LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO
A YEAR OF MEANINGFUL COLLABORATIONS
“Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” These words spoken by Henry Ford, and the notion of working together or ‘collaborating’, resonate with me as I reflect on Southminster’s new mission statement which emphasizes the importance of being a caring and collaborative community to enrich the lives of those we serve.
Collaboration is a wonderful way to describe Southminster’s philanthropic work, which was reflected in so many ways during our fiscal year 2022.
COLLABORATION IN ACTION
THIS GIVING REPORT is filled with examples of Southminster’s collaboration in action. During our fiscal year, we solidified co-branded collaborations with The Ivey and Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte, working towards enhancing and expanding access to programs and services related to brain health, respite care, life-long learning, free transportation, and free tax and Medicare counseling for seniors across our region.
In 2022 we welcomed the addition of Memory and Movement and the expertise of Dr. Chuck Edwards and his colleagues to our campus. This compliments our values of excellence, compassion, and well-being while providing another access point for those living on our campus and in our region who seek care related to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and related conditions. Our Southminster Patient Scholarship with Memory and Movement helps to eliminate financial barriers for families and loved ones and seeks to improve and expand access for those most in need.
With COVID-19 restrictions lifted we were overjoyed to bring back our intergenerational reading program with our young students from the Greater Enrichment Program in 2022! We are looking forward to continuing this exceptional collaboration and many others into 2023 and beyond.
Our 2022 Giving Report underscores the impact we have when we work with like-minded organizations in Charlotte to help address gaps and barriers that impact individuals of all ages, especially seniors and those that care for them.
Thank you for your support in helping us to give, grow, and serve Southminster and the greater Charlotte Mecklenburg community.
With gratitude,
Ben Gilchrist | President/CEO
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Our Capital Campaign Committee wrapped up its fundraising efforts in 2022. Under the leadership of Campaign Chairman and resident Dick Brigden, the committee raised $3 million towards alleviating debt associated with our new health center.
The work of the campaign accelerated the progress outlined in our new strategic plan related to managing our debt obligations over the next three to five years. A heartfelt thanks to the entire Capital Campaign committee and all who contributed to this successful effort!
EMPLOYEE HOLIDAY FUND
We wrap up each year with a demonstration of community and compassion with another successful fundraising effort by our volunteer committee of residents led by Biff Bracy, who collaboratively work to raise funds in appreciation of our hourly employees. This tremendous example of caring for one another enriches the lives of everyone here at Southminster. Thank you!
RESIDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
During our fiscal year 2022, Southminster provided close to $700,000 in resident financial assistance. This outward demonstration of compassion and holistically caring for one another are values that have been part of Southminster since its inception thirty-six years ago. A sincere thank you to all our donors who continue to support our annual efforts to keep this valuable program accessible for our residents in need.
COMMUNITY COLLABORATION
For over eight years we have made intentional efforts to develop well-formed and trusting relationships with like-minded non-profits in our region. These organizations share in our values of community, excellence, compassion, well-being, and doing the right thing.
Years of working to develop these relationships have resulted in collaborative work on shared objectives that have a direct impact on our residents, staff, and the greater Charlotte community.
COLLABORATIVE PARTNERS
THE IVEY
In 2022, Southminster and The Ivey formed a collaboration to improve and expand programs and services for seniors and caregivers in the Charlotte region.
The mutually beneficial relationship between these two non-profits is intended to enhance efficiencies for The Ivey and fulfill Southminster’s increasing community benefit objectives, with a long-range goal of establishing a premier respite club and community brain health and wellness center.
“When participants leave the Brain Health Workshops, I hope they look back on their experience with great joy, enthusiasm, and hope for what lies ahead for each of them,” said Ben Gilchrist, President and CEO at Southminster.
THE SHEPHERD’S CENTER OF CHARLOTTE
Ben Gilchrist
Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte redefines and restructures the way aging is approached. As a nonprofit interfaith organization, it offers a variety of programs and services, ranging from social activities to free transportation, free Medicare consulting, and free tax assistance services. Southminster is looking forward to collaborating with the Shepherd’s Center to expand its core programs and services to reach more seniors in our region.
Research shows a great need for collaborations among organizations dedicated to supporting the challenges of an aging America. A report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) points out that nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered socially isolated.
“Seniors who are socially isolated are at greater risk of being depressed and developing chronic diseases,” said Southminster President and CEO Ben Gilchrist. “We are particularly proud of this opportunity to collaborate with an insightful organization, known for decades worth of work in lifelong learning for seniors in our community.”
Alissa Celek, Director of The Shepherd’s Center of Charlotte says. “Together we will better support the senior community through access to resources, lifelong learning, and fellowship.”

MEMORY AND MOVEMENT CHARLOTTE
Since 2015 Southminster has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Dr. Chuck Edwards and his team at Memory and Movement Charlotte.
In 2022, Southminster’s Embrace Clinic launched Memory and Movement’s first satellite clinic. “Partnering with another non-profit in this manner means people experiencing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and related conditions now have another way to access the best in diagnosis, treatment, support, and education that our region has to offer,” says Tracy McGinnis, VP Philanthropy & Strategic Initiatives at Southminster.
Recognizing the barriers that some patients and caregivers face when attempting to access quality care in our region, Southminster worked with Memory and Movement to establish the Southminster Patient Scholarship. The scholarship assists families who struggle to afford the cost of clinical services. Dealing with a progressive memory or movement condition is incredibly difficult, and the scholarship fund relieves the additional stress of financial concerns.
In the calendar year 2022, 68 patients received full or partial scholarships. Since September clinical fees were waived for patients who do not have sufficient insurance coverage and fees were waived for patients who entered hospice. Physicians waived annual fees for an additional 62 patients, many of whom have significant financial needs but were unable to complete a scholarship application.
“We are committed to treating every family in need of our services, regardless of their ability to pay,” said Dr. Charles Edwards II, M.D., Founding Physician at Memory & Movement Charlotte. “Scholarship support makes it possible for us to keep that promise in a way that is financially sustainable. We are deeply grateful to Southminster for their critical role in helping us meet the increasing demand for compassionate, comprehensive care.”

SUMMARY OF SOUTHMINSTER’S CHARITABLE ACCOUNTABILITY
Southminster’s Offices of Finance and Philanthropy work together throughout the fiscal year to meet the organization’s charitable goal of allocating 5% of its annual income from resident revenue to support residents in need of financial assistance, as well as direct and in-direct charitable support to non-profit organizations in our community.
Since its inception, Southminster has provided over $13 million in resident financial support and over $3 million in direct spending has been dispersed over the last six years to support charitable initiatives in Charlotte Mecklenburg among three areas of philanthropic focus.
Between October 2021 and September 2022, the following organizations received funding from Southminster to support initiatives related to education, healthy communities, and cultural arts. Requests for funding are reviewed on a quarterly basis and presented to Southminster’s Philanthropy Committee and Board of Directors.
