Sports complex projects a challenge By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Town leaders remain hopeful about a sports complex considered for a 112-acre West Street property, although there’s no public progress yet. A plan for a sports complex off the Berlin Turnpike in Berlin was abandoned, al-

though it’s unclear if that’s a boost to Southington’s efforts. Developer Lee Dibble had an option to buy the parcel from the Sepko family, but that expired and the property was listed. He declined to comment on efforts to bring the sports complex project to fruition. The plan includes covered playing

fields, a restaurant and retail space. The land at the corner of West and West Queen streets is listed for $7.8 million. The town invested $40,000 in engineering and planning work on conceptual zoning approval that could See Complex, A9

An education agricultural group headed by local farmer Mark Ramsay got a $35,000 grant to expand youth programs. Students attend Lewis Education Agricultural Farm to learn how food is grown. “Food is pretty important and a lot of youth today don’t understand where food comes from. They think food comes from a supermarket,” Ramsay said. “There’s a lot that goes into producing food, healthy food.” He’s hoping to expand programs, add a greenhouse and start a pollinator program that stresses the importance of bees.

Museum leaders hope to add grant-funded position

Kristi Sadowski, library and Barnes Museum executive director, expects to hear about the application in September. In the meantime, she’s working to improve the grounds of the historic home on North Main Street and gather volunteer docents who can provide tours. More volunteers will allow the museum’s two curators, one of whom is part-time, to focus on tasks that currently take a back seat to guiding visitors through the Barnes family house. They’re now often occupied with giving tours. The grant requires matching funds from the town, Sadowski said, but those funds can take the form of volunteer hours. She’ll use the docent’s hours to meet the grant requirements but can’t start the volunteers until she hears about the grant. If the town doesn’t get the money, those volunteers will still help the museum by handling tours.

The Town Council approved for Sadowski to apply for the grant in December. Three councilors voted against the grant application, saying the funds for a part-time, twoyear position would open the door to adding another town employee.

Eagle Scouts have helped improve the grounds as well. Sadowski said there is a wedding photography shoot booked. Attracting such events would be a job of the program coordinator.

“We won’t necessarily have the same level of programming and outreach we’re hoping for,” Sadowski said. “(We’ve discussed) if we don’t get the grant, what could we do with the staffing that we have?” jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

Councilors wanted to see the museum generate more revenue and suggested improvements that would allow it to host wedding ceremonies and photography shoots. Sadowski isn’t sure of the grant status but knows that the town is still in the running. Even without the program coordinator, there’ll be changes in the fall.

“Either way, we can get started with (docents) in the fall,” Sadowski said.

There are already efforts to improve the grounds and attract paying events. Friends of the Barnes Museum board president Brenda Wooding said the group spent $2,000 to replace rotted wood columns on the gazebo and are looking for bids to paint the structure as well. Using old photographs, the column styles and paint will match the original.

Museum leaders also want to make repairs to the veranda roof and railings. Wooding said the project is too large for the friends group but said Sadowski will look for grants to help fund the work.

Barnes Museum leaders are planning for expanded services, more tours and better collection cataloguing while waiting to hear the results of a grant application that will fund a part-time position.

The Stepping Forward in Grief Study tests two evidence-based online/app programs created by scientists and clinicians at Uniformed Services University and Columbia University to address grief-related challenges. These programs were developed in re-

sponse to earlier research suggesting that grief-related challenges can occur among bereaved military survivors, even many years following a loss, and that many surviving loved ones desire additional support. The study is now open to close friends and family

members of those who died before or after Sept. 11, 2001 while serving in the military or as a result of their military service. For more information, contact info@steppingforwardstudy.org or visit steppingforwardstudy.org.

