Kodiak had his own plan from the get-go and knew exactly where he belonged. He just took the long road to get there. Kodiak was missing in Eden for a week. HEART volunteers would get reports of sporadic sightings of Kodiak. They set humane traps and attempted to set up feeding stations but Kodiak was always on the move. The Saturday before the reported Polar Vortex was to hit our area HEART volunteers and concerned citizens kicked their rescue mission into overdrive. Knowing that dangerously low temperatures were coming in less than 48 hours they knew they HAD to bring Kodiak to safety. A couple from Angola saw Kodiak’s story on Facebook, being animal lovers and current Husky owners…they knew their only option was to help look for Kodiak. On Friday, January 3rd they were driving around looking for Kodiak until 11 pm. Just as they were about to call it quits until the next morning, Kodiak ran right in front of their car! They tried to follow Kodiak with their Husky, Timber but Kodiak was too scared to come to them and managed to slip away from their sight. Saturday, they were more determined than ever but Kodiak didn’t want to be found yet. On Sunday, January 5th a local farmer reported that Kodiak was in his backyard. HEART volunteers, the couple from Angola and their friend and many friends Kodiak didn’t even know he had rushed to the area Kodiak was last seen. Following the farmers’ direction, Kodiak was spotted running along the woods. However, he took off again and was out of sight. Ivan, an English Mastiff, his owner, her son and a HEART volunteer walked through a corn field and into the woods in the direction Kodiak was last seen. Ivan seemed to know what he was looking for…& lead his people right to Kodiak! Ivan chased Kodiak for a few yards then the two dogs stopped, tails wagging, and played for a few minutes. As you can imagine, this was one of the many heart-warming moments in the minutes to come. Ivan’s owner called Ivan back to her…& Kodiak followed Ivan! Ivan, his owner and her son moved ahead a bit while the HEART volunteer knelt in the snow tossing turkey to Kodiak. After luring Kodiak to her and slowly gaining Kodiak’s trust she took the one & only chance she knew she would have...& grabbed ahold of Kodiak! Kodiak did not resist. He knew he needed help so he willingly gave in to his rescuers. Kodiak was too weak and scared to walk out of the woods on his own so the HEART volunteer carried him through the woods, through the corn field and to safety in her car. At this point there were happy tears flowing and a huge sense of relief that Kodiak was finally safe! As we mentioned in the beginning of Kodiak’s story…we truly believe he knew where he was meant to be forever. Kodiak is now a loving member of the couple’s family from Angola that searched tirelessly for him. Kodiak has a Husky sister named Timber and an American Eskimo brother named Juneau. Kodiak fit right into their family…as if he was always there. The second escapee is Beau from North Buffalo. While Beau was not missing as long as Kodiak, he still had angels watching out for him. Beau was missing for less than 24 hours. There were several reported sightings of him but volunteers and his foster family, which is now his forever family could not get to where he was sighted fast enough before he was gone again. Beau was finally captured by a Good Samaritan not too far from where he went missing. The gentleman realized Beau had to belong to someone due to the harness he was wearing. Beau was missing during one of our coldest nights. By the time he was found, he was too cold, tired and hungry to resist being rescued. Beau’s family also adopted, Loki. Loki is a Siberian Husky puppy, one of the 33 rescued. Beau & Loki’s family is head over heels in love with both of them, and it shows! The third and hopefully last escapee is Goliath, aka “The Kaisertown Husky.” Goliath appears to be the oldest of the 33 Huskies that were rescued at approximately 5 years of age. Goliath was actually on the loose twice! Once, just very briefly until his foster family caught up with him and brought him back home. The second time was not so brief. Goliath was missing for 26 days, from January 29th – February 23rd. He went missing from the west side of Buffalo near Niagara Street and Porter Avenue. Initially there were a few reported sightings of Goliath. The last sighting of Goliath in that area was him being hit by a car at Grant and Lafayette streets a few days after he went missing. After being hit, he got up and ran away. This was the last anyone reported seeing Goliath until February 18th went he was spotted near Fontana’s Grove, Clinton Street and Casimer Street in Kaisertown. KAISERTOWN!? He sure traveled a long way! A HEART volunteer was contacted by a woman who had been feeding Goliath in her backyard on Casimer Street, every day for a few days and multiple times a day! Since a feeding station had already been established by the home owners, a HEART volunteer set a humane trap early in the afternoon on Sunday, February 23rd. Right before midnight the home owner notified HEART that Goliath was captured in the humane trap!!! HEART volunteers rushed there to get Goliath out of the humane trap and take him to safety. Goliath was in good spirits and seemed happy to have human contact again. Other than losing ten pounds Goliath is in good health and is currently looking for his forever home. If you or someone you know is interested in adopting Goliath, contact his foster Mom at peachyshell113@yahoo.com or a HEART representative at 716-821-1915. The drive motivating an animal lover is like no other. They do what has to be done and anything in their power to bring an animal to safety. HEART Animal Rescue & Adoption Team would like to extend a huge “THANK YOU” to everyone who had any part in bring their three missing Huskies home safely. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead. Written by Michelle D. Seventh Annual Boys & Girls Club Game Night Held

