Comfort and care from a surgeon who felt like a friend
When a hernia surprised Joseph Rubic, he found the right surgeon right in his hometown at Canonsburg Hospital. First, Dr. Eugene Hammel and his friendly medical team calmed Joe’s worries. Then they used a minimally invasive, laparoscopic approach to repair his hernia. He came home after just four hours with plans for a quick recovery — getting back to baking cookies and making people happy — without any worries at all.

We are experiencing a burst of growth in Southpointe, mostly due to the shale energy industry expansion and trickle down economy. Indirect services such as health, rental, engineering, and restaurants are thriving. New businesses that have moved or opened in Southpointe include Magnum Non Destructive Testing, Silver Creek, Thrasher, Noah Event Center, Salud Express, Kids Kollege Day Care, and Mark Shrader's MMA Academy at Printscape Arena. Steel Cactus has begun remodeling to occupy their new location in Southpointe Town Center. The regional favorite Tex Mex restaurant plans to open this Fall across from Cannon's Rib and Chop House. The Southpointe Chamber has remodeled their office to include network and community rooms equipped with 6 large 4K smart tv's, cameras, and audio. These teleconference meeting rooms can accommodate up to 25 guests and are available for chamber member use. Contact us for availability.

City Mission commemorates the grand opening of the Patriot House, a newly-constructed, transitional residence serving homeless veterans. After receiving an invitation to the July 3 commemoration of the Patriot House, Congressman Connor Lamb and his office arranged for a flag to fly over the White House in honor of City Mission’s new veterans shelter for one full day. At the ceremony, City Mission raised that very same flag to mark the grand opening of the Patriot House, a newly-constructed, transitional residence serving homeless veterans. Comfort and care from a surgeon who felt like a friend Joseph Rubic, 64, of Canonsburg, hadn’t been in the hospital since he was 8 years old and had his tonsils out. He stayed fit and healthy most of his life, through daily exercise and a job that kept him on his feet, -- baking breads and desserts at a local restaurant. When he noticed a little pain in his side he wasn’t worried at first. Then one day there was a lump the size of a golf ball. So he consulted his doctor, Dr. Jeffrey Gretz, who knew at a glance that it was a hernia. He recommended that Joe see Dr. Eugene Hammell, a hernia surgeon specialist at Canonsburg Hospital. A hernia happens when an organ or tissue bulges through a weak spot in the abdomen or groin muscles. By getting care promptly, Joe caught his hernia before it could obstruct blood flow to his intestines and cause more serious problems.
Dr. Hammell was great. I immediately felt like he was a friend, the kind I could take out for a beer.
was literally shaking with nerves, and could barely sign the paperwork. “They knew I was scared but they were very kind and made me feel comfortable,” said Joe. “I was in and out in four hours. I was surprised it was so quick.” Joe benefited from a surgical team at Canonsburg Hospital that has years of experience performing these types of delicate operations. They use state-of-the-art operating suites and the newest medical technology. In addition, many of the doctors and nurses are known to their patients as neighbors, and long-time members of the Canonsburg community. The smaller the incision, the better
Dr. Hammell performed laparoscopic TEP surgery with three small incisions, which lets patients regain their muscle and tissue strength more quickly and decrease their risk of infection. The laparoscope allows him to see inside the body, and insert tools through the small opening.
With a minimally invasive laparoscopic TEP, doctors can also look at both sides of the groin during the procedure. This full view of the injured area helps Dr. Hammell’s patients avoid another hernia. His rate of recurrence is Reassurance at the doctor’s office about one percent, far lower than the national average of Unexperienced with medical issues, Joe was nervous 5 to 15 percent. during his first visit to Dr. Hammell’s office. But his fears quickly passed. During Joe’s surgery, Dr. Hammell reduced the hernia,

“Dr. Hammell was great. I immediately felt like he was a friend, the kind I could take out for a beer,” said Joe. “The entire staff put me at ease.” Dr. Hammell diagnosed that Joe had a double hernia. He said that Joe needed surgery as soon as possible, so they would be happy to fit him in.
placing the contents of the abdomen back into their proper place. He used a mesh liner to reinforce and repair the abdominal wall. “This mesh is very safe and has been used with people for almost 50 years,” Dr. Hammell said. “This operation results in two 1/4-inch incisions and one 3/4-inch incision at the bellybutton,” said Dr. Hammel. Joe’s experience was typical, as the operation takes less than one hour, for a total of about three hours at the hospital. Like Dr. Hammel’s other patients, Joe didn’t need any narcotics, just Tylenol or an anti-inflammatory overthe-counter pain reliever.
“When the nurse called the next “I took it easy, I didn’t want to rip anything,” Joe said day, she said they had an opening in Dr. Hammel’s surgiabout his recovery. “And I was back to work baking cookcal schedule, so I got in within a week,” said Joe. ies in three weeks. Summer Fade Away Party August 2nd, 2018
Scott Snyder, founder of the event explains “The Fade Away was started 4 years ago to create awareness for autism in our community. My son Nathan was diagnosed at 18 months and his sister said that she wished his autism would fade away. This idea motivated me to create an event that marks the end of Summer while increasing awareness of autism and its effect on families." This year proceeds raised from the Fade Away will go to the Autism Caring Center, a local organization that supports families in Southwestern PA”. 14
Last year, over 1000 people attended the event and $25,000 was raised for a local charity.