Local probate judge prepares to re-enact D-Day By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

A Cheshire man will join about 600 others in France next month to re-enact the paratrooper landing during the D-Day invasion of World War II while another Cheshire resident is helping coordinate the vintage planes that will make the drop. June 6 marks the 75th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. Matt Jalowiec, CheshireSouthington probate judge, has been making parachute drops out of C-47 planes as part of the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team for several years. He’ll fly to France on June 1 and join hundreds of other Americans and Europeans for the drop near Sainte Marie du Mont, the first French town liberated by the 101st Airborne Division in 1944. Jerry O’Neill, a pilot who’s managed air shows, is coor-

dinating the maintenance, fueling, training and preparation for 11 C-47 or similar DC-3 planes and crews that will fly to France Sunday. The drop will take place on June 7, a day after the actual anniversary to accommodate President Donald Trump’s visit to France as well as local celebrations. Jalowiec and O’Neill said the effort is a major investment of time and money on the part of volunteers and vintage airplane owners, but important to honoring and remembering the sacrifice of World War II soldiers. Veterans, including C-47 pilots from Connecticut, will also travel to France for the demonstration. “It’s a big number,” O’Neill said of the 75th anniversary. “The veterans who can attend and be honored, they’re fewer and fewer.” Jalowiec said there’s a “moral obligation” to preserve the stories of veterans

Scotland. Among the planes heading for France is the C-47 named “That’s All Brother,” which was saved from a scrap yard and fully restored at a cost of $6 million recently. It was the lead plane on D-Day and will again lead the formation next month. Jalowiec jumped from the plane earlier this year in preparation for France. He compared it to a brand new car. “When you close the door, it’s solid,” he said. With other restored planes “you hear everything rattle and move. You’re usually pretty excited to get out of the plane.”

Extra four seconds

The higher altitude adds about four seconds after the main chute is supposed to deploy, Jalowiec said. “That’s why it’s important to have those extra four seconds,” he said. “That’s why I park the planes” rather than jump, O’Neill said, laughing. Training for the jump with multiple planes dropping dozens of men in Oklahoma was like a movie, Jalowiec said. He’s looking forward to France and is careful to avoid any injury that would disqualify him. “I get nervous walking down the stairs. You sprain your ankle and you’re done,” Jalowiec said.

As a concession to safety, June’s drop will be made at 1,200 to 1,500 feet. That gives parachutists enough time to deploy a reserve parachute if the main one doesn’t work.

O’Neill said sponsors have helped defray some of the cost of fuel, oil and maintenance for pilots. Much of the cost of readying the C-47s for a trans-Atlantic flight is borne by the owners, though.

COMMENTARY

Lots of help available for those in need By Terry Sutton

Last week while walking in downtown Hartford I saw a slightly disheveled woman in her 30s reaching into an enclosed recycle bin. I asked her if she was looking for bottles and cans. In a desperate voice, she explained that she needed the cans for money to buy her baby infant formula. There

was a child in a baby carrier on top of a small shopping cart she was using. I mentioned that I had a bunch of small plastic bags of returnable cans and bot-

tles in my car and so we headed that way. As my stash would’ve taken up her whole shopping cart, I grabbed the overflow bags and walked with her until some friends of hers showed up and took the rest off my hands.

cans. They all thanked me and didn’t ask me for any money. I wished them luck and walked away as I made my way downtown to a gallery show.

As I proceeded to my destination, I wondered how five or six dollars of bottles/cans One of those friends exwas a goldmine. I thought pressed joy for the woman about it some more and – “she hit the goldmine” with came to the sad realization all the free bottles and that when you are in need of

life sustaining food any small amount of money can be a goldmine. I was puzzled as to why her child could not get infant formula, forcing this woman to go through garbage cans and risk her health and that of her baby. Keep the name; it’s local color What’s in a school name? Well, quite a bit. There’s a movement afoot to change the name of one of Southington’s elementary schools in order to honor the late Zaya Oshana Sr. for his long and distinguished career in local education. Sounds like a fine idea. Except that lots of people would prefer to keep the names those schools have held for years, even generations: Flanders, South End, Plantsville. This not mere nostalgia

