Climber takes on Ragged Mountain Billehus moved to Connecticut two weeks ago from Minnesota and one of the things he wanted to do was mountain climb.
By Pete Paguaga Record-Journal staff
Hanging about 20 feet off the ground and staring up the steep cliff face of Ragged Mountain, Tyler Billehus was at a standstill. The first-time climber didn’t know what to do next. “That was tough, it kind of got in my head a little bit and I started to think too much about it and froze up,” he said. “After I got past that point it was pretty fun.”
The 29-year-old Hamden resident searched online and found Paul Maresca of the Connecticut Climbers & Mountaineers group, and a scheduled climb of one of the most popular climbing destinations in Connecticut — Ragged Mountain. “Some people do it for the excitement some people do it for the atmosphere,” Maresca said.

The police department licenses billiard tables, pinball machines and games of chance, but the reasons for the long-standing requirement aren’t clear. Police sent out a reminder recently that those licenses must be renewed by June 30. In a statement, Sgt. Jeff Dobratz said failure to renew a license is a violation of town ordinances. Sal Conti, owner of Shooters Billiards and Arcade, 50 Spring St., said he’s been paying a $200 flat fee for his license every year for 22 years. He stops by the police department to pay and shortly afterward a police officer delivers the license at Shooters. “It’s a pretty simple process,” Conti said. The fee isn’t a financial burden and by now he’s used to See License, A6

Local author is ‘a different kind of mom’ By Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff
While Oprah Winfrey popularized the “aha” moment, local author Jessica Kastner might just originate the “uh-oh” moment. Kastner, a fourth-generation Southington resident, wrote a book about raising her three sons — 16-yearold Jack, 9-year-old Eli and 7-year-old Kenai — while maintaining a household, a marriage and a Christian faith. “Hiding From The Kids In My Prayer Closet” will be released Saturday by Christian publisher David C Cook. She said the goal of writing the book was to put forth “something real, a true-tolife experience,” like hoisting a screaming child up the stairs to day care, or panicking as a last-minute school assignment was due.
Reading books as a new mom, she said, “everything was comforting and encouraging, but a lot of times in motherhood, I felt, is this how it is for everybody? This is craziness.” On a recent visit, it was calm at Kastner’s adobe house. All the activity was outside as her sons and a couple friends played on the trampoline before the family headed to the pool for the afternoon. “I wanted to capture the normal, everyday things, like Cub Scouts, or moms’ groups, or school, and really say what it really feels like,” she said. “Because I would always feel like, am I doing something wrong? I just felt like I was a different kind of mom.”

Praline’s. She has raised her kids two ways, as a working single mom and with a partner. Married for most of the book, she’s divorced now and it’s the help going to kids’ events or getting ready for work she misses most.
Readers might recognize some of the places in the book that she visited, like the First Congregational Church mothers’ group, or relate to shopping for deals at Savers.
“As years go on and I meet similar-spirited moms, I wanted to write a book capturing all the things we talk about,” Kastner said. “Especially in the Christian realm, if we’re saying bad things, But it’s Southington’s comit means we’re ungrateful munity resources that helped or complaining, but I think her the most. there’s so much comfort and She said she appreciates “ev- strength drawn when people share how they really feel.” erything” about the town, such as the parks. There’s no inspection of machines, although he said it’s probably worthwhile for the police department to know what’s going on in local businesses. The law may have been put into place during Prohibition or as a means to thwart vice at pool halls. “What was important 60 or 70 years ago probably isn’t the least bit now,” Conti said. “I believe it is an extremely old ordinance.” Conti has tried to create a family-friendly atmosphere at his business, even turning down Keno.

Retro gas station keeps the old ways alive By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff
retro gas station is the “ding” of the ground hose letting the attendant know a customer is looking to fuel up.
The only thing missing in this “I actually took it out,” Brett Palumbo, owner of Palumbo
Phillips 66, at 828 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, said of the bell. “I want (the attendants) to watch and pay attention.” Palumbo runs a full-service

gas station and repair shop reminiscent of the 1950s when his dad Al Palumbo opened it. Given the hundreds of loyal customers who come by for gas, a chat, or to inflate their tires, Brett Palumbo said he isn’t about to make any changes. “It’s wonderful,” he said about the steady stream of customers. “It’s tough to make ends meet, but we have a lot of elderly people who can’t pump themselves, or, people who are dressed up and don’t want to smell like gasoline.” Palumbo said he has some customers who don’t even know how to pump gas. “I have customers who beg me not to change,” he said. Dale Cuomo, of Cheshire, knows how to pump her own gas.

