Moving forward pain free is #LivingProof. Karen was an active runner for twenty years. But when arthritis pain in her leg got so bad that a simple walk across the street was unbearable, she got a referral to a hip replacement specialist. The day after surgery, she was up and walking. Today, after completing motion rehab, she’s making strides toward getting back to what she loves. Call (412) DOCTORS or visit AHN.org/ortho.

Long-time runner returns to her workouts with a new hip When Karen Colussi found out that her passion for running was the cause of her joint pain, she turned to expert orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Donald Ravasio. He recommended a hip replacement. After surgery and six weeks of physical therapy, she’s walking easy again, pain free. 20 years of running

Step-by-step through surgery

Scott Hareza, Karen’s personal Diamond Care Navigator, walked her through exactly what to expect. “Scott recommended I get a hip kit. It’s a package of tools, like a long handled scrubby for bathing, because you can’t reach down right away,” Karen said. “He gave me lots of information about my surgery and recovery.”

Karen 52, of Upper St. Clair, loved to run, and had been staying fit with regular workouts since she was 30. While On the day of her surgery, everyone was very nice, Karen exercise was good for her overall health, it also put strain recalled. “I saw Scott and Ravasio right before the surgery.” on her joints. “I was used to being very active, but in the last few years, Dr. Ravasio uses spinal anesthesia, which allows most paI had a lot of pain in my left leg,” she said. “So I gave up tients to have significantly less pain and shorter hospitals running and did less stressful workouts on the elliptical stays. Karen felt much less groggy after surgery than she had expected, which let her begin her post-operative remachine.” habilitation sooner. But soon, Karen found that even walking was painful. “Then it became hard to move at all. I was very stiff and The staff helped her stand up the same day, and before my legs hurt all the time,” she said. “My PCP took x-rays she left the hospital a day later, she had taken her first steps with her new hip. and found arthritis.” She took her prescription pain medications for about a week, and then switched to Tylenol. Consulting an orthopaedic expert She went to see Dr. Ravasio at Canonsburg Hospital, part of Allegheny Health Network (AHN). He specializes in total knee, hip, and shoulder replacement, sports medicine, trauma and fracture work, and ACL reconstructions. Initially, Dr. Ravasio gave her Cortisone shots, which worked well, but grew less effective over time.

Getting back to the life she loves

Looking back, surgery was the best decision I could have made.

She soon moved on to outpatient physical therapy to build up her strength, range of motion, and flexibility.

“By the end of the year, I knew I was facing hip replacement and I wasn’t thrilled,” said Karen. She feared the surgery, and dreaded a long period of recovery. But Dr. Ravasio and his physician assistant, William Hall, were encouraging. They scheduled the surgery for January 2018. “Looking back, it was the best decision I could have made. If I knew it was that easy, I would have gotten it years ago,” she said. “Everyone in Dr. Ravasio’s office was great.”

Within a week, she was walking again, mobile and painfree. For two weeks an AHN therapist came to Karen’s home. “Soon I was walking outside with the walker, and even doing five minutes on the elliptical along with her leg lifts,” she said.

About 3 weeks after surgery, Karen was back at work as a computer systems administrator for the Allegheny County Police. Today, she continues her exercises at home. “I don’t get stiff anymore when I sit. I can walk without pain, just a tiny limp. I can wear heels again!” Karen said. She has returned to her workouts and noticed that her energy level is higher, now that it isn’t constantly sapped by pain. “I feel so much better,” she said.

Issue 0518

The Southpointe Golf Club offers a first-class member and guest experience in a refined, yet casual atmosphere. The club has been a staple of the Southpointe Business park from the beginning and first opened its doors on June 25, 1994. They offer a firstclass member and guest experience at a reasonable cost and are also a hot destination for weddings and corporate events.

Inside the Southpointe Golf Club The Southpointe Golf Club is conveniently located on 589 rolling acres off exit 48 of 1-79 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Because of its quick highway access, there are only two traffic light separating you from Pittsburgh's Central Business District and Pittsburgh International Airport making the club a hot location for both corporate and private events. The eighteen-hole championship golf course, designed by renowned course architect Arthur Hills, features 6,856 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 72.9 and it has a slope rating of 135. Each hole provides a unique experience. The course wraps throughout the Southpointe business park and housing community giving you spectacular views of water falls, streams, foliage, and various corporate headquarters throughout. "Hole number 15 is my favorite as it requires a lot of discipline. It is very tempting to want to cut the corner over the bunkers off the tee, but the play is to hit it down the middle and set yourself up with a smooth short iron to the green. 18 is a close second. Your last hole of the day and it requires your best tee shot and most precise approach shot. The green isn’t the easiest to read either. Par is a good score to finish your round." - Matt Denesha, Head Golf Pro at Southpointe Golf Club

The club's golf offerings to members also include lessons, leagues for men and women, and state-of-the-art heated outdoor hitting bays. The hitting bays are cleverly incorporated within the clubhouse where you are able to practice hitting balls during the winter months. Golf programs are lead by Head Golf Pro Matt Denesha who came to Southpointe from the Oakmont Country Club. 16