This is more poignant when a school that’s about to be renamed was originally named for the village or borough or district it serves. A suggestion can be offered: Why not simply add the honoree’s name to the existing name of the school? Make it Zaya Oshana Sr. Flanders School, or Zaya Oshana Sr. South End School, or Zaya Oshana Sr. Plantsville School. Another suggestion would be to simply find another way to give Oshana the honor he deserves.

an’s situation, there is public help available for her and her child. “It is always better to refer someone in need to an agency,” Mellon says. “The woman you were talking about had a small infant and could not afford formula. The WIC (Women Infants and Children) program, which is national program, provides formula for infants up to one year of age and longer, if the need is documented. If the woman did not know about this program, she will have a hard time providing formula for many months. If she went to the WIC office, they would have referred her to the local food pantry, SNAP (food stamps), HUSKY (insurance) and the local community service office.” While this woman was in Hartford, which has a high and very visible poverty rate, it’s the suburbs where such need is often hidden and invisible. According to the website city-data.com, in 2016, 3.8 percent of Southington’s population lived below the poverty line. For residents living 50 percent below the poverty line, that number was 1.6 percent. While these numbers are much better than the state level of 9.8 and 4.5 percent respectively, in a town with a population of over 40,000, that means Southington has over 1,000 people living in poverty. These people may be your neighbors, co-workers and even family members. Despite this, Janet Mellon emphasizes that the town has done a good job in handling the problem.

Malloy’s program to end homelessness in Connecticut,” Mellon says. “We were able to house all 16 chronically homeless people in our town. All veterans who are homeless have a shelter available to them. All other homeless individuals or families need to contact 211 to get in the system for assistance. There will always be some homelessness in most towns, but I believe in Southington a small percentage exists.”

The bottom line here is that there are many ways we can help out those who are struggling (donate or volunteer ) and there’s plenty of help to be found, if you know where to look. If you, a family member or someone you know in Southington need assistance, the following agencies and organizations can help: Arc of Southington, 860-6289220 Bread For Life, 860-276-8389 Center for Healthy Aging, 877-424-4641 Margaret Griffin Child Development Center, 860-6215885 Prudence Crandall Center, 860-225-5187 Southington Housing Authority, 860-628-5200 Southington United Way, 860-628-4565 WIC, 860-585-3977

BRISTOL — Renee Hamulak of Shelton lifted her dachshund named Belle up to her chest in sheer joy. Belle most certainly didn't win the race in which she was running.

The Citizen will print only one letter per person each month.

Among a heat of about five stubbed legged contenders, Belle finished … well, it doesn't really matter. “It took her six tries but she crossed finally,” Hamulak said.

Letters should be approximately 300 words. We reserve the right to edit letters.

For the past few years Hamulak has joined the state’s dachshund lovers at Dachshunds and their owners competed Saturday at Lake Compounce in the Steven Scarpa, for the Record-Journal. the 6th annual “Wiener Dog 100” held annual “Pink’s Wiener Dog 100.” at Lake Compounce amusement park up. Manny Martinez of Bridgeport had his dog Toi in the final heat. Toi and her fellow wiener dog friend Teeniy were the fashion plates of the race, arriving in a small replica of the iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Teeniy wore a lovely polka dot blue dress. Toi, after his race, wore a striped shirt with green trim and a smart blue hat emblazoned with bones. He was sitting pretty. “He’s won it a couple of times. He just likes to run,” said Martinez, who noted that one of the wins came after back surgery. The final race between Toi and two opponents, Flash and Ruby, came down to an extremely close finish, probably by a nose, so to speak. “Heads are huddled. Video is being reviewed. It took them 22 minutes at the (Kentucky) Derby, so we are still ahead of the game,” STAR 99.9 radio personality Jay Raven told the crowd. When the dust cleared, Flash

RHEANNA HASTINGS

BRIAN CARABETTA

A veteran staple of the Platt girls tennis program, Rheanna Hastings returned to the No. 2 singles slot this spring for her final season and compiled a record of 10-7. The senior co-captain could claim some city bragging rights. She won both of her matches against Wilcox Tech and both of her matches against Maloney, including a 6-2, 6-4 straight-setter against the Spartans’s Alissa Hoffman in last Wednesday’s season finale.