Palumbo calls the gas portion of his business “pennies on the dollar” and said his service shop provides more revenue. Even the station’s interior is a throwback. Instead of a snack counter or coffee bar and beverage refrigeration cases, Palumbo sits at a desk surrounded by retro gas pumps, an antique snack machine, and other reminders of the 1950s and 1960s. There are only six Phillips 66 stations in Connecticut, Palumbo said, and Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike was considered Route 66 before Interstate 691 opened.
“But do I want to? No,” Cuomo said. “I’ve been coming here for years. They are friendly, helpful and it’s full service.”
“This used to be the way to the beach,” Palumbo said. “The only thing we don’t do is squirt the windows.”
The fuel price isn’t any higher than other stations despite the two-full time workers and two part-time employees. Austin Dellavecchia has worked at the station for a year and said he enjoys chatting with customers.
“Always a friendly face,” Lovley said. “And I don’t have to get out of the truck.”
Dennis Lovley , a longtime customer, said he enjoys the service.

4,000+ tickets issued over holiday weekend
From A1
Part of the Metacomet Ridge in Southington and Berlin, Ragged Mountain is known nationally among climbers. The area is managed by the non-profit Ragged Mountain Foundation, “originally formed by a group of concerned hikers and climbers who wanted to ensure proper stewardship of Ragged Mountain,” according to the group’s website. The foundation owns 56 acres of land in Southington governed by a conservation deed held by the Berlin Land Trust.
State police charged 60 motorists with driving under the influence and cited more than 4,000 for speeding and hazardous moving violations over the Fourth of July holiday. From Friday morning, June 30, to Tuesday night, July 4, state police cited 1,368 motorists for speeding and 2,941 motorists for hazardous moving violations, including unsafe lane changes, following too closely and using a cell phone while driving. Authorities also investigated 398 accidents, 50 of which had reported injuries and one of which was fatal. In 2016, state police charged 39 motorists with driving under the influence, cited 1,227 for speeding and 2,913 for hazardous moving violations, and investigated 315 accidents.
Ragged Mountain’s appeal is its varied terrain, with paths suitable for all skill levels, from expert to beginner, according to climbers.

Billehus said he got into climbing at an indoor climbing gym. “I taught for a year in Minnesota and I had the summer off and I went to the gym a few times and I liked it,” he said. “When I moved out to Connecticut I told myself that I would start climbing outside.”
A former Southington resident was arrested after 48 images of suspected child pornography were found in a garage on Woodruff Street.

If you don’t believe Maresca, Billehus backs it up. “It’s not as scary as it looks,” he said. “If you find people with good experience that are good...you’ll have a lot of fun.”

From April to October, the group mainly stays on the mountains. During the winter, some ice climb and back country ski. A small group sky dive from time to time.
Some weeks they will have anywhere from five to 15 people joining them, ranging from rookies like Billehus to climbers with over 30 years of experience. Maresca, a Terryville resident, started climbing 28 years ago. He has climbed all over the world, and says there is nothing better then when you get to the top of a climb.

APPLESEED
Nurse’s dedication, skill recognized for the needs of her patients while comforting the concerns of their families.”
By Dick Fortunato Special to The Citizen
SCC Executive Director William Kowalewski said, “As Mary enters retirement, we all know that the care center is a much better place as a result of the many purposeful years she worked here.”
In May, virtually on the heels of her retirement on Dec. 1, 2016, from a career of more than 27 years as registered nurse at Southington Care Center, Mary Celella received the distinguished Connecticut Services Award of Excellence.
Kowalewski said the nomination for the LeadingAge Award of Excellence was based on the theme: Power of Purpose.
“I loved patient care – the hands-on relationships you build. I knew, even as a child, I wanted to become a nurse,” Celella said.
In his nomination, he wrote: “Mary’s purpose in life was to care for the elderly in a way deserved by all she cares for and that would keep her out of the limelight. She serves humbly and without any expectation of recognition. Her footprint will remain with the care center for many years to come.”
A lifelong resident of Southington, Celella has been a nurse for more than 30 years. In March 1990, upon learning of the impending opening of SCC as a new skilled care nursing facility at 45 Meriden Ave., she applied for and was promptly accepted for a nursing position. From that exciting moment in her life, Celella was to begin a rewarding career of doing what she loved, quietly filling her passion to serve each patient. Staff members, supervisors and former patients who came to know Celella offered their perspective at Celella’s retirement party Nov. 29. “Mary is a consummate professional,” said a lifelong friend, adding, “Mary always

Adding to these accolades, I have known Mary Celella for many years through her active presence in the community. But I had no professional contact with her until a year ago when I was a rehab patient at SCC for a month. Her vast experience was immediately apparent to me. She was totally at ease in discussing my health issues with me with impressive clarity, genuine authority and an uplifting natural caring warmth.

