This long-needed partnership between SPSCC and Yelm Community Schools brings opportunities to the Yelm community at many learning levels. Featured on the cover, YHS student Bailey Hobson is considering Running Start to launch into the Culinary Arts program, teacher Erika Hedegard will teach College in the High School chemistry classes, and Principal Ryan Akiyama will continue to create paths to higher education for YHS students. Apply online or in person at the One Stop desk in Building 22, Olympia Campus, or in Building 1, Lacey Campus. There is no application fee.

Activate your new student email and log in to the college network. Check it daily for important messages from the College.

Fill out the FAFSA to apply for financial aid and scholarships. Then visit the Financial Aid Portal to ensure your financial aid application is complete.

Take the College Placement Test or submit your high school or college transcripts. Attend an optional free Test Prep Workshop before the test or review online.

FAFSA FIRST The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first and most important step toward affording college. The FAFSA is the base of the financial awards, grants, and loans you can receive. Complete the application at fafsa.gov starting Oct. 1 for the following school year. List SPSCC as your school: School Code 005372.

NOTEWORTHY Clipper Athletics welcomes new soccer and volleyball coaches Juan P. Murillo, Soccer “Soccer is such a global sport. It’s amazing when people from different backgrounds and countries can come together for a unified goal. I think we need that in society right now.” Head Men's Soccer Coach and educational planner Juan P. Murillo brings new energy to SPSCC's soccer program after many successes playing and coaching in Seattle, Monterey Bay, Calif., and Santa Cruz, Bolivia. After getting his college career started at Edmonds Community College, Coach Murillo went on to play and earn a bachelor's degree at California State University, Monterey Bay. He is currently pursuing a Master in Sport Administration and Leadership from Seattle University.

Get recruited by Historically Black Colleges and Universities Do you dream of attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU)? SPSCC and the Thurston Group of Washington State are bringing HBCUs to Lacey to meet and enroll students on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018. The 15th Students of Color Recruiting Day offers students a chance to meet HBCU representatives who are ready to enroll and award scholarships. You can catch men's soccer matches at the Lacey Regional Athletic Complex (RAC). Tusalava Kuaea, Volleyball "The South Sound is talent-rich in volleyball players, so some student athletes who don’t get to start at a four-year may start right away at a community college." Head Women's Volleyball Coach and Outreach Admissions Specialist Tusalava Kuaea is experienced and enthusiastic when it comes to shaping programs from the ground up. She inherits SPSCC volleyball in its third season and hopes to make a mark in the NWAC and support her players in earning their AA degrees and transferring to universities. Coach Kuaea has led teams to huge victories as both player and coach, including Lakes High School in Lakewood, Tacoma Community College, and University of Arkansas at Monticello, where she earned her degree in health and physical education. IGNITE program kicks off in support of underrepresented students The IGNITE program launches this fall to help close the achievement gap for vulnerable SPSCC students. Twenty-four students applied for the program, including 5 incoming freshman, and 20 will enter the program. IGNITE students get personalized advising, coaching, and a team of advocates and resources to keep them focused and moving toward their goals. The program is designed specifically to help first generation, low income, and students with disabilities to succeed. Interested in joining IGNITE in 2019?