The CTC Tournament did not end the way the Wilcox Tech baseball wanted. For a second straight year, the Indians were denied by Cheney Tech in the finals. But what a ride for the 16-7 Tribe, and Brian Carabetta was a big part of it. The senior threw a five-hitter in the 8-0 quarterfinal shutout of Norwich Tech. He tripled and scored and tagged a two-run double in the 5-4 semifinal win over Platt Tech, then tripled again in the 14-6 championship loss to Cheney.

MYCHAEL GALLAHER

BRETT HUNTER

Mychael Gallaher commanded the Athlete of the Week spotlight during the indoor track season when she set the Maloney girls record in the 55 meters at 7.79 seconds. The senior returns here in the outdoor season after winning the javelin at 98 feet at the CCC South championship meet. Gallaher threw for 111-5 earlier this year at the R-J Invitational, a season-best distance that gave her the No. 1 seed heading into Tuesday’s Class L state championship meet.

Senior Brett Hunter saved one of his biggest matches for Southington boys volleyball’s biggest opponents (so far) this season: reigning Class M champ Newington. The middle blocker drove home nine kills and piled up a remarkable seven blocks in Southington’s 3-2 win over the Indians that closed out the regular season. Hunter and the 22-0 Blue Knights later beat Newington in the CCC Tournament final and take the No. 1 seed into the Class L state tournament.

EMMA WATKINSON

ANTHONY LUPO

At the end of the year, the R-J likes to tip the Athlete of the Week cap to multi-sport athletes whose contributions span the seasons. Greetings, Emma Watkinson. The junior is a setter in volleyball, 5-foot-10 guard in basketball and first baseman in softball. Watkinson slugged four home runs this spring, including two in one game vs. Sheehan, and drove in the game-winning run in the SCC semifinals against Amity during Cheshire’s march to the crown.

Sheehan boys lacrosse heads into its Class S state tournament opener Wednesday against Waterford holding the No. 4 seed and a record of 12-4. That’s the best regular-season record the Titans have had in their six-year history and it has them making a third straight postseason appearance. One senior who been aboard for all those achievements is Anthony Lupo. He had a hat trick as the Titans reached the 10-win plateau and he’ll continue playing at St. Joseph.

Biking From A38

Returnees may notice some new and revamped trails done by DirtSculpt, a company that specializes in bike trails. This time of year, the park’s trail team are working to restore the six trails after the winter. “Bringing DirtSculpt in is a huge step forward for us,”

Newth said. “... they have the resources to build things more efficiently and quicker.”

what we're trying to do is open it up to the general public – young kids, even adults.”

The team recommends beginners learn basic techniques from coaches on site before moving to some of the easier trails.

The park has been refocusing on beginner bikers in an effort to attract more to the sport.

Hayes started biking at age 50 and has since made it successfully down all their trails.

“Downhill mountain biking is a sport that's gaining ground nationwide, but it is still a very exclusive club,” said Powder Ridge owner Sean Hayes.“… so

The park allows for the extreme sensations of going downhill without pedaling uphill because the park has a working lift service, he said.

“A lot of times when people are new they try to fight the bike instead of letting the bike do the work,” Newth said. “It’s like going skiing

“As long as you've ridden a bike before, we can take you from beginner through the learning center with our coaches ... we will teach you how to downhill mountain bike,” Hayes said. Newth, a Vermont resident living in the state for the summer, started biking at age 8 when his father took him to a nearby BMX track. He has since traveled See Biking, A41
