Boys & Girls Club of Eden News
VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR: The Boys and Girls Club of Eden recently recognized two individuals who went above and beyond with service to the Club. Michelle and Wes Smith were named the 2016 Volunteers of the Year. Michelle volunteered to join the Bash for Cash committee back in the fall. The Bash for Cash is one of the Club’s biggest fundraisers and requires a lot of time and effort from a group of dedicated volunteers. Michelle committed herself to many meetings and helped put decorations together, often for hours at a time. Wes also took part in the event by building a tiki roof from scratch. Without these two, the success of the fundraiser would have been in jeopardy, and that would have significantly affected the Club’s ability to pay for supplies, support staff, programming, and sports equipment. The Club is extremely grateful for Wes’s and Michelle’s commitment and effort. FRIEND TO THE CLUB: The Friend to the Club award was first given in 2013 to recognize individuals who have significantly contributed to the Boys & Girls Club over the course of many years. This year’s recipient is Mr. Richard Schaefer, who first joined the board as a representative from the school district back in 2003. After retiring from the district in 2013, Mr. Schaefer stayed on as an elected board member for a few more years, and then rotated off the board. Even after stepping off the board, he still continues to attend board meetings, take minutes, and serve as the facilities manager for the Club. He has organized volunteer workdays for the annual United Way Day of Caring, Raiders Respond Day, and other groups of community volunteers. He has also given the building a makeover by fully painting the interior over the course of the past two years and ensuring that light bulbs are replaced, broken equipment is fixed, and the grass is kept short so Club members can play on it. His dedication to the Club and its members has been irreplaceable to the organization. Pictured is Richard Schaefer. ___________

On June 21st, 2016 The Brant-Farnham Historical Society and the Brant Post Office hosted a Pictorial Postmark Event in celebration of the dedication of Brant Town Park’s “Flossie Field”. The Brant Post office had a constant flow of people coming in for the special Pictorial Cancel with a total of 208 cancels issued in just 4 short hours!! A FREE chance to win an engraved “Town of Brant Flossie Field” regulation size baseball bat (donated by Bill and Patty Friend) was available to all those who received the pictorial postmark. The Historical Society also provided FREE Flossie Field Post Cards to any and all - which are still available until supplies run out! Retired Farnham Historians Beverly Wasmund and Jo Battaglia, distributed Flossie Field Baseballs to the first 20 people who visited and received the special postmark. Also in attendance was Rosalee “Tish” Hill, who is the daughter of “Flossie”. “Tish” happily signed a few of the pictorial cancels for those who asked. All who attended and requested the pictorial cancel, were asked to sign the official pictorial cancel book that the Brant Post Office maintains and owns. This book is a historical record of all pictorial cancels, that have been offered through the Brant Post Office. Carrie, Mike and Dave were thrilled to see such activity in what is a normally quiet Brant Post Office. It was a wonderful, fun and busy afternoon! At the May Board Meeting, the Brant Town Board had unanimously voted to name the ball diamond “Flossie Field” in honor of Leah “Flossie” Mirusso. The actual dedication was held at the Brant Summer Festival in the Brant Town Park on June 18th. The winner of the baseball bat was Jen Hill, whose name was pulled by Carrie McDonough; the PMC at Brant NY. The Pictorial Postmark was designed by Angola, NY Native, Christian LoGrasso and is available for mail in requests until July 20th, 2016! There is still time to get one! North Collins Veterans Tribute Groundbreaking, June 12, 2016
It was a beautiful day in North Collins. The sky was blue, the sun was brilliantly shining, a brisk breeze was blowing and the Veterans Tribute site was awesome. The site was packed with supporters, visitors, our politicians and most importantly many of this country’s veterans. Veterans came from near and far to help celebrate this wonderful and meaningful ceremony. The event began with the North Collins American Legion and the American Legion Riders, Southern Tier Chapter, presenting the colors. Boy Scout Troop #429 assisted with the raising of the flag. Local singers ‘Finding Dimes’ sang the National Anthem. Following this solemn and memorable opening the program continued with James Lint, President of the Veterans Tribute, presenting a short background of the idea of the Tribute and what lies in store for the foreseeable future at the site. The Board of Directors, consisting of twelve members, has dedicated hundreds of hours to this project. The Tribute has been incorporated, received it’s 501 c 3 status and fundraising is well under way. The fundraising for the Tribute has taken on many avenues: the process for grant applications has begun, donation letters are being sent to local businesses for donations, the Tribute will have brick pavers as it’s base which will be engraved with service men and women’s names and rank, which are being sold to honor loved ones who have served or are serving in the military. After President Lint’s presentation he then introduced our local politicians in attendance who have been extraordinarily helpful in pushing the Tribute forward. In attendance was Mitch Martin from Senator Patrick Gallivan’s office, Assemblyman David DiPietro and Legislator John Mills. Each gave moving speeches about the importance of the site, the work that has been accomplished to date and the honor and respect that they have for our military members for the service they provide to keep our country safe and free. Along with these officials were the local Town Supervisor John Tobia and Village Mayor Vincent George each relaying how much this site will mean to the Town and the heroes who will be recognized there. The crowd, which was well over one hundred, was also fortunate to hear words from Holly Baker a local leader from the Gold Star Mothers. She is a remarkable woman and speaks from the heart and her experience of the loss of a child to war. The Mission of the Tribute is as follows: To have a peaceful site to recognize and honor those who have served and those who continue to serve this great Nation which promotes freedom and democracy. The ceremony concluded with the elected officials and President Lint breaking ground with excavation of the site to begin in the next few weeks. ___________