LeadingAge Connecticut describes itself as a partner in a national association of 6,000 not for profit organizations dedicated to expanding the world of possibilities for the aging. Together, the organizations advance policies, promote practices and conduct research that supports, enables and empowers people to live fully as they age. No stranger to the community’s needs, Celella is an active member of the Board of the Joe and Kaye Calvanese Foundation, a not for profit 501 (c) 3 that has raised funds for local charitable needs in Southington for more than 20 years. Celella also was recognized professionally in May 2012 with the Nightingale Award of Hartford HealthCare Senior Services. Celella embraces the change in her life as her purpose shifts to spending more time with her husband, Gary, and their children, Gary, Katie and Patricia, and the excitement of helping her daughter with her grandchild while awaiting the arrival of a second baby any day now. Opting to foreclose is a ‘rare’ decision The town could have opted to foreclose on a Mount Vernon Road property recently sold at tax auction to a developer, but attorneys say the 23-acre parcel likely still would have gone to auction. Some town councilors asked whether the town could have done more to acquire the land, at 1636 Mount Vernon Road, for open space. Local developer and business owner Frank Fragola put in the winning bid of $290,000 during an auction this spring. The town bid fell about $100,000 short. Property owner Edward Szpak owes $114,018 in taxes and fees dating back to 2005.
More commonly, debts don’t exceed the value of the property. Even if a municipality decided to foreclose on a property, the legal process still includes an auction to raise funds to pay off debtors and lien-holders. Sometimes the city is the only bidder on those properties. That’s how Meriden acquired the dilapidated former Meriden-Wallingford Hospital a few years ago, according to Moore. At other times only the city and the mortgage company bid on foreclosed land.

“There’s no better feeling,” Romano said during a phone interview Monday evening. “I’m up there to get a job done. I just have to trust my stuff and get people out the same way I always have.”
Romano made his major league debut for the Reds in a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on April 16. In that game, Romano logged three Louisville Bats Triple-A Man- innings. The righty gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits, including two homers and four walks. He IS YOUR SITE fanned two.
“I would anticipate Sal will be a lot more composed and ready to pitch to his strengths this next time through on Thursday,” Reds manager Bryan Price told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

“I’m just going to be pitching to my strength and be a groundball pitcher,” Romano said. “I can’t worry about what park I’m pitching in. “We started from really humble beginnings,” Wayton said. “It was a one-day tournament with one division. We didn’t have any web site or social medial. “Me and my family all love dogs,” Wayton said. “We wanted to get more involved in animal rescue and all of our proceeds from the tournament will go to them. I feel we can make a difference with rescue dogs to help provide some money. We would like to do anything we can help the dogs have a better quality of life. Hopefully in the future as the tournament grows we will be able to give more money.”

Post 72 sailing with a strong headwind
Summer fortunes in a forever-proud baseball community with a revered high school program, a history of District 5 Little League titles and several professional players were on the wane. Post 72, ravaged by travel-ball opt-outs, was 7-15.
“We work on this. The first thing we practice is getting leads and stealing. We put it into kids’ minds not to worry about getting picked off,” Verderame said. “We’re gamblers. We’re successful because we’re aggressive with leads and take-offs.”
Two years later, Verderame and his Post 72 associates have steered Southington out of the doldrums and are sailing with wind at their backs. Through 16 games leading up to Monday’s game against Zone 1 leader Avon, Southington was 12-4 with six consecutive wins.
Verderame’s stolen-base stats tell that story with the clarity of a foghorn. Going into Monday’s encounter, the 72 Crew had stolen 74 bases

Community Resource Guide The Southington Community Resource Guide, which provides connections to important services benefiting older adults, addresses the fact that as people age, their abilities often change thus they may require new services or assistance to achieve an optimal quality of life. For example, a senior may no longer drive and now needs home delivery of groceries, wants to downsize into affordable housing, or needs a caregiver to assist with daily activities. This free publication provides answers to questions that individuals and their loved ones may have such as,
“My loved one has dementia. Where can I get help?”, “Can I get my prescriptions delivered?”, “Where can I find someone to help me at home?” Topics include home safety, in-home services, elder law, support services and other essentials of daily living. Listed resources are based in or serve Southington and also refer to state level programs. The Southington Community Resource Guide was developed through collaboration between Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging and North Central Area Agency on Aging, sponsored by the state of Connecticut and funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The Southington Community Resource Guide can be found online at cthealthyaging.org. Users can also access the information by dialing 2-1-1. Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging also
publishes the Dementia Caregiver Resource Guide for those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. This is also available on the website cthealthyaging.org. For more information on either guide, call Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, 1-877-4AGING1 (1-877-424-4641).