The Boys & Girls Club held its 7th annual Game Night on Friday, April 4th at the American Legion in Eden. The event was attended by approximately 150 people and hosted by "The Quizmaster," Dennis George. The night kicked off with Dennis quizzing the audience about a variety of topics including television theme songs, common phrases, sports, and movies. Audience members were also called up to the buzzer to participate in a men vs women Family Feud-style competition. Of course, despite its name, this event is not all fun and games. The 18 registered teams who participated in the evening's team competition were hungry for a win, including last year's returning champions, the Eden Elementary Teachers! After several rounds of play, those 18 teams were winnowed down to the final four: The Ambulance Chasers (sponsored by Campbell & Shelton), the Quizzards, the Clinicians (sponsored by Mobile Primary Partners), and Keep Calm, Quiz On. The lightning quick buzzer round sadly eliminated the Ambulance Chasers and Keep Calm, Quiz On, leaving Game Night veterans the Quizzards to duke it out with Game Night rookies, the Clinicians. After a final round of intense buzzing and fierce competition, the Clinicians were victorious, taking home the coveted Game Night trophy! The Club would like to thank all the volunteers, teams, and spectators who helped make this event a success. We look forward to running this fun event next year! Please mark your calendars for the Club's other fun events: the 2nd annual Fashion Show, set for Saturday, May 3rd and our Spring Chicken Barbeque, set for Saturday, May 17th . Call the Club at 992 2702 for more information. __________

Southtowns Catholic School visits the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph

Second graders at Southtowns Catholic School had the opportunity to spend the morning with the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in Hamburg. The second graders sang a Lenten song, made stained glass crosses and read stories to the Franciscan Sisters. At the end of their visit, they were given a tour of the beautiful facility. It was a very peaceful and meaningful morning for the class. When they returned to school, many asked to add the sisters to our classroom "Prayer Corner." __________

Students at SS. Peter & Paul Community School in Hamburg will had a unique treat recently during their Catholic Charities Carnival. School Principal Patrick Riester agreed in February that if the students read 150,000 minutes in 40 days (by Friday, March 28) he would reward their hard work and dedication by shaving his head. As part of the conclusion for the Catholic Charities Carnival, Riester fulfilled his promise to his students and had bis head shaved. Middle school student Devin McDonnell had the honor of providing the first cut. In the past Riester has also allowed students to slime him with green goo in an effort to reward the students and their reading efforts. Pictured above is Riester getting his head shaved by Devin McDonnell. __________

The entire SS. Peter & Paul Community School recently went Blue4Ben. Pictured above is the school student body, along with faculty and staff who dressed in blue in honor of Ben Sauer, who is a 4-year-old who was recently diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. His parents would always dress him in blue, to separate him from his twin brother, Jack. So in honor of him, we wore blue as well. ___________

Students in Mrs. Walkowski's grade 2 art class are learning about Relief Sculptures and spring birds. A relief sculpture is a type of sculpture that is part of a wall, or hanging on a wall, that is two and threedimensional. The 3D portion of their picture is the nest an the 2D are the birds. While the students built their sculpture, Mrs. Walkowski told them about how birds build their nests, lay their eggs and eventually the baby birds learn to fly. This is also part of the Grade 2 Spring Science Curriculum. Pictured: Alex Davis, Jordan Mancuso, Kaylee Dodson, Emma Labby, Gloria Ciccarella, Cailum Irwin, Ava Dzubella, Riley Jones & Grace Crupe.
