ON THE COVER

SPSCC expands health education

Health care jobs are in demand across Washington State Community and technical colleges are a powerful piece of educating the workforce. That’s why SPSCC is making big moves to grow its health care education programs, producing confident and educated graduates for Thurston County and Washington State. In 2018, Thurston County’s number one in-demand occupation was registered nursing, with an average of 214 job postings per month. A look at current employment trends in Thurston County show that government jobs are now rivaled — and will quickly be surpassed — by careers in health care. As the baby boomer generation continues to age over the next 20 years, health care jobs are forecasted to increase significantly. An estimated 37,000 new job openings in Washington State are predicted for health care support professionals between 2016-2026.

SPSCC enrolls 32 new students in its Nursing program each year

Center for Health Education coming in 2021

The college and the SPSCC Foundation recently announced the acquisition of the Louis Walker Middleton building from the Estate of Olympia philanthropist Dr. Angela Bowen. An event on Jan. 16 celebrated Dr. Bowen’s $1.19 million in-kind contribution to the SPSCC Foundation, the largest gift in school history.

SPSCC has designated the 24,000-square-foot building as the Dr. Angela Bowen Center for Health Education. The building will serve as the instructional home for some of SPSCC’s health education programs and become the primary office of the SPSCC Foundation. Estimated completion is fall 2021, allowing SPSCC to expand programs for high-demand fields, like nursing and medical assisting, with the goal of doubling the number of graduating nurses within five years.

Two students awarded at MLK Banquet DEIC renamed in honor of Barbara Clarkson On Saturday, Jan. 19, two SPSCC students were recognized for their success in academics at the 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Banquet. Vanessa Enendu, a first-year nursing student and peer mentor in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Center, and Chante Williams, an aspiring naturopathic doctor, were honored by the Thurston Group of Washington State as successful and involved students and community members, praising their work ethic, values, and contributions to advancing equity in education. Nearly 300 banquet guests also enjoyed a keynote address from Artist & Lecture Series guest speaker Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough of Dillard University in New Orleans, and a dinner prepared by Culinary Arts students.

Student Eliab Cortes wins Transforming Lives Award Eliab Cortes and nominees from community and technical colleges across the state of Washington were honored during the Transforming Lives Awards Dinner on Jan. 21. Chosen among five top nominations put forth by SPSCC staff and faculty, Cortes’s story began when he left a four-year university in California to take care of his grandmother in Lacey, who had been diagnosed with cancer. He had no job, no friends, and no transporation – but his grandmother pushed him into continuing his education. Within a year, Eliab had a car, a steady job, and was attending SPSCC. He’s currently finishing both his Associate in Biology and Associate in Science degrees, hoping to return to a four-year school to pursue a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering.

In Dec. 2018, the SPSCC Board of Trustees passed a unanimous vote to honor the work of retiring trustee A. Barbara Clarkson, a tireless advocate for equity and access to education. To recognize her sincere and impassioned work, a dedication ceremony was held on Feb. 12, renaming the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Center within the Center for Student Success the “A. Barbara Clarkson Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Center”. During Clarkson's 14 years as a member of the Board, the college expanded student access through seven new buildings on the Olympia Campus and by founding the Lacey Campus. Clarkson served as liaison to the SPSCC Foundation, committing her own time and resources to connect the Foundation to the community and create a network devoted to supporting student success. And through her work with the Thurston Group of Washington State, she championed access to higher education for African-American and underrepresented students, sending hundreds of youth from the Pacific Northwest to college with over $8 million in scholarships.

Meet The Chef: Tawni Andrews Twenty years ago, Tawni fell into an accounting profession, but without formal schooling. She was good at it, and it paid the bills, but it wasn’t her passion. After being diagnosed with diabetes, she started flipping her favorite recipes to make them healthier for her lifestyle, and in the process discovered her next career path. As a five-year city councilwoman and two-year city council president of Aberdeen, Tawni is looking to bring healthy change back to her hometown. She says the Culinary Arts program has helped her develop a holistic understanding of the culinary world – both in the kitchen and on the business side. She hopes to work in an established community restaurant or open her own food truck to bring better service and food options to the people of Aberdeen. 7