Brant and Farnham Baseball- Past and Present
The Brant Farnham Historical Society provided their 13th Annual Historical Display for the Brant Summer Festival over the Father’s Day weekend. Well over 200 people attended the display area. As a tribute to the dedication of the Brant Park Ball field as “Flossie Field”, one of the main historical displays this year focused on Brant and Farnham Baseball. Farnham resident Joyce Cureo loaned us her amazing Brant-Farnham baseball scrapbooks from 1954 and 1955. In our archives we found information regarding Joyce’s father, Red Cureo, who was one of our hometown favorite ball players, as documented in many historical articles written by our town’s people. Many of the scrapbook photos were used in the display, and are now part of our historical archives. Sandy and Vince Fininzio Sr. loaned us some “recent” baseball photos (1968-1980’s) for our scanned archives and BrantFest display. Vince Fininzio Sr. is shown in the one photo, happily finding himself in the 1968-71 team photo of the “Brant Bombers”, a Buffalo Evening News sponsored baseball team. The historical display also included a photo of Brant/Farnham’s “next generation” baseball players, depicting our 2016 Town Baseball players who play on many different teams throughout the surrounding area. Robert W. Hauck
Robert W. Hauck, age 92, of East Eden, NY died Friday, July 8, 2016 at Mercy Hospital. Robert was born in East Eden, the son of Clarence and Jessie Hauck. He married his loving wife, the former Mamie C. Vara in 1950 in St. Mary’s Church in East Eden. They were married for 63 years. He owned and operated the Hauck’s Farm for many year. He was a member of the Hamburg Moose Lodge #992. He was also a member of the United Steel Workers Local 2266. He loved farming’ enjoyed riding his tractor, mowing his lawn and having a Genesee Beer. He had a special love for wild life as he enjoyed the deer that came into his yard and feeding the birds. Robert is survived by his two sons, Bill (Diane) Hauck and Ray (Barb) Hauck, nine grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 Great-Great grandchild. Funeral Services were held at the Laing Funeral Home Inc. 2724 W. Church St. Eden. Memorials may be made to the Eden Police Group, 2795 E. Church St. Eden or Eden EMS, Box 111, Eden. Stephen E. Twarozek Stephen E. Twarozek of North Collins, NY passed July 10, 2016 at age 90. He was born March 26, 1926. Beloved husband of Bernice (Janik) Twarozek; loving father of Mark and Scott Twarozek; brother of Judy Brazike. Funeral Services were held at The Wentland Funeral Home, 10634 Main St. (Rte. 62), North Collins, followed by a 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial from Holy Spirit Church, North Collins. Stephen was a retired Ford auto worker, a member of American Legion Post #1640, William Dils VFW Post #199 and Holy Spirit Altar & Rosary Society. ________
Robert L. Burnside “Coach”
Robert L. Burnside “Coach” age 74, was born July 5, 1942 and died July 10, 2016. He graduated from North Collins High School in 1959 and from UB in 1964. Robert taught Math at both Eden Middle and Eden Sr. High School for 35 years starting in 1964-65. Retired 2000. He was the Varsity Baseball Coach for 45 years and amassed over 400 victories throughout his career and is a nominee for Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. He also was the girls Basketball coach for 17 years. The Eden Baseball Field dedicated in his name in 2015. Besides being a math teacher for 38 years with Eden Central Schools, Robert coached girls’ basketball and baseball for many years. It was in baseball that “Coach” was known for his innovative coaching ideas and his constant pursuit of perfection, both for himself and his players. Coach Burnside was a lifelong student of the game, annually attending the “Be the Best You Can Be” baseball conference and bringing back valuable insights for the Eden program. Robert was head of the Eden program for 33 years, leading his teams to an overall record of 414 wins and 242 losses while capturing seventeen Erie County Interscholastic Conference titles and two sectional titles. In 2003, Coach Burnside turned the program over to former player and assistant coach Eric Cooper, but remained on for the next 12 years as a mentor, associate coach, generous financial contributor and staunch supporter.
His passion and dedication to Eden Athletics were the impetus for Eden Central’s Athletic Department to rename their service award the “Robert Burnside Dedication Award” and in 2015 to honor Robert’s 47 years of coaching baseball by naming the varsity baseball complex “Burnside Field.” In addition to his duties as the Raiders head coach, Mr. Burnside also umpired for many years and coached teams in the former Quad-County Baseball Association, the County of Erie Baseball Association, and The American Legion Baseball League and he was a long-time statistician for the Eden Raider football program. Coach battled many illnesses throughout his life until died of cancer. He was the son of the late LeRoy and Ruth Burnside; Survived by sister Donna (Herbert) Rapp and uncle of Diane (Michael) Burkard) and Mark (Katherine) Rapp; great uncle of Emma, Spencer, and Hope Burkard and William, Mark, and Casey Rapp; also survived by many, many friends and colleagues. Flowers gratefully declined; memorials may be made to Eden Baseball Club, M and T Bank, 600 South Park Avenue, Hamburg, NY 14075.
