First and foremost – how good is it to be back on the water! After several months hiatus, and not being able to sail, I think we are all relieved that sailing has been able to resume, and we are back out on the water doing what we all love. Thank you to all of our sailors for your patience while we have worked hard to revise the sailing calendar, and squeeze in as much sailing as possible for all Divisions. Our first weekend back on the water was on the 11th and 12th of July – it was a weekend jam-packed with sailing activities across all Divisions. On the 11th July, the Evolution Sails 2 Handed Race and a Winter Celebration passage race for the Catamarans were run concurrently. Sunday 12th July saw the Dinghy’s racing in their first race of the Polar Bear Series while the Offshore Division completed their first offshore passage race of their Winter Series. Our sailors were rearing to get back out on the water, as evidenced by the record number of entries we received for the Evolution Sails 2 Handed race! It was wonderful to see so many boats out on the water for the start of this race, and what a fantastic day of racing it was. A massive thank you to Evolution Sails for their ongoing support of this event. And congratulations to Tim Jackman and Marc Hall on Dodgy Vindaloo for taking out overall honours. On 26th July we had our second special event of the 2020/2021 season, the TK Robertson Trophy Race, which was also well represented. We saw a strong field of 21 competitors out on the water with 10 entries into our Seniors Division and 11 entries in the Juniors Division. Congratulations to our overall champions – in the Juniors Division congratulations to Jonah Parry (The Whale) as the Overall Champion for the Tk Robertson Perpetual Trophy (Juniors) and the Seniors Division congratulations to Jack Sherring (Dripping Carbon) as the Overall Champion for the TK Robertson Perpetual Trophy (Seniors). Next up on the special events calendar is the Telemachus Ladies Day Race to be held on Sunday 9th August. Ladies Day was initially scheduled to take place earlier in the year; however, it was one of the casualties of the closure period and unfortunately had to be cancelled. Thankfully it was possible to reschedule the race, and the 9th August will be Telemachus Jewellery’s 29th year of sponsoring this fantastic event. Thankyou to Telman and Telemachus Jewellery for their long-standing support of this great day. Shortly after Ladies Day is the Crab Island Classic on the 22nd August – entries are now open so don’t delay in getting your entries in. The Southport Yacht Club is pleased to again be hosting several other Regattas, and State Titles in 2020 including the OK Dinghy Queensland State Championships, scheduled to be held on the 5th and 6th September and the 2020 Queensland Paper Tiger Catamaran Championships scheduled to take place on the 3rd and 4th October 2020. As many of you are already aware, each of the Divisions met throughout July to vote for their Divisional Reps. I’d like to welcome back Danielle Hutcheson (Offshore Division Rep), Ross Manning (Inshore Division Rep), Ray McMahon (Thursday Twilight Division Rep) and Grace Murphy (Off the Beach Dinghy Division Rep) and welcome Jonathan Simms as the newly elected Off the Beach Catamaran Divisional rep. I look forward to working with each of you in 2020. And finally, could all Skippers please be reminded that your Safety Audit forms are due before 30th September 2020. The full details regarding Safety Audit forms and accredited Auditors can be found on the Australian Sailing website. Once again, it’s wonderful to be back sailing again, and I look forward to seeing you all out on the water.
