City Mission commemorates the grand opening of the Patriot House, a newly-constructed, transitional residence serving homeless veterans. After receiving an invitation to the July 3 commemoration of the Patriot House, Congressman Connor Lamb and his office arranged for a flag to fly over the White House in honor of City Mission’s new veterans shelter for one full day. At the ceremony, City Mission raised that very same flag to mark the grand opening of the Patriot House, a newly-constructed, transitional residence serving homeless veterans. Comfort and care from a surgeon who felt like a friend Joseph Rubic, 64, of Canonsburg, hadn’t been in the hospital since he was 8 years old and had his tonsils out. He stayed fit and healthy most of his life, through daily exercise and a job that kept him on his feet, -- baking breads and desserts at a local restaurant. When he noticed a little pain in his side he wasn’t worried at first. Then one day there was a lump the size of a golf ball. So he consulted his doctor, Dr. Jeffrey Gretz, who knew at a glance that it was a hernia. He recommended that Joe see Dr. Eugene Hammell, a hernia surgeon specialist at Canonsburg Hospital. A hernia happens when an organ or tissue bulges through a weak spot in the abdomen or groin muscles. By getting care promptly, Joe caught his hernia before it could obstruct blood flow to his intestines and cause more serious problems.

was literally shaking with nerves, and could barely sign the paperwork. “They knew I was scared but they were very kind and made me feel comfortable,” said Joe. “I was in and out in four hours. I was surprised it was so quick.” Joe benefited from a surgical team at Canonsburg Hospital that has years of experience performing these types of delicate operations. They use state-of-the-art operating suites and the newest medical technology. In addition, many of the doctors and nurses are known to their patients as neighbors, and long-time members of the Canonsburg community. The smaller the incision, the better

With a minimally invasive laparoscopic TEP, doctors can also look at both sides of the groin during the procedure. This full view of the injured area helps Dr. Hammell’s patients avoid another hernia. Joe’s experience was typical, as the operation takes less than one hour, for a total of about three hours at the hospital. Like Dr. Hammel’s other patients, Joe didn’t need any narcotics, just Tylenol or an anti-inflammatory overthe-counter pain reliever.
