MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR LIFE
The Challenge: It is believed that the U.S. has aproximately 53 million caregivers, with predictions indicating an increase in this number over the upcoming years. Despite these overwhelming numbers, there remains a lack of accessible, coordinated programs for caregivers.
The Partnership: The collaboration between Southminster, UNC Charlotte, and their partners to establish the Caregiver TLC initiative not only advances research in aging services but enhances the lives of caregivers through a no-cost, accessible, evidenced-based program designed for those caring for a loved one with a chronic condition or memory impairment.
Research with Results: Results published in the Clinical Gerontologist report the Caregiver TLC program significantly reduces depressive levels and boosts confidence among caregivers who participated in the psychoeducational program. Caregivers also reported significant reductions in burden and anxiety as well as improvement in perceived positive aspects of caregiving. The efficacy of the program is evident across caregivers of diverse racial backgrounds and those caring for individuals with chronic or neurocognitive disorders like dementia.
Call to Action: Recognizing the diversity of caregivers across the nation, the program is currently being translated and culturally adapted for Latinos and Spanish speakers by UNC Charlotte in collaboration with colleagues in the U.S.
The Opportunity: As an evidenced-based program, Caregiver TLC is now poised to expand nationwide, creating a supportive network of professionals and caregivers united in their mission to improve the lives of millions caring for loved ones.
Join an Award-Winning Program: Organizations looking to incorporate the Caregiver TLC program into their services are encouraged to visit www.caregivertlc.org. Additionally, caregivers seeking to join a group can reach out to tmcginnis@southminster.org. Caregiver TLC is recognized by the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging Best Practice Caregiving Programs and is the recipient of the 2024 LeadingAge North Carolina 2024 Excellence in Community Service Award.
